Dolphins can now add 10 more players than expected

A different kind of free agency is about to hit the NFL in general and the Dolphins in particular.

The NFL on Monday suddenly expanded rosters for the offseason and preseason to 90 players. Previously, the limit was 80, but the league's Management Council voted to increase it Monday. The first cutdown, in late August, will be to 75, with the final cut after the last of four preseason games bringing rosters to 53.

So what does that mean to the Dolphins?

Well, suddenly players that might not have been signed could be on the radar and could get a chance to compete for a roster spot. That's good news for folks such as Ernie Sims or Omar Gaither, whom the Dolphins announced visited with the team on Monday.

Suddenly, there are extra roster spots for take-a-flyer players such as the two veterans.

The added roster spots might also encourage teams to trade down in the coming draft. Typically, a trade down involves a scenario where a team trades a pick for multiple picks. In other words, one player for two players or more players. The added camp roster spots might encourage this kind of trading by some teams wanting camp bodies later in the draft.

The added spots could also put a premium on getting the best available undrafted free agents. That might mean more money being handed out. That also might mean teams that traditionally do well getting undrafted free agents might have the ability to add more talent.

The Dolphins have been very good with undrafted free agents. Kicker Dan Carpenter, recievers Davone Bess and Roberto Wallace were among Miami's undrafted free agents who made the final rosters.

Only the 51 highest-paid players count toward the salary cap.

The 90 players will include all active, inactive, practice squad, exempt and reserve list players, plus unsigned draft choices and franchise-tagged free agents.

Fins could win the close games if their 1st pick turns out to be a Pro Bowl caliber player.

They need to ask themselves which player will make a difference NOW (not a year from now).

DAVID DE CASTRO WILL BE GONE BY PICK NO 12 ...THAT'S WHY THE COWBOYS AND THE LIONS TRYING TO MOVE UP TO GET HIM.......

You should not trade down, this move provides plenty of bodies to look at. Instead, you should trade up and get impact players and allow this mechanism to provide the filler.

EVEN THE RAVENS WANT DECASTRO...........

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If Tannehill has a 2nd or 3rd round rating on him at this point I doubt any of the Tannehenne people would be drooling over him in the draft.

ALoco,

Im not going there anymore(Ohio's blog). I dont like a few of the players there. Too many future problems I would like to avoid waiting to happen there.

At least here its as adver5tised. There not so much. I'll always have rat Oscar trying to side swipe me, and guys like Darryl take a dump and JS "lower Alabama" trying to freeze me out of conversations when they decide to hold thier own private circle jerk.

Thanks but no thanks. Heck, at least the trolls here will at least talk to you. LOL

YG, Ireland will be playing checkers not chess

(( AT LEAST THE TROLLS HERE WILL AT LEAST TALK TO YOU )).......................

FUNNY......

YG,

Saying our pass rusher would need to be equivalent to LT is like saying whatever receivers we get will need to be Jerry Rice.

I'm all for expecting greatness from our team, but you have some really high expectations laid out

YG I can dig that right there, we have a great triple threat if we use them right in our backfield, we solidify the line with DeCastro and we win a lot of 17-10 games for the next 9-10 yrs, but like you said people won't like it because we have only produced 1 great lineman in yrs, but you can't find another if you stop looking

I GOT THE FEELING LUCK WILL BE A BUST ...........

weeden is a winner.

Man, that would be outtasight if we get the right player. It would be like tripping with Timothy Leary in Golden Gate Park while listening to Sgt. Pepper.

Cool. Draft the right guy, Dolphins. Outtasight.

Only four teams have drafted fewer All-Pros than the Dolphins over the past decade.

The Dolphins OL was ranked 30th last year.

The pass defense was a joke.

In free agency, their only elite playmaker was traded for two acorn draft picks. Their best remaining OLB is now in serious legal trouble.

Their top two QB's were rejected by two of the worst teams in the NFL. The realistic QB prospects available to them in the draft are iffy.

The salary cap has been mismanaged in the extreme.

At best, they might find one or two good rookies that will play significantly in 2012. Most rookies are projects.

Their best remaining player (Long) is coming off a string of injuries; their next best player (Wake) is vastly underpaid and not happy about it.

The Dolphins are a mess of a football team, and picking a OL or DL is not going to change that.

Aloco, I had the same feeling watching the OK St. Game.

DOES EVERY KNOWS THAT BERGER MAKING MORE MONEY THAN......... WAKE ?

