Ross hopes Tannehill's No. 17 will be retired

Retired numbers
The Dolphins have retired three jerseys since the franchise's fledgling year in 1966. And owner Stephen Ross is rooting that first-round pick Ryan Tannehill is so good, so dominant in fact, that his career will require the team to retire Tannehill's No. 17 when he's through.

"This is your number?" Ross asked Miami's newest quarterback this morning when he handed him his Miami jersey.

Tannehill responded that's exactly the number he wore at Texas A&M. Ross paused. Thought about it. And then said ..

"Hope one day we can retire this jersey."

The Dolphins have all three of their retired jerseys hanging in the lobby wall of their Davie, FL. headquarters. They belong to Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, and Dan Marino. All three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That is apparently what it takes to get your jersey retired by the Dolphins.

But no pressure, Ryan.

tony,

You're wasting your breath. If you don't have track stars running for you at WR, some of these think we have duds. They don't get that you can't have the same type of Wrs on your roster.

I know that we should have more than one wr on this roster than can get behind a cb and make the explosive play. Don't care what offensive system your running.

You shouldn't be barely over 6'0 and barely over 200lbs running a 4.6 forty. No cb's are waking up in cold sweats worrying about Brian Hartline and Devon Bess who disappeared have way thru the season and couldn't separate from coverage. Cunningham isn't lining up in the slot so why the slow footed x or y wr guru??? To run one route in the WCO???

Tell me how many Cunningham's we have in the NFL right now. At best, he turns out like Seattle's 2010 Mike Williams. Slow, but effective.

I will say that if Cunningham fits some role within the new "spread-like" offense then I understand. I was pleased with the TE pick, due to his speed and hands. Mismatches in the secondary is what we need to make "above average" receivers good. That is one way to do that.

I am pleased with the direction the Dolphins are FINALLY headed, but looking at the other teams in the AFC Easts draft we have fallen behind and face an uphill battle.

"finfan maybe?" Not sure if you knew this, but Michigan State is in the big ten...I pay attention to not only Ohio State, but the rest of the Big Ten.... Just adding my comments given what I have seen.

"NHFINSFAN",
Ron Dayne has the most rushing yards in college football history....your point??

Soooo...Stra...6'2"..200lbs..ran a 4.71 combine...I am guessing you do NOT want that guy then??? Cause several other GM's agreed with you...but not the 49er's who took some cat named Jerry Rice, and the rest is history..So now Bj sounds like a terrible pick?? His career totals are impressive: 51 games played, 218 receptions, 3,086 yards and 25 touchdowns. The yards and catches are school records, while the 25 touchdowns is only two behind Rogers' record of 27.

Cunningham has been the most consistent, sure-handed receiver for the Spartans over the last three years.

Why do GB's X and Y wr's both run sub 4.5 if we are running the same system and you don't need stretch wr's in the WCO. For some reason I remember GB completing alot of 9's and sluggos for big yardage. Who will do that for the FINS. Gates and..........Hartline LOL!

You aren't creating any mismatches if your wr's can't get separation on short or long routes. Not matter how slow you are....you just have to have a core full of unexplosive route runners to have an explosive offense. LOL!

Based on the analysis below, I'd say Ireland gets an A for this draft...I am happy as every area of need was addressed with CB probably coming in the 7th.

Round 1, Pick 8 (8)Ryan Tannehill-QB-6'4"-224

Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "I have him rated as the 19th best player in the draft, which tells you I don't think he's ready to be a heavy contributor this year. I watched every throw he made on tape this year. All the out-breaking routes are phenomenal. Where he gets in trouble are the in-breaking routes where he stares the receiver down, pats the ball and throws interceptions."

Round 2, Pick 10 (42)Jonathan Martin-OT 6'5",312

Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "First-round talent right here, tremendous arm length. I call him a little bit of a finesse player. Doesn't mean he's not tough, but he's so good with his feet and understands angles. I believe the Dolphins just got themselves a starter on either the right or left side."

