Miami Dolphins select Ryan Tannehill in first round

The Miami Dolphins have selected Ryan Tannehill with the No. 8 overall selection in the first round of the NFL draft.

Tannehill, a Texas A&M product, is the first quarterback the Dolphins select in the first round since 1983 when the team picked Dan Marino.

"It was awesome, it was everything I expected and more," Tannehill said on ESPN of the phone call he had with the team before the pick.

Tannehill is 6-3 and 224 pounds. He threw 29 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions in his 13 starts for the Aggies in 2012. There is an interesting statistic here: Aggies receivers dropped 70 passes this year.

As I have reported earlier, Dolphins owner Steve Ross did not push Jeff Ireland to pick Tannehill. The owner wanted a quarterback but did not demand this quarterback. I'm told Ireland decided Tannehill was his man over a week ago.

I do not expect the Dolphins to say that Tannehill will sit this season. But that is exactly what I expect will happen.

Wow you people call yourselves Dolphin fans. I am curious how many of you are NFL talent scouts, GM's, coaches, or if you have ever even played the game yourselves. So many people are absolutely sure that Tannehill is a bust and the guy hasn't even been to a practice yet. If he is brought along the right way he could very well be the future of our beloved franchise as he has all the tools and intelligence to be a very good qb. Yes he is going to be a project which is fine because I have no illusions that we are going to be any better than last year but that is why they call rebuilding because it takes time. I am not saying that he is the next Marino but none of us know right now whether this was a genius pick or a failure because only time will tell so lets take a deep breath, relax, and see what happens.

You guys are so clueless it's pathetic. Im calling out EVERYONE who is knocking the the pick of Tannehill.

Miami needed a Franchise QB. Tannehill is viewed universally as a player who needs time to develop but is 1st round talent. There is no such thing as a reach when you are convinced that a guy could be a franchise QB.

Matt Moore is what he is a stop gap. He can be the guy that starts this year while Tannehill LEARNS in the film room, LEARNS how to be a professional watching Garrard. He will LEARN how to prepare, LEARN how to read a defense and make the proper check downs.

Since when is LEARNING a bad thing when you have all the tools, athleticism and desire to succeed.

Stop hating he is the FUTURE and I LOVE IT!

A top 10 pick should be a starter, wasted pick!!!!

THE TANNEHILL PICK PROVES THAT THE FINS ARE STILL RE-BUILDING.

Why else pick someone that won't contribute this year?

Toss me a bone and pick Russell Wilson in the late rounds.

Get Janoris Jenkins or Fleener while your at it.

Could have been worse - we could have drafted another OL to add to the continuing carousel of lineman this team has had in the past 5 years.

The Dolphins have been in REBUILD MODE since Jeff THE SCOUT, Tuna and Soprano showed up. Not to mention all the other loser Head Coaches ever since Shula and marino Retired.

We will ALWAYS be in Rebuild mode when they continue to allow inexperienced people to occupy the GM's office and Owners Box.

With the pick of tennehill brings to light a very important clue which is that Coach Philbin feels that the team as is only needs his philosophy to make them into contenders. Philbin believes that he can make it work with what personal he has and whoever they pick later in the draft.

what a bunch of crybabies why dont you all just go hang your selves. He will be the dolphins starting QB in 2013 and then you will all eat your words because Tanihill will be a Top Tier QB you heard it here first

LOL at chris.

DC,

Yeah but technically isn't Weedon or Cousins a 50/50 chance to be much better than Tannehill based on better stats and production in college?

Tannehill 0- fer vs top 25 comp?

19 TDs and 15 Ints??? Is that Henne 2.0 waiting to happen?

You and Craig are right...you got what you wanted like Kris said.

Can you at least admit that you have not seen many (if any) Groomer picks in the top 10???

I love when people make opinions on draft picks when NO ONE knows whether they will work out or not.

I'm looking forward to us taking a WR, a pass rusher, & a RT in the 2nd & 3rd rounds.

I PREDICT IRELAND WILL MOVE UP AND PICK BLACKMON.....

BwaaaHaaaaHaaaaa!!

DC,

With 19 starts and his production aren't you, Ireland, Ross and others hitting the "potential" button kinda hard??

At #8 is what kills me...its not like this was pick 28.

ROB IN OC.........WHAT MAKE YOU THINK ,YOU KNOW TANNEHILL WILL NOT WORK FOR US ?

Ryan Tannehill is a good pick. Maybe a stretch @#8, but the Fins want to put fans in the seats. Fin fans can also be thankful Mike Sherman was nowhere near the Draftroom. If Sherman the GM was drafting, Tannehill would have been surpassed and Dolfans would be introduced to a new punter in the 1st round.

Man, have Teams made mistakes in this year's Draft! Unbelievable.

I am with POOP!!!!

