Miami WRs still a big question mark

The NFL is a passing league. The New England Patriots -- with a relatively weak running game and a flawed defense -- have proven that for years. The New York Giants, meanwhile, have been able to overcome the Patriots in two Super Bowls because they could both pass and attack the passer.

So championships revolve around the pass.

The Dolphins obviously recognize this because they have finally, finally invested a first-round draft pick on a quarterback -- this in quarterback Ryan Tannehill. And while there are questions whether Tannehill will succeed or not, I know this:

Tannehill will need great wide receivers to become a great quarterback. There is zero doubt about that. There can be zero argument about that.

I know that many of you contend the Green Bay Packers, for example, have a great passing game because of their quarterback and offensive system while diminishing the importance of Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver and James Jones.

Wrong.

Great quarterbacks do not ever do it on their own. to the heights they can otherwise Even the Pats realized this when a mediocre group of receivers got them to the AFC title game in 2006 but the addition of Wes Welker and Randy Moss made them unbeatable in the 2007 regular season and undefeated through 18 games until the Super Bowl.

See the difference? Even with a HOF quarterback, great receivers are a huge upgrade.

That's why I believe the Dolphins must now upgrade the receiver corps. Yes, the club drafted B.J. Cunningham and Rishard Matthews on the draft's third day. And there are reports the Dolphins will sign Texas A&M WR Jeff Fuller and Penn State WR Derek Moye as undrafted free agents.

But all four are developmental players. And the problem is a majority of Miami's current receivers are still developmental players -- including Marlon Moore, Clyde Gates, Roberto Wallace and others.

Frankly, I look at Miami receivers and see a lot of question marks. Maybe they turn to exclamation points. But I don't see Miami's passing game taking off unless and until they do or unless and until the front office upgrades with better players.

i always get a little optimistic at this time of the year and it usually turns out that i am wrong, but i really think this time it will be different. it really made me scratch my head when ireland traded up to get that undersized runningback from the U, since miami has no power running game, but alas, ireland picks up JONAS GRAY after all was said and done. it took a day or two to digest what we accomplished in the draft, and my final opinion is now one of closure, curiosity, and mild excitement, and i believe a huge factor in how good we are this year will be daniel thomas. everything else looks pretty good, the defense might see a small drop in play, but it all hinges on the short yardage game.

YG..What are the criteria for coaches who develop quarterbacks? Are they just the OC, or the HC? The reason I ask is that You made the point that Tannyhill is going to the most quarterback friendly system..as far as developing a QB..I'm trying to wrap my head around why Shannahan is eliminated for this group, and Sherman, and Philbin get the props...

If your crieria says the coach was on board at anytime during a quarterbacks reign with a team, then surely Shannahan must be included. If the criteria is the coach is soley responisible from a coordinators position, the Sherman must be eliminated. If it is from a position of Head coach..Then Philbin must be eliminated..Shanahan is the only one of the three that has won super bowls as both a coordinator, and HC with 2 seprate teams.

I feel good!

Heaven is a fairytale. Part of the entire big lie called organized religion that exists only because people are terrified of death and can't mentally cope with the idea of finality.

It is all nonsense.

Again, we will all die and be very quickly forgotten. Nobody here is leading a remarkable life that future generations will recall.

It is the truth.

the MIAMI dolPHILBINS will show improovement at QB, tightend, recievers, running game, offensive line, we will put up more numbers on the score board this year, i see JONAS GRAY as the dark horse, i hope he has healed up. the font seven on defense will be about even, the drop off will be in the secondary, i hope reshad jones steps it up right away, but i think he needs more time to develop, and don't forget we have a new defensive coordinator with a new scheme, yerimiah bell will be missed for a while. BUT, philbin is a developer, he uses words like tempo, he realizes that players need to play with passion, he seems to see the same things some of us fans notice, this is all very incouraging. as for CRAIG M., i don't believe the QB makes the reciever, it's 60/40. my example would be CULPEPPER to MOSS, dante used to just hang the ball up there and MOSS would go get it.

It is a Man's World!, JB said. Broder, how wrong was he!

..My point being that we wouldn't give Shanahan the credit for Steve Youngs success as a Super Bowl winner. So we can't give Sherman the glory for the success of Farve..Both players were established players. The difference, Shanahan actually helped Young win his Title..(he was the OC in 94)...If you look at Shermans resume..Who has he developed?? Jon Kitna? Steven Mcgee? The answer is nobody. Nobody that anyone can name..

Now if you want to throw in Farve in his column, fine. But that is certainly a reach..and you would have to give Shanny, Young if this was the case.

As far as Philbin goes..His similarities to Shannahan are similar..Both were coordinators at the start of the careers of great quarterbacks..Elway-Rodgers..Both missed out on year 1 of both mens careers, only to become OC'S in year 2..Both took Head coaching roles in after the 5th year of OC duty. Both teams went to the Super Bowl in that time..One man twice, the other once..Philbins team got the win..

The similarities between Shanny, and Philbin are much closer then most would think..Hopefully Philbin has more success as the first time HC..

