Preview of the Dolphins offensive scheme

I've got a day off today but decided because I have some time to myself to (again) check out the Ryan Tannehill quarterback camp segment with former coach Jon Gruden. I'm glad I did.

The 25-minute tape below is interesting on many levels. It suggests Tannehill's work at Texas A&M was much more NFL intensive than the typical college approach. That's very good.

It shows why Tannehill will be ahead of veterans David Garrard and Matt Moore in his knowledge of the offense. (He's way behind in on-field experience against NFL competition but ahead in understanding the terminology and concepts of the offense he's running).

And, most interesting to me, it gave me something of a peek at the offense the Dolphins will run. Most believe Miami's offense will be the Green Bay Packers offense. Um, actually, it'll be more West Coast offense used at A&M with some Green Bay concepts added in. It is not the Green Bay offense per se.

So what will you decipher in this episode that will apply to the Miami offense. Examples:

It will show you the Dolphins future personnel groupings.

There is Eagle: Four wide receiver and a back.

There is Zebra: Three wides, a tight end and a back.

"That was our base personnel that this year we ran 90 percent of our stuff out of," Tannehill said.

There is Tiger: Two tight ends, two wide receivers, one back.

There is Y: Three tight ends, one back and one wide receiver. In this one the Aggies sometimes used the tight end as a fullback.

I'm confident the Dolphins will have the same groupings because West Coast offenses have had these grouping dating back 20 years.

They've also used the same hand signals for these grouping for 20 years. The Eagle is denoted by flapping of the arms. The Zebra is denoted by putting an arm across the body as in a stripe. The Tiger is denoted by holding up both hands like claws.

You will see Tannehill asked to name 15 formations. He names 12: Stack right, stack right plus, stack right minus, Trips left, Star left, Star right, Trey left, Trey right, Squeeze, Tight right, Stack right snug, Stack right Z short.

A typcial West Coast offense call that will soon make its way to a Dolphins huddle near you: "Ground left tight close halfback right sprint right Z corner halfback flat."

The Dolphins, er Aggies, made a lot of hay on outside breaking routes. Look for the Dolphins to make a lot of hay on outside breaking routes. There are three kind:

Acute.

Winston.

True comeback.

The Acute and true comeback are comeback routes. The Winston is an out route.

Acute goes 14 yards coming back to 12 yards. It is a five-step drop and a hitch for the QB. Out of the shotgun it is a three-step drop and hitch.

True comeback goes 18 yards back to 16. It is a seven-step drop for the QB. Out of the shotgun it is a five-step and hitch.

The Winston is a 10- to 12-yard out route. It requires a five-step-plant-and-throw motion from the QB. Out of the shotgun it is three-step-plant and throw.

Look for the Dolphins, like any West Coast team, to depend heavily on the Acute route. Tannehill clearly has a very strong arm in that he often threw Acutes to the wide side of the field in college. Not everyone can make that throw.

One problem with this route?

The wide receiver has to win. Herein lies the importance of the wide receiver that I feel the Dolphins have not full address, but that's another blog. The wide receiver must get the cornerback out of his pedal for the route to work. That means the wide receiver must threaten the defensive back to the point where he turns his hips to run. At that point the receiver is free to make his break and the play is an easy completion.

But if the receiver cannot make the defensive back get out of his backpedal, the defensive player is in perfect position for the interception. Along the sideline. With open field in front of him. The wide receiver MUST win. Or the quarterback cannot throw the football in that situation and must settle for the checkdown.

Tannehill failed to settle for the checkdown a couple of times in college and it cost him.

Did I mention the wide receivers must win and force the DBs out of their pedal?

Anyway, enjoy:

When you live in the basement, its foolish to glorify the house before you seen it.

I've seen a few basements in my lifetime. Its not all mansions above the basement. Sometimes its a shack.

Reggie will be lining up as a WR a fair amount in this offense that's one thing most of the media and fans don't realize.

JackSparrow - The draft is about as far as the cheering goes. Once the season goes to sh** by week 5 every year, then everyone starts looking forward to the draft again. Visicious cycle in S. Fla.
So, as you can see/read the draft was and is the fins playoffs, exciting, right.
And technically Mando should have every day off work. There has been nothing even vaguely remotely worth writing about since the day Marino retired!

@Ted

That's my point. I am conditioned to expect the worse from this team. Years and years have gone by with nothing but the worse coming to fruition.

I'm not going to get my hopes up for a REACH pick in the draft. That pick should have been a solid pick but it was a reach. A gamble at #8!

