The Dolphins have retired three jerseys since the franchise's fledgling year in 1966. And owner Stephen Ross is rooting that first-round pick Ryan Tannehill is so good, so dominant in fact, that his career will require the team to retire Tannehill's No. 17 when he's through.
"This is your number?" Ross asked Miami's newest quarterback this morning when he handed him his Miami jersey.
Tannehill responded that's exactly the number he wore at Texas A&M. Ross paused. Thought about it. And then said ..
"Hope one day we can retire this jersey."
The Dolphins have all three of their retired jerseys hanging in the lobby wall of their Davie, FL. headquarters. They belong to Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, and Dan Marino. All three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That is apparently what it takes to get your jersey retired by the Dolphins.
But no pressure, Ryan.

punched a cop in the face otherwise he'd be a great pick

Trevin Wade would make sense here but I'm not sure he'd be a upgrade over Carroll or Smith
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 05:47 PM
Ken Baxter huh?? TanneHill has limited QB games under his belt. His receivers dropped 64 passes and you need to go back to playing Madden. No clue
Posted by: bobbyd12 | April 28, 2012 at 05:47 PM
THE DROP 79 PASSES
Posted by: tony | April 28, 2012 at 05:48 PM
Kheeston Randall DT Texas
love this pick he has great attitude and motor. I thought he'd be rated higher and be gone around 4th
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 05:48 PM
I must admit I thought Huizenga was a terrible owner until i witnessed Ross.
Posted by: Fed Up Fin | April 28, 2012 at 05:48 PM
A 293 pound tackle? That can not be a good pick!!!
Posted by: Finfan66 | April 28, 2012 at 05:50 PM
Never heard of him.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 05:50 PM
Antonio Allen SS South Carolina would be a good pickup
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 05:51 PM
I've never heard of him either Oscar but USA Today had him projected to go in the 3rd. Good DL depth.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | April 28, 2012 at 05:52 PM
Nobody knows what Ireland is doing this deep in the Draft.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 05:54 PM
How the heck is Antonio Allen still around? I saw him listed as third round in a couple of mocks.
Posted by: Craig M | April 28, 2012 at 05:54 PM
Yeah, Dolfan Rick, I remember Frank Kearsey.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Mando, you are really trying to stir the pot with this post. Shouldn't they hope every draft pick turns to a hall of famers? This is my favourite draft ever and I'm not going to let you spoil it. Ireland really gained some time in my books this weekend. Go dolphins!2
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | April 28, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Of course they need cheap bodies for training camp.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 05:57 PM
The Dullfins are an Arena caliber team.
Posted by: Fins are Garbage | April 28, 2012 at 05:57 PM
Like this kid out of Texas. Projected to go in the third rd and we get him in the 7th. Superb value. This draft is one of the best I've seen in a longtime from the dolphins. They have been aggressive with the miller pick. Smart with the Martin pick and most of all, ballsy and not afraid to be great with the tannehill pick. I think this draft class in two-three years will form a solid nucleus moving forward. Great job Jeff

Had a terrible day at Calder today. Need to focus more.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 05:58 PM
Anyone inform the NY Knicks theyre in the playoffs? Theyre down by 30 to the Heat late in 4th qtr.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | April 28, 2012 at 05:58 PM
Apparently Philbin/Ireland have a lot of faith in some hidden talented receivers already on the Roster.
With this being a passing league and Philbin/Shermans reputations for having good passing teams, somethings up.
There is no way Ireland just ignores WR this draft without some sort of plan. Philbin must be sold on someone. I wonder who it could be?
Bess probably. But after that, who? Hartline? I dunno.
Posted by: odinseye | April 28, 2012 at 05:59 PM
J. IRELAND IS MAKING A BIG MISTAKE IN NOT GETTING MORE PICKS THIS LATE IN THIS DRAFT..THE PICKS THUS FAR ARE SOLID...BUT MORE TALENT LEFT ON THE BOARD IN MY STIMATION.
Posted by: tony | April 28, 2012 at 05:59 PM
Got invited to the Chinese Mandarin restaurant today. Plan to have Peruvian Sea Bass.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:00 PM
Hmm..
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:01 PM
WR's. Anyone?
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:03 PM
This gotta be Ireland's best draft ever. We basicall got 3 1st rd picks.
Tannehill's a 1st rd'er. Miller would have had a 1st rd grade had there not been concerns about him being an every down back. Jonathan Martin had a 1st rd grade by many scouting outlets.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | April 28, 2012 at 06:06 PM
Great Draft this year!
Posted by: killerdolphin | April 28, 2012 at 06:07 PM
Brett Roy DL Nevada
Luke Nix RG Pitt
Antonio Allen SS South Carolina
Jeff Fuller WR Texas A&M
Trevin Wade DB Arizona
Chase Minnifield DB Virginia
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 06:07 PM
tony, remember that is not only talent that counts but if the athlete fits the Philosophy. In general, at this level, talent among Players is practically equal, even if it appears to be not so.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:08 PM
No disrespect, but I wish people would quit trying to make excuses for Tannehill by mentioning drops.
His receivers scored lots of TD passes, 1 gained 1200 yards, another 900.
Besides, roughly 60 drops in 19 starts? It works out to about 3 drops a game. NOT UNUSUAL, get a grip.
Tannehill doesn't need you guys to make excuses for him. However, if you have any extra miracles, he could use one.
Posted by: odinseye | April 28, 2012 at 06:08 PM
captain Buzzkill or Negative Nancy?
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 06:09 PM
Well, you can't complain. I gave you my very best.

