Ireland: No pressure to draft Tannehill from Ross

No one knows what the truth is when sources are involved in a report until something actually happens to support one side or another. This morning, for example, I reported the Dolphins are releasing Phillip Merling, citing an unnamed source.

Well, the Dolphins have released Phillip Merling today.

But sometimes it's impossible to know the truth no matter what happens. Such is the case with the respectful back and forth I've apparently walked into with both Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com and respected NFL beat writer Peter King.

Last night, Florio reported Dolphins owner Steve Ross is "pushing" the Dolphins to pick Ryan Tannehill. The report, important if accurate because it would mean a real estate developer is pushing the buttons on Miami's football decisions, prompted me to reach out to several sources.

I got word back from one of them who vehemently denied the report. The source is very, very, very high up in the Dolphins organization.

Anyway, this morning King also reported the same thing Florio reported. I was thus outnumbered on the anonymous source front!

Except that this afternoon, Florio hosted a segment with Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland on his PFT Live broadcast . And Florio asked him about his report verus my report, including my "very, very, very" description of my source.

"I would tell you Steve is very engaged but he's also very supportive of leaving the decision in the draft up to me and coach Philbin, our scouts and football staff," Ireland said. "I said in my opening press conference last week that I don't feel at all any pressure to draft a need position or anything like that. And I would segue this comment in there: I don't feel pressure from the owner. And he's not pressuring me for that matter. I don't know where that's coming from.

"He's allows me to make the football decisions. He's always allowed me to make the football decisions along with my head coach and our staff. So he understands the process. He understands the thought process. he stands by our draft analysis and he knows the kind of preparation that goes into it and he's fully supportive."

Thus I now outflank Florio and King with an actual on-the-record response. Yeah, just having some fun here because this is the truth:

We don't know the truth.

It is possible Florio and King are totally wrong, as my source and Ireland are saying. On the other hand, it is possible my source is trying to use me (bad idea because that would make me very angry and the Dolphins shouldn't want me writing angry because I'm good at it) and thus I would be wrong.

How will we know?

Well, if the Dolphins do not draft Tannehill, Florio and King were wrong. The fact is Ross is the owner and if he truly is "pushing" Ireland to pick Tannehill, I can pretty much assure you that will get done because Ross signs the checks. So if Tannehill isn't the pick, there's no way he was pushing Ireland toward Tannehill in the first place.

And what if Tannehill is the pick? I guess some of you would say that vindicates Florio and King. I say it only means that's the pick and we all figured that was the way it might go the entire time, dating back a month or more since Peyton Manning went to Denver.

Bottom line? We may never know for sure on this one.

By the way, I got the blogger from Bleacher Report to include your post at the end of his regurgitated story yesterday. While he was kind enough to include the link to your blog, it doesn't excuse his lack of originality or responsibility to check facts.

Again, Mando, nicely done.

TED GINN THE GREAT SIGNED A ONE YEAR DEAL TOTAL OF 6.7 MILLION DONKEYS WITH SF ........

THEY RUSHED TO SIGN HIM AFTER HE VISITED DET.......

Crusher gets exactly!

I'd like to see them get Decastro.Look at the Niners, they have a mediocre QB,servicable WR's,a great running back & a great TE, but that young O line is an Butt-kicking machine. We line it up like this:
Long(LT)-Incognito(LG)-Pouncy(C)-Decastro(RG)-Jerry(RT)

A great O line makes everything on offense better, & a great O line makes the D better(3 minutes left-run clock-Brady never see's ball-D on sidelines drinking gatorade-game over)

With the next pick take Weeden or Cousins.

Only if more cellar dwelling dolphins fans would wake up too. The picks they want only keeps us closer to the cellar. Bellichik's smiling!

Man the only thing keeping us in the cellar is the lack of team work. The players on defense even said there was a lack of communication in the secondary. It was not the ability but the team work. Do not make things up to blame the answers are right in front of you.

The Dolphins let Langford go in FA and then sign Merling. THEN, they cut Merling. Thank goodness the free agency period is almost over. The next thing you know, they would send Wake to New England for a seventh round draft pick.

Both Merling and Langford were busts. Along with Pat White and Chad Henne.

The draft? The Dolphins sure have a lot of needs for a team in year five of a rebuild. The wins after starting 0-7 really hurt the draft positioning as well.

Only four teams have drafted fewer All-Pros than Miami in the last decade. And Miami has been picking pretty high during almost every year.

The OL, with all the massive investment in draft picks and free agency signings, was ranked 30th last year. 30th.

