McShay: The draft turns with Cleveland's pick

Dolphins fans know their team has the No. 8 overall pick in the draft. Good pick. Elite pick. But fans are rightly focused on what might happen at pick No. 4 before concentrating on No. 8 because many believe the draft's direction will be decided there.

Simply, the Indianapolis Colts are picking Andrew Luck at No. 1.

The Washington Redskins will pick Robert Griffin III at No. 2.

Most pundits believe the Vikings will pick USC left tackle Matt Kalil with the No. 3 pick.

The Browns, meanwhile, are the wildcard. They can trade the pick. Or they can draft. They can take a running back (Trent Richardson). They can take a receiver (Justin Blackmon). They can take a quarterback (Ryan Tannehill).

"I think the whole draft swings at number 4," ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said this week. "I say that because the Browns really do need almost all the top prospects that will be available at that spot.  They have a wide receiver need, and you've got Justin Blackmon who is most likely available to you.  You've got a need for running back.  You've got to upgrade that position.  You look at the last couple years, Hardesty is their top back, and he can't stay healthy.  He's three yards per carry in his career.

"You've got Little and Massaquoi as your top two wide receivers, and don't have a number one guy. Then quarterback maybe your third or fourth biggest need when you look at urgency.  But it's still a big need, and I think everyone understands that they need ‑‑ whether it's this year or next year, got to find an upgrade over Colt McCoy moving forward for this franchise to take a giant leap."

McShay, like many of you, looks at Tannehill as a possibility and wonders if he's worthy of No. 8 or perhaps even requiring a trade-up.

"It's frustrating, I know, when you look at Tannehill and how quickly he's risen in only 19 starts, and the production isn't elite and the completion percentage and all of that, but I would have a very difficult time passing on him at that number 4 pick," he said. "I just think that he has everything you look for in a future franchise quarterback if you develop him properly and you're willing to be patient.  So that's where Colt McCoy comes in to me.

"You know that you can win some games and you've got a young quarterback.  Yes, Colt may be frustrated, but I know Colt well enough that he's going to do what's right for the team and handle the situation properly at least in the short term.  Then maybe they can trade him and move on.

"But if you bring in Tannehill and sit him for ideally a year or the majority of the year and put him in towards the end of the year to get him some experience, I just think that you're looking at an organization that has its future franchise quarterback.  Has a guy with all the physical tools, the size, arm strength, accuracy, which continues to improve.  Has the right mentality, can handle pressure, and has intangibles through the roof."

McShay believes Tannehill is a bigger value than either Richardson or Blackmon.

"Richardson is going to be a phenomenal back ...," McShay said. "Blackmon, he's probably going to be in that second tier of wide receivers in the NFL, and that's great.  But they don't win Super Bowls.  We haven't seen Adrian Peterson win a Super Bowl.  We haven't seen Andre Johnson win a Super Bowl.  You have a great quarterback, you win Super Bowls; and I think Tannehill has a chance, if developed properly and patient with him, to become a great quarterback."

DC......@ 2;06 PM, IS THAT WONDERLIC CRAP HAS ANY THING TO DO WITH US LIVING IN THE CELLAR ?

BUSTER ...IT'S NOT HOW MANY PICKS WE GET ,BUT HOW GOOD THEY R .......

Posted by: ALoco | April 03, 2012 at 01:48 PM

Did you figure that out for yourself or did someone tell you.

DC, nailed it, I have been saying something similar for some time.

YG,,,,,,

ARE YOU NOW SAYING MARINO IS ELITE ?

THAT WOULD COUNTER YOUR ARGUMENT .......

IN MY VIEWS MARING WAS AT BEST A VERY GOOD QB.......

ALoco,

I say its better for us to draft Weedon than Tannehill. We could probably trade back as far as the 20 spot, gain at least an extra 2nd rd'er, and possibly still get Weedon.