Round 3, Pick 9 (72)Olivier Vernon-DE,6'2",261

Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "Out of all the underclassmen that came out this year, and I didn't think many should have, Vernon is one that I banged the table for. He's a solid 4-3 defensive end who can get edge pressure on the quarterback."

Round 3, Pick 15 (78)Michael Egnew-TE,6'5",252

Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "When you think Missouri tight end, you think freakish athlete who doesn't block. Well, this is true again. He can really run, and he's a natural hands catcher."

Round 4, Pick 2 (97)Lamar Miller-RB,5'11",212

Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Miller gives the Dolphins a home run threat in the backfield. He is explosive with the ball in his hands and displays outstanding burst when running on the perimeter. Miller needs to show better toughness in pass protection, but could develop into a dynamic weapon as a situational playmaker.

Round 5, Pick 20 (155)Josh Kaddu-LB,6'3",239

Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Kaddu is an athletic linebacker with speed and quickness. He excels in a "run and chase" scheme that allows him to use his speed to harass running backs at the second level.

Round 6, Pick 13 (183)B.J. Cunningham-WR,6'1",211

Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Cunningham is an underrated pass catcher with skills. He is a good route runner with savvy and quickness and could make immediate contributions as a third or fourth receiver.

Ohiophin,

Talking about other teams in our division. The Bills took TJ Graham with the 6th pick in the 3rd rd.

He was projected even lower than Cunningham.

Olympia...do you realize there is a reason Cunningham was drafted after Martin?? Martin was the more explosive...more clutch...more sure handed player of the 2. You can't compare every wr who runs slow to Jerry Rice. There is only one Jerry. Why are the top wr's in the NFL this day an age those who can get vertical and have good to great speed. The one exception is Wes Welker. Calvin Johnson....Andre Johnson.Hakeem Nicks..big ...fast...short....deep....explosive

Nix or Washington would be a good pickup for RG. Nix fell cuz of injury not sure why washington fell

Different sport, I know, but sweet Jesus what a butt kicking the Heat just put on New York in that 2nd quarter! That was some of the kmost dominant basketball I've EVER seen!

TJ Graham faster...more sudden...must better athlete with solid hands. Bills..JETs....Pats(added Lloyd) wr core > than Fins.

OlympiaPHINFan,

This is why I don't post on this forum pretty much ever. Ignorance is the norm. You point out Jerry Rice as an exception to the rule, but you fail to mention the hundreds before and after him that have failed. I bet your retirement savings consists of purchasing lotto tickets. No offense, but generalizations get you somewhere -- if you are lucky (Jerry Rice).

I never said Cunningham was a bad receiver. Quite the contrary, he is sure handed and a "safe pick". I think Ireland has done a great job in this draft. This is the only pick I have a slight issue with. Streeter was available and available very very late. The risk/reward is better to me.

LET ME TELL YOU WHAT YOU PEOPLE ARE MISSING, THE WCO IS ABOUT ATTACKING THE MIDDLE WITH SLANT OR Z ROUTES, THUS MAKING THE DEFENSE WORRY ABOUT THE MIDDLE AND THUS OPENING UP THE OUTSIDE WITH DECEPTIVE PLAYERS LIKE J. NELSON IN GREEN BAY. A VERTICAL OFFENSE IS ABOUT ATTACKING THE SIDE LINES LIKE THE RAIDERS LIKE TO DO. SO THATS WHY SOME LIKE B. J. IS VERY IMPORTANT, HE IS ONE OF THE BEST AND I ALSO THINK RISHARD W. IS GOOD AT THAT. YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS GOING ON KIDS

Ross hopes Tannehill's No. 17 will be retired???

WHAT A FRIGGIN MORON OWNER!!!!! THE SAME IDIOT THAT SAID HENNE WAS THE 2ND COMING OF MARINO!!! SUFFERS FROM FOOT IN MOUTH DISEASE!!!!!!!! PLEASE SELL THE TEAM IDIOT!!!

