Miami WRs still a big question mark

The NFL is a passing league. The New England Patriots -- with a relatively weak running game and a flawed defense -- have proven that for years. The New York Giants, meanwhile, have been able to overcome the Patriots in two Super Bowls because they could both pass and attack the passer.

So championships revolve around the pass.

The Dolphins obviously recognize this because they have finally, finally invested a first-round draft pick on a quarterback -- this in quarterback Ryan Tannehill. And while there are questions whether Tannehill will succeed or not, I know this:

Tannehill will need great wide receivers to become a great quarterback. There is zero doubt about that. There can be zero argument about that.

I know that many of you contend the Green Bay Packers, for example, have a great passing game because of their quarterback and offensive system while diminishing the importance of Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver and James Jones.

Wrong.

Great quarterbacks do not ever do it on their own. to the heights they can otherwise Even the Pats realized this when a mediocre group of receivers got them to the AFC title game in 2006 but the addition of Wes Welker and Randy Moss made them unbeatable in the 2007 regular season and undefeated through 18 games until the Super Bowl.

See the difference? Even with a HOF quarterback, great receivers are a huge upgrade.

That's why I believe the Dolphins must now upgrade the receiver corps. Yes, the club drafted B.J. Cunningham and Rishard Matthews on the draft's third day. And there are reports the Dolphins will sign Texas A&M WR Jeff Fuller and Penn State WR Derek Moye as undrafted free agents.

But all four are developmental players. And the problem is a majority of Miami's current receivers are still developmental players -- including Marlon Moore, Clyde Gates, Roberto Wallace and others.

Frankly, I look at Miami receivers and see a lot of question marks. Maybe they turn to exclamation points. But I don't see Miami's passing game taking off unless and until they do or unless and until the front office upgrades with better players.

Armando Salguero fills out application with Salvation Army to write for Herald. Then sleep all day.

ALoco,

I will fill out application with Salvation Army. Then I will sleep like Armando all day.

Spaz had no perception of talent that wasn't ordained by Bill the Bonsai. And as far as this article is concerned; regardless of talent, if the QB and WRs are not acting as a unit success will be a struggle. This requires work. More work than there is time for in practice. Seldom can you just put talent on the field and it turn into what the Pats have with Brady. I would bet that Brady requires his receivers to do a lot of extra ( study, preparation, route work, etc.).

ALoco,

Cybil Canosa has many, many, many6, many, many, many people follow him to upstairs basement above his neck.

Think about this. Reggie Bush and Lamar Miller in the same backfield. Both are a threat to run the ball but they could also swing Bush out to either side for a screen. Or, they could do that and, instead, hand the ball off to Miller.
You have Clay and Egnew on the line along with Hartline. This could turn out to be a nightmare for some DC's. How do you play that? Or, you can have Cunningham or Fuller in there in place of Clay. Both can run the slant. Then again, so can Egnew. You would have so much versatility with a lineup like that.
If Philbin can develop these guys like they develop guys in Green Bay this could be one exciting offense to watch.
I can't wait for preseason.

They can even line up Bush as a receiver with Miller in the backfield. I think this is going to be fun.

Prof Lou,

I play that very easy. I all out blitz, force either Bush and Smith to become pass protectors or the TE's.

As a dc you show me Smith and Bush in backfield I know you want to pass. Neither are run blockers. I'll force your qb to throw short to one of TE's because with my blitz he wont have time to throw deep.

If 2rb's and 2 TE's are int the game That means you have only one legit wr in the game. My #1 corner will man up on him. At best you complete a short pass.

Prof Lou,

You cant run any pass plays with Miller in the backfield. Right now he's a poor pass protector. Defense will blitz to force this weakness. Lamar Miller will have to greatly improve his pass protect to be a lone rb in the backfield. Philbin doesnt want to get his qb killed.

When the defense blitz the rb has to stay in to pas protect.

Guys guys guys WTF!!! These players haven't line up in a pro football game!! Let football nature take it's course!! WE DON'T KNOW C R A P!!! Some of these GM DON'T KNOW C R A P. THEY MAKE BIG TIME MISTAKE!! Let it play out you bunch of genius!!

Jake Long is over the hill....Our Guards are not a good fit in the WCO....Jonathan Martin is not strong enough to be a RT....Our WR's are too slow...Dansby is overpaid....Tannehill is not a franchise QB.....Blah, blah, blah.

Way too many whiny beotches on here. I believe this will turn out to be a very good draft & I believe we're headed in the right direction with a HC that knows how to run an offense.

Aloco glad to see you're still around. Here's a list of "pizza boys" who have played in the NFL.
Dan Marino
Nick Buoniconti
Joe Montana
Ted Bruschi
Vinny Testaverde
Mark Bavaro
Joe Flacco
Franco Harris
Larry Izzo
Anthony Fasano
Vincent Papale
Tony Siragusa
Adam Vinatieri
Jason Fabini
Tony Boselli
AND VINCE LOMBARDI who was also a "meatball" coach according to you.

What have you accomplished?

You cant run any pass plays with Miller in the backfield. Right now he's a poor pass protector. Defense will blitz to force this weakness. Lamar Miller will have to greatly improve his pass protect to be a lone rb in the backfield. Philbin doesnt want to get his qb killed.

When the defense blitz the rb has to stay in to pas protect.

