Notes from first day of voluntary minicamp

It was a day for establishing practice habits. It was a day to make sure fundamentals were on point. It was a day in which Dolphins coaches challenged players mentally.

The result of Tuesdays two practices at this voluntary veteran minicamp?

""I really liked the way the guys worked," coach Joe Philbin said. "I thought their work ethic was excellent. Obviously, we made a lot of mistakes from a technique and fundamental standpoint. There wasn't a whole lot of blown assignments believe it or not so I think the guys were attentive, I think they gave effort. I think we're off to a good start."

Cameron Wake was the only player of 64 on the roster who did not report today. He has missed various times this offseason to call attention to his displeasure over his contract situation.

The quarterbacks-- David Garrard and Matt Moore -- split the reps "almost dead even" Philbin said and Wednesday Pat Devlin will get more work.

The center-quarterback exchange was sloppy today. Moore and Mike Pouncey, who had issues last year, had a couple of problems with the exchange today.

A lot of my twitter followers mocked me when I mentioned I like Mississippi State defensive tackle Fletcher Cox as Miami's first-round pick if they select at No. 8. Some said it makes no sense to add another defensive tackle when Randy Starks, Jared Odrick and Paul Soliai are likely defensive tackles.

Well, the Dolphins don't necessarily see Odrick as a 4-3 DT. They think he might be a fit as a 4-3 DE.

"We're intrigued by him," Philbin said. "We think he has a chance to fit in a couple of different spots. Obviously, in the sub packages he's done a good job inside as a rusher. We think he may have a fit as an outside (defensive end) player as well."

Speaking of Ryan Tannehill, it is obvious that offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, formerly Tannehill's coach at Texas A&M, has briefed the Dolphins on his former quarterback. But it's not like you think.

"We've talked obviously a lot," Philbin said. "We''ve had draft meetings. We've discussed him as an individual. We've watched his film. Obviously, Mike has been around Ryan for a long, long time. But it wasn't like we sat around and said, 'OK what about him at No. 8?"

"Remember a coach doesn't have the same perspective on the draft that a general manager has. A coach doesn't exhaustively watch player A and compare him to B and to C and to D and to F ... We really haven't had any discussions where he should go. But certainly he's a resource so we've asked him some questions about him."

Jake Long said he feels "as healthy as I've felt in a while." Old Faithful is back.

Odrick and linebacker Karlos Dansby, meanwhile, missed work both in the morning and afternoon drills with unknown injuries.

Armando,

Here is the question:

How does the the front 7 look if we move to a 4-3?
It will be interesting to see if and where players can play. This could greatly impact our 1st pick.

Best 4 D-Linemen on Roster: Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Wake maybe (is Wake too small)? If Wake is too small we have a major need and Cox could come into play at 8. If we draft Cox, that front 4 looks good without Wake so could he then play OLB in a 4-3? He is not great against the run or in coverage so it makes me think D-Line must be the plan for him which lessens the need for a D-lineman with the 8th pick even though it is still a need. If he is part of that front 4 I do not see Cox as a top priority. Wake is the wildcard.

Best 3 LBs: Dansby, Burnett, Misi (who goes outside? Burnett and Misi I assume but are they capable and who is strong side?)

When will you guys learn we used both last year and like most teams we will use both this year. Situational, like most teams these days. It shouldn't even be a topic of discussion, its not one or the other, its both.

Of course but you have to look at it both ways to understand the true pressing needs of this team. It dictates if OLB or DT/DE is more pressing based on what the line up looks like in both D's.

What it looks like to us is not likely how it looks to the coaches. We have no idea what their evaluations are on the abilities of our current players nor the draft prospects. I hear you, you are curious, but we just don't have enough info to really make suggestions.

DB coach in cincy for many years but anyone know much about tgis cat? Any impressions?

The DC Kevin Coyle that is.

THIS TEAM IS A PATHETIC CLUSTER OF IMBECILES CLUTCHING FOR A CLUE..SCREW YOU MR ROSS..SCREW YOU IRELAND, YOU MISERABLE TERD. SHAME ON YOU.

