Miami Dolphins select Ryan Tannehill in first round

The Miami Dolphins have selected Ryan Tannehill with the No. 8 overall selection in the first round of the NFL draft.

Tannehill, a Texas A&M product, is the first quarterback the Dolphins select in the first round since 1983 when the team picked Dan Marino.

"It was awesome, it was everything I expected and more," Tannehill said on ESPN of the phone call he had with the team before the pick.

Tannehill is 6-3 and 224 pounds. He threw 29 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions in his 13 starts for the Aggies in 2012. There is an interesting statistic here: Aggies receivers dropped 70 passes this year.

As I have reported earlier, Dolphins owner Steve Ross did not push Jeff Ireland to pick Tannehill. The owner wanted a quarterback but did not demand this quarterback. I'm told Ireland decided Tannehill was his man over a week ago.

I do not expect the Dolphins to say that Tannehill will sit this season. But that is exactly what I expect will happen.

Just by selecting Tannehill, Ireland has made his career.

Ingram still on the board, so is DeCastro...That's friggin good value for the next 10 teams on the clock...Wow...

Boom or bust pick right there. Kind of happy we didn't take Coples.

Hard to believe Ingram is still om the board....

The dolphins totally suck. I hate this pick. What a blown opportunity. Oh well another crappy season. Yeah dolphins.

Watch, the jets are pick an hour later than us.

Watch them come up with a playmaker!

ANDY,

You are the clueless one bro. You don't squander a TOP 8 PICK ON A PIPE DREAM. iN ADDITION TO ALL OF tANNE'S other short comings, he managed 19 TD's and 15 ints. over his ENTIRE college career.

Who says he's a 1st round talent? Some talking Homer Heads.

Tell me this then, how many QB's were ever taken in the 1st round after only managing 19 TD's?

I'll tell you, NONE! Ireland is the only retarded enough person to spend the 8th overall pick on a guy that had a grand totaL of 19 TD's.

ps

Just in the time it took to post this, the jets got Coples. He'll start and contribute this year.

Such an awful pick. We could have picked up someone who could be a starter from day 1. Nope.. we picked someone who has too many ??? marks to be taken that high.. sish..

Think you are upset? Talk to a Seahawks fan. Tannehill was a consensus top 12 pick - everyone agreed overrated AND everyone agrees that the upside pushed him higher.

Now Bruce Irvin - speechless about a mid-3d rounder going 15.

FUNNY HOW THE BILLS AND JETS ...DRAFT DEFENSIVE PLAYERS AFTER WE TAKE TANNEHILL?

Dear Mr. Coples - may you contract scabies or something you filthy NY Jerk.

The Cowboys have BIG BALLS as they move up from 14 to the 6 to get what they need. The Dolphins lack balls and pick who the pundits and media and ESPN want the Dolphins to pick.

Well, the Bills get an outstanding cornerback, the Jets get an elite pass rusher and the Dolphins get a clipboard holder who may be a clipboard holder his entire career. That is, if he doesn't go all Ryan Leaf in the locker room.

OK guys now we have our own franchise QB (prospect) for either good or evil. B**ch everything you want today, because from tomorrow on we will wish the best for him and the Dolphins. We should give him the warmest and most reassuring welcome so he can focus on his development without any worries, feeling motivated to correspond to our hopes.

He will also need a great o-line and a good selection of reliable possession receivers to have a real chance in the NFL. Let's hope Ireland succesfully satisfies those needs with solid choices to be made tomorrow and saturday.

Jon you are so smart. I want you. I need you.

1. Need a trading partner to trade down with
2. Willing to bet most of the haters wanted Brady Quinn
3. Sherman knows quaterbacks, as does Philbin

Odin,

You're talking about a player who tanked his Senior year. Yes he's got a ton of talent. Reminds me of Merling.

WHAT BUNCH OF BABIES WE HAVE FOR DOLPHINS FANS, AS I REMEMBER DAN MARINO HAD A AWFUL SENIOR YEAR A PITT AND BECAME OF HIM. TANNY HAS PHYSICAL SKILLS THE EVEN LUCK DOSENT HAVE

Remember all the Packer fans pissed off because they picked that scrub Aaron Rodgers over a starter that could help the team from day one? Just sayin'

Watch New England end up with Ingram or DeCastro...

I already like him better than the last QB that we drafted......Pat White!

I really hope that Miami has a winning season this year. Not just because I'm a FAN of the Fins, but because maybe all of you Whinners will go someplace else to spread all of your negative garbage! That's why everyone thinks that Miami fans are the WORST fans in the NFL....because of all of you! Either support the team, or go find one that you can support! At least have enough class to do that! Wait a minute...what am I saying? Sorry, I forgot who I was talking to...