YG,

I get what you are saying but isn't that what coaches are there for??? Yes I'm aware that very few players improved under Sparano in 4 years but I believe that will change b/c I believe Philbin is a coach & not just somebody who hopes things work out. They may not become great blockers but I'm pretty confident that both Miller & Thomas will learn how to chip.

A great QB makes great WR

WHDP,

Pro Lou just posted he would do that now. I just letting know with Miller as the only rb in the backfield dc's will blitz to force him to stay in as a pass protector. If he cant protect the qb is toast.

He has to pick up a blitzer. Remember, dc read the scouting report too. Before Philbin allows Miller to be a lone rb, he will have to prove he can protect against a blitzer.

If a 2nd blocking back is back there too, then he can go out for a pass.

You dont have to be a great wr in today's nfl. The wr just has to be a match for your offensive scheme then be great at executing it.

I believe with Sparano we had a piss poor offensive scheme for wr's and needed great wr's to truly be effective.

I believe with Philbin coming from GB, we now have a legit passing system that's greater than Sparano's wing and a prayer philosophy.

In Sparano's passing system we probably did need 3 1st rd wr's. because he didnt have a real modern day system.

Case in point:

Ocho Cinco was a great wr, but in New England he coud hardly get on the playing field. He wasnt a fit nor could he ever really learn the system.

We'll have a real wr system in MIami now. You guys just wait and see.

Philbin will school Sherman on the new nuances of the wc passing attack that has developed since he was Texas A&M.

Im sure there have been suttle changes to the wco since Sherman's been away.

Armando writes crappy article about the wr's brought in because he doesnt understand Philbin will bring in a modern day wr and passing system. Not sandlot offensive of Sparano.

Whomever is monitoring this blog;
You deleted two of my posts, the last of which contained no curse words. But it's okay for someone to print Wop on the last page? Just curious, can we use deragatory terms about every race or just the one's that don't directly offend your employees?

This is typical Miami Dolphin fans right here.

"Love the moves Jeff .. Good value rounds 1- 5, especially the Lamar miller pick.. I dam nearly fell out of my chair in excitement ... How about Vernon Oliver !? Love it!! Homegrown players ,thats what people want to see .. Now!! Let's put it into action and see what we got .."

OKAY, WHO THE HELL IS VERNON OLIVER AND WHO DRAFTED HIM?

Ocho dumb as hell.

I have to disagree Martin is not strong enough. He's just not smart enough for the WCO. But dude is buck strong.

With Sparano nearly every pattern our individual wr's were same patterns. If they didnt get lucky to beat defenders, defenders just laid in wait.

We had sandlot passing game. Philbin from GB will bring modern day nfl passing game.

Tannehill will become modern day nfl qb with Philbin from GB. He will not hold beer in one hand and pass with other.

The following departees have been replaced in this draft: Chad Henne, Brandon Marshall, Columbus, Carey, Merling, Langford, Taylor, Bell.

The dead wood has been cleared from the roster.

Philbin-Tannehill have no excuse whatsoever to not be a competitive, winning team from day 1.

Pat White rhrows ball with beer in two hands from Sparano cold cooler. Get drunk and cry like wolf in practice.

With Sparano db's only learn to catch Miller time in practice. Football no look like taste great nor less filling.

We finally have a Franchise QB.
Teams with franchise QB's consistently move deep into the playoffs and win Super Bowls.
Just look at all that the follwing franchise QB's have accomplished:
Phillip Rivers
Tony Romo
Jay Cutler
Matt Ryan
Matt Stafford
Matt Schaub

Tannehill will soon be accomplishing all that these others have.

Mando you do not need to wriote about our need for a franchise QB anymore.
Now you can write about something else.

Armando very kind to homeless at Salvation Army. He teach them to fill out application at Salvation Army to write for Herald.

But regarding the Wildcat, he [Philbin] said, “Don’t know if we’re gonna turn into a Wildcat team.”

LOL!!! How does he not know? Some scheme you got there Joe.

I own a donut shop. I don't know if I will start selling cars tomorrow.

Matt Ryan at GB would beat Rodgers at ATL. ATL has sandlot passing attack like Tony Sparano.

Philbin in GB learn real professional football. Philbin in GB not learn sandlot wildcat. In GB Philbin save wildcat for local zoo.

Philbin from GB even look professional when he dress. Sparano dress like picking up pizza after sandlot practice.

Philbin from GB give franchise professional face at draft. At draft Sparano look like hitched a ride from Salvation Army. Jeff turn away nose like Sparano missed shower.

Martin not smart enough? That is by far the most ignorant statement yet... 3gen at Harvaard n he graduated Stanford in 3.5 years

Sprano lose 25lbs when take one shower. Sparano get dirt at sandlot practice.

Philbin from GB look professional at draft. Philbin at draft make dolfans proud. Sparano make homeless at Salvation Army rinse cycle laundry.

He also played in wco in Stanford

NYJets now have sandlot offense to match sandlot defense. Jet players happy, beer and pizza at practice.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post gave Miami a grade of B+....Buffalo a grade of B+.....New Jersey Jets a grade of C+ and the Patriots a grade of B...Just don't let them talk you down, for Miami we did good. Bill

Phins78 is campaiging to be the blog drama queen. He's got my vote.

Philbin from GB give dolfans firts professional practice post Shula. Make sure to pay attention.