Steve
I like the front 4. Don't forget mcdaniel. And I think we need to add another pass rushing DE but not necessarily a high round pick guy.
Probably another backer too. Wouldn't mind a higher round guy at that position.
I don't think DB is so dire either. I was reading Coyle was very good at getting the most out of his DBs in cincy. Top 5 in league in INTs. And getting "no name guys" to play very well. I'd like to think he can do the same here with our current unit.

Coyle cant make chicken salad out of chicken chit.

Hey bro,
Jets blog is around the corner. 3rd door on the left.
Later.

"Dolphins CB Jimmy Wilson has been moved to safety.
A hard-hitting corner out of Montana, Wilson saw reps at safety last training camp. New defensive boss Kevin Coyle has the 2011 seventh-rounder working with the second team, behind Reshad Jones and Chris Clemons."

Interesting.

Mando,

First off--You left out Tony McDaniel who is also a true DT in a 4-3.

As for Odrick I don't know if he's fast & athletic enough to get to the QB enough in a 4-3 defense. He's a DE in a 3-4 & a DT in a 4-3.

What? You are crazy or blind or both. Or maybe you know much less than you think you do.

Wilson showed potential as a rookie last year, especially coming out fo 7th rd.
I'm excited to see what this staff gets out of current these players.

Also you need a better name. That one is lame.

Odrick had 6 sacks playing half the time. He's quick enough.

WHDP....Where did you see the news about Wilson? IMO that is the right move for him. I have seen him cover bigger tight ends in college..Of course they are nowhere near the players we face in the division.. For Wilsons style of play, the move to saftey should be an easy transition(I hesitate to use transition, as it is his natural position)..I wonder if the move will eliminate the teams need to draft a saftey in this draft..

Another guy to watch out for as far as possible late round, or free agent camp longshot at the saftey position is SS Matt Johnson from EWU..Now that we can add an additional 10 bodies to the roster, he may be a guy that gets a look see...Check him out if you would like. He is the 4 year starter, team leader type the team has liked in the past(I understand the formula is far from bulletproof, I would imagine the criterea is similar in this draft as far as player evaluation goes)

I think odrick could fit in as DE as well in the 4-3. Im ready to see a lot of the pee wee herman dance!!!

It would be cool to see Armando's full mock draft for Miami before thursday.

BTW, after reading Dan Marino yesterday I'm already resigned to watch Dolphins pick Tanehill at 8th on thursday night. I only hope they give him an elite o-line plus an enhanced WR roster (he will need those things to have a real chance in the NFL).

Dolphins may also consider:

Bruce Irvin (OLB, 2nd round): productive pass rusher, fast and athletic guy similar to Cameron W.

Cam Johnson (DE, 3rd round): a decent alternative to rush the passer if Bruce Irvin is already gone by 3rd round and we still don't have a rusher.

James Brown (OG, 2nd round): Great OG, long-armed, almost as fast as Incognito in the running game.

Donald Stephenson (OT, 3rd round): fast, long-armed and athletic OT. He still needs some serious weightlifting though.

Taylor Thompson (DE/TE, 3rd round): productive tackler and highly athletic TE project.

Senio Kelemete (OG, 4th round): athletic OG.

Tom Compton (OT, 5th round): highly athletic OT.

Nick Toon (WR, 4th): strong, athletic possession WR.

Darryl Dumass,

Why dont you go to hell with your mountain conference scrubs. Every year we hear your bs about players from that peewee league. Let us know when a real players comes from there. We're not looking for high school players at this level.

TY, Darryl Needs To Take A Dump. If we need anymore crap out of you we'll squeeze your head!

That was unneccessary.

..Yg..Thats the best you got? No need to respond any more. You can keep attacking me, I could care less. Nothing to see here..Not worth the reponse.Going to keep taking the high road.

thavafin,

Yes it was, every year Darry "take a dump" Dunphy's trying to sell us on players no one has heard of nor cares about.