EVERY ONE

DOES EVERY ONE KNOWS THAT D.THOMAS MAKING MORE MONEY THAN ..................... WAKE ?

DO YOU KNOW THAT POUNCY IS MAKING 3 MILLION MORE A YEAR THAN WAKE ?

no.

Aloco, WHat Berger are you talking about?

DO YOU KNOW THAT HARTLINE MAKING A MILLION MORE PER YEAR THAN WAKE ?

AND BESS 2 MILLION PER YEAR MORE THAN WAKE ?

The only way I see that the Dolphins draft Tannehill is if they know something about him that no other Team knows. And they are in the best position to do that.

Which QB in this draft not named Luck or Griffin has the highest probability of starting this year?

1)Tannehill
2)Weeden
3)Other

If other, who?

CLUE... I MEANT ...ODRICK WITH 3.6 MILLION PER YEAR MORE THAN.....WAKE .

Keep Moore draft floyd or blackmon thats is the best option forward.

Swamy.... Russel Wilson... Guy came into a new school and was a leader ASAP.... Why because he's a winner and that's exactly what he's always done. Only knock.... He's short but throws the ball like a top 10 prospect.

Wake needs a raise & will get one sometime this year, we don't have the money to sign him long-term at this point, unless we can get a new deal done for Mr.Long or make some other moves to create more cap space, Wake can't be signed, cap won't allow it.. he needs a big raise, we just don't have the cap space at this point, other deals need to be reworked to come up with the cap space necessary to sign him.

The Dolphins really like Osweiler for some reason. And, they're higher on Coples than Ingram due to his size (never mind that Ingram has a better motor). So, it won't surprise me to see them take Coples at #8 and then Brock in the 2nd or 3rd.

I'd like to see them take the best player available regardless of position since we have so many needs. And, let the chips fall where they may.

Dolphins go 9-7 this year.

Can anyone here tell me why Rodgers dropped so far in the draft? Any particular reason?

DO YOU KNOW THAT GATES THE BUST MAKES MORE MONEY THAN WAKE ,HE MAKES 1.1 MILLION A YEAR AND WAKE MAKES HENNE'S MONEY...ABOUT 600,000 A YEAR ................ IT'S IRELAND FAULT ......HE DRAFTED THE BUST .......

cousins. wilson. brees.

ion, rumor had it that he was a dink and would have been hard to train. he looks like an axx.

I know I may be accused as a homer or that I'm wearing aqua colored glasses or my favorite "drinking the koolaid" (pfffftt) BUT I just don't get the point of posts like sighs at 11:50am.

Every point made in that post is a negative one and has been talked to death about for the past 3 months. There is not one positive in the entire post which renders it completely non objective and therefore a waste of time to read.

I'm sorry but if I'm going to be accused of being a homer because I see the good AND the bad what do we label people as when they only see the bad while ignoring anything positive. Can we even label that person as a fan?

Not trying to attack, I am simply and utterly curious about people with such a negative outlook because I know A LOT of Dolphins fans and not once have I met one who had no hope for the upcoming season.

sigh is pixxed and that's the way sigh vents and his post was spot on.
sigh will be cheering come sept.

Who here thinks Ireland can pick a Future HOFer or do you have more faith in him a pick Acorns?

If Ireland picks a future HOFer in this draft, the credit will be given to Philbin. :)

Aloco did you know that Wake is 30 and may have hit his prime two years ago and is on the decline but his agent still wants a huge contract the likes of perennial pro bowlers?

Did you know that all of the players making more money than him were actually drafted and not pulled off the dung heap that is the CFL?

Did you know that Wakes production declined last year yet his agent wants the same money as players who produced more than him and are younger?

Did you know the Dolphins and Wakes agent are working on a contract right now but are not on the same page with length and size (that's what she said!) of said contract?

Lets tell both sides of the story here bud!

Jeff Ireland is the "CANCER" of this team! We owe the destruction and humiliation of this once proud team to him. He was a nobody when Parcells was in control. Now on his own he has made the Dolphins what they re-the joke of the NFL. So many talented players overlooked in the prior drafts and free agency. This "acorn" thing makes me want to go and kick him in his a**! When, when, when will Ross wake up?
As far as the 10 more players they can add, big deal, all the good ones are gone. Why not Asante Samuel?

Wow!!! Now THAT was one exciting article.

