Mike Sherman shares thoughts about Tannehill

Much has been speculated about what offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, formerly Ryan Tannehill's head coach at Texas A&M, really thinks of the quarterback. I suppose we'll never know the full story unless someone gets Sherman drunk on truth serum.

But Sherman released a statement Thursday night giving you some of his thoughts on the topic:

"Ryan Tannehill is a unique individual. Much has been said about his intellect and athleticism. What hasn't been discussed is his unselfish nature and his "team first" mentality which fits in with coach Philbin's philosophy. four years ago when we were down receivers I asked him to play that position for us because we needed help there. He put his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback on hold to accommodate my request in order to help his team win.

"As far as his quarterback skill level is concerned, I doubt there is a player on Jeff Ireland's draft board who has been scrutinized more than Ryan Tannehill. The general consensus is that he is a talented quarterback with a tremendous upside. As his former head coach, I agree with that evaluation. He has just scratched the surface as a quarterback. His learning curve, however, will be enhanced and accelerated simply because he is coming to an offensive scheme and terminology where he has a lot of familiarity.

He is an extremely competitive person and will embrace the responsibility that goes with being the 8th pick in the NFL draft. There is no doubt he will work to exceed those expectations.

I am excited to have him in the quarterback room with Matt [Moore], David [Garrard], and Pat [Devlin]. He will be a great addition to that group. It will be very competitive to say the least."

Wouldn't be ironic if Henne has a top ten QB season with the Jags?

Posted by: Swamy | April 27, 2012 at 12:00 PM

If he can get the ball to Justin Blackmon consistently he just may.

I hope ireland chose this guy based upon his belief that he is a franchise qb - not to save his job. If you think about it he bought himself 3 more years as the gm - this year he will sit and watch, next year he will play and make alot of mistakes and maybe third year if all goes well compete. Pressure off ireland since he has the excuse that tannehill is raw and needs to develop - I can sse it already "we need to give it time." 3 more years of ireland!

bigt160,

Been good man, thanks. Had a really busy day yesterday and I wasn't sure it was all going to come together for me to see the draft last night. Could friend of mine (Lions fan) had to bail because of work, despite us having planned it weeks in advance. I'm happy with the pick. This is what I wanted. I have no clue if he'll pan out but I'm not going to lose any sleep if it doesn't work out. Happy to see what else Ieland comes away with this weekend.

Swamy,

He's got a weapon he can utilize now in Blackmon and I believe they Robinson as well. Henne's got all the tools. He just needs to be a lot more consistent and a lot more effective in the Red Zone. Good luck to him...hope it works out for him.

i like the pick. Why are people sleeping on Garrard. Interesting fact...he has never had a season with more picks than TD's. If we can grab Fleener i think we will be in business offensively as T hill sits and learns behind Garrard

The problem is that the shear fact that Ireland likes this makes it the wrong pick. The next time this idiot is right will be the first time.

I am glad we drafted Tannehill. I actually hope he spends a year holding a clip-board (unless he outright wins the QB battle). I think Moore will generate enough offense (or get killed because of inferior O-Line).

Throwing Tannehill out on the gridiron prematurely is not in our best interests.

What is a "shear" fact? Something to do with sheep?

I swear, there are some here who'd whine if we picked the Incredible Hulk in the 7th round...

My gut tells me this is too good to be true. This team is acting like Tannehill is the one.

In my mind, they are making chicken salad out of chicken #@!%.

I hope I am dead wrong about this kid. If I'm wrong then this team will be good. So let's all hope I am wrong.

Throwing Tannehill out on the gridiron prematurely is not in our best interests.

Of course not, but to the resident idiots here it will be an indication of a 'failed pick.'

You are far too sensible for this place.

I hate the concept of sitting a guy for a year, didnt we do that with Henne, how that turn out? Throw the guy to the wolves and see if he'll turn into a wolf himself or a sheep..

People are also sleeping on Clay which is now in an offense that fits his skills. We may already have our fleener. And what about Odrick who was basically a rookie comming off of a season ending injury last year and played his butt off. Think of this.. Justin Smith is one of the best 3-4 ends. Smith finished with 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 3 FF. Odrick finished with 22 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 FF, and even an interception with less than half the snaps. Odrick took 45 percent of def snaps while Smith took close to 90 percent. Thats exactly half the snaps(ALSO HAD A GAME WHERE HE TOOK 90 SNAPS. look it up). if you double Odricks snaps your talking a potential rookie season of 44 tackles, 12 sacks, 2 FF, and who knows maybe 2 picks

The best thing for Tanehille is for him to sit this year.

I like Matt Moore and Gerrard could be a nice backup.

Nobody can say 100% what tanehille will be, but I like the pick.

Craig M....DC....and others....

People are also sleeping on Clay

For those that are still living in the past thinking that the OL is where it all begins and you have to build it first, Yesterday is Truly Gone. The days where the OL was a huge foundation to build a team on are OVER. Yes you still need one, and a good one but it IS a QB league. Baltimore has one of the BEST Defenses and can rush the heck out of every QB and a damn fine OL too. BUT they can't even get to the Big Game because Flacco is NOT a franchise QB. Franchise QB's go to and WIN the Big Game, and they are almost always picked in the 1st round. We've been living in the past, wasting 1st round draft choice after 1st round draft choice on OL and what has it gotten us. NOTHING. Because we didn't have a franchise QB, and NO Moore isn't either.

Finally it appears that the rest of the NFL already knew this. There's only 1 QB on the field at a time and 5 Offensive Linemen on the field at a time. So you need a whole lot of them, 5 of them starters. YET out of the 32 picks in yesterdays NFL 1st round, there were 4 QB's taken, 3 in the top 10 and the 4th taken before the 2nd OL was off the board. There were only 4 OL taken and only ONE in the top 20.