These guys know how to develope a QB. These guys know him the best and wouldn't hang their coaching future on this guy if they didn't believe. Make no mistake about it they are tied to him.

WHO ELSE WERE THEY GONNA GET...ALL THE BEST PLAYERS WERE GONE..WE NEEDED A QB WITH UPSIDE...AND THAT A QB YOU GET IN THE FIRST ROUND!

I wish I could explain the HATE I feel for the Jets!!!

NY "G",

You make very valid points about our past since Shula was fired & Marino retired BUT I hope you're wrong going forward.

Let me get this right. Top ten pick gets top ten money which means you pay him more than the QB running the team.

If we win with Moore then you dont need him. If we suck then you would probably be in a position to pick one of three QB's who were rated higher than Tan this year.

Been to busy to read up, but a QB with a bad ankle and poor judgement does not a franchise QB make. This is terrible on so many levels. Has anyone looked at all the receivers New England has stocked up on. And we have a major whole in the D. Our only ture pass rusher is holding out and no one to put on the other side.

Ross has to be a Jets fan. I told my wife he couldn't run a toilet and she fired back that he is flushing your team pretty good.

Go Dolphins!! This sucks so far.

THSI KID WILL START FOR THE DOLPHINS THIS YEAR...ROSS WILL FORCE THE ISSUE FROM NOW ON...HE WILL NOT SIT WITH A CLIP BOARD...THE WCO IS LOW % OFFENSE WHEN IT COMES TO TURNOVERS IF DONE RIGHT. LETS SEE DAY 2 IF THEY CONTINUE TO LOAD UP ON OFFENSIVE WEAPONS, IF THE DO, THE KID WILL START AND WELL THIS YEAR.

Where the hell is Morris Claiborne? Maybe it's true what JJ said about intelligence.

Given our lackluster moves in free agency and now this reach of a pick , the fins are a team officially in transition....cancel those season tix for 2012!

YG WILL DIVORCE HIS WIFE BASED ON THAT PICK OF TANNEHILL,NOT DECASTRO ,,,,,,,,,

Bruce Irvin???? That's more of a reach than Tannehill??? Pete Carroll is a freak.

every team, except us, drafted a starter!

Yes I can Rob. This is a very unorthodox pick, I agree. That's why I CAN'T BELIEVE the guys that developed HOF QBs for years didn't give at least some assurances that they can work with him. And they are saying Matt Moore won't be the future, and they can't be in rebuild mode every year. This year is rebuild while Tannehill learns. Next year starts the rise to the top!

Even the announcers said, what a head scratcher of a pick. The Dolphins draft just to see how mad the fans can get, did you hear those boos Tannenhill? the girl with you sitting there sure did. Your table was the only one clapping. For sure I am in no way ordering the sunday ticket this year. We will be once again the laughing stock of the league. When will this ever end?

WE WILL OVE UP @ NO 3 AND PICK BLACKMON..........

BwaaaHaaaHaaaaHaaaaa!!

BwaaaHaaaHaaaaHaaaaHaaaHaaaaHaaaaa!!

Um.. Not picking on anyone here but if you think that Tannehill is going to fill seats at Sun Life or whatever they will call it you are mistaking badly.

What fills seats is coming to watch a team that can contend and WIN at home. The Dolphins are by far the worst team as long as i can remember since THE SCOUT, ROSS and Soprano and Tuna showed up, to have the best record at Home LOSING.

stop with this 19 starts crap, rogers only had 25

He better stop throwing interceptions in the 2nd half and figure out how to keep a drive alive in the 2nd half also or it's going to be Henne 2.0 all over again.
The only saving grace in this whole situation is Joe Philbin. If there's one guy who can turn this kid into something it's him.

I can see the Jets taking Mercilus, Upshaw, or Hightower here.

Well, I for one am excited that we have another 4-12, 5-11, 6-10 season!

Tannehill starts ONE season. Orchestrates a losing season. Gets the coaches al;l fired.

Buy hey, in his ONE season he manged to average a TD pass a game.

Too bad he almost averaged as many INTS.

But yeah, why not. Who cares that everynody else in the top 10 got immeadiate impact players?

Tannehill will master the scout team by seasons end.

It's all downhill from here folks. If this is the best thing he could come up with the 8th overall pick, I can't wait to see him waste the rest.

Anywhoo.......we got a guy that should be able to run our scout team by seasons end!

I love how all you posters seem to think you know better than an nfl gm, nfl coach and an nfl oc what this team needs. If you knew how to evaluate and pick nfl players then you would be in new york selecting the next players for your nfl team.... Oh yea..... You dont have a team your just fans that sit around and b###h about everything the dolphins coaches and front office does. If you dont like what direction they are trying to take this team then find another team to b###h about and dont let the fin hit you in the ass as you leave!!!!

if we wanted tannehill, why didnt we trade back for more picks??? no one else wanted him.

Rob in OC.....