No one knows what this kid is going to do against Revis Island and Mario Reef. And no one knows if he can come back against Tom Terrific.

Nobody is crowning them. We are saying that Ireland had a good draft and there is genuine excitement in the new coaching staff and the new rookies we acquired. That's not crowning them that's being a real fan of the team you root for. Try it sometimes a little optimism goes a long way.

Wally agree, Reggie will never come off the field. I'm sure he can play well at WR sets.

I refuse to get my hopes up about this team. Too many let downs.

Y'all can hype up this team (sight unseen) all you want to.

I refuse until they actually do something. Call me fair weather all you want to. But at least I won't need an umbrella after the weatherman lied to me.

Lied to me again and again and again.

131fins.. That is my thought. It is within reason to believe Bush will be targeted 5-6 times a game. Used in the slot, even split wide out of motion. I was suprised the team didn't use him like this last year. Also, If Tannehill does become the starter at some point next year. How many times will we be throwing it? Best case scenario around 20-25 times a game until he proves he can handle more. So how many of those passes are going to be to wide recievers?

Yes, fun to be excited for draft. However, analyzing the picks, saying good or bad, a total waste of time. Nothing to start getting excited excited about until any Fins team starts a season at least 5-1. Which is next to never. Short of that, forget it.

I remember last year, all these (alleged) writers were stoked for Henne and Marshall etc. thinking playoffs. I laughed at that time too.

Also exciting is laughing at Mando's (alleged) articles.

I know the pain you feel with this team sparrow. I have been a fan for 38 years and aside from Marino this team has never given me much joy. I use to take losses and drafts hard when I was younger; however I'm just plain sick of the unfair bashing by the national media and some of our own fans. This is Irelands 2nd draft without the big smelly tuna making the calls, give the coach and the players a chance. It's a new regime with new players. One who is always looking for flaws leaves too little time for construction.

Here is what's funny. New England had the worst defense in the league last year. They won the divsion correct?

We drafted 6 of 9 offensive players. Who knows what we got after that. Only way to stop New England is to stop their offense right? So why draft 6 of 9 offensive players instead of 6 of 9 defensive players?

I'm tired of trying to copy other teams. It can't be done like that! The players on Green Bays team and the Patriots team are NOT the same players on Miami's team.

All Ireland is doing is trying to copy an established brand name. That's like me mixing up a batch of soda in my basement and calling it Koke.

It doesn't work like that folks! All Ireland has been doing is trying to copy what someone else did.

This is a legit scenario.

Let's say the weatherman says its gonna be clear skys for the next 6 days.

But every day it rained.

Y'all telling me you would trust the weatherman on the 7th day?

Have faith in Kevin Coyle he has worked wonders with less talented secondary's than we have here in Miami. I believe he will make our players a ton better then the previous coaching staff.

nice job mando. I'm sure these guys think our WR position is ok or they would have drafted someone.

@tedisamoron

Ted is not a moron, with all of Ted's Fins knowledge and NFL knowledge Ted has over the past 35 years, these S. fla newspapers would be honored to hire Ted as a writer. Generally, people flock to these blogs to hear Ted's thoughts on the Fins year in and year out. Ted speaks the truth, not regurgetated b.s.

And yes, Ted has now spoken in the third person.

Another hater of the truth, probably one of the Henne lovers of last year, Ya gonna follow that future Pro Bowler to Jax, LOL

Once again Jack Sparrow I fail to understand why you talk about or root for the Dolphins. If you have no faith and are going to wait until they win what's the point in coming in here?

What's the point? Every one of your posts reads like a recruitment into the lets all hate our Dolphins club. What are you trying to do in here?

You never say a good word about one thing this team does. If someone who never watched american football met you they would think you were a Jets, Pats, or Bills fan. They wouldn't understand how you could possibly find nothing good in the very team you root for.

I don't understand why you come in here is all. What are you trying to convince everyone of? It seems like you want us all to hate our team? Or you just don't want any of us to have any hope at all for the upcoming season?

Jack we understand the team isn't the best, they are mediocre AT BEST. That's what they have shown us for a while now, no one is arguing that. But to be a fan you HAVE to have hope every time a new season comes around. Teams have come out of nowhere to make the playoffs, hell we did it 2 years ago. Who thought the Jets were going to the AFC Championship 2 years in a row? Yeah chances are the Dolphins will miss the playoffs, that's the safe bet. But we are all hoping for something better and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some stranger take that hope away from me.

