Today marked the first day of the Dolphins 2012 offseason conditioning program. Cameron Wake did not attend in protest of the fact he has one year remaining on his contract and wants an extension and doesn't have anything close to that right now.
Wake obviously deserves a new contract in due time.
The Dolphins want to give him that new contract in due time.
The question is what is the appropriate due time.
Wake obviously believes that time is now and he took this mild step to make his point. But here is the question:
How far is he willing to go to make the point more strongly? If he doesn't have an extension will he sit out OTAs? Will he sit out the mandatory minicamp? Will he sit out training camp?
As he increases the pressure he puts on the team by missing increasingly important dates he also loses traction in that he is obligated to be present, can be fined and, ultimately, is still under contract for 2012.
So this bears watching going forward.

Fine, it was all Tuna's fault! But here is my question. What exactly was Jeff's job during the time Tuna was screwing up the team?
Might as well had T.D. as GM then. Apparently, being GM carries no responsibilities.
If you don't know who T.D. is then you are not a true Dolphin fan.

Here is the thing. Based on good sources. Wake ain't even asking for Peppers money. He asking for over-the-hill JT money.
Is Ireland Jewish?

If he were a POP STAR...
Stephan Ross would have already signed the F-R-E-A-K-I-N-G contract.
Wake is a good football player and he can help the team.
PAY HIM.

Dude, the phins need to make wake and long a priority right now...they're the best two players they have on either side of the ball....both are quality individuals as well. It's a no brainer...just pay the men!
Posted by: Sugarnuts | April 10, 2012 at 03:22 PM
Wake is asking for over-the-hill JT money and Ireland is low balling the dude.
Jeff, pay the man over-the-hill JT money. Screwing with Wake is sending yet another signal that Miami is clueless and inept when it comes to football.

How good can a player be that is in "his prime" and can only "fetch a 3rd round pick". Miami fans always over value their own players. Wake played for the number 6 defense last year that added players to compete. Don't be so sure he's looking to rush out the door to a worse defense. And he can't go anywhere until 2013 so if he doesn't perform who will want him besides dolphins fans

How old is Ray Lewis? Dude like 105 and still making plays. Why does Ireland think 31 is over the hill for a LB?
Posted by: JackSparrow | April 10, 2012 at 03:25 PM
Boulder,
You're basing your premise on him wanting Peppers type of money and postulating from there. In reality, we don't know what his demands are or what type of money he's looking for.
To be fair, I'm sure he's looking to "Get Paid".
But, my point is this: It's better for us to extend him now and let him play happy for the next 3 to 4 seasons. The more important thing is, management is in the best fiscal position as they will be in RIGHT now.
If Wake plays out his contract, he has ALL the barganing chips(sorta like Solia, but probably moreso). Even if he has a bad year, there will be teams lining up to pay him. Believe me, they won't blame Wake for getting double and triple teamed because he's lining up with Misi or Odrick as his bookend.
Long story short, this is the best possible time for the FO to deal with Wake. The longer they try to wait him out, the more money they'll end up having to pay.

Extend his contract and pay him
Posted by: killerdolphin | April 10, 2012 at 03:31 PM
"Great, then we can what? Replace him with a freaking wanna be acorn? Or another Free Agent that will command as much if not more money? Then we can hope that either one will live up to billings and play half as good as Wake.
Wake has at least 3 SOLID years left in him. Extrend the guy now and avoid having to search for another premier pass rusher. Or avoid having to pay through the nose and cap strap yourself like Buffalo did this year.
We already have one of the best pass rushers in the league. Find his bookend to maximize his skills and extend him three years. Now, while management still has some leverage.
You think players(esp. free agents already don't want to come here)? Let Ireland screw this up too and see if it doesn't get worse(if thats even possible)."
Odinseye,
I couldn't agree more. My problem with all this is that Wake should have been extended months ago. The same goes for Randy Starks & btw--going back to Soliai, Ireland was very dumb not to extend him when he had the chance.
I don't think Wake being 30 is a concern. He developed late but he's still in his prime, he's healthy, & he hasn't been an idiot off the field.
With all that said I can TOTALLY see our Front Office doing nothing on this & then Ross/Ireland will wonder why practically everyone who covers the NFL rips our team to shreds. I can also see Ireland trading Wake for a 2nd round pick since he doesn't want to pay market value for talent.
I pray this is Ireland's last season & Ross actually hires someone competent who is not his lap dog.
Posted by: We Have Draft Picks | April 10, 2012 at 03:32 PM
Tuna drafted the players right? Does that mean Ireland the Jew was making the money calls? Is that why we are in the situation we are in now?
Posted by: JackSparrow | April 10, 2012 at 03:33 PM
But then again, Remember that Ireland/Ross are to busy looking for Acorns., Wake is one of those acorns, Sign him.

