Mike Sherman shares thoughts about Tannehill

Much has been speculated about what offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, formerly Ryan Tannehill's head coach at Texas A&M, really thinks of the quarterback. I suppose we'll never know the full story unless someone gets Sherman drunk on truth serum.

But Sherman released a statement Thursday night giving you some of his thoughts on the topic:

"Ryan Tannehill is a unique individual. Much has been said about his intellect and athleticism. What hasn't been discussed is his unselfish nature and his "team first" mentality which fits in with coach Philbin's philosophy. four years ago when we were down receivers I asked him to play that position for us because we needed help there. He put his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback on hold to accommodate my request in order to help his team win.

"As far as his quarterback skill level is concerned, I doubt there is a player on Jeff Ireland's draft board who has been scrutinized more than Ryan Tannehill. The general consensus is that he is a talented quarterback with a tremendous upside. As his former head coach, I agree with that evaluation. He has just scratched the surface as a quarterback. His learning curve, however, will be enhanced and accelerated simply because he is coming to an offensive scheme and terminology where he has a lot of familiarity.

He is an extremely competitive person and will embrace the responsibility that goes with being the 8th pick in the NFL draft. There is no doubt he will work to exceed those expectations.

I am excited to have him in the quarterback room with Matt [Moore], David [Garrard], and Pat [Devlin]. He will be a great addition to that group. It will be very competitive to say the least."

Mark Sanchise: Hot dogs are good sideline food Ryan.

Ryan the Lion: They serve hog jowls at Sun Life Stadium?

@GetAClue Well...at this point, I'd say you had better get down on all fours and start giving it to the POOCH!!! Because that's EXACTLY what the BUMBLING DUO of Ross & Ireland did on the 8th pick!!!

What a total WASTE, based on an over reach in an 'Ross style' attempt just to try and increase ticket sales??? What a JOKE, the Dolphins completely missed the boat! Go figure???

We should have gone after Brandon Weeden, and now he's GONE!!! FACT is Weeden SMOKED every QB taken above him today just this past season!

The Cleveland Brown's front office looked like GENIUS' today during the 1st round compared to the BUMBLING DUO!!!

I, for one, ain't buying it or Ross' tickets! NO THANKS.....

Mark Sanchise: Tapping movie star babes is one of the perks of being a first round draft pick in the NFL.

Ryan the Lion: Nah man! My wife will be hot forever. Can't wait until I'm on the hook for child support.

Sanchise girlfriends: He won't ever let me pick out condoms for him.

Tannehills wife: That reminds me, do you girls have a small needle?

Kraft: Nice job Stephen. Now what?

Ross: I'M GOING TO DISNEY LAND!

Sparrow,

Help me out if you can. I'm having one of those JFK/9-11 moments.

That playoff loss to Oakland after the back to back Super Bowls was pretty tuff. But my all time worst moments as a Dolphin fan:

1. Don Shula "Retired".

2. Dan Marino "Retired".

I'm having trouble with no. 3. It's either that play off loss to Oakland or tonight.

Everybody was saying: "Well, at least Ireland didn't screw up by signing Orton, Palmer, etc, etc.

I'd say he MORE than made up for it tonight. I'm certain within the next year or two, Tannehill will have a firm grasp on no. 3.

What do you think?

Start Tannehill from day 1.

This way we can waive him and Ireland sooner rather than later.

The bright side? We can start ACTUALLY REALLY re-Building, hopefully with somebody that knows a little more about football than Pee Wee Herman.

Freaking Matt Millen was even laughing at us tonight.

That pummeling Dan got his last game was pretty depressing. Not sure if you are including that in your #2.

I will say the Ginn signing was pretty depressing also. I guess that would be my #3.

Anything pre 1983 doesn't factor into my brain housing group.

Here is what the purists Dolphin zombies don't understand. If you draft a QB first round you must surround said QB with talent.

How we gonna do that now?

PLUS...Tanne wants #8 money. Not seeing how we pay Wake now.

The only way to pay Wake is to get some other high priced Dolphins to restructure. Why would they do that for a rookie?

Y'all crazy if you think Ryan isn't going to want a long term contract, loaded with incentives and a huge signing bonus.

