Free agent linebacker Gary Guyton has agreed to term on a one-year contract with the Dolphins, The Herald's Barry Jackson is reporting.
Guyton, 26 , played for the New England Patriots since 2008 after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent. He started 32 games in his four years with the Patriots, with 16 of those coming in 2009 when he had 85 total tackles.
Guyton started six games in 2011. He will be expected to compete for a starting linebacker job but also figures as a backup and special teams contributor if he's unable to earn a starting spot.
Guyton is a 4-3 outside linebacker type. He is 6-4 and 245 pounds. He will compete with Koa Misi for the starting job.
Big deal? No.
He's an acorn. That is the tale of this 2012 free agency period for the Dolphins.

Disappointing Mr Ross, extremely disappointing!!! Just like last off season's free agency acquisitions. How in the hell can you expect fans to go and purchase tickets? Come on man! GIVE US SOMETHING!!! SOMETHING!!!

Two Billionaires, Ross and Jones felt Ireland was good enough to be worthy of a fat check. You bloggers no better? LOL. Show me how many zeros are at the end of your bank account. LOL
Posted by: Zelao | April 13, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Tiredfinfan,
The Texans were unable to get more than a 4th round pick for Ryans b/c his salary for 2012 was/is $5.9 Million. That's too much money IMO considering we're already paying Dansby & Burnett significant dollars.
As for Winston--that would have been a GREAT signing but he signed a 5 year/$30 Million deal which we also couldn't afford. If Ireland could just sign Jake Scott to be our starting RG & then draft a RT we wouldn't be as f#cked up as some fans think we are. Need a WR (maybe two), a pass rusher, & a FS as well.
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | April 13, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Zelao, just because they have billions doesn't mean they know football you yokel. You'd pass out if you saw these zeros buddy
Posted by: cowkilla | April 13, 2012 at 11:24 PM
Actually, I would NOT trade up for Tannehill!
If he's taken before #8, then either Blackmon (WR) or Richardson (RB) would be available and both would be good value at eight!
Posted by: Tracy474 | April 13, 2012 at 11:24 PM
WHDP...you are an idiot man, no one wants to head that stuff here.

No trade up for Tanny, that would be dumb..you r right Tracey
Posted by: cowkilla | April 13, 2012 at 11:25 PM
No worries, no way Ireland trades up. Who ever Ireland shows interest in he doesn't draft.

Jerry Jones knows football and what to do with his money better than us. He has hired top coaches and knows whats up. They kept Ireland and dumped Sparano. No doubt that was the advice of Parcels AND Peterson.

I am a longtime Dolphin fan and a 3rd generation Florida native. When I read all the negative comments about the team I am disappointed in the fan support. Since many of the late arrival crowd to south Florida is from New York the comments do not shock me. I learned a long time ago that most New Yorkers are no it alls. They come here and complain constantly but they won't go home to that paradise they came from. Are we the Miami Dolphins or the New York Jets transplants?

Greg,
Yeah I agree with Whitemon. No way Blackmon is going to be there BUT I at this point I think Weeden will be a better pick then Tannehill. He's a more polished QB & he knows what it's like to be a professional athlete. Yes Weeden will be 29 this season but last time I checked Peyton Manning was 36 & he just signed a 5 year deal with the Broncos.
Obviously Weeden is not Manning but IF we took Weeden in the 2nd round he can compete with Moore & Garrard (who probably won't stay healthy) right away. If he doesn't win the job what's so terrible if he sat & learned for a year??? In 2013 he'd be 30 & he could give us 6 or 7 seasons as a starter if he stays healthy. Personally I'd rather have a guy starting at 30 who can play than a 23 year old that will get embarrassed.

Bear in mind that the negativity is made much worse from the mindless trolls & Jet fans. There is a difference to being a frustrated Dolphin fan who wants nothing more than our team to add pieces & turn the corner than random thoughts from idiots.
You can't deny that this has been a very rough offseason from a PR standpoint. I like the signing of Richard Marshall & I like the signing of Guyton. However I'd really like to see Ireland sign Jake Scott to be our starting RG & extend both Wake & Starks who have earned new deals.
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | April 14, 2012 at 09:37 AM
sorry Armando I usually never post negative comments but really was the last comment necessary? after all the negative press about free agents our fins were not able to acquire why stir the pot anymore? this new staff has not even had a chance to show what they can do with players already on the team, why not lay off a bit and see what these guys can do with the team......
Posted by: Eddie | April 14, 2012 at 09:49 AM
Actually Jack Sparrow people in the NFL, you know the people who work for a living and don't sit in a blog like a sissy little Nancy boy all day, are the ones who called Ireland a a great scout. The draft guru thing was never muttered from Irelands mouth. So you're wrong and stupid. Ireland has never said he was either. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good Dolphins bashing.
The fact that two or three teenagers have taken over this blog yet all of you "adults" keep coming in here and being berated and arguing back with them is pathetic. Find a new place to go.
Posted by: you're dumb | April 14, 2012 at 09:51 AM
Other teams have taken our castoffs and made superstars out of them maybe we can reverse the trend with Guyton. If one remembers, Shula built a pretty good team with castoffs. GO MIAMI-CANES-DOLPHINS-MARLINS-PANTHERS.
Posted by: Swampbilly | April 14, 2012 at 10:08 AM
cwesleyf , what exactly are the Miami folks like? It's the most rascist part of the country. The whites, blacks, cubans, and haitians all hate each other. Very few of the native Miamians are even football fans, so be thankful for the ones you do have.
Anyone who was around back in the sixties knows the Cubans destroyed the city. It's now a pit, nowhere near paradise. The only thing Miami has over most major cities is no snow in the winter, but culturally and intellectually, there are far more better cities to liv.
Miamians seem to think they are the only town with bars, strip clubs and ho's. 8th street is 3rd world trash and South Beach is a joke. Get around a bit, go to a strip club in North Dakota and I guarantee you will have a lot more fun than in any of the restricted bars in South Florida.
It's funny how often a blogger will say oh maybe not a good idea for a troubled player to be in Miami being so close to South Beach. What a laugh. Miami doesn't have one thing that any other city doesn't have besides ugly, giant, flying cockroaches.

