Dolphins pick Vernon, trade down, pick Egnew

The Dolphins used their No. 72 pick in the third round to draft defensive end Oliver Vernon of the University of Miami.

The team then traded No. 73 to the San Diego Chargers for No. 78 overall and No. 183, which is a sixth-round pick.

Vernon, 6-3 and 261 pounds, was told by the team he'll work in the 4-3. Vernon's best year came in 2010 when he had 10.5 sacks. He was suspended in the Nevin Shapiro scandal last year and contributed only 3.5 sacks in six games.

I asked Vernon who he would characterize his Hurricanes career.

"Unfulfilled," he said.

Vernon is the first University of Miami draftee for the Dolphins since Vernon Carey in 2004.

With selection No. 78, the Dolphins then picked Missouri tight end Michael Egnew, a 6-5, 252-pound seam threat who can also block.

Last season, Egnew caught 50 passes for 523 yards and three touchdowns.

DA,

I wasn't suggesting that. I simply threw the idea out there. Anything wrong with that? I'm struggling to understand the pick and what it means. I think DD did a very job explaining what it all means.

Byw, I know guys liked it but the move by the Resdskins to add Cousins makes ZERO sense to me. Think about it for a second as a 'Skins fan might think of it. You've just given up three firsts and a 2nd for RGIII. You're down two picks this year. You've commited to this guy and you have other needs on the team. And in the 4th you go out and add ANOTHER QB? Huh? Makes no sense. I don't like the kid Cousins myself, so to me you just drafted a backup. They would have been smarter to bring a guy like Grossman back because to me there's no real upside on Cousins.

I LOVE TGE GM'S POSTURE TODAY, OBIOUS THA DOLPHINS ARE GOING WITH A 2TE, QUICK BACKS ROTATING IN AND OUT, DANSBY NOW BECOMES A PRESSURE LB ON THE 4-3 SCHEME WITH MISSI AND KEVIN COVERING THE MIDDLE. THE NEED 1 WR AND POSSIBLY TRADING FOR DONALD DRIVER AFTER THE DRAFT, REMEMBER A SECOND ROUND OF FREE AGENCY IS COMING AFTER THE DRAFT. GUYS WHAT DO DO THINK.

I would rather have Toon or McNutt and even Wright from Arkansas. But was just sticking with the hometown theme.

Texas,

Streetr's my best 4th rd gues if he's still available too. The Guy's 6'5 219 lbs, 4.4 40, and had 8 recieving td's last year. His scouting report reads "red zone threat".

Streeter could be the final piece of a very productive offensive draft this year.

How about Criner, has he been picked yet?

The selling tickets thing can't be dismissed either, obviously, lol.

if miller doesn't unseat miller or bush, doesn't he address a glaring need still? How many KO returns for TD has there been since TG was traded to SanFran?

Well there goes Wright.

thomas, not miller

Wright just went to the Vikings i think.

Sorry guys, not sold on Streeter. I think there are better WRs that could be there for us, that aren't duplicates of what already have on the team.

Craig,

Who do you like at WR thats still available?

CraigM,

The Cousins pick of Kirk Cousins makes very good sense to me. It means every qb on thier roster not named RG3 totally stinks.

Think about that. Cousins isnt expected play anytime soon. RG3 is the starter. Provided RG3 doesnt get injured this year, Cousins groomed as a backup is an excellent idea. He's already a much better backup option than they currently have on the roster.

Plus, Cousins will only sign a 4yrs contract, then he's free to hit the open Market. By then, he could be looking for a very huge payday and already having RG3, The Skins wont be paying huge dollars to keep both.

Its a great shorterm backup solution for the Skins. Theyre only paying a 4th rd pick for him. Isnt that what you usually pay for backup qb in trade? Its pretty much the same territory value wise and they bget him for 4yrs.

EPNU is so much better with the draft coverage than the others.

Great comments!
Question/Comment...Jim Harbaugh took basically the same SF team that finished way down in a weak division and won a division and 12-13 games.

Is it entirely out of the question that our HC and staff couldn't take our guys in the same direction?
Granted, our division is MUCH more difficult, so you have to figure 3-maybe 4 losses there. But excellent coaching can take you a long way.

I'm also not going tom minimize the fact that for the first time in maybe 6-7 years, our beloved Fins will be exciting to watch. This may translate to a couple of extra (optional) TV games towards the end of the season.

I am VERY excited about our future.

CraigM,

I like Streeter's size and speed. I can unsderstand not being 100% sold on him. But how can we be 100% sold on any wr drafted 5th rd?

Im not 100% sold on him, but, I do think he's a 5th rd value, just like any other wr who's still there 5th rd. If we could be 100% sold on any of them, they wouldnt still be there 5th rd.

Streeter is height speed and 1 route pony right now but he could develop. His height makes him an instant red zone threat. I say worth a shot in the 6th or later.

I think we all need to look at the possibility that we are going to do some more tweeks after cut downs. Their are a lot of FS/OL/WR who could help fix some things.

Just am not sure how you fit it all into the budget. Starting to think that Dansby might get traded or (please lord do not let this happen) cut.

After this draft I think Moore/Gerrard is also gone. I think that a purge is comming and we had all better be ready for big time names that are going to be going out the door.

I am now preparing for Dansby/Bush/Long all being show the door. We will use the money to change yet again. At the end of the year I thought we could tweek and fix now I think we are going to completely trash again. Should have figured this out when they let Nolan go. West Coast/ 4-3 means you have to change more personnel than a few. Funny thing is we spent five years throwing away a pretty good 4-3 D. Now we are going to throw away a pretty good 3-4 D. to get back to what we had.

Put finger ontop of head and start the scratching motion????

Go Dolphins!!

Yes, why NOT Streeter in the 6th, if he's got more to offer than a 6th round safety, the same type guy you can get in FA?

If the Fins got Driver in a trade, his experience would be invaluable, not to mention his toughness. Getting guys from WINNERS, instead of the Cowboys...how refreshing.

Texas,

We traded our 6th rd pick this year didnt we?

I really thought Steeter came on his last seasons. Especially the last.

I really thought of all the big Norhwestern high recruits, Streeter was the best. Forston could probably be good depth on the DL as a FA.

Toon is gone now. Saints liked him.

YG,

We have the Chargers 6th.

WR's Marvin Jones and McNutt still available

DE's still there are: Cam Johnson DE and Crick

A couple DB's still there are: Markelle Martin and George Iloka.

Somewhat respectfully, ARE YOU CRAZY!
I refer to this "I am now preparing for Dansby/Bush/Long all being show the door."
Sir, I believe no further comment is necessary. :>D

People keep bringing up Osi Umenyiora. What is the deal with him? Is he a free agent or do the Giants want to trade him?

Yes but still have the 6th with the trade we made in the 3rd.

I can understand Vernon vs what was left-he has some talent; dont get the TE in round 3- was expecting a speed WR there and TE in the 4th or 5th r.

I am from Columbia, MO and have watched Egnew play for the past three years. Egnew is a STUD. I wish the Chiefs would have picked him up. He is not a blocker, but will catch anything thrown in his area. Then he will drag those trying to tackle him another five yards. He doesn't go down unless the defense swarms to tackle him.
Good pick up for the Dolphins

whatch the video on our new t.e.i was inpressed great find

Good Early morning, I just stopped in to visit your website and imagined I’d say I loved myself….
