Miami Dolphins in trade-down mode

I alluded yesterday to the idea the Dolphins could trade down from the No. 8 overall selection in the first round and today that idea is picking up steam as multiple club sources are telling me at this hour Miami has spoken to at least three teams about moving back.

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said at his pre-draft press conference that moving up and moving back are both possibilities. Well, moving up not so much.

Moving back definitely has a chance.

Simply, the Dolphins like the idea of possibly trading back two to 8 slots and picking up a second-round selection for their trouble. That's why Ireland has been in talks with the teams to gauge that possibility.

That doesn't mean the Dolphins absolutely are trading back. We won't know until the process begins and players start to come off the board. But Miami wants to be prepared.

The Dolphins are obviously in a good position for this move because players such as Mark Barron, Fletcher Cox, and some believe Justin Blackmon, might be on the board when the Dolphins select. Those players could cause other teams to place a higher value on Miami's slot than even the Dolphins do.

We shall see.

We should be in good shape tonight. Ireland, Philbin, Sherman, enough of a British intellect there. With Sparano and Pasquarini, it was too much of a sicilian sorority to get anything done with brains.

Cousins is going to be a stud. He has the "it" factor. Tannehill has the "loser" factor. Didn't play well in big games and lost big leads.

I would rather take a sure thing at #8 and Cousins in late 2nd, early 3rd then gamble with Tannehill.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet !!!!!!!!!!!

MOVE UP OR DOWN ,DOESN'T DO ANY THING.......IN THE LAST FEW YEARS WE MOVED DOWN AND UP ..STILL WE ENDED IN THE CELLAR .......

TANNEHILL IS THE ...PICK ....

Just hope Ireland doesn't waste the extra picks from the Marshall trade & a potential trade down on another back up RB.

Aloco, still in caps I see.

How's your iguana? Did you ever figure out what to feed it or did it die or starvation?

Open to a trade down sure sounds like they have no interest in taking Tannehill, which is good.

EVERY YEAR WE GO THROUGH THE SAME CRAP AND WE END UP IN THE CELLAR.......

WE WILL PICK TANNEHILL...ROSS CAN'T AFFORD TO MISS ON HIM ,IF HE STILL AROUND @ 8......

The bottom line is the Dolphins already have a QB in Moore that 1) knows how to win in the NFL and 2) I believe can thrive in the WCO for at least the next year and perhaps more.

Are the Phins a player away from being ELITE on the Defensive side of the ball? If they are and they pass on a DE/DT prospect in the 1st round they may be doing precisely the wrong thing to help this team win now.

Adding a Coples, Cox, Ingram, etc to the defensive side of the ball plus the addition of the WCO with Moore (a QB that does not need to be trained on how to win in the league) could be the recipe for a playoff run right now. Not in two years. Now.

If the Dolphins select a young QB in the 1st they still have to sit him. Why? Because he is NOT going to come in right away an win ball games. He is not going to do that for this team. Not against NFL defenses he isn't. This causes all kinds of problems for your starter Moore and I think it has the makings of a disaster written all over it. The better play is to get your developmental guy later, not in the 1st round where there will be too much pressure on him to come in and win right away. If he is not going to come in and be the franchise guy right now then he is not your franchise guy. However the media may want to pin that into fiction, he isn't that guy right now.

If I were Ross I wouldn't want to be within 1000 miles of that draft room tonight. If I were Ross I would not want to influence the selection in the slightest bit by looking over my GM's shoulder in that room.

With Ross in the room tonight the whole thing smells rotten. Ross does not know football. He himself admits that. As a result he should get his butt out of there rapidly and let his guys DO THEIR JOBS. If he is in that room he is influencing the process and he doesn't know enough about football to influence this process in any other way than what the media and other owners want him to. He is a liability in that room and in this process and if he really wanted the Phins to succeed he would get out of there fast.

ONE THING.......... IRELAND COULD PICK BLCKMON BY MOVING UP ......BY MOVIN TO NO 3 ....