BAN Jack Sparrow
Posted by: .. | April 10, 2012 at 03:35 PM
The Fins arleady cut ties with their best offensive player. I don't think they can afford to do the same on the defensive side UNLESS they really do wanna tank their season so they can draft Matt Barkley next year? Not a likely move but hey, you never know! This team really does baffle me, haha.
Posted by: dolfanman13 | April 10, 2012 at 03:36 PM
wait til after the draft, and start of training camp, when your finances can be clarified, and see if Wake feels confident enough to have Philbin assume Wake is the man while he's watching the other players, and maybe new studs play.
THEN you'll have your talks work out right. Right now, he's in a void.
Worst possible time to demand anything.
But he may get his doe anyway. But if Im Ireland, I have no incentive to do it now. It behooves me to wait for a spell.
Posted by: JS_in_LA | April 10, 2012 at 03:37 PM
This team is putrid! So much so that's it's now past painfull and heartbreaking and has entered the "it's so bad it's now funny zone." BUT......there is one thing worse than the Dolphins mismanagement>>>The jokers that attempt to write these idiot articles who have never played. So...in honor of my new-found hero "Still Thinking," I will do the only sane thing left to do.

ignores and pisses off decent players who help the team.
It's kind like an ON/OFF switch.
..and now that everyone is yelling, they'll dig their heals in further because their EGOS can't allow them to act reasonable
So Players will tell Players...

Posted by: No Balls | April 10, 2012 at 03:39 PM
Also, age shouldn't be a factor at all. The guy is only 30. He's got at least 4 or 5 years left playing at a high level. Give him a 4 or 5 year deal. It's really unacceptable when your FG kicker is making a LOT more than your best defensive player. WTF?!?!

Can't have it both ways. Was or was not Ireland responsible for all this messy acorn pie?
Posted by: JackSparrow | April 10, 2012 at 03:46 PM
I have no doubt that Miami will sign Wake. However, at this point and time, the team is involved in preparing for one of the most important drafts they will have for a long while.
This particular time is not all about "Cam Wake"... right now is all about "The Miami Dolphins"... Cam Wake is under Contract for the next year. He would do well to follow the example set forth to him by his Defensive counterpart Paul Soliai. A guy who got paid nearly $16 million dollars on a franchise tag in 2011, and now is on a 2 year deal. If Miami does NOT resign him then, Paul will still be under 30 when his contract runs out.
Wake is being an idiot. He should know the team wants him, hell, Miami is the team that brought his exiled azzz back from Canada and gave him another chance... Now, with Cap money low, the Draft on tap and the team trying to find its footing, Wake decides to have a little temper tantrum.
I like Wake... I really do... But let a team offer us a 2nd round pick for him and I would stand out in the parking lot and wave "Buh-Bye"... particularly after a not so hot 2011 season where his moves were on film and he got stood up more then once... 8.5 sacks in 2011 after 14 in 2010.... that is off by nearly 50% and he had Jason Taylor on the opposite side...
Like I said... I LIKE Wake... but he is NOT being a team player when he REALLY needs to just be patient and let it work out... He IS under contract... RIGHT???
Or does that final year just mean nothing cause you want more $$$...???

You Cubans have gone too far this time. You are pseudoeducated. Do you know about how it was under Batista before Castro, Armando? Read a little.
It appears democracy is not really ingrained into Hispanic nations.
The Miami "Exile" Mafia is such a disaster.
I hate Castro not for the reason the Mafia does, but because of him we have what Miami now is.

I keep coming over here hoping to God someone "Gets it".... It just does not seem Armando wants to slow down from learning how to play "Shock Jock" long enough to reign in his blog... So... just like the SS... we all left and made new ones on our own...

I started laughing at the post that said Wake wasn't a game changer. Man that guy more to change games in Miami's favor in the last 2 seasons until matt Moore found his stride.
He only has a couple of moves so, what is he worth? I would say a heck of a lot more the 650 k. Weren't we paying that fat toad Carrey 5 mil and what about the run away from the guy carrying the ball Crowder.
Maybe Philbins offense is going to be so good we don't need a defense. Did anyone ever consider that?

Odinseye and "We Have Draft Picks"
Guys, he shouldn't "hold out". Its not the best way to manage the situation. I know he's grossly underpaid and realize his side of the equation and the whole "one hit away" from retirement argument. Have your agent contact the FO every day about a new deal and if that doesn't work; contact them twice. Show up to practice and impress the new coaches. Be a pro.
Just for the record; nobody has guaranteed jobs from the Milkman to Obama. I realize these young men studied footbal in college and have a small window of opportunity. Wake will have made $5M in four years after 2011. Had he studied Engineering; $80K gross avg annual income over 40-yrs, he's still ahead over $1M.
Again, he's underpaid. But, he should show up for work.
Posted by: AZPhinfan | April 10, 2012 at 04:13 PM
So release him them! Terminate his contract then! Oh wait, you ain't laughing now are you? If he isn't a game changer then just release him! Let the man go somewhere else!
But of course, you ignorant morons know for a FACT Wake is the best defensive player we have on the team.
You still laughing? I'm laughing at how ignorant and buffoonish this organization and fans have become.

from the bread crumbs I've read...
The Dolphins front office has taken on a culture of intruding and distracting the players during home weeks (with Sales and Promotions crap) and screwing with many of them during contract time.
