Dolphins pick RT Jonathan Martin in second round

The Dolphins clearly were going to add an offensive tackle if you read the between the lines every time coach Joe Philbin pressed the importance of adding help up front.

Today, the Dolphins made Stanford left tackle Jonathan Martin their second round pick. Martin will change positions to play in Miami.

"I haven't played right tackle but I feel I can play right tackle," Martin said.

"It's a dream come true. It's an amazing city, amazing fan base, amazing history. I can't wait to get down there and work."

Martin said he talked to the Dolphins at the Indianapolis combine but didn't have much contact with the team beyond that.

The Cardinal used zone and power blocking techniques up front so Martin can do both. "I feel comfortable with it," he said.

Martin initially was thinking of playing for Harvard when he was told by that school's admission office that his he would have been the university's first fourth-generation African American student. Martin's parents went to Harvard. His grandparents did. One of his great grand parents did.

General manager Jeff Ireland dismissed the idea that Martin is not extremely strong. Martin had only 20 reps on the bench press during the combine. Ireland said part of the reason is because he has exceedingly long arms for his position.

He's a hybrid.

Vernon was preojected as a late 5th or 6th rounder.

In the third AND YOU'RE HAPPY?

The guy was also suspended. No one could believe he even came out this year!

Talk about drinking the kool aid.

So far we got a 2nd round project QB at 8 overall.

Martin, a decent pick up for sure. A few concerns, but minor.

Then a 5th/6th round suspended DE in the EARLY 3rd.

Then a NICE trade down to boot.

I hate to be so negative, but come on you guys! You watched this happen. I told you Ireland would blow chunks from the moment he squandered our 8th.

Realistically speaking, seriously and when you sober up, the sum total of our draft so far is this:

We replaced Colombo!.

You guys are really happy with Irelands draft so far?

Unbelievable. When you sober up tomorrow you guys are going to be bummed big time.

Seattle was rumored to like Tenne....and NOW have taken Russel Wilson....

Seems like the FINS were SMART to NOT over pay for Flynn.....

He will get coached up hard. No more BS for him!

Vernon is 239lbs?? And he's a DE???

Sanu or Toon at 78.

Wilson in the 3rd? After signing Flynn?

Brains in Seattle must get water-logged!

Ireland was definitely held back by Tuna. GREAT PICKS!!!

Do we have anymore picks tonight so I can go to bed?

Jets fans are back, they must be getting sick of being bashed by every media outlet in the nation. Dummies. Off season Super Bowl champs made it to 8-8 with a locker room implosion and now they have Sparano, Sanchez and other losers including I'll play when I feel like it Coples. Good luck Wets! Field goooooooaaaallllllllllllll better go to Jersey and practice that fist pumping chumps!

Pete Carroll is possessed by Wanny's demon soul. Please send an exorcist over to the West Coast.
Seriously, what is going on there?

Looks like were up agin after the jets....

Loving what Ireland is doing with this draft, SOLID picks so far for team Miami

Tell you what guys I am liking this Vernon kid. He has some skills. Is raw but I can see him becoming a good player.

Of course...commercial break .....

I'm thinking the pick will be a secondary player. Just a guess. Could be Boykin from Georgia

Cameron Wake must be laughing out loud right now.

Yeah I ahev to admit I don't quite get the Oliver Vernon pick but having said that I don't actually know the guy. Is the play to play him at LB?

Was this really the best they could do? I like the first two picks but I don't love this one. We'll see.

Seattle is brutal!!

I'll keep my FO and coaches over them.

bobbyd12, for me, it's the complete opposite. I don't like it at all...I hope you're right and I'm wrong...

Made some good free agency moves and is having a good draft so far. Maybe the fool was was Parcells after all

Not concerned about off-the-field issues. A college kid took cash, sex and luxury boat ride? SIGN ME UP!!!

He seems to need his motor pushed but, when inspired, can be a good pass rusher.

Sanu and Toon both slow unexplosive possession types. Not and upgrade over any one on this current roster. Get a DT...OLB...SS and an explosive young rb and call it a draft. No need to reach for trash at the wr possession just to say you drafted one.

Cam Johnson is still there, how can Dolphins be so naive for gods sake.

I know zilch about Vernon. Scrambled to google and pots what I did find. I do know 4.8 40 pretty darn good for a DE. LOL

thinking Sanu, WR from Rutgers

Tannehill looks like actor John Malkovich. Check it out.

Fishfan in CT,

He's in the Pro's now. What do you think they do in the off-season???

New blog post is up. Please go there.

Does it really matter who we pick at this point? The first pick was the first dominoe in the chain.

Anything after Ryan is going to fall flat.

You don't see the Vernon pick as a bit of a reach? I've seen him go in the 4th and the 5th but no the 3rd. Hope they didn't just pick him, so that they could have a guy from the U.

Tannehill looks like actor John Malkovich. Google him and Tanne and check it out.

Olivier was a projected top 70 guy pretty much across the boards. Mcshay had him as high as second round. Watched him at the U and he is a good pass rusher, he'll play this year.