I hope you will be supportive and understanding when your children aanounce they are converting to Zoroastrianism and dressing as giant bananas.

Are you talking about the Miami Dolphins?

Because if you're talking about the Miami Dolphins, you're talking SUPER BOWL, biatch!!!

Clue...thanks.....

I am never ready for that....hopefully this one will be like me...a morning person...

How does anyone think Sherman and Tannehill will be successful in the pros when they were not successful in college ball? Tannehill lost 6 games as a senior in college!!

Dysfunctional.....

Ross believes that.....and we ar ALL along for the ride....

RoboHenne wont see the field in Jax.

I really was surprised Miami didn't trade down before drafting Tannehill, but it seems that Tannehill was the plan all along. Kudos to Ireland for having the balls to make this pick. But I guess if it doesn't work and the owner wanted him too, and can't completely blame Ireland.

So now that Tannehill is a Dolphin, let's hope he turns into the franchise QB we are all hoping he can be. I am very interested to see what Miami does in the 2nd and 3rd round as we still need a ton of help but there are some very good players available.

Go Fins!

Here are Tannehill's stats in the year 2017:

3500 passing
62%
35/8
500 rushing
4 rushing TDs

Kris,

Ross is as clueless as they come.

Heck, Ross said Henne was the 2nd coming of Dan Marino! LMFAO!!

Beam me up Scotty!

Love the "Incredible Hulk" comment, you are right, people would complain about it. When is eligible anyway?

Lets see Moore in the WCO, let Tanny sit for a year. Garrard can even come in and save the season if Moore just bombs, which i doubt. We are better set at QB this year than we have been in awhile actually.

Posted by nino: "We are better set at QB this year than we have been in awhile actually"

Wow that's not saying much at all.

Good point ultra, it's sad that it's even true! but still, i'll take every morsel of hope i can get

Posted by Swamy: "Wouldn't be ironic if Henne has a top ten QB season with the Jags?"

No but it would be at least a small miracle.

I'm only gonna say this once.

You give Tanny every chance to start period!! New coaches and new system, no need to wait on this. Weaker schedule this year. YOU START HIM!!

As for the draft tonight, that TE Coby Fleener from Stanford would a solid pick up!!

PERFECT FIT!!!

Kris,

We'll find out soon enough if Tannehill was the right pick. I hope it works out, not because I want to be right but because I want this team to win and be successful. I know well all do (well at leat most of us do). I said before the draft the I had NO clue whether he will work out or not but I like the fact they took a chance. Fingers crossed....

Ok.. We took Tannehill, lets wait and see how that develops. Teams are trading up, trading down and Ireland sits pat. Second round needs to address WR. To do that, we need to move up in the 2nd and grab either R. Randle or S. Hill, basically, whichever one is left after STL 1st pick in the 2nd rd.
I'd also be VERY interested in TE C. Fleener, he's still out there, but wont last for long. This is another Gronkowski waiting to happen. Grow some balls Ireland, move up and get on of these guys to help your new QB, instead of making the safe, although also needed, OL pick in B. Massie or J. Martin.

If we pick a WR in the 3rd round (plus an o-line man in the 2nd) I don't know if any decent DE would still be available tomorrow.

However we can still take a decent WR in the 4th round. Someone like Nick Toon, Marvin McNutt, Jarius Wright, etc. Maybe even Streeter will still be available!

Kris, very respectable that you're taking it like a man. There's other whiners here who want to take their ball and go home.

In the end, if it works out, I won't say, "I told you so," I'll just be thrilled to be winning. And if it doesn't, I'm DEFINITELY expecting a beatdown from you, Rob in OC and others.

Also, I want to get past this episode, because it's really no fun when Craig and I are on the same side. I prefer to battle with Craig than agree with him (sorry Craig, it's just funner that way).

Hopefully Rd 2 will give us something to argue about (but I'm 100% behind Ireland right now so it'll be hard).

How does anyone think Sherman and Tannehill will be successful in the pros when they were not successful in college ball? Tannehill lost 6 games as a senior in college!!

Posted by: Dysfunctional Dolphins | April 27, 2012 at 01:11 PM

Was it Tannehill that lost six games as a senior or was it the Texas A&M Football TEAM?

And to think all this time reasonable fans thought football was a team sport.

I'm not a fan of Mike Sherman and his ZERO NFL accomplishments (ie, no Superbowl titles) and his terrible record and Texas A&M, where he was fired in disgrace. HOWEVER, if Tannehill really sucked or if there were some issues, I'm sure Shermie would have found them out and told Ireland. Shermie probably didn't have the authority to tell the Phins to draft Tanny. But he would have had the pull to say "Stay away from this bum, he's a disaster." So the fact that Sherman did not nix the deal tells me that Tanny is for real.

DC,

DD as well. He was very much against the drafting of Tannehill. You and I may have to find another blog to hang on if Tannehill falls and can't get up again....LOL.

Some good looking WRs in the second round guys. Here's the list:

Stephen Hill
Rueben Randle
Alshon Jeffery
Brian Quick
Chris Given
Sanu

Some good ones there. Who do we like?

BUTCH UP IRELAND... Grow a pair and trade up and grab Fleener, the TOP TE in the draft. There is a HUGE drop off after that on TE's.

DC,

You're right. I'm getting along with too many people on here lately. Kris and I don't see eye to eye on too many things but it's been peaceful for the most part.

So what do you want to disagree on DC? We can start now if you like. This morning I said pass rush first but maybe the way to go is WR first. What do you think? Do you like Stephen Hill?

BTW... Nick Toon, Marvin McNutt, Jarius Wright, D NOT excite me.
R. Randle and Stephen Hill excite me. After them, there is also a HUGE drop off !