I am having Dreams of Bush and Miller lining up in the backfield on third and short. That's frank Abuse, People.

There is no Question Mark about our wide receivers. We have answers, not questions. The answers are that we had the best receiver in the league, and we gave him away for basically nothing. We have 2 slow starters and a bunch of others who have had plenty of time to make their mark on the team, and failed. Roberto Wallace for example seems like he's been on the team for 13 years, and he still hasn't made an impact.

You're kidding, right?

Look, I'm sure you're a swell guy and meant well---maybe even thought that was clever and/or funny---but as a 40-year Dolphins fan and someone who doesn't like to see others make foolish decisions that lead to public scorn and derision, may I respectfully ask that you NEVER, EVER again use the term 'DolPHILBINS?'

Thank you.

Our WRS corps SUCKS, no talent corps thanks to Jeff Idiotland and he´s dumb-a-s-s trades... so we´re done about passing game 1 more year

Add Voice of Reason to the Crow Feeders.

I'd give them a B+ this draft. The Coach should know what this QB brings to the team. They drafted the right Positions, but who knows if it was the right guys. I would have taken Weeden but I watched him play. Lot's of Okie players from Texas are in the NFL. Blackmon and Henne look out they might be in the Pro bowl next year.

Regginald Bush lined up as receiver, Bess in the slot, with double TE sets and Miller in the back field.

Is this the reason for no "#1 receiver"?

THE DOLPHINS ARE STILL IN THE CELLAR..........

TANNEHILL WILL BE GREAR B/C OF TWO PEOPLE BETTING ON HIM ,HIS EX COACH SHERMAN AND THE NEW CORN BEEF HC ..

UNTIL THEN ,LET'S NOT OVER THE STATE THE FACT WE R NOT GOOD AS A TEAM .........

THE CELLAR //////////

WILL BE GREAT

OSCAR......DO YOU HAVE A BABY PIG AT HOME AS A PET ?

It's interesting that you bring up the Patriots as "proof" that a great quarterback needs great wide receivers in order to be successful.

You said, "Great quarterbacks do not ever do it on their own. to the heights they can otherwise Even the Pats realized this when a mediocre group of receivers got them to the AFC title game in 2006 but the addition of Wes Welker and Randy Moss made them unbeatable in the 2007 regular season and undefeated through 18 games until the Super Bowl."

But you didn't mention that New England won 3 championships without Moss or Welker, and didn't win any while they had both.

Great receivers help, but they are not a guarantee.

This TE from Missouri we drafted in the 3rd seems to be the real deal.

...I know you never know until they start competing against NFL level talent at NFL speed but IF Michel Egnew is, in fact a consistent playmaker at TE -- how is that any different from adding a legitimate threat at WR?

Add Aloco to the Crow Feeders. And he really is one of those that will admit he overfed, as he cannot change his nick. We thorougly enjoy for Crowfeeders to eat a lot.

Don't pay any attention to all these nay-sayers here, deep down they are fierce Dolfans. Their only difference from Us is that they are getting Paid to write all that Bullcrap, and we arent so.

Right?

Armando,

The New England Patriots have two excellent tight ends. Their WR are pedestrian at best. What great WR does New Orleans have? They have good, solid receivers. NOT great. Green Bay has solid receivers, not one is ever mentioned as a top receiver in the NFL. Please, think before you write. The common denominator in ALL these teams are Great QB, excellent Tight Ends and solid (NOT GREAT) wide receivers. (NO PRIMADONAS LIKE BRANDON MARSHALL)

We don't have a #1 WR? Neither does GB.

Now they are joking because they are getting squashed against a wall. This in Internet 102, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Armando,

FYI, The New England Patriots won THREE Super Bowls with pedestrian receivers. Once they added Randy Moss and Wes Welker they have won NONE. Please, do some research before you write your blog.

Having said all this, Other than Brian Hartline, Devon Bess, Ledanu Neenee and Fasano we have no experience at the position. Hoping that the youngsters come along is dangerous in the NFL. I do agree that we have to continue to upgrade the position.

I was very impressed with the Dolphins draft. First draft I have been happy with since JJ was here. Good job Ireland. Never thought I would say that. Maybe you do have some balls after all. I need a new handle then, any suggestions?

NO Balls,

Some Acorns?

How many times are we to repeat this?. You cannot profit from anything written for Internet for it is World's Patrimony. Not even Mel Kiper can do it.

In fact I am so happy with Ireland's draft, I think we should send him a present. What do you guys think? I was thinking of knee-pads. Any one else have any suggestions?

Ryan Tannehill becomes Jeff Ireland's last best chance25By Dan Hanzus NFL.com

If Ryan Tannehill works out for the Miami Dolphins, the franchise's interminable search for a successor to Dan Marino will finally come to an end. If Tannehill doesn't, the team is likely doomed to NFL purgatory for the next few years and perhaps beyond.

Jeff Ireland ... this is your life. Or at least football life with the Dolphins.

Unlock HQ Video HQ video delivered by Akamai
Ireland, the team's much-maligned general manager, needs to hit on Tannehill. For what it's worth, Ireland is completely sold on the former Aggies quarterback and has been for some time.