And on the Wunderlich score, unless Tannehill took that test while being chased by a 300 pound lineman it really doesn't mean much on game day. Unless Mario Williams was chasing his butt around while that test was being taken, it really doesn't mean that much.

I PREDICT IRELAND WILL MOVE UP AND PICK BLACKMON.....

WE WILL OVE UP @ NO 3 AND PICK BLACKMON..........

Move back and pick up another 2nd round pick. Then we have 4 picks in Rounds 2 & 3

Double up Tanne and Cousins!!!

STEVE,

THEN WE HAVE 200 PICKS AND STAY IN THE CELLAR.........

WE NOT @ DOMINO'S PIZZA HERE,BUY ONE ,GET 5 FREE ......WE NEED A PLAYER TO MOVE US FROM THE CELLAR //////AND MOVE TO ELITE TEAMS....

Love Chips's comment.

I agree with those who say we should get a stud pass rusher, stud DB, stud RT, and stud WR.

Moore is our QB.

The value is moving back unless Blackmon falls to number 8 which will not happen. Moving back say to 14 with Dallas allows up to pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick. At 14 a pass rusher will be a value pick.

If they trade down they need to pick up more than just a 2nd rder especially if they trade down past 14 say with the chargers or Lions. They need to start acquiring picks in next years draft as well. No discount deal for Dallas(although getting a 2nd from dallas would be a good fallback if San Diego or Detroit dont bite.) and if Detroit and San Diego want to trade up they need to get a first next year as well.

It still shafes my ass that Ireland dropped as for as he did with the Chargers and only got a 2nd.

Moving back is a very good move. This draft is loaded with recievers and it would be awesome if we can pick up an elite TE (fleener) and a 6'2" WR with sub 4.5 speed.

I have also been a huge advocate of adding a stud safety. IF we stay at 8, we should go after Barron.

OUR CORN BEEF COACH SHOULD STAND UP AND DEMAND A GREAT SURE PLAYER TO TAKE THIS CELLAR TEAM TO A NEW HIGHTS ........
AND SAY..................

NO TO MOVING BACK ........

I SAY WE SHOULD GET JENORIS JENKINS IN THE SECOND ROUND AFTER WE TRADE DOWN, EVEN THOUGH HE PLAYED FOR FLORIDA IM TELLIN THAT KID IS A STUD

Its about freaking time: need to see a deep draft something like the following:

1-17- Shea mclellin (in aqua- sik)
2-8 Zeitler OG Wisc
2- 17 Osweiler
3- McNutt
3. Brandon Taylor/ Dwayne Allen if he slips
4. Ty Hilton
5. Tommy Streeter
6. Audie Cole (walter has him slipping this far)

My two cents....I cant see FO not taking care of Cam Wake..spend your 1st Round on the best available compliment Pass rusher on other side. Matt Moore went 6-3, in a system that got everyone fired..and wasnt even on the roster to start the season...so a FULL off season, Moore could be just fine...and Garrard could be one of the best back ups in the NFL...so where would Tanny even fit?? And is Tanny that much better than say Kirk Cousins? If both are going to carry a clip board, then why not take a NEED and get your Pass Rusher, since there are only a few that can start right away, and get your clip board carrier in the 2nd round...and lets support Moore and see what he can do when he actually has time to learn the system...

No first round QB pick since Marino. Moore is not the elite QB of the future. If u can trade back two spots and still get Tanny, fine. If not, we don't need a bunch of picks that may or may not work out. I want ELITE players, not acorns

If Blackmon some how falls to #8. You take him. enough said. But, the Fins won't.

boddyd

what if tanny is a Gabbert ?
But what if ?
You just GINNd yourself for life

We'll see if Jeff is willing to "pick up the phone" this year.. Literally! We should be able to SEE if he will actually pick up the phone this year or not.. LOL

IRELAND AND HIS OLD WAY OF MOVING DOWN FOR MORE PICKS ,IT GUARANTEE ONLY ONE THING.........

