Mike Sherman shares thoughts about Tannehill

Much has been speculated about what offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, formerly Ryan Tannehill's head coach at Texas A&M, really thinks of the quarterback. I suppose we'll never know the full story unless someone gets Sherman drunk on truth serum.

But Sherman released a statement Thursday night giving you some of his thoughts on the topic:

"Ryan Tannehill is a unique individual. Much has been said about his intellect and athleticism. What hasn't been discussed is his unselfish nature and his "team first" mentality which fits in with coach Philbin's philosophy. four years ago when we were down receivers I asked him to play that position for us because we needed help there. He put his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback on hold to accommodate my request in order to help his team win.

"As far as his quarterback skill level is concerned, I doubt there is a player on Jeff Ireland's draft board who has been scrutinized more than Ryan Tannehill. The general consensus is that he is a talented quarterback with a tremendous upside. As his former head coach, I agree with that evaluation. He has just scratched the surface as a quarterback. His learning curve, however, will be enhanced and accelerated simply because he is coming to an offensive scheme and terminology where he has a lot of familiarity.

He is an extremely competitive person and will embrace the responsibility that goes with being the 8th pick in the NFL draft. There is no doubt he will work to exceed those expectations.

I am excited to have him in the quarterback room with Matt [Moore], David [Garrard], and Pat [Devlin]. He will be a great addition to that group. It will be very competitive to say the least."

TANNEHILL WILL START THIS SEASON TO FILL THE SEATS AND MAKE ROSS HAPPY,WE DIDN'T DRAFT HIM @ 8 TO SIT ON THE SIDELINE.......

ANDY DALTON WAS PICK IN THE SECOND ROUND AND TOOK HIS TEAM TO THE PLAYOFFS ,,,,,,,WHY NOT TANNEHILL @ 8 ......?

Craig,

Oh I like Branch too. I just was throwing names out there and forgot him. I think he could very well be the pick too lol. So kinda tough leaving him off.

Texas,

I like Brian Quick too. He's 6'3 220 and runs a 4.5

THE WAY THE DOLPHIN FANBASE THINK IS LIKE A PLUMBER LOOKING AT CLOGED PIPE ..........

inimounts,

We did? Didn't we play Henne 19 games into his career. Do you think he was ready? I don't.

'The fanbase will be understanding'. They will? Didn't they want blood, basically from day one. Biggest mistake would be to start this kid too early. Not sure how the Packers were able to wait three years without there being a riot in GB but we need to do something similar. By all accounts he's a quick learner but we need to REALLY take our time with this kid. We're not winning anything any time soon. Let's actually BUILD something, rather than patching all the time.

I am not a fan at all of Streeter. He seems to be a 1 route pony and he's not even good at that route.

2nd rd Jonathan Martin OT Stanford
3rd rd Mohamed Sanu WR Rutgers
3rd rd Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnati
4th rd Orson Charles TE Georgia
5th rd DeQuan Menzie CB Alabama
6th rd Miles Burris OLB San Diego State
7th rd Philip Thomas FS Syracuse

Sitting on the bench didn't hurt Rodgers that much. Not sure what the big deal is.

Nhfinsfan....really? Because with this team there is a strong possibility we do go 2-10.....and we have the first pick, do we still forget tannehill and pass up on barkeley or jones, who, trust me, both after this collegiate year will be said to be nfl ready and elite???
NOTHING can be gained from waiting, nothing. He has no one to learn from, and u FOOLS think that watching the game from the sideline can help him?? Aaron Rodgers huh? That's ur go to. Aaron Rodgers held a clipboard, like Steve young, to watch two nfl legends command a team. Tannehill is already better than Moore and garrard.
Start him, or at best he will come in late and screw up our draft picks for next year.
One last thing, yes Andrew luck is starting because why? Not because they have no one else, but because he needs to learn on the field, like almost every first round qb before him. They expect a losing season, but fans will be patient. And we can sit by. What we can't sit by idly and watch is taking the biggest risk by far in this draft AND having to wait two years before we even START to know if it changed us for Better or for worse?
One word. No.

