Dolphins pick Vernon, trade down, pick Egnew

The Dolphins used their No. 72 pick in the third round to draft defensive end Oliver Vernon of the University of Miami.

The team then traded No. 73 to the San Diego Chargers for No. 78 overall and No. 183, which is a sixth-round pick.

Vernon, 6-3 and 261 pounds, was told by the team he'll work in the 4-3. Vernon's best year came in 2010 when he had 10.5 sacks. He was suspended in the Nevin Shapiro scandal last year and contributed only 3.5 sacks in six games.

I asked Vernon who he would characterize his Hurricanes career.

"Unfulfilled," he said.

Vernon is the first University of Miami draftee for the Dolphins since Vernon Carey in 2004.

With selection No. 78, the Dolphins then picked Missouri tight end Michael Egnew, a 6-5, 252-pound seam threat who can also block.

Last season, Egnew caught 50 passes for 523 yards and three touchdowns.

I gave Odin a rim job and he just bailed on me afterwards. NO CLASS that dude. I'd make him give you your jolly first before engaging him.

Good for Andrew Luck, he gets Fleener and TY Hilton. Hilton can take a screen to the house, return kicks. I love his skill set. Wish we found a way to get him

No I don't Yesterday!

What YOU do in your free time is your own business.

Lamar Miller in the 4th?

Anyone notice Belichik's went defense on every singl pick so far?

There goes Hilton

Texas_Dolfan,

I'm surprised bud. I thought you weren't onside with the pick. Good for you man! Hope you get to wear it proudly for at least the next 10-12 years!

That Pats D is gonna be really scary:
Jones
Hightower
Bequette

Belichick realizing he must coach D to win rings again, we are f'd!

..I admit that I hated the idea of Tannehill. But as I said last night before, and right after the pick. Now that he is a Phin. I will root for him, hope I am wrong, and watch him develop..It is fine to voice your opinion before the draft, even after there is concrete game information..None of these guys have played a down, and truley cannot be evaluated until that time.

Every one of these picks has addressed a need for this team. Like I said earlier, the proof will come on the field as to the success, or failure of this draft. I like that we addressed RT, TE..So far my 2 favorite picks of the lot.

i totally agree with u yesterdays gone , plus marshall was a ball hog only worrying about his stats he was the reason we only won 6 games he forced moore to throw to him when others were open an when moore did throw to him he dropped the damn ball

There goes Hilton

Cheer up, there's always the RedRoof INN! LOL

So maybe Miami is fixing what they can I think they have done a good job with their picks but WR is killing me.

Joe Adams, Marv Jones, Keyshawn Martin, Marvin McNutt, Nick Toon? Anyone lol. I don't like Hartline, Bess, Gates, Wallace that's ugly lineup.

1 more pick and I think it will be the first Raider pick without Al Davis.

Lamar Miller in the 4th?

Don't think we have a huge need for a RB with Bush,Thomas,Slaton, and the kid from Canada.

Craig, it was nice to finally see the qb picked. I also love the conviction. Heard Ireland say he believes tannehill would be on the same level as luck and rg3 if he had another year as a starter. They didn't mess around with a trade down or anything.

This week at least, life is good as a dolphin

I was clamoring for Reuben Randle to fall to the 3rd rd but there are still some WR's out there in Givens, Toon and Marvin Jones. One should be there with their 4th rd pick

When is Belichick going to retire? We are totally f'd until he does. Maybe we can trade our entire draft and Ireland for him.

AndyNJ,

GB wasnt an early rd drafting wr team. I would say that strategy worked very well for the them. Im sure we'll add 1 or 2 before the draft is over.

Heck, just like with GB, our late wr selections may turn out better than guys drafted far before them. Just like GB does it.

So have faith ok? LOL

Miller is a definite upgrade over Canada and slaton also gives depth and speed at RB that we need if bush goes down. Great prospect w KR/ PR impact immediately.