THE CELLAR ........

Yeah, the original deal with the Chargers was a bad one as Miami only got a 2nd to move way down. Here you are looking at a drop to the mid-first round, where there still should be some quality players with little risk. You may not get the exact position you want, but you will be able to get a top caliber player (or maybe still Tannehill). Miami can do this as they still have numerous needs.

Trading back 2-8 picks is an EXCELLENT idea for the Dolphins, if the deal is there. I'm sure any such deal though would have to wait until Miami is on the clock. If a Elite-6 player like Blackmon was to fall for some crazy reason, Miami may still make the selection or the pick will be even more valuable to trade.

Only way Miami picks Tannehill at #8 is if they can't get decent value trading back (a real possibility).

Besides of course picking up extra picks (in this draft or 2013) Miami could also try to move up in the 3rd round. Perhaps they trade one of those third rounders for a #2 as part of a trade down. If they are targeting Cousins (hopefully) it would be ideal to select him in the mid to lower portion of Round #2.

True value for Tannehill will be to trade down, and grab him.

He is overvalued @ 8.

Package deal, We send Ireland with a 1st pick, for someone's 1st round pick, and two seven round picks.

If u can get a 7th rounder form Ireland, DO IT.
Let my grannie pick tonight, she will simply use mayock mock and whoop ireland.

Anyone know how i can get to Ohio's site?

Michael, what ifs is the problem with this team. There is always chances but the Dolphins need ELITE PLAYMAKERS, not solid or average 2nd and 3rd rounders. It's almost been 30 years since we took a QB in the first round. As far as I am concerned, they need to double down on QBs, till we get it right. Less then 30,000 season ticket holders renewed this year, all games will probably be blacked out at home. Enough playing it safe, pick Tanny, and pick someone else.

The Dolphins must change back to the former stencil dolphin logo before they can get back any respect in this league. The current logo looks like a Disney character.

Ireland stay true to your colors and don't reach. Especially at #8!

If they do trade back , to let's say 14(Cowboys)Tannehill will still be there. Those who think KC or Seattle are interested in Tannehill are being fooled. These teams want someone to take him before they pick so one more player is available to them when they choose.

If u can get a 7th rounder form Ireland, DO IT.

>>> If you can GIVE a 7th rounder to get rid of Ireland, DO IT!

I must say your comments are less than inspirational ALoco.

All hail the great Tim Couch, the Browns' all time leading completion % QB.

We need elite players?

Double down on QB's?

The best QB's left on the board are gigantic projects at best. Tannehill and Osweiler are 3rd ronders at best. Weeden would be a 2nd rounder were it not for his age. Cousins is a late 2nd rounder.

Why would you double down with rag tag, motley crew?

Doesn't compute.

Are you even a Dolphin fan? Do you watch the games? why do people have to try to pump up Matt Moore, he DIDNT GO 6-3, he WAS 6-6 and averaged about 190yrds a game against some of the weaker teams in the league. He showed some spark at carolina as well and was exposed as what he is... A BACK UP JOURNEY MAN QB.

If miami had the 20-25 pick in the draft he would be a great pick. so why not take him at 8, we have been doing this for years, not taking a guy because thier are others with higher value on the board, we will never get our QB this way.

Tanny should be the pick the kid has all the tools, great arm, athletic and most of all smart. he was pre med at A&M and has a great football mind. peole want to talk about him in big games? there was another collage QB who couldnt win big games, PEYTON MANNING couldnt beat florida (thier biggest rival) if his life depended on it...GO GET TANNY

A trade down scenario can open the way to pick Decastro in the first round plus Cousins and another valuable player at 2nd round (maybe Andre Branch, Bruce Irvin or Bobby Massie).

I would like this to happen. I'm resigned to watch Dolphins picking Tanehill at 8th, even Marino is backing him up, but I still dislike the idea.