Let the best QB be the starter.

Henne never would have started if Pennington didn't get injured.

Tannehill shouldn't start if he can't show in practice that he's better than Moore or Gerrard.

Texas dolfan, what streeter are u talking about? Really? U know who else was one route? Jimmy graham. But ur right. Cane players don't transition well to the ,nfl, like every other school. Oh wait, I have that backwards.

6 Guys left in the green room. Maybe, Just maybe Randle could be there at 42.

Coby Fleener
Cordy Glenn
Stephen Hill
Rueben Randle
Devon Still
Courtney Upshaw.

Ok I'm not looking at anymore first rd draft grades. The first one I looked at gave us a D. Screw the media.

On to the positive. We have 3 picks today. How would you guys feel about 4 or 5 picks today and no picks tomorrow?

Rick,

The media is clueless

ROGERS WAS SITTING ON THE BENCH FOR 3 YEARS B/C........

1- FAVRE WAS THERE ,AND NEVER LEFT.

2- ROGERS WAS MAKING A 800,00 A YEAR NOT 20 MILLION A YEAR.

3- TANNEHILL WILL BE MAKING ABOUT 8-12 MILLION A YEAR......

IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY DONKEYS.........

In round 2 re-mock, Mel Kiper has Miami taking Alshon Jeffrey.

I like Jeffrey but he didn't work out at the combine, struggles with weight and doesn't appear to be that fast, quick, explosive yards after the catch guy Miami has lacked forever.

Round 2 for me - Vinny Curry DE or Jerel Worthy DT. Only my opinion but I have watched both of them and both are high motor and productive and both play pissed off.

Round 3 - Brian Quick, Joe Adams, Keshawn Martin. Miami needs a WR at some point in the draft and in Packer fashion Round 3 is where you find them.

Round 3 pick 2 - Dwayne Allen (if he falls that far) or best CB available.

Random thoughts.

Round 3 pick 2 -

Rick,

I think sometimes the media wants all the drama in the pick. They want to see all the trading around and maneuvering to get that player they want. Truth is we got the player we wanted and needed and he's a good player. I say we get an "A". And there was no drama. :)

Craig M, all u r doing is buying into what philbin and Sherman want u to, which is this: let tannehill sit, so that no matter how bad we r, u will give us another year. We saw cam, sparano, we want to ensure more.
U people dont get it at all. What was the ONLY reason why Rodgers sat? Steve young? The ONLY reason is because they had someone better in front of them. It wasn't even so they could learn from the best! It was because they weren't the best option at the time.
I say, let the best qb start. It should be tannehill in this group, and if it isn't, then we should be wary.
One more thing, if moneyball taught us anything, Craig, is that old school thinking is for the most part...old. And sitting a first round qb was rare back in the day, but top ten pick, now? Not an option. Even if they do sit, they will not sit the whole year because the team will realize their mistake. Qbs like Andy dalton, can newton, early qbs should start right away. Peyton manning wouldn't be himself if he hadn't, neither would marino, Elway, big Ben, flacco, Ryan, cutler, should I keep going?
Oh and to prove ur wrong about henne, as urself why he sat? Was it so he could learn? No. It was because, like I said, he wasn't our best option. Sitting henne is ridiculous anyways for experience, since almost no qb has come out of college with more.

ALOCO,

'Donkeys'??.....

'Tannehill making $8-12 mil a year'? In what world are you living these days? Where did you come up with that?

Agreed Texas,

They are blinded by thinking movement means success.

Would anyone be willing to use our extra 3rd rd pick next year to secure 5 picks today?

They draft is awfully deep through the 3rd rd and we need a couple of starters.

Should I be flattered I was the only one attacked for my site link?

:)

Can we at least agree out of all 3 QBs taken in the first round we got the LEAST goofy looking of the 3 and the one with by FAR the hottest significant other!!!

People forget that the Fins lost 5 games by 3 points or less.

They could have been 11-5 and not 6-10.