2nd Kevin Zeitler RG Wisconsin
3rd Mohamed Sanu WR Rutgers
3rd Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnati
4th Orson Charles TE Georgia
5th Tank Carder ILB TCU
6th Matt Reynolds OT BYU
7th Philip Thomas FS Syracuse

Jon,
You need to get your facts straight about Tannehill. He threw 3 int's in 3 games last year including in the Oklahoma St. game where they were up 20-3 and he threw 2 int's in the 2nd half, one on the last drive to seal the loss.
They were beating Arkansas and lost the lead in the 2nd because Tannehill couldn't score more than 3 pts in the 2nd half.
The were beating Missouri and Tannehill couldn't lead his team down the field in the 2nd half for more than 3 pts.
Also, he threw 10 td's and 9 int's in the 2nd half of games/ot. He sucks in the 2nd half. He can't lead his team down the field to score just like Henne wasn't able to do it either. 3 and outs. Philbin's a quarterback guru but he's going to need a shaman to help him with this one.

odinseye you are very astute. You should forward your contact info to Mr. Ross. I'm sure he would hire you. If it doesn't work out you can always go back to sticking nickles up my hole. I will pay you this time in pubes.

I wonder how much time Ross will give Ireland to make his Fins a winner?

Will he fire him this year if they have another losing season?

or

Will he fire him after a losing season in 2013 with Tannehill??

Hahahahahahaha Jets picked Vernon Ghoulston no 2.
Love the Dolphins pick, finally a conviction and a talented QB to develope and build on. All you crybaby fans will be cheering this kids name when he starts winning games, think about it, Sherman knows him inside and out, Philbin knows how to develope QB's, he's already used to the Dolphins offense, this is a no brainer but most of you are too stupid to see that.
Seriously who was available who would make this team win this year. Tannehill could make this team a winner for years to come.
And IF he does bust, so what, at least we took a chance finally.
Great move for the Fins, now lets go get some receivers!!!

OSCAR "SKUNK TROLL" CANOSA'S AT IT AGAIN. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHEN HE TROLLS ME. THAT MEANS HE'S LEAVING THE REST OF YOU ALONE.

BOY IS THAT OSCAR "SKUNK TROLL" CANOSA STUPID. NOW I FULLY UNDERSTAND WHY HE'S IN THE WORLD. HIS PARENTS ARE STUPID TOO. LOL

ESPN EAD.

Hydrashock,

You basically summed it up as nobody is going to be happy unless they feel their guy is drafted. As much as I hate Tennehill at the #8 spot when all is said and done I will be supporting the NEW HC Philbin and give him and his staff the normal first year honeymoon but If i don't see any upside I will be disappointed... again.

As far as THE SCOUT Ireland goes.. I want that lire fired as soon as possible. Bring in a real proven experienced GM and his last name is Polian.

Who can be excited about this pick...

I am the BIGGEST Proponent of of the 1ST RD QB......I kinda want to take credit for the MOB LIKE mentality for the 1st rd QB...I gave you STATS...Percentages....and ODD of with the SB with one of the 1st ROUNDERS.....

But my words were taken OUT OF CONTEXT.....you have to draft a TRUE 1st RD talent.....you don't just draft a ANY QB in the 1st rd..and think all your HOLES are magically filled....

B33 - I like that Orson Charles pick.

It took Chad Tanne 4 years at Texas A&M to throw 19 total TD's.

I bet it will take him longer to throw that many in the NFL.

Oh well, we might be able to get a 6th or seventh rounder for him in a few years.

Probably not though.

I really just hope this works out, tired of wearing orange and aqua and being a target by fair weather Jets and Pat fans.

The Pats have the 27 and 31 pick.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MIAMI FAN AND A JETS FAN, NOT MUCH FROM
WHAT IM READING TODAY. MAN UP AND GET READY FOR THE WCO MAKING A BIG
DIFFERENCE IN MIAMI'S GAME PLANING AND QB DEVELOPMENT

I think the Tannehill pick is God telling me I've been a Dolphin fan for far to long. LOL

Horrible pick for Coples. Imo that's the worst possible team he could have gone too. They already have trouble finishing, have a bunch of guys who take plays off and are selfish. Rex is a blowhard blabber mouth who cant back up his nonsense. And they pick a guy who needs discipline, on the most undisciplined team in the nfl. HUGE bust potential there. Pats or Pack would have been best for him.

Ingram to the Chargers...

Under what rock did all these negative idiots come from?