He's watching high school football in that peewee league conference and comes here virtually trying to sell us like they'll be all pros.

((5 of them are total p-o-s just like the guy falsely promoting them. Year after year its the same old bs from him.

Darryl dumpy,

I can tell by your posts you take the high road. Intensively pharmaceutically speaking.

YG
Who cares bro? What's he trying to sell "US"? We aren't drafting. We are discussing opinions. Ireland and Philbin don't give a crap about what any of us thinks they should do in the draft, nor should they.
You don't agree and that's cool but geez dude, take er easy.

Thavavin,

I dont like him. I think he's nothing but an overly conceited airbag that uses morals as his own personal drapes. That dude's more fake than a banana forest up a blind monkey's a--!

The Dolphins are the laughingstock of the league. Ross, SELL THE TEAM

Armando... Have you noticed how many bloggers Ohio Dolfan is stealing from you? Click on his name and you will see. I'm sure he'd be happy to have you join his blog as well.

If the Fins make you that unhappy maybe it's time to switch teams or find another interest. Life's too short to torture yourself.

Fair enough YG
What's sweet is that in about 48 hours we are going to begin finding out exactly what the dealio is.
Mini camp starting
Draft starting
Training camp on the way
Is it August yet!?!?

..Blog. I am not going to to ruin the content here by getting into a name calling pissing match..nobody wants to read it, and it does no good..YG, if it makes you feel better to single me out, or you don't like what I have to say..That is up to you. I'm not here for that.

As far as my comments on players in the Big Sky conference goes. I only comment on them because I know them well. Have ACTUALLY SEEN THEM PLAY. I don't get my information from a highlight reel, or from another source..They are my observations. These players are longshots for the most part. You can choose make your own decisions about them. If you do not like the posts, feel free to ignore them..No biggie. I'm not the only person in the world that knows about these players..Real NFL teams even ours scout them, have shown interest. The 3 guys I talked about from the conference were all drafted last year..2 were hurt, and 1 Jimmy Wilson looks like he may be a pretty good player for us. You have to realize the Dolphin scouts are at these schools at these games scouting these same players..If you think this is bogus, or boring, or B.S.. that is up to you.

YG, one seriously disturbed dude. Maybe his wife is to gross to screw and none of the fine specimens will even look at him.

YG what the heck makes your endless repetitive rants so interesting? Nothing. You repeat yourself ad nauseam here and change your mind more than a fickle old hag.

The quarterbacks-- David Garrard and Matt Moore -- split the reps "almost dead even" Philbin said and Wednesday Pat Devlin will get more work.

Is it possible we can get your take on the Moore/Garrard competition? Did they no toss the ball around today?

You have to be a sado masochist to be a Dolfan fan these days. They're just horrible.

Just to be clear, this was directed at bitter old man YG with the scagly wife.

At least Omar Kelly gave round 1 to Garrard. Why won't you tell us what actually happened today in football speak?

Omar Kelly quote: -- "I'm gonna have to give day 1 to David Garrard"

I tawt I saw a putty cat. I did, I did. I did saw a putty cat. LOL

Garrard has zero chance to beat Moore out.

Sylvester,

Are you suffering short dick syndrome again? I thought you had that taken care with male gender change operation. LOL

Here is a little action from someone else about Moore and Garrard.

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2012/04/miami-dolphins-quarterback-battle-begins.html

1. Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
2. Ronnell Lewis, LB, Oklahoma
3. Juron Criner, WR, Arizona
3. Jake Bequette, DE, Arkansas
4. Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa or Tommy Streeter, WR, The U
5. Desmond Wynn, OG, Rutgers
6. Olivier Vernon, LB, The U
7. Adrien Robinson, TE, Cincy
UND: Matt Merletti, S, UNC

If I could trade up to yield another 3/4th rounder I'd do it for Antonio Allen, S, South Carolina but if Merletti can stay healthy is a steal.

I tawt I saw a putty cat. I did, I did. I did saw a putty cat. LOL

Typical YG, avoid the truth and try to tease. I think that putty cat was the dried up old beaver that sleeps with him LOL

Just to be clear, this was directed at bitter old man YG with the scagly wife.