Miller in the 4th
Streeter in 5th

Well..good night everyone!

See you all tomorrow! (The trolls can stay away!)

Also Miller would be a nice safety net if we lose Bush to Free agency next year

We're in good shape. Still alot of recievers left and the 3rd rd is over.

We pick 8th tomorrow. We're sure to get one of them.
I vote for Givens. Toon and Streeter could very well fall to the 5th.

YG,

Yeah I hope round 4 they pull the trigger on a WR.

Does anyone know what Miami got from Chargers in that trade???????

There are qite a few WR's left in this draft. Here's a few.

Chris Givens
Juron Criner
Nick Toon
Marvin McNutt
Joe Adams
Marvin Jones
Greg Childs
Jarius Wright
Tommy Streeter
Dwight Jones
Devon Wylie
Junior Hemingway
Chris Owusu
B.J. Cunningham
Marquis Maze

Andy, they got SD's 6th round pick.

Anubsani makes no sense. You act like the other team would not have scored again. Those were not drops with :10 left on the clock.

A sixth rder Andy.

Forget WR. None of them are any better than what we have now. You are delusional if you think so.

thanks guys!

Guess we're delusional Texas???

AndyNJ,

It was a 178th pick I think it was. That eqautes to an extra 5th rd pick.

If Im right about the 178th pick, we got the Chargers 5th rd pick. I know its no later than a 6th rd pick. we only slid 5 spots in the 3rd to do it. Not bad.

Brandon Boykin or Lamar Miller

Dolfan Rick,

Chris Given is the guy I want too. Can't believe he's still there. Don't forget we also got the guy from SD in FA too, so while I don't love the guys we have, maybe one or two of them can step up. I'm still hopeful for guys like Moore, Wallace and Gates.

Michael Egnew, tight end, Missouri (6-6, 245)

Egnew doesn’t play nearly as fast as he times out and has a tough time getting in and out of his breaks. Is more of a straight-line guy who can threaten the seam, but a guy like Orson Charles from Georgia, in my mind, would have been a better selection.

NFL Ceiling: Mismatch guy

NFL Floor: Sub-package reserve

(this is from nationalfootballpost.com)

...YG, all of the recievers on Green Bays active roster last year were all drafted in rounds 2 or 3(WR Driver round 7 iss the exception) The Tight ends rounds 3-4..

But as you said on the previous page, and I brought up a similar point a few days ago..We have a full roster of recievers. We don't know how this staff has evaluated the guys we have..Were they see them contributing. Even if we do draft a rookie WR, at this point what is a realistic expectation? Even the Packer recieving corps took time to develop. It is the system. We have to remember it is more about the group, then 1 guy..If we end up developing a number one guy, great. But one guy isn't going to get the huge percentage of targets.

Brock Osweiller gets to sit at least 3yrs behind Manning. Not bad deal for him or Elway. LOL

Dolphins need a hard-hitting safety.

can't teach speed

Guess we're delusional Texas???

Rick,

What do you mean? I miss something?

Craig,

Yeah Nanuu I think. Solid reciever, not spectacular but will be a good fit in the WCO.

I'm feeling better at this point than any of our drafts in awhile.

DD,

I 100% agree! Sparano may have been responsible for young not developing properly by demanding they look like pro bowl players in practice before getting extensive playing time on the field.

I think Sparano may have forgotten giving them more playing time on the field is a huge part of the learning process. Game day success bolsters thier confidence and production.

Practice is very important, but wins and losses in practice, doesnt count for or against your schedule. Some those young wr's needed more playing time to speed along thier learning curve.

Tannehill,Good choice. After that ?????. Who's the New QB going to throw to? The New TE.That's fine.But... It appears to the Dolphins are addressing needs at other position's rather than help the new QB,since Brandon's now in Chicago. I FEEL,that MY Dolphins should have given Tannehill a solid rookie WR.Also,The Dolphins could use a safety. And last, but not least... WE NEED A NEW G.M.!!!.Day 3 still has talent at both WR & S. Let's hope the current G.M recognize what 50,000 of us recognize!!!

