Philbin talks to fans, preaches faith

Joe Philbin spent 45 minutes this evening on a conference call with Miami Dolphins season ticket customers. He took their questions. The media was allowed to listen but was kept at the kiddie table playing with our crayons. (In other words, we were asked to keep quiet).

Anyway, these are the highlights of what Philbin said in response to fans questions:

Mauricio in Miami-Dade asked Philbin to convince him that the Dolphins are worthy of investing in. The fan asked for Philbin's best halftime speech to motivate him to buy tickets.

"My experience is that with every successful organization in any sport you have to have good people," Philbin said. "You have to have faith and confidence in those people. I have great confidence in [owner] Steve Ross and [general manager] Jeff Ireland. Sometimes you just have to have faith.

"I'm asking for your faith and confidence that I'm going to be able to deliver results."

Philbin didn't offer too many specifics about, well, anything because he probably cannot and probably doesn't want to with what he can. But he was clear on his intended use of Reggie Bush.

Unlike last year when Miami mostly used Bush as a traditional running back until very late in the season, Philbin said his staff will try to maximize Bush. He mentioned using him at wide receiver. He mentioned using him in different formations. He mentioned doing things to create mismatches, which is what I thought Miami would do last year.

"We're not just going to hand the ball to him," Philbin said.

Speaking of wide receiver, Philbin obviously included the position among those needing upgrade. He mentioned wide receiver in the draft, along with quarterback, pass-rusher, defensive back. But it was interesting to me he referred to improving the position through free agecy and the draft. Free agency seems pretty much over to me as there is not a great amount of great talent left out there that I know of. He obviously knows more. Maybe he has something up his sleeve ... I hope.

Philbin mentioned the QB position a couple of times. Shocking right? IF you're a Dolphins quarterback you better be getting in your playbook because one aspect of the coming quarterback competition between Matt Moore and David Garrard is learning the West Coast offense and more specifically the Dolphins' version of the offense.

Philbin made the point that one way he'll be looking for the quarterback to "separate themselves" from on another is by more quickly learning the system and showing coaches they can be comfortable in the system.

Philbin was Green Bay's offensive coordinator but he didn't call the plays. He won't call them in Miami, either. "Mike Sherman will call the game," Philbin said. "I get to put in one play per week but I don't get to call it."

I'm confident he was kidding there as coach has something of a sense of humor. Philbin made the point Miami's offense will be a collaborative effort.

I see you are going to defend your boyfriend Tom Brady to the very end.

Gisele and ALoco in a cat fight.

Only in Massastupids.

brady isnt close to 6 time mvp. and 5 out of last 12 years isnt even half of 12. so not close to every year

So we get to see reggie lining up in the slot motioning out of the backfield catching screens and terrorizing linebackers in the flats? I for one cant wait. As far as free agents miami has 7 mill or so left and that is mostly going to sign rookies and injury emergency fund so miami is stuck right now. Either someone(s?) Restrctures or domebody is getting cut. Trading block might have a dolphin or two on its list soon.

RICH,,,,,,, TRY TO BE REAL..............

ALoco - answer the question.

The Dolphins are a cespool for scrubs.

Posted by: MJ | April 04, 2012 at 12:02 AM

And you are leading by example.

Flynn was the only one we had a real chance to sign and we said no to him . Haurbaugh lives very close to 9ers facilities and his wifeLOVES cali. We never had a chance. And who is to say he succeeds here like he did there? That D is loaded and the O finally had a coach they wanted to produce for. Fisher had no intention of signing here and im glad. 3 yards and a cloud of dust no thanks.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! WE'RE SICK AND TIRED OF LOSING! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

Wake me up next time a new hc comes in and tells a fanbase things are going to get much worse under his new regime. Until this happens, its all just recycled jibberish.

I guess he did tell us to expect to see Reggie Bush used more like Roger Craig. Who would have thought it being this is the wco system, right? LOL

Yesterday's Gone--

I am looking forward to our trip to IKEA tomorrow to buy a chair.