You are speaking my language.....

Of course when his time comes....we will ALL want Tannehill to succeed...but with ONLY 19 starts...the ODDS are stacked against him....HEAVILY.....

Didn't this guy get Sherman fired?? The highlights they played would have all been picks in the NFL.

Again this Sucks!! Would have been better to keep Henne, and I never thought I would say that.

God why did my dad curse me with the love for this team.

Go Dolphins!! I guess.

I cannot believe the people on this blog consider themselves dolphin fans. Please if you hate the owner, front office, and players so much, go root for the patriots. i have been a fan since early 70's and will continue to be. i trust philbin and sherman on this pick as they have actually worked with and developed franchise qb's. if tannehill sits for a year or two and can become as good as aaron rodgers did working with philbin, i think we will all be happy, so give the new coaching staff a chance.

WE AREN'T GONNA WIN THE DIVISION..BRADY IS GONNA BE BRADY AGAIN..THE JETS WILL PROBALY WIN 8 THIS YEAR..THE BILLS ARE PROBALY GONNA WIN 8 OR 9..SO WE ARE GONNA PLAY TANNEHILL..IRELAND IS STILL HERE SO THAT LEAVES A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH...BUT COACH PHILBIN AND MIKE SHERMAN ARE HERE TO RELIEVE THE PAIN!

Shula71...

I was thinking the same thing on MOST of those highlights......

Well, Hightower is some kind of Beast.

Although I enjoy making sarcastic comments, I enjoy reading everyone else's sarcastic comments. This team could have drafted Andy Luck and some on this board still would have complained. haha.

Go Dolphins!!!

Rob in OC,

Long time buddy. I always like you opinion and well thought out post but I am far away on this one.

Look at the history of the NFL at QB bro. McNabb came from a option not spread option but flat out option system at Syracuse and was considered a reach to go in top 20 that year and he went 2 and by year 2 had them in the playoffs and the rest was history. Look at Steve McNair it took him 3 or 4 years to get on the field and he became a MVP and was a yard away from potentially winning a Super Bowl. Joe Flacco was considered a 2 to 3 year project from Delaware and he took Baltimore to the AFC championship as a rookie and the playoffs every year as a starter. Big Ben a project from the MAC and he went 11 to Pittsburgh and wasn't supposed to play until Maddox gets hurt and they go to AFC Championship as a rookie.

I like you and respect you but like many others I think its short sighted to dismiss him as a bad pick because he won't give you instant results and who are we to know that he won't?

The history of the NFL has shown us how much we all think we know including the "experts" which isn't a whole lot.

Hope the jets blow they're pick li we just did....

Right on target DC @9:18

ALL THESE HATERS AND NEGATIVE PEOPLE ARE JET ..BILLS AND PAT FANS..THERE LIFE IS TO BRING BAD VIBES AND NEGATIVE ENERGY TO THE DOLPHINS...

Plus Rob and others, if they chose one of your preferred picks (WR, OL, DL) it would STILL take a year plus to turn this thing around, because you're crazy if you think this team is doing anything with a .500 QB (which is what Matt Moore was last year). And they would keep pluggin, and keep the mediocre streak, until they found a QB.

So, what are we waiting for? For Andrew Luck to fall in our lap while sunbathing on the beach? That ain't happening. Not this year, next year, or the next. We HAD our chance to take a QB with the #1 pick and WE TOOK A LINEMAN! And 5 years later, where are we? 1 Playoff appearance and 1 winning Season. 5 years.

There WAS no other choice here!

Maybe the jets will pick a clip board holder with the 16th pick....

I already hate Coples....

16 pick the REX pick DE Copples..

I literally just took a big dump in my dolphins helmet and put it on. Thanks front office

Aloco,

This is the time of the year when you actually make a stand...on one side of ANY pick or the other...especially Miami's.

I can cheer the Fins when the season rolls around.

To more directly answer your question...My own eyes..NOT Irelands or Ross's or some random scouts...mine.

I trust my eyes to EASILY read his stats!!!

Mando posted em...that sizzles your bacon?? 19 TDs and 15 Ints?? NO Victories vs TOP 25 teams?

I could care less that he looks like Ivan Drago.

Today is the day to choose your side.

I will mark you down as for the pick and I will be against the pick.

And still a Fin fan to every last atom in my body AndyNJ, Scott W and a host of others.

Nope...the jets just helped solidify that defence....

BART SCOTT will not allow Coples to slack.....

Odenseye,

Love how you think you actually know what you are talking about. The defense got everyone fired choking away 5 4th quarter leads. Not to mention Tannehill's receivers dropped 53 passes. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of your rant. This guy is garbage lmao

Anyone want to help paint my taint aqua.

Coples to the Jets!

Instead of him chasing Brady as a Fin, he'll be chasing Moore and Tannehill in the future.

That sucks!