They could win the close games in 2012 if:

1)The light bulb turns on for several skill position players.
2)At least two draft picks contribute, like now
3)Moore becomes a legit top 10 QB with a full training camp and pre-season and takes like a fish to water in the WCO system
4)The new defense scheme works

Even though Aloco can't say something without being an ass about it he's right. With the money tannehill will get, no way do I want him on the bench. He doesn't get a free ride this year.
I think we can sign him for six mill a year tho, if he doesn't like it and doesn't see how lucky he is, let him sit. But no way does he make the money an 8 pick should unless it's incentive driven.

I don't see the 2 guys I really would want being there that's why I have Vinny Curry and Worthy as the guys I want because I see them possibly being there.

But the real guy I would want at this point is Courtney Upshaw. He has to have the hugest chip on his shoulder at this point. He was projected to go as high as 11 to KC, 12 Seattle or at worst was supposed to be a steal for the Jets at 16 and he is still there. I know he's been hit with the tweener label and he probably us but for the 4-3 and some 3-4 look Miami is supposed to go with he might be one hell of a player and pickup in round 2.

inimounts,

Who sh*t in your Cornflakes this morning? Take a down a level, fella...

Listen bud, your welcome to your opinion but you're all over the map with your thinking. Let's just call a spade a spade, shall we? You don't like the kid, and you're pissed because they spent the 8th pick in the draft on him. Everything after this is irrelevant, OK....

craig m................. LOOK AT THE QB'S SALARY PER YEAR WHEN THEY R DRAFTED TOP 10 IN THE LAST 2 YEARS..........

LOOK AT NEWTON AND WATCH LUCK AND RG3 MAKING ABOUT 15 MILLION A YEAR ........THEY WILL MAKE THEIR TEAMS RICHER BY THE DAY................

TANNEHILL FOR SURE NOT LESS THAN 9 MILLION A YEAR,,,YOU DON'T DRAFT A TOP PICK AT 8 AND GIVE HIM 4.8 MILLION AS YOU GAVE POUNCY,,,,,,,,

WE R TALKING A QB WHO COULD TURN YOUR WHOLE TEAM AROUND .......

Andynj, why are u on the defensive side of the ball? We were top ten (or five) in almost every category.
The media says we need players, so u think we need players. How about we draft wide receivers, maybe an right tackle/guard, and score points? Ohh and about ur pass rusher, how about instead we ask odrick and misi to do their damn jobs? Thoughts?

Swamy, Miami has been losing games by 3 points or less for a LONG time. That's a bogus argument. How many 3 points or less games did we lose when we were 1-15.

We weren't close in 2011. Unless you're saying we were close to the bottom.

inimounts,

What kind of money do you think Tannehill is going to get paid? Is this what it's about? Curious what kind of money you think the 8th pick gets.

Inimounts, I'm very receptive to your argument on drafting offensive talent. However, if we get ANYONE on defense, it should be a pass-rusher. Asking Misi to step up (while he's locked up) would not be a wise decision.

inimounts and ALoco,

I case you missed it there is something called a ROOKIE WAGE scale now in the NFL.

Last years's 8th overall pick Jake Locker signed a 4 year $12.6 deal. Do the math!

Let me start by saying, I do not like Jeff Ireland one bit. He's clueless the majority of the time. Secondly, this team will be lucky to go 6-10 again this season. Still can't believe why they didn't improve the salary cap to bring in a couple much needed, proven talented players in free agency. There are still too many overpaid average players on this roster. A receivers unit that's not complete, a weak O-line, and 2 running backs that have high potential for getting seriously injured. BUT.... I like the Tannehill pick! We've got to give these new coaches a chance. Now- I would love for this team's FO to start learning from their mistakes. Teams that had an advantage last night were teams that had 2 or more picks in the first round. New England does it every year. Ireland & CO must learn how to do this. How to know when its time to put a player on the trading block and get valued first round picks for future use. If you want to build through the draft, this is how its done!

6 MILLION WOULD NOT DO IT ........

WAKE WILL BE MAKING 6-7 MILLION A YEAR.......
DANSBY IS MAKING 8 MILLION A TEAR .
POUNCY IS MAKING CLOSE TO 5 MILLION A YEAR .......