"I got enamored last August," he told SI.com's Peter King.

If Tannehill gets rope from fans in terms of the typical rookie learning curve, Ireland will be lucky if he gets a string. The GM is public enemy No. 1 in South Florida. Defending himself has, oddly, become part of his gig.

"It's a little strange," said the man who's so disliked that fans staged a "Fire-land" protest outside his office last month. "It is what it is. I love the fact that the fans are passionate, and they want what I want -- to win. I believe what I do. I have a strong conviction in what I'm doing. I'm a meat-and-potatoes football guy, and I can handle the heat."

Ireland said there's no plan when Tannehill is going to play, at least not yet. He pointed out to the practice fields from his office and told King, "Out there is where we're going to find out about Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore and David Garrard."

It's proper GM speak, but make no mistake: If Tannehill doesn't play well -- and doesn't play soon -- it likely spells doom for Ireland.

No pressure though.

Let's be realistic. They are building this roster for the future, not for this year. They are not expecting to compete this season -- that much is clear.

Trying to compare our wr's to GB's is funny. They have multiple good wr's and a great wr in Jennings. We will field a few avg wr's and some sub par wr's. How does that equate to any other team. NE has Lloyd now and will Brady throwing to him he becomes the deep threat he has always been. Along with the 2 pro bowl te's they field.

Face it...our wr's...scheme...etc won't scare any one in this league. We will be dinking and dunking our way up the field. Gates is frail and Hartline is not fast. BJ Cunningham consistently runs a very high 4.5. That is slow and he is not quick or laterally explosive. You can forget yac or the ability to stretch the field. This is not college football...he will not be productive at this level.

Hakeem Nicks ran a 4.6

Mando, do you even read the dribble you write?!!! Your own example destroys your OWN argument. You point out that the Pats had "mediocre" WR's and upgrading to Moss and Welker made them unbeatable. Thats true if you got superbowl rings for the regular season!! Welker and Moss are still ringless!! it was the "MEDIOCRE" WRs Troy Brown, David Patten, Deion Branch, and David Givens. that won 3 SB's in four years. and to DIS-prove your point even more. NONE of those WR started all 3 super bowls. So just so you are ClEAR Mando thats 3 SB's in for years with # different starting WR combos's. Superstar WR are great but the reality is more often than not its the QB delivering the ball to them that makes them Superstars.

I dont know if this has been brought up yet, BUTT I don't see why everyone is saying we should have done this or done that in this draft. OR that this is a C level draft.

Check the facts, EVERY pick was graded higher than were we picked them except Tannehill and Vernon.

That is all.

Ireland screwed up again. Not drafting a wr on the second day. No big name wr in free agency. All this after trading away Marshall. Wake up lap dog, Mando

Gates, Marlon Moore and Wallace better not be developmental players.

They are going to have to play this year. Sink or swim.

Four Teams ran more than passed. Three of those teams won their division. This off-season, two more teams decided that they had lost sight of who they are and are retrenching...the Jets and Steelers. Either or both of these teams could easily run more than pass next season. The Steelers, in fact, have already said that they will see passing as much as 55% of their offensive plays as failing.

That could be 5 fairly successful franchises (and the Jacksonville Jaguars) who buck the trend. At what point has a trend lost its steam? The reality in the NFL for decades has been that nothing is so consistently successful as balance. Another reality in the NFL is that these shifts have occurred numerous times...the League swings toward high-flying offenses which become a temporary trend. Defenses catch up and surpass and things shift back the pother way.

This is what has been happening. The NFL is no more a passing League than it has been for the past 60 years.

Hakeem Nicks has been shifty and full of moves since his days at N. Carolina. He has always been good after the catch. He can stop and start...uses his stiff arm well and will jump cut to change angles. Haven't seen any thing close from Matthews or Cunningham who are both stiff and look very blah after the catch.

Who was it Moore or Wallace had a 55 yard td catch a 2 years ago I think along the sideline from Henne , these guys may be good players they just couldn't get on the field because of Marshall, now that he is gone they should get their chance to prove they belong and I think they just might do that. This is probably one of the reasons they didn't draft a wide out high in the draft. I am pretty happy with the draft I think! However the 4th round pick on Lamar Miller I kind of Question maybe , because while I do believe in Wallace and Moore as wide outs, we really need safety help now that Bell is gone and I though maybe we would grab one in that round.I don't know anything about Miller maybe he will be really good , but our defense lost its leading tackler and our second best pass rusher in JT so i am concerned for that side of the ball.

For all your negative opinions,I got a question, have you played the game, have you coach the game, have you been a scout for the NFL? mY GUESS IS YOU HAVE NOT!! Therefore, DO NOT MAKE A'SS OF YOUE NOT QUALIFED TO MAKE!eVERYONE DESERVES TO PROVE THEMSELVE AT ANY JOB!!Even you!I've been a DOLPHIN FOR FOUTY SIX YEARS WITH PMA,POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE!! DOLPHIN FOR LIFE!!!

Well actually topic of this article is awesome I like it that....!

Actually this is really great Idea! Just thinking about this a few days ago.