I believe Ireland will sh** the bed no matter who he takes or where.....

if we trade down to say 14, the dallas pick i think tannehill would still be there. if they want him. 8 is too high for the kid.

they need the uniforms from the 70s to win

Jeff Ireland the horse trader!!! Cant believe this moron is running our draft again this year!!! YAAAAWN Im going back to sleep.

G --- IF Tannehill could start this season he would be worth taking at #8. BUT almost everyone says he isn't going to have a CHANCE of even playing until 2013 AT THE EARLIEST. #8 is way too high to draft a player to stay on your bench for a year.

Tannehill Noooooooooooooooooo... 14 interceptions last year, 55th pass efficiency in NCAA, 2 months ago he was a 2-3 round, are you kidding me? Potential, dreams, please noooooooooooooooo...

"G" the difference is manning was a QB in high school and all his years in college. tannehill was a QB for 15? games. not worth a n 8th pick. if we trade bad and pin up an extra pick the maybe take him.

Look for a trade with Dallas....Dallas needs a safety and the Dolphins pick up a draft pick or two and still select Tannehill at 14. Again....let me remind some of you that Shula never planned to select Marino or any other QB in the 83 draft....so relax and enjoy the days ahead!

P.S....Don't be surprised to see Bruce Irvin selected as a Dolphin.

I'm okay with taking Tannehill IF we trade down first. I am not taking Tannehill at #8 under ANY circumstances.

Odinseye, EVERY QB is a project. Why do you want to go with two rag tag, average QBs who will never, ever bring you to a SuperBowl??? It's one thing to believe you have the QB of the future and another thing to being happy to be average. Yes, double down because till we fix the QB, we will never be anything

Am i a Fan??? I was going to practices and games in the 70's...I bleed dolphin blood...Pump Moore up?? No...i just think he is better today than Tanny or Cousins, or any other option they may have...and Moore did NOT get the offseason to work with the Fins..so making it ALL CAPS and saying he is a BACK UP JOURNEY MAN...doesnt make it true..but you must know something that Real football people dont, since he is still there...Steve Young and Kurt Warner were considered back ups before getting put in the right systems for them..you have NO idea how good Moore can be in the WCO, nor do I...nor do we know how good Garrard can be..lets be real...he played for Jacksonville...not exactly a good team...and you somehow moronically compared Peyton Manning to Tanny...if that were a good comparison, then the Colts or Redskins would pass on Luck/RG3 for Tanny..and that wont happen...Tanny was valued at 5th round earlier in the year...media hype has elevated him..not his 19 starts...Peyton started as a Freshman..and was a dynamic high profile 4 year starter...never did he go play WR, because he couldnt keep his position...and you want to talk about WEAK games?? Go see how Tanny did last year against GOOD teams...lol...YOU go get Tanny...lol...am i a Fan...you better your ass i am...

Nationally, Tannehill ranked 55th in pass efficiency, one spot below Notre Dame's Tommy Rees, a guy who probably won't even keep his starting job this fall.

Take Tannehill. If he's a miss, we will be higher up in the draft order next year, and positioned to take a franchise type qb. If we take someone else, we're likely to be somewhat improved, but only enough to ensure we're out of the running, once again, on top level quarterbacks next year.

jaison, This kind of thinking is what has made the dolphins what they are today. we need to draft for the future. that being said i think Tanny would be playing for us by mid to late in THIS season. He played in a very complex (pro style)system at A&M, watch some film on his throws, go watch the gruden QB camp and see how smart he is. and the fact that he was succesful as a WR is only a plus, this will help him get on the same page with our WR's very quick.

Please DRAFT TANNY!

Olympia, why did the Fins pass on Flynn?? Flynn obviously had more upside then the two we have. Just cause Tanny played only 18 games and had some INTs or low passing percentage means squat if Sherman believes he has the tools to be a starter. And please don't talk about Warner. There is a huge difference between going to the playoffs year after year and bringing in a veteran who will give you ONE ring then nothing. Rather be the Colts or NE then the Rams.