SO YOUR FRANCHISE QB WILL MAKE MORE,THIS IS REALITY ..............

TANNIHILL WAS DRAFTED @ 8 .AND WILL NOT REPEAT HENNE'S DUMB MISTAKE BY TAKING 600,000 A YEAR.

Craig,
I don't like cornflakes. Could ear golden crisp all day though...
As for our pick, I don't know that we had another choice. We shouldve went for and gotten rg3, but I LOVE our pick. We need a qb, actually my fb status said before the draft if we don't draft tannehill or Floyd (or move up for blackmon) I will go crazy on Ireland.
I just do not like him sitting. Dude is right, he will make insane money (pouncey makes 5 mill, a lineman picked where he was just a year ago), lets say tannehill gets 8, we will stay low....do u really want us paying him 16 before we even see him throw? No way. We need to know if he's make or break ASAP.

inimounts...you make some solid points. IF Tannehill is the better QB at the end of camp, then the coaches will make that determination.
Worst case scenario is to toss him onto the battlefield before he's ready will set him back.

But we are just speculating and the coaching staff will make the call.

Andy,

Don't let something like FACTS cloud the judgement of some of these guys. Ridiculous!

Guys are bent out of shape thinking Tannehill is making $6-12 million a year holding a clipboard. Do some reading before you spout off fellas....

As a Dolphan for 42 of my 48 years, I have a long memory. I remember another player that was highly recommended by a newly hired coach that was a "sure fire" pick. #19 didn't work out that well. I remember another Ryan that was highly touted by the experts at the QB position. He's more prominently featured now on mug shots. I remember how nearly every offensive impact player this team has drafted in the first or second round has ultimately disappointed, and how the current Dolphins brain trust has failed in their evaluations significantly more than the league average. I remember this and more, and therefore must remember to stock up on the Maalox for the next couple of seasons.

inimounts,

We were 25th against the pass and 26th in takeaways is why I am on the defensive side of the ball.

A pass rusher is sorely needed to help that pass D. A CB is sorely needed to get takeaways.

Nhfinsfan, how about the point that was just made? That if he sits it will be at least 16 mill (not including signing bonus) before we see him throw one ball. To me that's scary.
Can we please stop talking about drafting a defensive player in the second and third? We need points. Alshon Jeffrey to me is a great pick, he is a steal because like Floyd he has had no one to throw to him. I like streeter as our late third pick. I know some of u don't but canes receivers (players for that matter) segue to the nfl best of all.

ANDY......IF THE CONTRACT IS MORE THAN 2 YEARS ,ALL RULES ARE OUT.........

UPDATE: Jeff has become the #1 name for a baby boy in the Miami-Dade area.

We don't get interceptions because we don't have a safety. It's not the pass rushing, it's Sean smith and no safeties. I said that we were top ten in everything except int's didn't I? Well, I meant to.
If corners have safeties they can trust, then they are allowed to take chances. I know everyone loved yeremiah bell but we haven't had a true safety that eases the corners mind in a long time. So, if the picks are safety or cb then yeah, I won't be too upset. But other than that, there's no point in drafting a qb 8 of he has no one to throw to...we can at least agree on that, right? Lol

ONE OF THE REASONS WE GOT READY OF MARSHALL IS TO CLEAR MONEY FOR MR TANNEHILL

inimounts,

Where are you getitng these numbers from? 'Mike Pouncey makes $5 mil a year'? 'It's be at least $16 million to Tannheill before we see him throw a ball'.

Not getting where you are getting ANY of this stuff from. Please explain....

Janoris Jenkins needs to be picked.

CRAIG M......... WE R NOT AT DOMINO'S PIZZA HERE.BUY ONE GET 15 FREE.......POUNCY IS MAKING CLOSE TO 5 MILLION A YEAR ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,''TANNEHILL WILL BE MAKING MORE ......

RT or WR in the 2nd I'd take either Martin/ Massie
or Hill/ Randle

ALOCO,

What the f*ck are you talking about? Have you been drinking this morning? 'After two years all rules are out....' Huh?