IMO, Weedon will have more instant impact than Tannehill. Tannehill seems like Chad Henne all over again. Just from a different mother! LOL

Obviously if we're ever going to be contenders we need a franchise QB. Andy Dalton would have been perfect last year but I had no idea he would look as good this quickly. My issue is that I just don't think that guy is Tannehill. If we draft him @ 8, I hope I'm wrong but his stock is rising unnecessarily high just as Ponder's did last year & I think the Vikings really blew it on that pick.

We can talk about that we should do or not do with this draft and tanny, but the new philosophy, is just that... new. None of us know how anyone is going to fit in the philosophy since we aint seen shite yet...

Yesterday's Gone ,

Marino was the biggest choker I've ever seen. Just wasnt a money QB.

yg
i couldn't agree more with your 2:08 post. if we switched marino and montana #13 would have a ring for each finger. if #13 played today he would throw for 6000 yards. just a special talent. hard to believe teams took no ones named eason, blacklidge, and obrian ahead of him.just goes to show what a crapshoot the draft really is

YG.......THERE'S A STRONG RUMOUR THE BROWNS WILL SELECT WEEDON AND LEAVE TANNEHILL FOR US @ 8........

Chad Henne is poised to have a career that includes a super bowl title. I hope we get another Chad Henne, but this time give him a system in which to work.

Yes and no ALoco. It's affected us if we've really been using it to judge talent. It really should only be used for QB and the Mike LB. Nothing else. Not to say everyone else can be dumb, just that they don't need to be geniuses.

By the way, Marino got a 16 (same as Vince Young). So go figure. It's a waste of a test if you ask me.

What do people know about this Barron kid? They're saying he's the best safety in the Draft. Is he worth taking at 8 if Tannehill is gone? I would REALLY, REALLY love a good Safety on the team (almost as much as I'd love an elite QB).

aloco. a decent break down on weeden and other phins prospects. go take a looksy.
lol

jay

football is a team game...marino had none.he was a 1 man show for most of his 17 years here. he had to contend with don shula cronies chuck studley and tom olividatti neither of whom would know defense if it swung shut in their face. no running game ever. no great defense or pass rushers(anyone remember that jeff cross was once our most talented pass rusher. i could go on jay but you are no longer worth the time

DC, unless he is the second coming of Polimallu or how ever the hell you spell it... I would pass. Earl Thomas is a good safty, but does not strike the fear in people. If Barron strikes fear in WR's then I am on board!

Aloco there is no comparison between Eli and Peyton. Peyton is 10X better. Peyton would also have 2 superbowls (which he carries he team to, instead of hte other way around), except he ran into a super duper hot Saints team the 2nd time.

I realize stats are not everything, but Manning is flat out mediocre to bad and has been carried to 2 super bowls by a world class perennial winning organization.

Peyton, on the other hand, showed that he was the MVP of the league 10 years in a row. you saw what the garbage colts are without him. they were garbage before him too. remember in the 80s and 90s when our Fins would crush the afterthought colts?

Eli Manning is literally about as good as Chad Henne (and was worse at the same age)

Peyton DOMINATED games for 10 years AND won, too, unlike Marino, with no running game.

2 WATT...... I DON'T LIKE TO GO TO OTHER SITES TO READ CRAP......WE KNOW THAT WEEDON WILL BE PICKED BY THE BROWNS..........

YG, and all else, you are correct about Marino.

Remember D Gardner, Tim Bowens, Marco Coleman, and Jeff Cross? T-Buck and Troy vincent?

We had some D, but the O was way to fast for the D to keep stamina. And the run game sucked big time!

Eli on the other hand is 55% 20/17 TD/INT ratio barely above 500% winning % and even this year backed in to the playoffs at 4-5.

The Giants got hot at the right time. As always, the super bowl does not necessarily reflect the league. Giants were about the 8th best team in the league last year. Eli was about 20th best QB.