You guys may say more acorns but to me they are trying to fix the whole in the middle of the d last year and also bring in a stud special teams player another major flaw that cost us games and field position.
One good draft and we are better. Go Dolphins!! bet the first pick is a LB sounds crazy but they have said the last two years we need better and more LB's. Dont think their really is anyone that most would want to trade up for so with the 8th pick LB/or deffensive back field.

True indeed. Having gone to school in the North East and then Florida, what a joke it was in Florida. Terrible schools. They produce illiterate adults, just like Armando who has grammatical errors in 98% of his blogs.
I like the fins, but Miami just plain sucks other than no nasty winters.

Everyone needs to stop dissing each others cities. Every city is great in its own right, which is why I won't talk sh*t about any city. Also, I thought this was a football blog, most people come here come to talk about other things that have nothing to do with football.
Posted by: D0 | April 14, 2012 at 01:40 PM
Wait a minute.
More fun in a bar in North Dakota?
That's a stretch of the imagination.
What do they talk about:
Gee Fred, the prairie sure is flat today huh?
Gee Jeb, the grain elevator sure makes for a nice skyline huh?
Gee Joe, I like having the telephone pole as the state tree.
Gee Frank, I gotta take my wife shopping. When does the farmer's auction open?
Gee George, can't wait to see the Lawrence Welk re-reruns tonight.
North Dakota?
Take your weak asss to the New York Jets website.
They will be able to relate to your 19th century mentality.

Go to North Dakota and see. Friendlier girls, easier girls, and the girlie bars are way more fun... You have no idea because you are stuck in some tiny little world and no knothing beyond your preconceived ideas.
Tell me what they talk about in Miami bars? Astro physics? At least everyone can speak and understand perfect Engish in ND.
I'm not from there, nor do I live there. It was just an example for you narrow minded palmetto bugs that think Miami is special. It is not. Not at all. Traffic, humidity, giant roaches, tons of racism. It you don't own a home on the water with your own yacht, many places are better. I'd never go back there.

I would never return to Miami, either, at least not to live. It is one of the poorest cities in the country and among the least educated as well. Wages are depressed because of the service orientation of the economy and much of the population is obsessed with plastic status and looks rather than anything of actual substance.
People buy into the false notion of the city being "cool" when in reality much of it is a facade.
Forbes Magazine has rated it the "second most miserable city in America" (just ahead of Detroit). For those that think Miami is full of 'beautiful people' it has also been ranked 'America's Fattest City' as recently as 2011.
The percentage of college graduates is near the bottom of all American cities.
And, quite frankly, the weather is grossly overrated (unless your idea of great weather is 90 degrees, oppressive humidity, and living in one of the rainiest cities in the country).
Been there/Done that for over 30 years. Glad to be outta that toilet.
Oh, and I'm part Cuban---so don't even START with any of that stuff being the reason. I just think it's a truly sucky city, sorry.

Try getting away sometime and you will find people in remote towns all over are just as streetwise and savvy as the city folks, if not even more so. All those stereotypes you've learned in your tv world are far from reality. One day you will figure it out, maybe.

Basta Ya, thanks for passing along the research. None of it surprises me.
Good luck finding anyone at Miami International to speak English with you. Puedo hablar espanol, pero no me gusta cuando los joven trabajando alla y los adultos tambien fingir que no saben ingles.

For sure there are many many better places to live than Miami, but I can't change the fact that it's my home town. Having lived there for 25 years I understand the cloudy idea that miami is so amazing.. Truth is it's not, not even close. If you're reading this blog and you've lived in Miami your whole life, do yourself a favor and go see the world-- Miami ain't going nowhere, it'll be there when you get back.. If you go back.