I'm just trying to understand your angle here because it doesn't make sense. If you think the Dolphins are so bad that there is no hope then coming in here daily to say so is a big waste of time right?

Tannehill week 1 starter book it

Y'all telling me you would trust the weatherman on the 7th day?

What does the weather have to do with football or the Dolphins? Because they tell us they're going to the super bowl every year? No one has said they're world beaters, everyone is just hoping for the best.

So in your scenario the funny thing is, YOU KEEP TUNING IN TO LISTEN TO THE SAME WEATHERMAN WHO WAS WRONG FOR 6 DAYS. What you should do is stop watching that station, stop writing on their blog, and find a new weatherman to watch. Am I wrong? I mean you brought up the scenario so if it were me, the weatherman sucked that bad, I WOULD STOP LISTENING TO HIM AND FOLLOWING HIS STATION. You know what I mean?

Don't keep looking for excuses just find a new weatherman. There are plenty out there, no need to keep repeating the same mistake over and over. No?

Jack please don't disappear on me again. You wanted to talk about this so lets go. I have all the answers you're looking for and hopefully you can help me understand what you get from being a fan of the Miami Dolphins. Certainly there must be a reason you keep rooting and keep coming in here to talk.

"I got enamored last August", Ireland in reference to Tannehill. And Ireland expresses himself that way? He must not have studied in SoFla. What you think, ALoco?

Hey Armando, be careful what you post. Remember LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS!

Salguero, thanks to posting this video. Tannehill looks to be a smart QB, a leader, and a hard working guy. He's ambicious, but respectful. I understand now Sherman's opinion about this guy.
On the field, he looks pretty good too.

Now, as concerns the WR, we can speculate a lot about them, but no one but the coaches know exactly what our WR can do. Moreover, Tannehill, as WR will demand a lot from them. So, perhaps the game plan with Sparano was not as demanding as the current one, and so WR were not doing their best.
I'm pretty confident that our WR will end up manage the routes. They got 3 months to practice.
Now, in case the WR end up messing up everything, then next year the Dolphins will draft two of them in the first rounds.

Like it or not, this is a completely new team, as concerns coaches, and game plans. Therefore, we have no other than be patient again. But Ireland's clock will be running, that's for sure. If the Dolphins don't finish at least 8-8 this season and 11-5 at least next one all this will be a complete waste of time.
My prediction is 9-7.

Ted same goes for you. You seem to have the same exact view points as your friend Jack Sparrow so what gives. What are you getting out of the experience of rooting for the Dolphins and blogging about them? Nothing right, that's what you're saying? So why fill the blogs with post after post of negative opinions? You're not making a difference at all. Well unless you're trying to help everyone in the Dolphins organization keep their jobs. Because I'm sure you know the more fans talk about the team, the more fans they have, the better they think they're doing as an organization. So you and Jack are actually helping the Dolphins franchise become more popular. Unless of course you think Jeff Ireland or any of the players actually read this stuff and care what we think. You don't believe that for a second right?

Right. So thank you for your continued efforts in filling the Dolphins blogs with hits, you're helping to make them more popular and you're helping Ireland keep his job. Way to go guys! Thanks!

Heck, as a kid I had this confessor priest and he wanted to touch my dikkie, man.(in one of those expensive Catholic schools in Cuba, man)

tedisamoron you have to post under that same name from now on. If you're a regular in here you shouldn't change your name to debate people, just keep the same name.

But if you're new please keep posting under that name or else someone (cough cough Aloco COUGH COUGH) will accuse me and every other person with a brain of being you. No one backs up there opinions and thoughts in here. We have very few men and a lot of little frightened boys.

So please use the same name from now on for the good of the blog. This site has the best set up on the net the only thing missing is a sign up section. We should all have to sign up and choose a name. That would make this the best blog on the net. But unfortunately that would probably also chase away people who are scared to back their opinions and the blog would take a hit for a while. When the season got rolling, if we had this new sign in set up, this would without a doubt be the best place to talk Dolphins.

And even the super negative people would be awesome because they would be posting under the same name and we would know they were legit. They could say, "see I told you so" if something didn't work out and we (the objective)could do the same. I know I'm dreaming, never going to happen. BUT KEEP THAT NAME PLEASE!? :)

Sigh, why do these people disappear every time I come in? I just want to understand the logic. I'm not going to get mean or call you names. We can have an adult conversation and try to figure out each others reasoning. I just read through pages of two people asking questions, I would like to answer them but they left,,,,AGAIN. It happens every time. Come on Jack, help me to understand like you were doing with everyone the past few pages. I'm sincerely interested in figuring this out.