My GOD! He is the #8 pick in the draft out of 234 draft picks.

No way Wake gets paid. That's why he probably agreed to work out then DIDN'T agree to work out. They probably told him they were drafting Tanne. And that the MONEY was going to him.

Tannehill beat BAYLOR?

Whoop De Doo!

BAYLOR-LOL!

Sure, Griffen was great, but he couldn't do it all.

You know how many guys off of Baylors defense have been drafted so far?

NONE!

Why would Dansby restructure to sign Tanne at the expense of Wake?

He won't!

All the high priced players on this team will never restructure their contracts to sign Tanne and keep Wake.

Tanne is unproven and Wake is proven. Explain to me why Dansby, Bush or Long will restructure for a guy who has never taken a snap in the NFL or Canadian football league?

I take it back. If one of them restructures then they bought into the system. Sight unseen!

If they buy into the system then Miami is on the clock to win a superbowl in 3 years max. After that, its just another dead end road in Miami Dolphins history.

Now its all making sense to me. They didn't want to restructure. So get rid of Marshall and get rid of YB.

All that cap room is going to Tanne.

Much mutiny will befall this team in the next few months.

I did some HR work in my day. You hire the best candidate available. Then you have to figure out how to make it all work.

Point being this...

The draft is easy. Making it work is hard.

You folks think Jeff is up to the challenge? I think Dallas would disagree if you think he is.

Screw Coalition Armando!

I'm BEGGING you, PLEASE!

Ban me. Brainwash me into being a Patriots fan or something.

The Bears and the Lions BOTH did better than us! Christ, the Bears even got our only playmaker?

I'll bet anything that in the 2nd round tomorrow Ireland picks Robert Turbin, the junior RB from utah st.

Don't worry he'll tell the press(as he's missing calls about a trade up in the war room)Turbin will be the next Walter Payton in a few years from now.

Somebody just shoot me......PLEASE!

FVCK!

Let's keep this really real.

Can someone name ONE QB ACORN that Ireland sniffed that is making a difference in the NFL? Right now!

Who among us would take a pay cut for a kid straight out of college?

Not only straight out of college but only graduating with an associates degree.

OK, so Moore and Garrard know what time it is. I'm sure they both will be feeling real loyal to jeffy's dolphins.

How about our best defenders that are getting up there in years? How do you think THEY feel about Jeffy using the no. 1 pick to help the team in 2 to 3 years? They know they will be just about done by then.

If Jeffy ain't trying to help them get a ring, they won't be giving their all for jeffy.

Moore, Garrard, Dansby, Wake, probably Cogs and Burnett too. Their all going to feel outed by jeffy's latest debacle.

And I thought the incompetant handling of the salary cap was a big deal.

Tannehill?

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

This is just to sickening.

I know, I know, you'll all be happy to know, I'm spent. I'm done. I'm out!

(I'm trying to stop you guys, I really am. My apologees)

Well Odin none of them guys put in squat for effort when stuck with retread qb's so maybe they bring their game with a qb with potential?

I'm fine with the Tannehill pick. Absolutely, he's a project and it's not realistic at all to expect him to help much (if at all) this year, but that's the normal template for quarterbacks. The ones who excel as rookies are exceedingly rare. You need look no further than masters of the game such as Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees to certify that. They both sat for a long time before emerging. Hell, Kurt Warner was 29 years old before ever starting an NFL game.

That's not to say I think this guy is a phenom in the making. No clue whatsoever of that will be the case, aside from him having protoype size and clearly being mentally sharp. Could he bomb? Sure.

But let's be clear on one thing. The Dolphins have ZERO chance of getting this franchise back on track until the most important position in the game is finally solved with a difference maker. Whether that comes through the draft or free agency doesn't matter. It just has to happen---and they have to keep going to the well until it does.

Yeah, drafting a 'sure thing' corner or pass rusher may well have helped the 2012 squad do a little better, but this is about (hopefully) striking at the heart of what has ailed this team for so very long. As such, I have no argument at all with the selection.

guys, some of the negative comments being made are EMBARRASING!!! can you really sound so down when the kid hasn't even started studying/practicing? let alone the draft completed so we can get a better idea of how to grade it,get a feel of what the FO have adressed? I understand there is frustration when a team is not at the top winning every game, but please! I read comments about 'if they draft another lineman i'm going to be p*ssed etc) we draft a QB with hopefully the ability to take this team forward and yo ask for the lineman?????????? wtf?????? When the season starts and you see the system and how the players apply themselves for THE TEAM will be the time to start judging and possibly moaning if there are NO signs of progress or desire from the players and coaches.