"Check out what Moore did in the last nine weeks of the regular season versus a rather prominent Super Bowl hero:

Matt Moore vs. Eli Manning
W-L Comp% Yards TD-Int Rating

Moore, Miami 6-3 .612 1,791 15-5 97.8

E. Manning, NY 4-5 .583 2,806 16-11 86.4"

Smoke,

Yeah....I would still take Eli Manning though. The Giants had to play against the Saints, GB, & SF which kind of skews that win-loss record for Eli.

However, Moore did play well for us. I was very impressed with him & perhaps will thrive even more so in Philbin/Sherman's system. The thing that probably pissed me off the most during this off-season was Ireland's QB comments & the lack of praise for Matt Moore who saved us from going 1-15 again. He's the guy who may have actually saved Ireland's job. Of course now that Ireland hasn't upgraded the position he ONLY good things to say about Moore....LOL!!!! What a jerkoff.

jonathan

too much smoke buddy. peyton dominated in a girls division against the texan, jags, and titans. he played indoors, and he played in a time when you cant smile at a wide receiver without getting a flag. please leave marino out of it.the guy was great.period!

JONTHAN....WITH ALL DUE RESPECT ..AN ELITE QB WHO WINS SUPER BOWLS AND FRANCHISE QB WHO GOT BEATEN BT AN ELITE QB LIKE THE CASE OF BRADY BEATING P.MANNING FOR YEArs ......

the history bookd don't care about that MVP CRAP .........HISTORY CARES ABOUT ;;;;;;

RINGS
RINGS

MONTANA
BRADY

ELI

ALoco,

Im saying even with an elite qb, he can be beaten by another elite qb who has better talent around him on both sides of the ball.

Marino did get to one sb. But you gotta remember, 2 elite afc qb's kept Marino from appearing in another sb because they had better talent on both sides of the ball around them. They were:

Jim Kelly

He lost 4 SB's, but all to Phil Simms, Troy Aikman, Thiesman. All elite qb's of thier era.

John Elway

Broncos always at least had a better defense even before Terrill Davis.

Therefore, I say even with elite qb's you also have to surround them with good enough talent on both sides of the ball to beat other elite qb's who have that type talent around.

Still bringing nin a franchise qb to face an elite qb is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

41phish,

Marino had a great back in Tony Nathan. Heck, Brady won one SB with no WR's and another with no RB's. P Manning won a SB with no defense. Did you know Marino won one road playoff game in 17 years? I made a small fortune betting against him in the big games. He dissapeared when his team needed him the most. But keep making excuses for him.

Agree on Moore draft picks.

Let me illustrate my prior comments. You gave me a perfect window.

The New York Giants are a Class A winning organization. They win a super bowl at least twice per decade since the 80s.

Our Fins, on the other hand, are a garbage organization since 1990.

READ THIS; I MEAN THIS LITERALLY: HAD ELI MANNING SOMEHOW BEEN DRAFTED BY MIAMI AND STARTED HIS CAREER WITH US, HE'D HAVE BEEN RUN OUT OF TOWN THE SAME WAY HENNE WAS RUN OUT OF TOWN.

It's the entire organization: The Giants are winners. The Fins (recently) are losers.

Eli was *TERRIBLE* his first 5 years in the league, but the Giants stood with him and let him grow.

All we can hope for now is that Philbin and his system will be good and turn us around.

YG/ALL POSTERS.........

ROM THE GOD FATHER .....(( GOD FATHER ,NOW I HAVE TO LEAVE YOU B/C I KNOW YOUR A BUSY MAN )).

I HAVE TO GO TO WORK ..I ENVY ALL OF YOU..LATER .

FROM

YG,

Big surprise I'd get an answer like that back from you. You can't even string an argument without throwing out insults. That's the sign of someone who's got a weak argument and lack the skills to debate....keep it up buddy....you're par for the course so far.