I think Philbin will finally bring stability, a culture, and a tradition back to the Dolphins. Something that has been missed since Shula left. I know a majority of fans are still screaming because of the last 12 years of irrelevance (except in 2008). Give Philbin a chance this year, are we re-building, sort of, we are installing a new Offense and Defense and Philbin has already had Ross set-up the Locker rooms, meeting rooms, and weight rooms to provide that atmosphere of being a team.

I've always wanted a West Coast Offense (WCO) installed since Marino left, now you will see how effective a WCO can be. You only need one speed receiver to stretch the field (R. Wallace or someone in the draft); Bess and Hartline are perfect for this Offense; Bush will be a nightmare by moving him around (Think Roger Craig) in this offense. The way Green Bay runs their offense (the same way I believe Philbin will run his version) is more like the old Bill Walsh - 49er type offense. Shannahan and Holmgren run their offenses a little differently, even though they come from the old Bill Walsh WCO tree.

I believe we picked the right coach to start a new era by having just one coach for a while since the Shula days. So welcome coach Philbin and let the Philbin era begin in Miami!!!

WIN, LOOSE, OR TIE... DOLPHINS TILL I DIE!!! (since 1980)

Hopefully you can raise the cumulative I.Q. of the discussion.

Now...

Lets hope that the Dolphins have a decent Draft and get a Franchise Quarterback, a bad @ss Middle Linebacker and a future star Receiver.

We can all hope that....Can't We?

Fire Jeff Ireland...

Philbin's wants us to have "faith" in Ross and his retarded monkey Ireland?
Who is delusional now?

Geez...this is such a fun blog..... ;-)

Glad that We're amusing you Buster :)
.
.

I believe we can upgrade WR either with Michael Floyd at 1st round or Tommy Streeter at 2nd-3rd, what do you guys think about them? any more interesting prospects out there???

People come on...where is the loyalty? YEs the moves or lack there of is a lil scary but im a true fan of football and a phin4eva.I like our new head coach ,i like the staff i think they are more proven in winning and coaching. This is how i view the dolphins. Jeff ireland has always made smart early picks some would say safe but pouncey ,long, odrick( who needs to step up).Everyone forgets we got a 2nd rd guy daniel thomas and a wr in gates who will step up we got picks 8,42,72,73 that looks pretty good to a football junkie like myself we just gotta draft smart .And to all the fans if we take tannehill hes probably worth it remember sherman coached him so he knows right now if hes the guy (franchise)

Let's talk about yeast infections!

People, temper your enthusiasm with a dose of financial reality. Crystal ball (aka common sense) says 5-11 at best but most likely 4-12 and last in the division. That said, I hope I'm wrong, stranger things have happened. Oh, and just be prepared to drink more during the games, it will make it much easier to handle. Especially when Sparano and the stinkin Jets defeat the FINS, twice, aided greatly by Tebowmania and The Wildcat...I'm just sayin

Miami Dolphins= Perpetually Rebuilding :(

Whatever with all u guys the dolphins are going yo kick some assess!!!

Tarmo babata rugo. KAGA HANO PU!

Linbaba klazo? KOMRAY!

There are 11 different things that need to happen this year. If they happen we will do well. It is possible all 11 will happen. I know this to be true.

Man I can't wait for the Dolphins to draft a new punter and his family with our first round pick!!! Given what we know of Jeff Ireland, I expect no less!!

Giants stink & FLPD = Armando

Hello 2007 Cam Cameron all over again.

Philpin trusts Ireland? What? I guess Philpin missed that fupas when Ross along with Ireland, "sneaked thiefed", off to San Fran to hire ole "whats his name" as head coach, with Dolphin head coach Sparano at home watching TV. Well, that was easy to miss.
Philpin being the good soldier, id keep my eye on Mr Ireland and especially if he has an armed wrapped around your shoulder. Make sure its only one arm at a time,,,food a thought.