The defense is a total joke against the pass.

The team has needs all over the roster. Its best player has had a number of injuries over the past couple of seasons.

The salary cap has been horribly mismanaged.

The Dolphins are terrified to take a risk because they have misbuilt the team for so long that a mistake now would set the team back for years.

They have no QB of the future and not a single elite playmaker on the team. The losing has destroyed the fan base and the team has no plan to fix things beyond more drafting of OL, DL, LB, and possibly CB.

Write off 2012. The front office has.

IS IT TRUE YOU CAN BLOG DECASTRO FROM DAY ONE IN A TEAM AND SHOW RESULTS RIGHT AWAY ?????????

As it ocurred to anyone:

That the current player dispoval machine are players Sparano protected and are not neccessarily Ireland favorites. Has it rung a bell yet that Sparano was thier "free lunch" ticket?

It's going to be a very interesting camp and preseason. Let's see how many more Sparano favorites Philbin/Ireland axe falls on.

My only comments about earlier.

(All you regulars please note that I am not attacking anyone and posted a Football related post first. This is because of the retaliation I almost always expect just for showing up here((Pretty sad when I have to ask for backup just to post my opinion).

I felt Armando came on here and played everyone like a fiddle. His well timed "appearence", coinciding nicely, coincidentally, with another whom most of us suspect is the main culprit behind the problems(I didn't name names or point a finger, for the record). His appearence was meant to calm things down and DIRECT the convo back to football.

All fine and dandy except for two things.

He admonished more than one regular and asked for proof of the "Off Color" Trolling. Basically implying that the troll was a figment of the imagination and not "REALLY" a problem(no names, no fingers).

Again, fine and dandy.

But if Armando felt there was no troll, no problems and even asked for PROOF, then why did he HIMSELF state unequivocally that he showed up here because "Things were getting out of hand"?

How can you have it both ways? How can you deny that trolls are causing problems and then in the next breath say that he came on because things were getting out of hand?

I have LOVED this Blog from the very begining. THAT is the ONLY REASON I've been so overzealous in trying to expose and draw attention to the problem(s). I apologize for my part in the back and forths. However, I will not apologize for standing up for something I feel this strongly about. After all, the CONCEPT behind this blog, was to provide a place where Dolphins Fans could come and **ENJOY**. A place where us Dolphin Fans could come and debate opinions.

I will only post about Football from here on, as yet again, we supposedly have a Cleaned Up blog. All I ask is for some of you other guys to watch and see if I'm not attacked or harrassed for no other reason than showing up and posting my opinions about my/our beloved Dolphins and the NFL.

I hate being associated with all the troubles and I do realize I brought **SOME OF IT** on myself for "Going After" THE blog wrecking troll(s). The thing is though, I shouldn't have had to feel like it needed to be done. It shouldn't have been **ALLOWED** to happen.

Watch my back guys and I'll watch yours.

ValHalla!!!!

(Why do I always sound so corny when I'm trying to be serious?)

Odin :)

Oh Yeah! Almost forgot: Tannehill SUCKS(Football Talk)!

Stay tuned to the next episode of:

It aint finished folks!

AGREE WITH YOUR LAST POST.......

STRONG ROUMOR ...................THE LIONS ARE MOVING UP FROM THEIR 23 SPOT TO GET DAVID SE CASTRO,,,,,,,,,

DE CASTRO

Fact is you all sound like a bunch of gossip queens with crazy imaginations rooted far from reality. Do you really believe what you are saying? It's beyond absurd.

-Decastro
-Weeden or Cousins (& take a developmental QB every year, its the Packer Freakin Way)
-rest of the draft: 2 WR's,2 DE/OLB's, 2 developmental/versitile O lineman

Goodnight Dolphinland.About 70 hours and counting.

If they pick who YOU want, you will feel PROUD and gloat, I told ya so, I told ya so, and if they don't pick who YOU want, you will right them off as stupid losers.

Heck, I wish we did have Kyle Orton, he's better then any QB on our roster.

WHAT IF JETS MOVE UP AS THE NEW ENGLAND DO TO US............ WE BETTER HAVE PLANS AND STICK TO THEM........

I'll be happy to get a great oline. Weak olines cause a many griefs and misevaluations.

Weak olines expose many offensive players to a greater number of injuries. That includes the qb and the olinemen themselves.

That includes defensive players, they're exposed to much more time on the field, meaning far greater risk of injury. A great oline can cure a many ills, including making your good nplayers even betterb players.

they are picking tannehill, we all know that. but we are clueless as far as the next 7 picks go

YG....... DAVID SOULD LIKE HE WILL BE GONE BY THE 12 IN THE FIRST ROUND .......