FINS on the clock....

I was thinking Bruce Irvin situational pass rusher until Pete Carroll blew his wad wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to early.

Im thinking maybe Irelands thinking about making a situational pass rusher of Vernon. My best guess, I havent a clue. LOL

Vernon is like a poor man's Melvin Ingram.

I told you Ireland would blow chunks from the moment he squandered our 8th.

Get over it. They picked Tanne at 8. Nobody can say it was squandered or a great pick. Let's judge him by how he performs on OUR team and not JUMP to conclusions. Give the guy a chance.

you think being in the pros means it's guaranteed the kid will give 100%?

He has to WANT it or else he will be out of the league in two years. I hope that Philbin can press his buttons so we get a big sack threat opposite Wake.

Don't know much about this Olivier kid. He's small for a DE, fits more as Olb. Don't know about pass coverage skills. Definitely an experiment, don't fit this high up. Or Ireland knows something we don't.

YG, I just youtubed him and saw some highlights.

We just got Egnew TE from Missouri. I like it but we need a WR.

odinseye take the hate blinders off. Who had him rated in the 5th and why? If you look at it objectively the outlet you choose to follow (funny how you follow the one outlet that has him rated in the 5th when everyone else said he would have been a late first rounder if not for the suspension) rates players by WHERE THEY THINK TEAMS WILL TAKE THEM. NOT by where they rate talent wise. PF had them there because they thought teams would be scared off by character concerns. PUH;LLLLLEASE. He followed a group of people who were all doing the same thing, he wasnt the ring leader.

Dude seriously what is your f***ing problem? Why are you trying to ruin this for everyone. I have never heard so much senseless negativity from you since AI've been reading your stuff. Your not even putting rationale thought into your posts and there isn't a hint of objectivity. Either that isn't really you or I am totally done defending you OR reading your posts. Jeez WTF? We're trying to have fun and root for aour team and you have to come in here once after every pick and pi** on our heads?! F**k you!

He is basically a receiver!

It's official...FINS have no idea what the FUC they are doing. A te is not a need position and we take one this early. Ireland must be off his rocker. No DT...No impact safety...no LB. Embarrassing draft full of reaches if you ask me.

Oliver is one of those hybrid players, watched a lot of him at the Canes games, quick, smart, around the ball.

Egnew had highest vertical at combine. Red zone threat but blocking is an issue

Craig, I guess if he suck yes it is a reach. If he comes in and get 10 sacks first year I would say no, he's not a reach. :)

You don't think TE was a need...our Mark Bavarro clone is slow....and disappears for games @ a time.....

We don't need a te that is just a red zone guy. Need a guy who can be a true seam threat. Get yac...get deep....good hands. No a slow plodding te with a vertical leap when you know you have pressing needs as a football team. STUPID

Live the TE pick!! Guy is big, quick and will swerve as a TE/WR. Not a good blocker but doubt that's why they picked him. Fasano, big lumbering TE and a quick slot type TE. Great job Ireland. Definitly see a Green Bay type offense being built!! Loving it

we moved the ball BETWEEN the 20's....it was our redzone production that sucked...

A little from Walter Camp on Egnew:

6'5 252lbs

Egnew could be a decent backup to a good tight end in the NFL. If he is paired with a dangerous tight end, he could take advantage of some soft coverage and help move the chains. He should only be a second or third tight end at the next level. He doesn't have the plus skill set with speed and athletic ability to be a starter.

Player Comparison: Leonard Pope. Egnew doesn't have the size of Pope (6-8, 264). However they have a similar-style game. Pope is able to contribute some as a receiver, but his lack of foot speed limits him from getting yards after the catch, just like Egnew. Entering the NFL, Egnew doesn't ever project to being as good a blocker as Pope is. Pope was a third-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, and Egnew looks like a mid-round pick.

Egnew isn't one of the more explosive te's in the draft. It's not like your getting a dynamic talent. Why draft this kid when you have players available at positions that are more pressing. Egnew is not faster than Damn Clay who we took last year. Still not seeing the logic.

Anybody who doesn't believe we needed a TE obviously didn't watch NE and what they did with Gronkowski and Hernandez

Jermichael Finley is 6'5" 247, and Egnew is 6'5" 252. Does Philben see a new Finley here?

Oh I'm sorry, Philbin doesn't want fast TE's!!

Are you watching any football??

Egnew is a good player. He had a great year the last year Gabbert was there. I watched a lot of those highlights because I was watching Gabbert a lot last year. He had an ok year this year because QB wasn't quite as good.

I had this kid in one of my Miami mocks. I thought we'd WR but I am guessing since there is so much depth there that maybe we'll start the WR run tomorrow.

Where the hell are you guys getting Egnew is fast?

Every single thing that pops up when I Google says "SLOW" footspeed. Terribble YAC and almost zero redzone threat. GOOGLE not GUESS! LOL

Loving this draft so far. Looks like Ireland can listen to coaches too. Phins on the way up