Okay 2watt. So you're saying I'm reading it wrong and sigh is a super fan who is just worried about the season but will be rooting hard with everyone else? Cool. I understand his frustrations but also hope he understands anything can happen. I mean who in the hell thought a 1-15 team would have such a turn around with a bunch of scrubs?

Our team has way more talent than that one did and isn't going to be coached by Sparano who couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. Not saying Philbin's going to be a great coach, who knows, but who in the heck is going to argue that he isn't smarter and more experienced than Sparano while also coming from a winning system? There are positives sigh, it's not all lost, keep your chin up because anything is possible! :)

Ummmmmm ,,,Pouncey may be a HOF player some day. The entire NFL took notice of his play at center in only his first season and he has been talked about already on the NFL network as one of the bright young centers in the NFL this season. So who knows. Faith in the draft is foolish. Not one team in the NFL hits on more than 50% of their picks and when you're talking hall of famers that percentage drops considerably. When thinking of the draft think about throwing darts at a dart board and hoping you hit a bullseye.

Being realistic is a good thing, but we mustn't lose hope. If we lose hope we will turn into Browns fans, and that is not good.

This team can turn the corner at any moment. At least changes were made, with a different coach there is a possibility for a different outcome. And maybe by not getting Fisher, we lucked into a better coach than the Rams got.

Time will tell

PHINS........ LAST YEAR WAS A CELLAR YEAR AND NO PLAYER HAD A GOOD NUMBERS ,THEY ALL CHOOSE TO TAKE EASY AND NOT PLAY HARD FOR OUR EX PIZZA COACH............ NOW WAKE WILL GET AROUND 7-8 MILLION A YEAR ........

DID YOU KNOW THE PRIME FOR ANY PLAYER IS 30 YEARS OLD ?

DID YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE THE MOST DRAFT BUSTS OF ANY TEAM IN THE NFL ?

DID YOU KNOW THAT WAKE WAS THE PEST PLAYER ON OUR TEAM LAST 3 YEARS ?

DID YOU KNOW THAT IRELAND DRAFTED THESE BUSTS WHO MAKE A LOAD OF MONEY;;;;;;;

I'm already on the record saying I'm going to give Jeff another draft and season to see where we're at before I call for his head. I don't believe one season being in charge of the franchise is enough time to judge a man, especially considering he's still getting rid of Bill Parcells garbage picks (see Phillip Merling).

I have a serious question for all of the people saying Ireland sucks and needs to be fired. You are all obviously more in tune with the general manager position in the NFL (considering there is no blame for the Dolphins woes being thrown at Parcells or Sparano) than I. Seriously, I'm not being snarky, I have no clue who is out there that will be an upgrade,,,,SO

My question to the Ireland firing squad is which GM or scout who is available would you want to hire as the next GM? Keep in mind that good GMs do not get released by their teams so a lot of times GMs are picked from the scouting ranks to start their careers. Scouts who are known to be good at what they do (like Ireland was) get promoted to GM. Which guy is going to replace him?

I would be able to support your movement better in the future if I have a better understanding of the solution. Thanks to whomever answers this question.

Phins78,

I was started to get very optimistic with this draft coming BUT if we take TanneHenne @ 8 then I believe ALL will be lost with this franchise for the foreseeable future.

I was listening to Bill Polian last night & he said some very interesting things like you don't go chasing needs instead of taking the best player available. There's NO WAY he's the 8th best player on our board or any other team's board in the NFL for that matter. Polian is 100% correct in saying that he's a late first round/early 2nd round prospect based on where he is right now which is a "project." To take a "project" like TanneHenne at 8 would be insane or in other words more of the same from Ross & Ireland.

The best player on the board at 8 is going to be Kuechly. Since no one wants Misi maybe we trade Burnett for a pick. I can also see us just cutting Misi & wash our hands with him after his off the field adventures.

I'm confident Irescum will find us another Pat White!!

Phin78,

Bill Polian. But I don't think he would ever come to work for Ross. Ross looks more & more like a real d#ck every time he opens his mouth. If he's really forcing Ireland to take TanneHenne then the best chance this team has going forward is when he dies. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but he's showing signs of being another Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones.

It's too early to tell on Odrick (basically a rookie last year), Clay, Gates, & Thomas. As for Misi it is beginning to look that way since his play regressed last year & the off the field issues are never a good sign.

You dont mind your owner meddling when you have an Ireland as a GM.