U got it. Not a big regular, but huge fan.

Never really blog too much as work day is too long. Appears to be some interesting characters. I am like the long time watcher first time blogger. I feel it will be my last. I have read this Jack guy, he is not a true fan. I am bitter about things, but I am a die hard Fins fan. A lot of blowhards here. I realize it is for hits, and of course other teams fans are dogging the Dolphins.

Okay, maybe you're eating dinner, I'll check back in a little bit. Jack seriously not trying to fight so don't get bent all right? Just trying to understand is all.

If they run the offense form the spread & shotgun formation that will put Tannehill on the field sooner than later. He is the only QB on the roster physically qualified to pull it off on a consistant basis. Liked how Gruden stressed progression read & identifying DB posture to know whether or not to throw the out pattern.

tedisamoron, I wouldn't blame you for not coming back. I wouldn't either if this were my first time in here. But the funny thing is it's soooooo bad I can't even trust that you are new to writing in here. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all new bloggers but people in here constantly change names and use different personalities,,,I know,,,, crazy right? So it's hard to trust anyone until they post for a week or so using the same sign in. Even then it's hard to figure out who the real people are. lol

I posted an example ealier of why the Dolphins don't want a big name reciever.

I'm not saying I totally agree with their thinking, but it's the only thing that explains their recent dealings with the position.

They release a pro bowl reciever, albeit one with some personal issues. They make no real attempt to replace him or fortify the position through free agency or the draft.

Now some may say it was a deep draft, so the recievers we took late may have been higher draft choices in years past.

I don't buy that. I think if they truly wanted to upgrade the position, they would have taken one earlier.

Some might think they didn't sign any decent FA WR's because they were cap strapped. I don't buy that either.

We signed a DB, a LBer, and a guard who will probably never see the starting line up. I have to believe at least another reciever could have been signed along with Nanee with more upside than Wallace or Pruitt.

I hope that Philbin and Sherman don't turn out to be "Gruden like" (genius's in their own minds)and think they can out scheme their opponents irregardless of our talent.

All that being said, we have no choice but to wait and see how it all unfolds. The high paced, multi-formation offense, surely sounds more fun than 2 runs and a sack on 3rd and 9.

noted.

tedisamoron you have to post under that same name from now on.

............................................

What a tool. First he calls a blogger a name. Then comes back to say he doesn't do that. Just another dumb, hypocrite blogger.

Okay so on to football and no one is here so I'll eave it at this. When did Mel Kiper start acting like he knows what each team is doing and how the players will fit within their scheme? Has he always done this?

I know he's good at labeling talent (some say) and puts together a nice draft board. But now he's on ESPN ARGUING with former coaches about which players will fit onto which team! WTF? This guy has never played or coached in his life and he's telling coaches and players they're wrong about ,,,Yeah the guy is a windbag, I just can't understand why they have him on ESPN after the draft is over.

Also very surprised to see no one was mad at Armando for giving away secrets. I'm surprised but also proud of the blog because I thought for sure someone would yell at him for something as stupid as that. As I was reading I was sure it would happen but no one did, that's great. And shows people understand that Mando didn't give away any state secrets, these are all known facts about Sherms offense. And trust me when I say Belichick and his staff have been studying the Aggies offense since Sherm was hired.

Wop87 you're a coward. Be very proud. Can't even talk like an adult? Never said I've never called anyone a name, please show me where I said that. I said I didn't want to argue, not my fault you're to stupid to comprehend english. I called Aloco every name in the book, after being provoked. Ya see dummy, cause and effect. But I'm not going to waste my time arguing with you, not worth it. I asked you an adult question, you ran and hid and changed your name again. Pathetic. See ya!

The secrets are posted on youtube Phins, there is nothing secret in football anymore. I remember a game last year where the fins called the same play 3 times in a row, its up to the D to stop them. You can only call a half back dive to the right so many things, bottom line its a half back dive.... .

You gotta line up and smash mouth.

ESPN has ranked the Fins draft #31.

We'll see if they stink that bad two to three years from now.