It's a shame we don't have a need at RB, because Lamar Miller in the 4th round would be a steal...

Hey, the Patsies didn't have a need at QB last year, and took Mallett... why not us taking Lamar Miller? :)

Forget WR. None of them are any better than what we have now. You are delusional if you think so.

Posted by: sabido | April 27, 2012 at 11:04 PM

Thats what i meant Texas. Just messin with sabido.

This is actually the 1st draft under Ireland I didnt have to Google our picks all 3 rds. LOL

Had a good draft night and enjoyed the chat. See you guys tomorrow.

Go Fins!!!!

As far as Safety. Antonio Allen is still out there I believe. 5th rdish.

Ah, yes I am delusional and a little crazy. :) See you tomorrow.

..You have to like the thinking as far as the right tackle, and the tight end. We solidified the weakest area of our offensive line. Where the majority of the pressure, and breakdowns occured..The right edge.

Add that we are going to run a lot of 2 tight end sets. Our tight ends, and running backs will not have to be babysitters for the right tackle. We will be free to get these playmakers out into patterns where last year they were restricted to blockers.

With Egnew we get a guy that looks flexible as far as where we can use him. We needed a seem threat for the 2 tight end formation..he is also a huge redzone target.

tomorrow favorites i think are still available....

Ronnell Lewis OLB Oklahoma
Lamar Miller RB The University of Miami
Joe Adams WR Arkansas
Bobby Massie OT Ole Miss

Take giving or mcnutt and its the best draft we've seen in awhile

You guys should be happy. Not taking a wr 3rd suggests after evaluating what we have on the roster, Philbin/Shermen dont feel to terrible about it.

Who's to say Philbin does a far better scheming Gates into live action than Sparano. Maybe part of the problem was Ireland brought in players Sparano asked for.

Maybe the problem wasnt that they were bad players, Sparano just did a poor job in his development and usuage of these players.

Overall, I really like the first three picks. Needed QB, RT and Pass Rusher. And Ireland got all three.

TE has been mentioned for the past 3 years as a position of need. But with Clay and Fasano I felt the team should have gone with a WR.

The trade of 73 was a bit confusing to me. I think this may have been a mistake. We could have used that pick for Sanu from Rutgers. Big target with good upside. I can only hope that Ireland and Philbin see Egnew as worth it.

Tannehill...I wish miami traded out picked up a second rounder, probably Tann would have slipped down to them. I would have liked Miami to Gamble on that as Tann is probably a second round pick but becomes a first rounder for the need of a QB.

Martin - Solid pick solidified R side, we must have a RG from 1 of 3 other players on the roster, Murtha ect..

Vernon - Who knows it is the 3rd round, we need speed from outside to help Wake...

Egnew - another solid pick...this a possible match up problem for many teams i see him as a Hernandez for Pats....not as good...but if you guys are wondering about a WR...we drafted gates and are developing Pruit and the other dude....so why pick another WR. Plus this draft is so Deep there are 10 other WRs still on the board....

R

YG,

I think that was definately the case with the O-line.

I was pulling for Sparano for awhile but when you spend a ton of money on whats supposed to be your area of expertise, and it's the worst unit on the team..you get fired.

Dolfan Rick,

Plus with Sparano playing musical chairs with the oline all the way up to the 1st game of the season. That has to go under the title:

"WTH was he thinking"!

....Then he always wondered why we had such slow 1st season starts. Geesh, gimme a break already! LOL

Adams and Criner are the best wr I see available right now

You can teetor with your oline a little, but by the last two preseason game, you need to have your oline starters set.

You cant wait until game 1 of the regular season to do it. LOl

I know you guys don't care but the Rays have won 6 straight...just sayin. :)