I think Tannehill will be the starter this year.

If we wanted a clip board holder we could have drafted Ted Ginn's daddy.
No impact player available at 8? There are so many better options, I can't even count them. There are second rounders better than this guy is today.
Patience? Well I have been patient since Marino left.
Ireland drafts a clip board holder. They will pay this guy millions of dollars to hold that clip board and won't take the time to sign their sack leader. This team has really gone to shyte.
Hey everyone, meet Ireland, Ross's new sycophant. Call me when he has his first game on a Sunday evening against Buffalo in December, so I can watch the Bills or Jets break him in half and the 8 and millions of dollars gets sucked down the toilet.
My question is: How did Ross ever get to be a millionaire? Because his team and him are truly stupid.

I've read in all the posted articles what Mike Sherman & Jeff Ireland say about Tannehill, but what does Head Coach Joe Philbin Say?

I was flip flopping between Cox, Floydd, and Tanne, but I'm happy with this pick. I think that Mayock, and the others, not to mention the Miami staff are better talent evaluators than a bunch of guys that are just repeating things they read or heard from a bunch of newspaper hacks. You spout stat after stat, "fact" after "fact", I can appreciate the enthusiasm and the devotion as a fan, but I'm beginning to think if fins drafted Luck, you guys would still be b!tching. I for one sincerely hope Tanne does better than great, who the hell cares if he takes a little time to develop, we aren't going anywhere for a couple yrs anyway. By the time he's ready, hopefully we will have a couple more pieces to the puzzle, and will be serious contenders. I hear this crap that Tanne only started 18 games as a qb, I heard Mayock state yesterday before the draft that 3 other "star" pro qbs started less games as a college qb, so that shouldn't matter. If fins wouldn't have drafted Tannehill, and he ended up being a franchise qb, you'd be whining and moaning, fact is noone knows for sure how a player will turn out, case in point I remember reading certain posters complaining about Bush, at the beginning of the season, then these same posters were calling him a hero at the end of the season. In a nutshell take your so-called "facts" and your second hand stats and shove them up your ars, if you don't like anything the Dolphins do, go away, pick a new team, here's an idea go with the Pats, or Giants, they were just in the super bowl, or maybe the Packers or Steelers they're both pretty consistent... get my drift.

If there was ever a prepared statement over a draft pick, this is it. Good one Sherman. What? Writing a corporate mid year interview for IBM isn't going to make him any better. My guess is the you will be the next head coach when Tanny screws it up and Ireland comes out with his stupid acorn statements and Philbin is left holding the bag.
And where is the coach on this decision. Silent. Like WTF did I get myself into? Better shut up and I should have stayed in Green Bay.
All I can say is at least the Dolphins now speak English and not whatever bafflegab Sparano spoke even if the whole FO is full of it.

I've been following the dolphins since 1966 and this is my first time commenting. From 1970 to 1975 this was one of the most revered teams in the NFL and they were less than 10 years old. Then we had seasons where we struggled to reach .500. Then a guy named Marino was drafted as the 6th QB in the first round. Wasn't a popular decision with many but that changed abruptly as Dan became the most successful rookie QB in NFL history and recognition as one of the greatest of all time. When he was hurt and our team did a nose dive, everyone seemed to want to hang out Shula to dry in favor of Jimmy Johnson. They got their wish...too bad. Look... we're not in the same league as these guys making the decisions. Our team is taking a while to develope but, it is improving. Be patient as winning makes everything better. It's coming. There are 32 teams that want the same thing we want and most are going to be disappointed. If you're choosing to be a fan, then be one. Some of you need some chill pills. All glory is fleeting and the dry spell we're going thru will make the eventuality of winning that much sweeter. If nothing else, treat your team and other fans with the same respect you would demand yourself. You can't drop f-bombs all over the place just to cover the fact that YOU are much worse than our 1-15 team.