By the way does anyone know how the 2010 draft has graded out?

the Fins have been like the movie Groundhog day since the blowout with Jax in 2000...62-7 if my memory is clear...Marinos last stand...Fiedler did win a playoff game but thats been it...now its the saviour Tannehills time in the barrel if you remember that old joke...I remember Wilson Jr. Wood Norton and Stofa that first year in 1966,,,screamed my lungs out at the Orange Bowl each week as we won 3 games that year...we averaged 25,000 a game back then...an embarrasment...6 years later we were unbeaten and the world loved us...I'll always be a Dolphin fan..its what I look forward to year in and year out...the man that brought class to Miami was Don Shula...he was run out of town by Jimmy Johnson and Wayne H....hopefully Philbin can bring back some class and winning ways to the Fins...I hope this is the year...I hope it every year...call me a homer if you will...I'm 61 and was born in Miami...the Dolphins are my only connection to my hometown..I read all the Blogs from Sun Sent., Palm Beach Post the Herald and Phinsider every day when I wake up...so much negativity it baffles me...If you lived through the first four years of Dolphin football you'd know how negativity feels...but I always loved my Dolphins..Lets get back on the track and root for our team and players....negative breeds negative ...positive breeds positive...for what its worth

Darryl,
i twice answered your post, and twice it was deep sixed. No idea why. Nothing dispariging, just my usual blah blah. Can't figure it out. Apologies. I don't even remember what i said, but im sure it was moaning about the WR corps.

Wow had some good reading over the weekend, seems we are back to trolls. ESPN can rank whatever they want. SOlid B in my eyes, one of the better drafts. Watched the youtube again on RT, man he is a mature kid, speaks well and with respect, and appears to have all the knowledge. At the very least we get ourselves the Z-receiver. ;-).

Armando,

The fact that you watched that 25 minute video and took away from it the need for receivers leaves me befuddled. If you didn't leave the video deeply impressed with who Ryan is and his potential for growth then we really don't see things in a similar way. You can't solve every issue at once. Focus on their current attempt and appreciate the possibilities. They deserve no less.
Warm regards,
Fish

Also very surprised to see no one was mad at Armando for giving away secrets. I'm surprised but also proud of the blog because I thought for sure someone would yell at him for something as stupid as that.

Maybe if you actually READ the blog instead of just annoying everybody you would have seen that NYG did complain about that very thing.

For a guy that writes so much you sure don't read much.

Thanks for posting this Armando.

I have been a bit of a skeptic of Tannehills. I am a lot less concerned as he is obviously a smart kid and an exceptional athlete.

I don't think the Dolphins have to worry about the purple dank with him.

What secrets? This thing is on YOU Tube, he just copied what Ryan said.

I have made it a point not to look at the draft grades because I don't wanna see the media crap.

The few that I seen by accident were ok though. I think it was cbssports that gave us a B.

I don't know where espn ranking us #31 would have came from. I didn't a hear whole of negative stuff from them during the draft. Screw em anyways.

Bottom line is your not gonna hear a whole lot positive until you start winning. Unless your New York or Boston that is.

Yeah I live in New England, love all the Boston teams cept pats. Iwant to see the fins win again, I barely remember their wins in superbowls.

There is no secrets anymore, Man.

I saw the Gruden segment with Tannehil. He is going to be the one. Unbelievable how smart this guy is. He is way ahead on the learning curve. Add to that his speed, size, accuracy and time spent as a wide reciever. This new offense is going to be fun to watch. It is going to be wide open pedal to the metal and attacking the defense. Can't wait. It may be awhile before Tannehil takes the reigns, but it will still be a welcome change.

man, so is Bob Kraft, man.

Stephen Brown, I was there in those old George WIlson days too!

armando, amazing how you watch a 25 min video and suddenly ur an offensive coordinator and wr coach...maybe the dolphins should hire you...do yourself and your blog followers a favor and stick to reporting what we don't know (we all have access to the same video)and stop your game film analysis, you're not a scout or play caller dude!

BOSTON HAVE THE BEST TEAMS IN SPORT HISTORY ,,,,,,,

NO TEAM IN MY TOWN HAS BEEN IN THE CELLAR SINCE 1768 .........

Loco and Oscar, who cares, send each other youe email or twitter accounts and talk to each other 9or yourself if you are one in the same).

It isn't a secret. I was thinking the same thing ct. Very impressive video I watched it a while back and out of all the interviews I came away the most impressed by Tannehill's QB camp w Gruden.

Espn is a bunch of Biased New yorkers... U wonder why we got a 31... It's a joke they call themselves reporters.

Ahh, ctphins also suspects that we are YG, JS and all the other little impostErs. Nahh, our Education prevents us from that.

Aloko,

What made you become a Dolphin fan????

B33, but you are behind. I knew that since last September.