DC, Barron is and will be a good player in the NFL. I think 8 is way to high to pick him. Good hitter but the doesn't have the skill set of Berry in KC or the kid in Seattle. My fear is he ends up in NE. He's exactly the kind of player BB likes.

jay

please.tony nathan a great back? even he dont think so. when bradys pats beat the greatest show on turf ty law was holding on every play and the refs let it go. again FOOTBALL IS A TEAM GAME. we are talking about elite players here today. WHO was elite besides Marino,Clayton,Duper, and D Stevenson. Ask yourself how Marino would have done on Gibbs' Redskins teams...answer 3 superbowls!!!!

I HAVE TO GO TO WORK

Have fun at Denny's.

"What do people know about this Barron kid? They're saying he's the best safety in the Draft. Is he worth taking at 8 if Tannehill is gone? I would REALLY, REALLY love a good Safety on the team (almost as much as I'd love an elite QB)."

DC,

He's considered by most to be a very good prospect but not elite & not worthy of the 8th pick. He's not Eric Berry.

BTW--I would agree that would need a MUCH better safety (maybe two) BUT there will be top pass rushing talent available @ 8 & w/ Misi not improving in that area last season we need another guy to pair with Wake.

Great players excel in big games. Marino dissapeared in the big games.

WE DON'T HAVE DENNY IN BOSTON...IT'S ONLY IN THE DUMB STATES .....LATER

Guys,

Because of what I have posted. Is exactly why I say its foolish to move up or draft Tannehill. Even McShay himself says, "with proper handling" he could become "a franchise qb".

Franchise qb is his ceiling, really? Playoff fodder for elite qb's, really? LOL

Marino's the best ever. He'd have won every superbowl Montana did if he were on that team. Montana would have won 0 on the Dolphins.

CraigM,

Post something that doesnt sound like you had your head up your rear and you wouldnt be called a dunce. LOL

YG,

Another brilliant post....you add NOTHING of any value....only love to get into name-calling....DUNCE!

Jay, Sorry man,,, Can't buy that one at all. The Buffalo dolphin playoff games, some were very high scoring and up and down the field... cant buy it my friend.

Marino didnt have that refuse to lose ability like the Bradshaws, Brady's, Mannings, or Montana's. He was a local hero but across the country he's called No Ring for a reason. He couldnt get it done.

Thanks guys. I know I'm reaching here. But the 2 positions I'm SICK of talking about EVERY year for this team are QB and S. Filling at least one would do my heart good.

If we could find the next Troy P. That would be nice.

Jay, Sorry man,,, Can't buy that one at all. The Buffalo dolphin playoff games, some were very high scoring and up and down the field... cant buy it my friend.
Posted by: Poizen | April 03, 2012 at 02:37 PM

Thats fine. I'm not asking you or anybody to buy anything.

Mando,

Ugggghhhh....The new Dolphin uniforms are awful!!! Are you sure those aren't for women????

Our linemen are going to look ridiculous. Not sure Reiff would sign here if we took him @ 8 so Ireland may have to go pass rusher.

For the dunce that goes with the initials YG,

What's all this 'franchise' vs 'elite' BS? You're the only guy I know why talks this way? Let me guess, Eli was considered 'franchise' before he won Super Bowls, now he's considered 'elite'? Who gives a f8ck!

We've had inferior QB play from the position since Marino retired. Most of are sick of it. We want improved QB play from the position and we realize that leads to winning. The arguments been made MANY times....Tom Brady wasn't conider 'elite' or 'franchise' or whatever you want to call it. that's why he went 6th round. Neither was Montana. Neither was Kurt Warner. It IMPOSSIBLE to know what their ceiling is down the road. You don't know and they guys who get paid to do this don't know. So don't get into semantics and labels because again....YOU DON'T KNOW.

Jebediah,

Marino would have been a better fit on those Giants team. He would have won 4-5 sb's with them. Yeah he would have been great with the 49ers too. Its just that his mobility issues would have limited what they could do with him in the wco.