No pressure tanny...1st qb since Marino taken in first round. I was 9! ....not sure what my point was anymore...have a nice day

The Nate Palmer piece on my blog is on fire. I am getting a huge amount of hits on there for this piece....

Translation: Please go to my blog, I am starved for attention.

I think JackSparrow and odinseye need to go get a hotel room.
Trash the Dolphins then bang each other.
Not necessarily in that order.

Now that the dust has settled I have to side with the taking of Tannehill. Sherman knows this kid a LOT better than we do & if he was on board with this pick (not sure if Philbin was totally sold on Flynn) then fans need to be relax & wait for this kid to develop. You don't have to be able to start Week One as a rookie in order to become a very good QB. Philbin & Sherman are both VERY competent offensive coaches & I believe in time Tannehill will thrive in their system.

The only two other picks to take @ 8 IMO were Kuechly or Gilmore. These were two very highly rated prospects who didn't have many question marks. With that said if Tannehill pans out a QB is obviously the premier position.

Does this team still need a RT, a WR, & a pass rushing DE??? Absolutely. Four names that are possibilities tonight in the 2nd round;

1) Andre Branch DE
2) Bobbie Massie T
3) Stephen Hill WR
4) Brian Quick WR

Buderica,

Well said. I wished you commented on here more.

Guys would you take Upshaw from Alabama LB or Fleener? Also Stephen Hill or Alshon Jeffries as WR. Who are your choices???

Guys, there's a lot of exaggeration going on today here. People predicting things that have no basis in reality, people happy, people upset. Let me try to make some UNBIASED points without the influence of passion.

First grouping of names: Mother Theresa, Desmond Tutu, Jeff Ireland.

Second grouping of names: Galileo, Einstein, Ireland.

Yes, you read that right, I'm saying Jeff Ireland is a GENIUS and a SAINT!!!

In four years, the QB who will emerge as the TOP QB of this Draft Class is Ryan...Tannehill...4th Generation (I just added that to give his name some weight).

FINALLY, the Miami Dolphins have become a team that's in the hunt of a Championship. It's only taken a decade or so. Halleluyah!!!

Can someone please answer my question regarding the following:

Why would our brain trust have entertained Matt Flynn?? Did they not think he was the real deal? IF so, then why would they have called him in?

Did they believe Flynn was the real deal, but passed for a million or so dollars?

Thinking Flynn would have been the better route and then be able to utilize the 8th pick for an impact player.

Buderica. You are correct. Thank you for speaking with a level head. Will Tannehill be gold or a draft bust? Who knows. But at least the organization is going for it. They are showing they want to win. As a fan that's all I can ask for.

DC,

Ireland is hardly a genius in my eyes. If anything he was extremely lucky if Tannehill works out. His OC was Tannehill's HC for four years & we're going run the same system as the kid ran in college. Connect the dots & the kid actually fell in Ireland's lap.

Let's see how Ireland does in addressing our MUSTS like RT, DE, & WR. With that said I like the pick of Tannehill & he couldn't have come into a better situation with Sherman & Philbin.

Best part of the draft was seeing Quinton Coples moms arm pit hair. Did anyone else see that bush under her arms? Really? National stage, and she cant even shave her pits!

I was projected 6-8 wins this year (before the Draft). Now, after the FIRST ROUND, I'm still predicting 6-8 wins, but the Season will STILL be extremely encouraging and hopeful, and that's because of the prospect of a franchise QB in our midst (and I don't mean Brady when he comes to town).

The rehabilitation of a once proud and recently diminished organization HAS BEGUN!

We Have Draft Picks,

I was on here last night arguing with quite a few of the Tannehill hater/doubters or whatever else you want to call them.

Tannehill was the RIGHT pick, period. Miami has needed a QB for far too long! The entire draft is a risk and Miami took a risk on a very talented player.

Since when does drafting a QB mean they HAVE to start immediately? I just don't get it. Some guys have either don't understand the history of 1st round QBs and more of them bust because they were pused into the fire to early as opposed to guys who sit and LEARN.

Good post bro!

DC is extra nauseating this morning. Give it a rest with your bloated fartair posts.