Aloco barely anything you said in that post is the truth. Odrick recorded a sack per game last year in limited time, hardly a bust and watch for a breakout season this year under Coyle and Rodgers.

I'll give you Misi but remember that he is a role player. But his higher draft position would suggest if he doesn't produce this season he will be labeled a bust. Lets see how the move to the inside works out, Coyle obviously see's something in him that Sparano and Nolan didn't which is why he is moving him.

Gates, Clay, and Thomas are busts?! BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH DUDE, they were rookies playing on a team for Sparano who barely let Moore and Wallace sniff the field the past three years. He didn't believe in developing young players in game, he thought practice was enough. Gates got thrown to like 10 times the entire season! Not to mention all three were injured due to a stupid lockout that forced rookies away from their teams. They didn't even get playbooks until four weeks before the season started!

Do you have any clue what it takes to learn an NFL system coming out of college? You need every second you have to study and practice. All rookies were getting injured on every team last year. And you're going to call them busts?

AND CLAY?!!!!! Clayyyyyyyyyyyy???!!! tHE GUY WAS A BEAST AT THE END OF THE SEASON! :) H/back who plays some tight end and beats linebackers on a regular basis, good blocking out of the backfield, GREAT HANDS, and a tip toe catch down the sideline beating a CORNER BACK for a 45 yard pass! Were you even watching the kid play? In no way shape or form is he a bust.

Aloco if the prime is 30 than my point stands, Wake declined in his "prime" year. I don't care if you think every player took the year off. IMO that is BS. They started the season 0-7 and ended 7-9 meaning they only lost two games after going 0-7. That's not a team that quit on their coach so that statement/opinion by you is spawned from ignorance.

And please show me the place that keeps statistics on draft busts., I would like to read for myself how the Dolphins have the most draft busts in the NFL. Forgive me if I don't just take your word for it.

we probably shouldnt question anyones fanhood. all of us have varying degrees of displeasure and differ on who is responsible for our current state of affairs. some here are overly optimistic and some very pessimistic with most hovering towards "hoping". i think sigh laid it out there like he sees it and i agree with many of his points. we made a mistake with parcells who never really cared about dolphin greats/traditions. i thought when he left he should take his men with him. instead he made sure his guys were firmly entrenched. now we find ourselves in yet another "rebuild" with a GM and owner no one can really believe in.

What kind of weirdo sits around projecting who a team will take 150 players into the draft??

Fin 1984,

I disagree. Ireland may be a lot of things but he knows a hell of a lot more about player personnel than Ross does. Once the owner starts picking the players that's a recipe for disaster.

Greg,

Very interesting points. With all of that said I honestly believe that if we don't take TanneHenne I think we can be competitive this year IF we can hit on a legitimate pass rusher, hit on an upgrade @ WR, & somehow find guys good enough to start at RG & RT. Maybe Murtha &/or Jerry can be the answer???

BTW--That's also assuming that Moore thrives in Philbin/Sherman's offense & that we stay relatively healthy.

IMO--Taking TanneHenne would signal the red flag to be raised & that we're mailing in this season. The Number 8 pick is for a guy who can be an immediate difference maker & if we opt for the "project QB" then this season is lost.

TanneHenne=A rebuilding plan with another potential BUST outcome. Kind of like President Obama. LMFAO!!!

For the record--I don't think Romney will be much better. The problems that our country faces like the debt crisis, the economy, & energy are not going to be solved simply b/c there is a Democratic President or a Republican President. The problems will continue to exist until both sides can put their politics aside & find common ground to do what is best for the country.

we have draft picks, i agree taking tannehill at 8 is a major mistake for us. there are several legit top ten guys we can grab. i'd like blackmon in the 1st and weeden in the 2nd. as for jerry and murtha;i've watched them in several practices and games. they are turnstiles, much like carey and columbo. they would have to improve greatly to help us. philbin wants more atheletic guys even if they are lighter. i agree.

The following QBs are tall:
1. Tom Brady
2. Peyton Manning
3. Ryan Tannehill
4. Ben Rothsliesberger
Hmmmmmmmm.

Could KALIL drop down to the Fins at #8 if the Vikings decide to take Claiborne. There's a lot of talk of that happening to counter the Packers and Lions.

Assuming the Bucs don't take him and no one tries to move up ahead of the Fins to take him, should the Fins take him or trade down with someone that wants him?

My gut feeling is that a player the Fins never thought would be available at #8 will drop in to their lap.