You have to remember, Marino wasnt a mobile qb. He was good at sliding in the pocket and had the lightning quick release. WCO demands a mobile qb(Montana, Young). Lots of roll outs and throwing on the run.

Marino would have been very limited in that aspect. So, he would have absolutely dominated with the Giants great run game and defense. Add Marino's natural passer abilities and thew Giants may have reeled off 4-5 sb championships straight.

I'm confused on how you can get rid of your starting Q back ( Henne) for a crip like Garrard and then struggle to find someone to compete with Moore. I don't want to waste a pic on this Tannehill kid. What a waste. How have we gotten so lost in this league? I know Philbin is wondering what the hell he got himself into...

WHDP... They look the same for the most part, what are you seeing that is not good?

mando your problem is you listen to these idi ots in ESPN. If they knew what they were talking about they'd be working for an NFL team

Watchout everyone, CraigM's getting upset. He throwing f-bombs, lest run for cover. LOL

I remember what happened when the Fins played the Jags in the playoffs.

I hope that ends our conversation YG. Go back to telling us that Tannehill is third round. Surprised the NFL Network hasn't snapped you up yet because obviously the guys who supposedly know what they are talking about don't....because you obviously know more than they do. I'm sure you've made a lot more money in personnel departments than they have.

By the way, is Sparano still the most sought after HC candidate out there this offseason?.....EXACTLY.

"Thanks guys. I know I'm reaching here. But the 2 positions I'm SICK of talking about EVERY year for this team are QB and S. Filling at least one would do my heart good."

DC,

Personally I'm sick of us not addressing RT or RG. I lost confidence in Carey in 2008 & we keep missing @ RG.

craig m is right.

YG, you will recall, is a 7-time member of my top 5 stupidest people here list.

I don't see the Browns taking Tannehill, but what scares me is that they convince Miami that they are, and Miami trades the franchise for, at best, a late 1st round pick. Miami should be patient, keep their draft picks, and if they want Tannhill hope he's there at 8, and if not, take a RT, or a DE/OLB.

What happened when Tannehill faced the great RG3 head to head?

WHDP, you can cheer up about the lines. We're changing to the zone blocking scheme. Philbin SHOULD be a MUCH better teacher than Sparano. Since he also knows about good total offense, I think he'll help develop the linemen to be a better group. Not sure Jerry will fit though. Zone blocking requires more athletic (smaller) linemen. These Colombo guys who can't move their feet are dinosaurs.

Our line should look MUCH better this Season (even without new talent). Artis Hicks will play on the rt side too. He knows the scheme.

Tannehill is tall.

Multiple Super Bowl winners Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady are also tall.

They can throw very tall, over the massive linemen.

CraigM,

What I dont get about Tannehill people like you is youre so high on him without properply evaluating his college production. He ran a tru pro wco in college.

Guess what? He was highly inconsistent with his accuracy. If he had a "pro hc" in college, who also has sb championship rings running the wco, and Tannehill still didnt dominate the college landscape with it. What makes you guys think he'll magically become a great wco qb in the pros?

For Christ sakes, his completion percentage read like a heart attack chart on the college level. He'll face far better defender on the pro level. This guy only looks like a more athletic Chad Henne just waiting to happen. LOL

YG, you unmitigated idiot, ending your posts with "LOL":

1. makes you look like a girl; and

2. adds absolutely no extra weight to your (stupid) argument.

Bumble Bee Tuna,

That's the greatest riddle of all about Tannehill. He beat RG3. Was RG3 having his worst game of the season. Or was Tannehill holding true to form in that on any given Saturday, Texas A&M fans hadnt a clue which Ryan Tannehill might show up?

Woul it be the 80%, 40%, or anywhere inbetween mediocre, slightly good? Tannehill was a heart attack ekg reading for sure. Just ask A&M fans!

PS, Tannehill got Mike Sherman fired. Enuff said! LOL