Stra8balla,

My point is could you imagine the pandamonium on here had we taken TJ Graham in the 3rd?

if tannehill shits his pants because the owner wants to someday retire his #, then he's soft. i don't think it's too bad ross would say something like this. he has hopes, just like we all do.

We should go after Derek Moye WR Penn St. and Janes Brown OG Trow for a last 2 picks.

Dolfan Rick,
Does not dignify a response.

Henne was better then Tannehill ever will be. They should've taken Osweiler who has a lot more upside,

What is Ross supposed to say? "Hey, Ryan, welcome to Miami. I hope you have a forgettable career."

Some of you guys are really being ridiculous. He didn't say anything even remotely bad.

I get the frustration with him as an owner but when you start overreacting to completely meaningless stuff like this it's YOU who is sounding like the fool.

7th Scott Solomon DE Rice
7th Brett Roy DE Nevada

Steve Ross save the Dolphins. SELL THE TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree on Martin...over BJ, but they both rate very closely...NFL.com gave martin a 76 rating to 73.5 to BJ...but Texans to Martin in the 4th, where the Phins to a 1-2 round talent in Miller...we got BJ in the 6th, where he was ranged to be 3-5th rounds..so for value, i think it was there, and he was the best Z route runner left on the board, which is important in the WCO...we have a ton of WR's on the roster, and now BJ, and kinda Agnew, who is basically a big WR/TE...quite frankly, i dont even know which of the WR on there now will work great in WCO, and who wont...but I loved who GB always seemed to have a stable of options, in fact, otherthan Jennings, you never knew who was gonna get the ball...

OK Tony. Pay close attention to how defenses will press an suffocate our passing offense by shrinking the field. No fear of getting beat over top = easy days for cb's and safeties. Jody Nelson is not slow...ran 4.4 coming out of KState. Also has the size and strength to be a solid target over the middle.

I am saying we will be in the bottom 3rd in total passing offense and avg yds per completion in the NFL this year. Not because of the installation of the new system but because of the lack of explosive weapons.

The Heat are thumping the Knicks!

or 1 of those and Trevin Wade DB Arizona

It is noticeable that Armando didn't like the last few picks.

Who cares about the garbage Dolphins?

Hey new yorkers, eat a di ck. That is all.

Mando is no dummy. Even Streeter with his on and off effort was the better pick. You can't make a living throwing the ball in the middle of the football field. Just draft a OG and a safety and close up shop.

Ross is a football moron. No wonder his team stinks.

Is it me or has DL Billy Winn been on the best left available list for 2 days now.

HEY STRA8BALLA; YOU BEAT DEFENSES YOU SCHEME AND NOT SO MUCH WITH UP FIELD SPEED. THIS OFFENSE WILL MAKE THE FS/SS PLAY THE MIDDLE THUS OPENING UP THE SIDE LINES, WE DO HAVE UP TOP SPEED IN GATES, AGNEW, WALLACE BUT WE COULD USE MAY BE ONE MORE SPEED WR

OhioFan...i actually agree, would have liked Streeter over Bj, but only from a size/speed concept, but I dont watch as much tape as I am sure the scouts did on BJ vs Tommy...and obviously they feel he fits the system better than Tommy did...
But Ignorance?? Seriously? I wasnt even addressing your post..just that there are true examples who made it, just like Brady in the 6th..you cant call those ignorant..that would be ignorant..it is what it is...and for the record..my retirement package is doing very well right now, value is in high 6 figures..so for an "ignorant" guy, I must be doing something right...

Been in and out all day.
Where are the 2 7th rounders at for fins?

I wish they had 4 7th rd picks

Balty takes Streeter. Wr core...Boldin...Torrey Smith...Streeter. Scary. Speed....Size...Strength

THE 7 RD IS NOT GIMMICK OR A GARBAGE RD THIS YEAR, IS MORE LIKE 5 RD IN PAST YEARS

Boldin, Torrey and Streeter is one helluva scary thought to have to face...CB's will dread playing baltimore...