Finally Matthews comes off the board....
Posted by: OlympiaPHINFan | April 28, 2012 at 06:11 PM
I was just reading about Matthews a little bit ago. Another slowish posession type WR.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | April 28, 2012 at 06:12 PM
Rishard Matthews wr Nevada our pick. Wr people are you happy now? LOL

I guess substances can make you fall into a state of Chronic Depression(Major Depression sustained for 2 or more years).
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:13 PM
I PREDICTED THE DOLPHINS WILL GO WITH THIS EARLIER ,...HE CAN RUN THE Z AND ALSO GO DEEP ON YOU IF YOU FALL AS SLEEP..GREAT PICK WITH MORE TALENT LEFT ON THIS DRAFT
Posted by: tony | April 28, 2012 at 06:13 PM
After having earlier hopes for Andrew Luck, then RG3, then Peyton Manning, then Matt Flynn....I just cant get excited about Tannehill.
Posted by: Ron Son | April 28, 2012 at 06:13 PM
Can't really ask for more. We targeted every need except CB;
1) QB
2) RT
3) DE
4) Stretch the field TE
5) Two WR's
6) OLB

yes
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:14 PM
I believe he's a punt returner as well though.
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | April 28, 2012 at 06:14 PM
We got Richard Marshall in FA and they must like Carroll and Smith
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 06:16 PM
Rishard Matthews:
Rishard Matthews - #15 - WR-PRHeight: 6-0 3/8
Weight: 217
Speed: 4.57
Arm: 32 1/2
Hand: 9 1/8
Wingspan: 77 3/4
Birthdate: 10/12/1989
Hometown: Santa Ana, CA
Grade: 5.13
Positives:
Good size — well-proportioned with muscle definition. Fluid and athletic. Deceptive vertical speed. Soft hands to extend and catch. Good ball reactions, hand quickness and body control. Concentrates to track and adjust — can make contested catches. Good field and boundary awareness. Makes himself available to the quarterback. Strong after the catch. Returns punts. Tough, competitive and football smart. Solid character.
Negatives:
Average initial quickness (more smooth than sudden). Lacks elite top-end speed to blow by defenders or pull away from the pack. Could stand to improve route running — ran a limited tree and needs to learn how to sell patterns and get in/out of breaks more efficiently. Limited creativity after the catch. Poor effort and technique as a blocker.
Summary:
Well-built, athletic, productive, “Z” receiver with reliable hands who elevated his game as a senior despite the absence of Colin Kaepernick. Still honing positional nuances but has clear developmental value.

Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:17 PM
HEY OSCAR THE TALENT IM TALKING ABOUT HERE IS TALENT UNDERRATED COMPARE TO PAST DRAFT...IS NOT MARGINAL LEFT..IS ACTUALLY 5 TO 7 RD RAW TALENT LEFT.
Posted by: tony | April 28, 2012 at 06:18 PM
Also check out this youtube video that says he's a dynamic punt returner.
Bess days as a sluggish punt returner maybe over! LOL

Man, you don't draft a safety, you acquire him.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 28, 2012 at 06:19 PM
Matthews probably comes in as our new punt returner right away. The sluggish punt returning days of Bess maybe over.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | April 28, 2012 at 06:20 PM
Matthews also played with Colin Kaepernick at Nevada!
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | April 28, 2012 at 06:21 PM
I WILL HAVE TO AGRRE, THE RETURN TEAMS WAS AWFULL FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS, NOT MORE WITH MILLER AND RISHARD
Posted by: tony | April 28, 2012 at 06:22 PM
Draft is over. A Mr. Ireland, great job this year
Posted by: bobbyd12 | April 28, 2012 at 06:23 PM
Looking at this youtube video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6srtbQe3KA
They say he isnt fast but he sure is consistently running away from people. Seems to me he's football fast on game day! LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | April 28, 2012 at 06:24 PM
I was a bit mistaken on Matthew's speed.
He was apparently nursing an injury when he posted 4.6's at the combine, but made up for it when healthy at his pro day posting 4.4's..Per Cbssports.com
Posted by: Dolfan Rick | April 28, 2012 at 06:24 PM
I assume these drops were all catchable balls? Where is everyone getting this number from anyways? Is there like a website I can look at that pinpoints each and every drop? The drops I saw were balls floating and the WR needing to jump 80 feet in the air to catch it.
Posted by: Its a BEAUTIFUL DAY...NOT | April 28, 2012 at 06:26 PM
Tell you guys the truth, pretty good draft. I didn't like Tannehill at 8 but the rest was pretty darn good. Miller will be a stud.
Posted by: jrljr2 | April 28, 2012 at 06:26 PM
Yes it appears to be a good draft for us..only on paper so far...we will see how good Jeffy did in the coming years...
Posted by: cowkilla | April 28, 2012 at 06:27 PM
Guys,
After looking at our draft, I now say the Jets will have the acf east cellar this year! LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | April 28, 2012 at 06:27 PM
HE WAS PROJECTED AS 4-5 RD PICK BY MANY...THE DOLPHINS PASSING GAME IS GOINT TO BE DIFFERENT THIS YR AND I THINK BESS, GATES, HARTLINE ARE IN WITH WALLACE AND THIS TWO PICKS TODAY
Posted by: tony | April 28, 2012 at 06:28 PM
if they aren't drafted...
Luke Nix and Desmond Wynn for RG
Brett Roy DE Nevada
Aaron Henry & Antonio Allen for S
Trevin Wade and Chase Minnifield for DB
Tauren Poole RB
Posted by: B33RCA53 | April 28, 2012 at 06:28 PM
Also taking L Miller RB was nice...but does that mean D Thomas is a bust?