Burger,

The great Tom Brady would only be above average at best behind our current oline.

Add DeCastro to the Long/Poucey mix and even Matt Moore may look like a bhorderline franchise qb. But nit wouldnt matter because it would also step upn the production of the pieces around him.

YG.....DAVID DECASTRO SEEMS ,HE BE GONE BY THE 12 SPOT IN THE FIRST ROUND ............

HE WILL BE GONE

OL's dont matter. Its all about the QB in todays game.

ALoco,

Doesnt mean DeCastro is coveted by everyone. He's the right pick for us because we already have Long/Pouncey. For us he's the missing dominant piece to having a truly great oline.

DeCastro alone wouldnt have great effect on a team with 4 crappy olinemen around him. But he's a per4fect fit for this team because we already have Long/Pouncey.

LT--Long
LG--Cogs
C---Pouncey
RG--DeCastro
RT-- Jerry(perhaps)

If Jerry can hold down RT, that atruly a great oline on the rise.

I LIKE TO SEE TANNEHILL DRAFTED BY US IF HE STILL THERE IN A HEART BEAT .........

IT'S ABOUT THE QB TO GET OUT OF THE CELLAR .......

Odin, I've always had your back, will continue to do so.

YG.....HOW CAN WE NOT DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND ?

IRELAND WILL BE FIRED THE NEXT DAY.......

With Cogs, Pouncey, and DeCastro in the middle of our offensive line. That would be tough for any defense to handle. Then Long on the outside, and Jerry if he holds down RT, We would be dominating and solid on both the oline flanks too.

WHAT IF........

LONG GET TRADED FOR INJURY REASONS .........

AND POUNCY TURN TO BE OVERRATED ...............

yg not gonna happen so why talk about it. lets focus on rd 2, tannehill is the first choice. everyone knows this

TANNEHILL IS THE SAVIOR FOR IRELAND'S JOB FOR ANOTHER 2 TEARS.........

This will be a draft hopefully more reflective of Philbin than just Ireland. I loved Sparano but I think he was in over his head, and you know the coach gets an opinion on the draft. Let's hope Philbin has his act together and can guide toward reasonable picks. Ireland still worries me.

ALoco,

Tannehill isnt a true 1st rd qb. Just think what if Barkley and Landry declared? Tannehill would be 2nd rd at best right?

Then all Barkley and Landry mnot declaring means, if we take Tannehill 1st rd, all we did was really draft a 2nd rd qb 1st rd.

You dont draft a 2nd rd qb just for the sake of saying you drafted a 1st rd qb. You really didnt draft a 1st rd qb, you drafted a 2nd rd qb in the 1st rd. There really is a difference.

If I was drafting a 2nd rd qb, I rather take Cousins. At least he can actually be had in the 2nd rd.

Drafting Tannehill 1st rd immediately downgrades your entire draft. It's like you never had a 1st rd pick. Its like beginning your draft with 2 2nd rd picks.

Tannehill means we didnt have a 1st rd pick. We had two 2nd rd picks instead. Tannehill is a 2nd rd pick, and some experts predicting he wont be fully starter ready for 2-3yrs on the bench, hurts matters even more.

ALoco,

You still dont get it. DeCastro is the savior for Ireland's job. Cousins is projected to be ready to start before Tannehill and he only will cost a 2nd rd pick. No one has even guaranteed Tannehill has potential to become a franchise qb.

Have you yet to hear Tannehill's name and franchise qb mentioned in the same breath? Absolutely not. They only rave about Tannehill's physical tools. There're lots of unemployed qb's with great physical tools. LOL

THE EXPERTS CAN GO TO HELL.......WE MISSED ON ANDY DALTON B/C OUR GARAGE MANAGER LISTENED TO THEM..........

I REMEMBER ONE EXPERT (MY FOOT )) SAYING........

NEVER IN THE NFL WE HAD A RED HAIRED GUY LIKE ANDY SUCCEED ..........

PS...THEY DIDN'T LIKE HIM B/C HE HAS RED HAIR........

yg nobody is arguing with u about tannehill. but it doesnt matter, miami is taking him

YG....... HERE IN BOSTON...IT'S KNOWN THAT BRADY AND MATT CASELL AND HOYER AND MALLET WERE ALL DRAFTED BASED ON THEIR PHYSICAL TOOLS........THEN THEY MOLD THEM INTO THE TEAM ......