Please explain. Andy pointed out that Jake Locker signed a 4 year $12 mil contract last year as the number 8 pick. There's a rookie salary scale in place. Where are you guys coming up with some of these numbers from?

In 2011 the Carolina Panthers selected Auburn quarterback Cam Newton first overall and once the lockout was lifted signed him to a four year deal worth $22 million. Thats about 5 mil a year for #1 overall.
Maybe check yourself again before spewing off numbers that are obviously not true just to scream about something

Mike strejc, no one can question a dolfan of a half century (almost). But we all remember another draft pick late in the first round that some were questioning, how did 13 work out? :)
U are dead on about this regimes drafting, I would only say that u were too nice about just being lower than the league average. We have players that make the team that shouldn't, we have draft picks that start that shouldn't (all of our secondary but one, for instance).
After the zsonka years and the Marino years, I can't imagine how hard the last two decades have been. Stay strong, brother!

inimounts,

Safeties are helpful in the passing game obviously but pass rush and CBs are more important so say Janoris Jenkins a top 15 talent slides to Miami you wouldn't consider him? Vinny Curry a borderline 1st rounder with pass rush skills you wouldn't take him?

I mean don't get me wrong with all the holes if Fleener fell in Miami's lap or Bobby Massie or Reuban Randle as well I'd be happy but you can just say this D is solid so let's pass on a player higher on the board to get an offensive player.

So...do we let the best players play, specifically at QB

or

do should the Fins toss Tannehill into the deep end of the pool to see if he sinks or swims?

CRAIG M......POUNCEY SIGNED 4 YEARS FOR 15 MILLION PLUS INCENTIVES TO AVERAGE 5 MILLION A YEAR AND HE WAS PICKED @ 15.

LOCKER WAS PICKED @ 8 AND SIGNED 4 YEARS FOR A MILLION LESS PLUS VERY GOOD INCENTIVES TO MAKE ALMOST 6 MILLION A YEAR ......

SO IF WHAT SAYS IS TRUE ,HOW COME THE 15 PICKS SIGNED FOR MORE THAN A PLAYER WHO WAS PICKED @ 8 ?

Btw,

The Jake Locker comparison is the guy Tannehill most resembles. Guy needs time to develop too. Could be the Titans played him a little bit more than they wanted to last season, so we'll see what they do with him this year and how that works out.

Newsflash to all the impatient fans thinking/expecting Tannehill to play.....they didn't keep Moore and sign Garrard so that Tannehill can play. Use your brain folks. Don't know where you come up with the idea that Tannehill is a better QB than Moore and Garrard but you onbviously don't know anything about the NFL game and all it takes to learn making a commment like that.

inimounts,

Also the Giants have to blue print to beat the Pats and we play them twice a year and it's who looks down on the whole AFC East. The way you beat them is with more then 1 pass rusher which is all we have and that guy is holding out (Wake).

Curry, Branch or a possible steal Upshaw would be great additions to a so so pass rush.

Miami has a ton of holes but teams draft counter who is in their division. Miami needs to counter the Pats and Brady with pass rush and cover corners. That is why I think defense is the way to go unless Fleener or some other potential starting type offensive player is available.

Craig,
I pulled the pouncey number from here, to be honest, but it sounds about right. I'm sure u would agree that every year the rookies make more (and regardless of goodell and the new 'agreement' they prob will this year too)...so I would look at what mark Sanchez signed and say he is going to have at least that kind of contract.
Do u guys really think, on another note, that luck or rg3 will make 15 a year? I think they will make more, IMHO. Agree to disagree on that.

NEWTON IS MAKING AMOST 12 MILLION A YEAR WITH PANTHERS INCLUDING INCENTIVES AND DEALS .

Aloco, jake locker is a sports phenomenon....he stayed with a crap team in college for another year (where he literally was the only talent) for his teammates and to be closer to his mom and dad for another year when he would've fought Bradford the top pick, I bet he just signed the first thing the titans through at him. Great kid.
Is tannehill the same? We will see.

SANCHEZ SIGNED HIS FIRST CONTRACT FOR 75 MILLION ,4 YEARS.