I hope he doesn't pull a Whinny and kill the RB. At least Ricky could take the abuse..

"Because he has never been a head coach?"

Long list of those, including Bill Walsh, who did just fine.

May the lord save our season. We will need divine intervention if he thinks we are going to build with free agency. Maybe he can find a scrub who is actually a diamond that needs a chance to shine. It sucks being on the West coast and having charger and raider fans bad mouth the team and all you can do is agree. Give us something to brag about. PS: Baylor Women 2012 went 40-0 so hats off to them for being Undefeated.

Why is it the new trend that people think Philbin will be the next Cam Cameron?

What are the similarities? They both were OC's? Other than that?

Not sure where that is coming from.

Try this experiment.

Read any of your posts from a week back or more. Any of you. Then you will see how stupid you and everybody else is. Just blab of meaningless and misguided opinions based on no first hand knowledge or understanding of anything.

Shortly after the last SB, Coughlin explained in an interview how coaching is not what you think it is. When he said you, he meant you, all of you. Neither is being a GM anything like you arm chair divine experts think it is.

Faith Thats really reaching don you think

Title of this blog "Philbin talks to fans, preaches faith"

You can replace Philbin with Sparano (this team will win), Cameran (fall on your face fast), Saban (believe in the system), JJ (I'm God), and most likely the next 3 coaches.

Philbin smells of the Cam Cameron disaster of 2007 all over again.

Kumba YA my fins Kumba YA

Blab On | April 04, 2012 at 09:00 AM

Yes, I would agree.

It's not about the speeches, it's about the results. I'm sure Coughlin gave the exact same types of speeches last year too, and they won the superbowl.

Fact is 31 coaches will give a speech like this for 2012 and ultimately fail at their top goal of the Super Bowl.

Give the guy a chance

Mando I dont understand why you dont understand that free agency is not over. THere is free agency, the draft and more free agency. Did we get Chad Pennington in April?? No we got him in training camp. Teams are going to draft players and then release more veteran players who are on the bubble. With the depth at WR in this draft there are going to be pretty good players getting released after the draft. Come on man your better than that!

I really can't believe that fans are already down on Philbin. He deserves a chance, which means he deserves 3-5 years. This guys has worked his way up through various levels of football to get here. He wasn't the first choice, sure everyone knows that.

But he is here now and he deserves the full support of the Fins community. Why be down on him now? He has brought in solid guys for OC and DC. He kept Rizzi who showed real progress last year for our Special Teams. He is passionate about only keeping high integrity guys. He is passionate about his offensive system and is currently planning/working to bring in players that fit it.

What exactly has he done wrong? Give him your support. It's amaziing what might happen if the Fins fan base actually rallied around a guy. JJ was the last coach that received support. I say lets give our support to Joe!

Mando, thank you for the post. I'm surprised that philbin didn't mention o-line as a postion of need in your report. I think that was our biggest issue last year. that and pass rush

From Nleacherreport

As for Flynn, in that same phone call Ross made to a season-ticket holder, he acknowledged that the reason the Dolphins didn't sign Matt Flynn was because they didn't really want him.

Yet that's contradicted by Joe Philbin himself when he spoke to the media on 3/27/12:

"I think we made an aggressive push. We got him in here relatively quickly. Again, we had a great meeting. Matt and I had some conversations, a number of conversations prior to his arrival to Miami. We had some subsequent ones after. He’d probably be able to give you better answer as to why he chose to go elsewhere."

So Stephen Ross claims the Dolphins chose not to sign Flynn, while his head coach is saying that Flynn could give the media a better answer as to why HE chose to go elsewhere!

wwell thats true. if the money was the same flynn would of choosen miami over seattle. im glad we didnt pay him

Arando -Again you sound like a child which is half the reason you get treated like a child. "kiddie table", "crayon's"? No wonder the Phins FO gives you nothing except the secret texts they want you to have and no wonder why the national media goes to the Sentinnel for their "inside" beet questions. What happend to you?