If Sherman is willing to vouch for this guy as top 10 pick now why did he have so little faith in his prospects two years ago...he demoted him to receiver. What kind of weak character is this guy made of that he is willing to accept this move to receiver? If someone loses out in a QB battle they battle as a backup to become the starter again or transfer to where one can start. Can Armando or anyone of the rest of the Dolphin apologists help rationalize that?

Good night all...My kids get up way too early in the morning...LOL!!!

Kris @9:51 pm,

I felt the exact same way about not selecting Brady Quinn. But had no idea Cam-moron was going to select the Ted Ginn family instead. LOL

@Shula71

Mike Sherman can get fired on his own without the help of players. His drafts as GM were awful. There's a reason he was out of the NFL for a while. Just ask any Packer fan how they feel about B.J Sander. His defenses brought him the nickname "Charmin" as they were known to be soft and gentle.

As an offensive guy, he was a good coach. Not much of a motivator. Regardless of his relationship with Tannehill at Texas A&M, seriously, Dolfans should be extatic he's just OC and not GM. Hopefully, he's no where to be seen in Miami's while the draft is happening. If I'm GM, I put an alert to security if Sherman is within 50 yards of the facility, they kindly escort him to the city limits.

AndyNJ and DC,

I hear what you guys are saying...and I respect your opinions.

I simply feel a complete 180 degrees on this player and time will tell.

Now it's very hard to type and load my bullets so...

Cheers,

gotta get some weapons for Tannehill...

There is a run on D Players now. Good. What you think, YG?

John Clayton spewing off about they HAD to take Tannehill to "apease" the fans. That is they didn't take him fans would "riot". Basicall that we took him because the fans demanded it. Well that's crap. Lots of fans are demanding a QB. Everyone obviously wants a great QB. If they were going to take a QB to just "satisfy" the fans they would have just drafted one of the 3rd round guys. Talked him up and most people would have accepted it.

Odinseye put down the stats charts. Tannehill only played a little under 2 years at qb, not 4.

Odin,

When did Tannehill have 19 TDS? You need to research and know what you are talking about because I always know what I am talking about before I speak on something.

Tannehill's had 33 total TDS. 29 passing TDs and 4 Rushing TDs.

He didn't have a losing record they were 6-6 and won their bowl game.

He played the balls off RG3 with a 6TD game vs Baylor a ranked team. And was the best player on the field that day!

So don't ever call me out until you know what your talking about. Clown!

we coulda traded down and still got tanne. ireland is an idiot.

I find dolphins fan hilarious. This kid hasn't even thrown an nfl pass or taken a snap but all the arm chair qb's are calling him a bust. Did Miami have bigger needs?. No way. We have gone through 16 qb's since the legend Marino and it was time to gamble even though I also believe tannehill at 8 is a reach. Most qb's are reaches unless it's a luck or manning. Keep in mind guys if this kid becomes half of what Marino was or say a Brees or Rodgers, how many fans will hate this pick. Let's give the coaches philbin and Sherman benefit of the doubt. Philbin groomed Rodgers and Flynn. Sherman had a little to do with favre's success in the latter of his career. these guys know their craft. Surround tannehill with talent and coaching and I think we have our franchise qb

Phil | April 26, 2012 at 09:56 PM

I can sum it up in two words.... SUCKER PICK.

Selecting Tannehill we basically have put our #1 pick on the shelf for 2yrs with still no guarantee we just reselecting a faster version of Chad Henne.

YG....all I say is LOL.....

I have to pray that a few years from now...DC and others making me eat my words.....

but I have a feeling that will NOT be the case.....

Really, dude? Are you serious?

SHERMAN HAS PROPOSED USING TANNEHILL LIKE HE DID AT TEXAS A&M.

Use him as a WR in 2012 (sitting in WR and QB meetings) then QB in 2013.

Phins lost 7 starters to free agency and picked the 1 gut in the first round that won't start.
Sheeesh

Jeff Fuller WR in the 6th rd would be a steal.

This draft doesn't have the talent that last year's had IMO. Lots of players with question marks which is why I wanted Kuechly but is there REALLY a Dolphin fan who can argue with taking a QB who was coached in college by his OC??? Of course there is b/c some of you know better than NFL scouts. However, there's no one in the NFL who knows Tannehill better than Sherman.

WORST PICK EVER!!! PERIOD!!!!!

Professor Lou | April 26, 2012 at 09:49 PM

Awesome facts! Love the last line about the Shaman.

Cheers,

The Pats moved UP to 21... Look out as ANOTHER Team HAS A SET OF BALLS unlike the Dolphins.