Bill Parcells is trying to get to draft Brock Osweiller by continiously comparing him as a football version of Wilt Chamberlain.

Please dont listen Jeffy, Parcells drafted Henne. LOL

I took this right off of NFL.com. they ran a mock of all 7 rounds (every pick). Here's what they came up with for us. I know the Tannehill haters wil hate this but I'd actually be pretty happy with this haul. Tannehill aside, I'd be curious what you guys think.:

Miami Dolphins
1 (8) Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
2 (42) Andre Branch, DE, Clemson
3 (72) Brandon Brooks, OG, Miami (OH)
3 (73) Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
4 (103) Brandon Hardin, S, Oregon State
5 (145) Rhett Ellison, TE, USC
6 (196) Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego State
7 (215) Toney Clemons, WR, Colorado

..Craig M..I like Sanu in the 3rd round. My thought is that will a rookie be able to do what Brandon Marshall did for the corps of recivers this year? Not so much total catches..but just attention. Like him or hate him. Marshall did was the one guy who would draw coverages away from other recievers. Who is going to be that guy for us? I think this was an under-rated under-appreciated part of Marshalls game this team is going to miss. Sure his attitude, his petulance will not be missed. But if none of our recievers scare anyone to make them draw up coverages for them..It is going to make the job of the offensive line even tougher...

I undrstand that in the best case scenario the team can develop a guy to take this role on...I just wonder who it will be?

You guys follow this stuff closer than I do. What about this Samu Kendricks kid from Boise State? Looks like he has off the charts speed despite being smallish. Later round project for somebody?

DD,

No question there is a new for a guy like Sanu. There's probably a few guys that could do this job, as WR seems to be pretty deep this year. Probably not realistic to expect him to do what Marshall did last year but it would be nice if he could cause some worries for the defence, even if it's only as a decoy.

Should have said 'need' for a guy like Sanu. sorry.

Well, you just never know with these draft picks. Some of them will make it and some won't. Always been that way and I guess it always will.

Some years, you really do well and others you don't. Even in the first round, everybody has hits and misses. Same every year.

Who knows this year. Some will make it and some won't. Just like any year. Far back as I can remember it's been that way.

And then sometimes you find guys in the later rounds who surprise. Happens every year. Just like some of the can't miss guys DO miss. Same story every year and as far back as I can remember.

We'll see what happens. It'll be hit or miss like always.

Is it Sanu Kendricks? I thought it was Samu, sorry.

I wonder what the over/under is in Vegas on Mel Kiper, Jr. busting a blood vessel during the draft this year? And, the odds that it'll happen when Miami picks at number eight? Hmm...

I wanted to sing 'In the Ghetto' for you fellas, but unfortunately my head fell off my rotting corpse when I tried to gat out of this damn coffin.

Pretty fun contest over there. Gives you a chance to pick the first round. Winner gets tickets to the Super Bowl. Seeing as I told you guy about it, if you win then you've got to take me with you to the big game...LOL. Give it a spin.

Typical YG, avoid the truth and try to tease. I think that putty cat was the dried up old beaver that sleeps with him LOL.
Posted by: Sylvester | April 24, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Yeah, I confess it's true. Youre my illegitmate son and Im still sneaking around with your mother. LOL

..Craig.. That was kind of my point. Marshall was a great "decoy" Having him out there made it easier for the other guys to get open. Remember 2 years ago when Marshall got hurt? Nobody could get open...They all struggled. Was that circumstance, or was there a reason? I don't expect anyone to match the catches this year..I also do not expect for the offense to take full shape overnight. There will be a learning curve. How long this takes? I don't know.

I'll even give you guys the first pick to get you started because that's the kind of guy I am. Andrew Luck first to the Colts.

There you go. You'll need to do the other 31 on your own.....

Uh-oh, Indy's no longer taking Luck, CraigM just agreed with 10 million other journalists. Surely something will now go wrong.

Welcome to Indy RG3! LOL