WHDP,

You're right, genius may be too strong a word (maybe the joy is getting to my head).

How about visionary, virtuoso? Do those work for you?

And, I didn't notice this before, but does Ireland look like a young Superman to anyone else?

I think he has a real good shot at starting this year, if he beats them out I don't see why not it's not likely we are deeply invested in either Matt Moore or Garrard

I have been thinking what direction Miami would go in the 2nd round and keep finding myself torn between pass rusher, Oline and WR. There are a lot of good players still on the board but I just keep coming back to Philbin's press conference after they picked Tannehill. And in there he mentions having to get better on the oline. The 3 players I have at the top of the 2nd are: Jonathon Martin, Cordy Glenn and Amini Silatolu. I really like Silatolu but would be happy with any of these guys.

Which way do you guys think they'll go?

Best case scenario: Matt Moore leads the team to the playoffs this season and Tannehill gets to ride the pine ALL SEASON and learn. Then we let Moore ride off into the sunset and Tannehill takes the reins.

T-Hill, T-Hill, T-Hill

What's wrong Wez, no hope for the future bro? You'd rather sulk in your disappointment than Party like it's 1983?

In the immortal words of Rodney King, CAN'T WE ALL GET ALONG?

Thinking Flynn would have been the better route and then be able to utilize the 8th pick for an impact player.

Mark,

Sorry but I'm going to leave that to the coaches & talent evaluators who know a lot more than we do. Our HC is no longer Tony Sparano & our OC is no longer Dan Henning who ran an outdated offense. Philbin & Sherman are legitimate offensive coaches who know exactly what they want to do on offense (no more Wildcat) & they know which QB is the best fit.

On a side note--Flynn signed a three year/$26 Million deal which is a LOT more than Luck is about to make not to mention Tannehill. Flynn didn't start a whole lot of games @ LSU & had only two NFL starts in one of the best offenses in football so he's far from being a sure thing.

"Good post bro!"

Andy,

Thanks. :)

Texas, I think pass-rusher. There's been a run on that position, who knows who'll be left if we wait until the 3rd. I think they trade up also to get a WR. I think they go pass-rusher/WR in the 2nd. Lineman in the 3rd. WR in the 4th. Then all the other acorns.

Since Tannehill is pre-med his new nickname should be "The Surgeon". :)

FINS TOOK THE WRONG RYAN!

They had to take Matt Ryan NOT Ryan Tannehill.

Mr. Ross, please fire Ireland if the team has another losing season.

DC,

My fellow brother who see's the light of a 1st round QB! So many guys were in here last night bashing the pick and it was touching a nerve. In the end these are the same guys who probably believe Matt Moore can be a top 10 QB.

So many QBs have flopped because they were thrown into the fire too early, lost confidence and became a deer in headlights. Look at the recent success of Phillip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers and even non first rounders Brady, Romo who all were groomed for a year or more and look at how successful they have become.

You doubters need to take a step back and get some perspective on the QB and how in some cases it takes time.

On Armondo's show Ireland says they are going after OLine and WR today. So you're probably right DC, they'll go pass rusher.

I have been thinking what direction Miami would go in the 2nd round and keep finding myself torn between pass rusher, Oline and WR. Texas,

I forgot about Cordy Glen. Martin is considered "soft" so I wouldn't take him to be our RT. That's like taking Carey all over again. I like Andre Branch as a pass rushing DE, Massie if we go RT, & Stephen Hill or Brian Quick @ WR. Even though he's from a small school I actually prefer Quick to Hill.

On Armondo's show Ireland says they are going after OLine and WR today. So you're probably right DC, they'll go pass rusher.

LOL@Texas. We do have three picks....

Now we need to build around Tannehill. Play him from day one, we may lose but it will give us better draft picks next year and teach Tannehill better than holding a clip board.

Get pass rush and reciever in the 2nd by trading up out of one of our 3rd's.

Find an RT or RG with the other 3rd or the 4th rd pick.

Should we move up in the second to get one the recievers still on the board? I see Denver and Baltimore targeting recievers in the second round.

After months of ridiculing anyone wanting Tannehill at 8, it only took YG DB 17 seconds to flip 180 and applaud the pick.