Sra8balla,

I haven't heard crap like some of the stuff you are coming up in a very long time. A track team does not a good offence make. the Niners went 13-3 last year with a QB that threw for about 3200 yards. Where were the burners on that team. Takes a lot more than just speed to make it in the NFL. Heyward-Bay was a top ten pick for the Raiders a few yers ago. He's no where close to being a top ten Wr in the league today. This will not be an all out aerial attack.

Tony...I respect your knowledge of the game. My stance is does it matter if the safety help is removed??? Lets say it's cover 0. If you can't beat the man in front of you and hold separation down field you aren't open. You must have some deep speed or just be a tall target who can win the jump ball to be able to capitalize.

I FUALT IRELAND FOR NOT MAKING A BIGGER EFFORT IN GETTING SOME EXTRA 5, 6 OR 7 PICKS IN EXCHANGE FOR NEXT YEARS DRAFT. BECAUSE OF ALL DE UNDERCLASSMAN COMING OUT THIS YEAR, NEXT YEAR IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE WORST DRAFT IN HISTORY...TAKE IT TO THE BANK MY FRIENDS

Did Irescum ask Tanny if his momma’s a hooka? Or he just asks the black players?

Craig....Vernon Davis runs a 4.3 dude. Ginn when lined up on the outside gets the respect of safties which opens up the entire field for check downs ..underneath routes and so on. WTF are you talking about. Without speed on the field you are dink and dunk. SF passing offense was rated where out of 32 teams??? Right! We will be even worse.

why is there not more retired numbers there has been some great Miami players many in the HOF but only three numbers makes no since to me

STRA8 MY POINT IS THAT A GOOD SCHEME WILL HELP ON THE DEEP BALL MORE THAM HAVING TWO SPEEDY WR IN THE OUTSIDE, BUT I DO THINK THE COULD USE ONE DEEP WR AND MAYBE ON THE 7 RD IT WOULD HAPPEN.. HEY STRA8 HOW ABOUT THE POINT OF GETTING MORE PICKS THIS YEAR IN LIEU OF NEXT YEAR WHEN THE DRAFT IS POSSIBLY ONE THE WORSTS BECAUSE OF THE UNDERCLASSMAN THIS YEAR

Tedd Ginn? Yeah how's he doing? How many catches did he have last year? He wasn't even on the field most of the game.

TED GINN? THAT'S your argument? You don't even realize it but you're making my point for me. Good job!

I remember Philbin saying after we traded Marshall "we don't need a #1 receiver in this offense" I guess we just need a bunch of slow possesion type receivers for his offense, funny I didn't see that in Green Bay last year. Look for a TON of 3 and outs next year. As far as tannehill goes, he does have the physical attributes you're looking for but anybody who knows anything about NFL Qb's it's the ability to make quick and correct decisions and I don't see that with tannehill. honestly I think they swung and missed AGAIN!

Still a bunch of decent CB's & WR's to choose from.

Unbelievable job of landing Jonathan Martin in the 2nd & Lamar Miller in the 4th. Hope this kid Olivier is NFL ready.

I guess impact players weren’t on this years needs list.. The Dullfins still
suck and always will until Ireland is gone!! Another wasted draft..

Aaron Henry or Antonio Allen might be good picks for S
I like Brett Roy DE Nevada also

Jordan White???

HEY CRAIG I DONT SEE ANY OF YOUR BLOGGING ON HERE...GLAD THAT YOU AGRRE WITH ME NO FUN INTENDED.

You tell me where their pass offence was rated Str8ball. It was VERY close to the bottom, I'll tell you that.

haters need to get a life. Quit trying to incite actual fans it's not working. Ireland despite what popular opinion here might be has done a great job. It's up to the players now to pan out. I have a feeling every single pick so far will make this team.

tony,

You got it man!

Alfonzo Dennard maybe?

Dennard was arrested less than a week ago for third degree assault on a police officer... he faces 5 years prison

Ireland sure loves his 7th round DTs