ALoco,

I wouldnt be so high on DeCastro if he was the typical run of the mill mid to bottom 1st rd og. DeCastro is a rare og even for the 1st rd of any draft. Rarely are even 1st rd og's this well rounded and smart to boot. He's special even for the guard position.

Add a player like this to Long/Pouncey and you truly got something extremely special going on with your oline. I can almost guarantee we wont be in position to get a og quitye as special as DeCastro anytime soon.

I BELIEVE YOU YG ,I READ THAT THE LIONS AND THE COWBOYS WILL MOVE UP TO GET HIM ......

ALoco,

But they are behind great olines. Matt Cassle hasnt looked close to what he was behind the Pats oline. Think about ALoco, youre in Boston, Im sure you get to see and hear lots about the Pats oline.

Brady would only be slightly above average behind our sucky oline last year. I no way see Brady putting up top 5 numbers behind our oline. Columbo almost assured he could have ended up on injured reserve halfway thru the season.

Brady doesnt move as well as Matt Moore. LOL

THAT'S WHERE COACHES COME IN.............

THE SYSTEM,THE HC,TH OC....ALL THESE FACTORS ARE VERY IMPORTANT ........

IF BRADY IS IN MIAMI UNDER THE PIZZA COACH ,HW WOULD BE RETIRED YEARS AGO LIKE HENNE .........

disagree 100 percent yg. bradys a hof regardless. come on man u know this. moore is a solid backup qb

HE

ALoco,

Im sure any team that feels they are halfway to having a great oline would love to add DeCastro to the mix. We're halfway there(Long/Pouncey) and cant afford to let that golden opportunity pass.

A great oline instantly makes your entire team better!

YG........ SO LAST 12 YEARS IN THE CELLAR AND ALL B/C WE DIDN'T HAVE GREAT OL ?

so does a qb, just because u think tannehill isnt good doesnt mean they do

dusty bottom,

I used the Brady analogy only to show that even a hof calibre qb can look crappy when not adequately protected.

My point is during games when his oline isnt adequately protecting Brady even his game begins to fall apart. That shows if you cant adequately protect your qb it doesnt matter if he's Tom Brady or Homer Simpson.

brady with our current line would win east easily

ALoco,

We've had myriads of problems throughout those years, But each and everyone of them were oline associated to some degree. Some years worst than others.

However, I guarrantee when you take a deep look at some of those worst ever years, you'll also find some of our worst ever olines also key in the mix.

Never once did we have a great oline and still had a team that truly sucked. So take what you will from that.

when did we have a great qb and really suck?

Dusty,

"Currently" we dont even have a starting RG or RT. Its almost guaranteed Columbo and Carey wont be starters on this team this year.

So to say Brady would win with what we currently have is highly inaccurate. Currently we dont even know who our starting RT and OG will be.

But if you're speaking of last season, buddy thats nuts. Columbo alone would have gotten Brady Killed. Great for us Matt Moore was athletically mobile. Brady only slides in the pocket well. There isnt a pocket to slide into with Columbo. LOL

THE REASON FOR BEING IN THE CELLAR FOR YEARS,WE NEVE STICK TO A LONG TERM PLAN ,AS WE WITH THE TUNA,ROSS DIDN'T LET HIM FINISH WHAT HE STARTED ......... THE SAME WITH THIS CORN BEEF COACH ,IF WE DON'T THINK DIFFERENT AND DRAFT A QB IN FIRST ROUND......... YOU BETTER SIGN A CELLAR LEASE FOR ANOTHER 3 YEARS ..

columbo retired. murtha will start. jerry has chance to start

Dan Marino. He had a run game that totally sucked.n Our oline pass blocked with the best of them, but you could draft 5 cheerleaders to stop our run game.

Dusty, does that suck enough for you?

and i dont care if your on the oline with brady, we still win

YG. I WOULD LOVE A QB WHO SLIDES TO SIDES BUT HE CAN GET US 3 RINGS IN 8 YEARS AND NEVER SEE THE CELLAR WALLS.

Dusty,

Im very happy putting Jerry and Murtha sounds like a real plan to you. If that happens I personally pla not to watch much Dolphin football this year. It could get really ugly at times.

no u said really suck. we went to the playoffs many many many times with marino and company. and if the oline sucked during his career also when are u talking about then with a great oline? the 70's? lol

YG......... DUSTY GOT YOU GOOD ON HIS POST @ 12;10 AM

yg we are rebuilding, its gonna be ugly regardless man. give philbin a couple years would ya
