Ross hopes Tannehill's No. 17 will be retired

Retired numbers
The Dolphins have retired three jerseys since the franchise's fledgling year in 1966. And owner Stephen Ross is rooting that first-round pick Ryan Tannehill is so good, so dominant in fact, that his career will require the team to retire Tannehill's No. 17 when he's through.

"This is your number?" Ross asked Miami's newest quarterback this morning when he handed him his Miami jersey.

Tannehill responded that's exactly the number he wore at Texas A&M. Ross paused. Thought about it. And then said ..

"Hope one day we can retire this jersey."

The Dolphins have all three of their retired jerseys hanging in the lobby wall of their Davie, FL. headquarters. They belong to Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, and Dan Marino. All three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That is apparently what it takes to get your jersey retired by the Dolphins.

But no pressure, Ryan.

two different players, It's more safety for when Bush is free agent next year and he asks for more money.

That was some nice utube video of Matthews. The guy seems to have a nice burst after he catches the ball. Might turn out to be a steal.

Dolfan Rick,

Look at this youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6srtbQe3KA

Matthews definitely looks faster than 4.6 here. He was running away from some db's. He's also a dynamic punt returner. Bess sluggish days as punt returner in Miami are over. Matthews also wears #15 just like Bess does.

If I were Ireland I'd try and get a couple more picks in 7th rd...
Antonio Allen and Trevin Wade would help fill that secondary. Also love the 10 sacks out of Brett Roy and his upside very surprised he isn't gone yet I had him in the 5th rd.

Matthews actually looks like a bigger faster version of Devon Bess and wears the same #15 too. LOL

HOPE IRELAND WILL HAVE SOME GUTTS TO GO BACK WITH 1 OR 2 PICKS ON THE7

I like the Cunningham and Matthews picks

Matthews looks like he'll be a definite 7th rd steal!

nice

I think this draft deserves an A easily

Didnt think I would ever say this but I like every single pick Ireland made this draft. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know when they can start signing the UDFA's?

Tomorrow.

I don't know about this. We traded Marshall for (one) 3rd round pick basically. Even with a bad attitude, why not keep the guy? Still good for 70-80 catches and a couple TD's. Seems like a waste if you ask me.

Thanks for the link YG. Your right about the speed, and on the outside too. I really liked where he made a move and scored on several slants. It reminded of the old 49ers WCO.

I'm glad I'm not the only that noticed that Bess doesn't do much after the catch or on returns.

He's a sure reciever, he's gonna catch the ball, but not much after the catch.

THE TEAM IS MJUCH BETTER NOW EVEN WITHOUT A CB AND PULLING OG. THAT WHY THE LOW KEY FREE AGENTS COME INTO PLAY BECAUSE GETTING R. MARSHALL AND THE HICKS WITH POSSIBLY GETTING JAKE SCOTT THIS WEEK IS A GREAT EFFORD BY THIS REGIME...DIFFERENT DIRECTION AND GAME SCHEME IS APPARENT HERE.

Agreed YG he was able to find great value in every round except w/ Tannehill but IMO he was deserving cuz of need at QB. He may turn out to be as good as the top 2 if not better. One thing I'm scratching my head over was Washington doubling up with Cousins. I think that is going to create some problems.

I may not be a fan of Tannehill but that doesn't matter much. Ireland did what he needed to do to start assembling a team that can compete with anyone on Sunday and all I can say is that is one of the best 7 round drafts from a GM I have ever seen.
If Tannehill turns out to be the franchise quarterback this team needs he hit a home run. Getting Martin in the 2nd and Vernon and Egnew in the 3rd, Miller in the 4th, which was a steal of humoungogigantis proportions, Kaddu in the 5th, Cunningham in the 6th and then finishin it off with Randall and Matthews.
I could see everyone of these picks making the roster this year. Randall was another steal in the 7th round.
Cunningham was unfairly projected as a 7th rd prospect. He was one of the reasons Cousins had so much success at Mich. St. He catches everything. Very productive at Mich. St. I love the pick.
Nobody can argue with the picks Ireland made in this draft and, if I can say that, anyone can.

Actually, NFL teams can begin signing un-drafted free agents as soon as the draft is over.........

Looking at the personnel on offense...we won't complete a pass for over 30 yds all yr long. Prepare for TE and check down city. The long ball is now completely out of the offense. Slants...digs...bubble screens...tunnell screens...short outs...and comebacks is the route tree. No deep posts...9 routes...deep outs.

To hell with Brandon Marshall, even drafting late, we found two wr's far better in the red zone.

Lets Marshall keep building his personal stats. The recievers we drafted seem to score td's. Last I checked, that how you win games! LOL

I'm surprised the Pats took a chance on Dennard... He is going to jail most likely

For those giving out A grades let me ask you this.

If we drafted Cox at 8 instead of Tannehill, what grade would it be then? Assuming we drafted all the exact same players past 8. What grade would it be then?

I'm just trying to understand if the A grade is for Tannehill alone. If so, then you're not even looking at the rest of the draft.

Ireland drafted like a guy who actually watches the games and understood what this team needed. I didn't feel that way in his previous drafts.

HEY STRA8 UNDER OUR LAST REGIME THE CHECK DOWN PASS WAS ALLWAYS 3-5 YR BEHIND THE LINE. I TOLD YOU BEFORE THAT WE COULD USE ANOTHER LONG BALL
WR ABLE TO HIT THE MIDDLE AND THET GOT IN ON RISHARD

The last 2 WR's are pretty much the same mold. The are good route runners, have good hands and can run after catch. They both play faster than they time.

I agree Lou, I see them all on the active roster this year.

This was a very good draft for the Dolphins.

Great job Ireland!!!

B-Day,

Many of saying excellent draft werent on the Tannehill at 8 bandwagon. I wasnt and I still say excellent draft.

Hell, if Tannehill becomes a top 5 qb, I'll revisit this draft and give it a AAA+ plus rating. Triple A my man! LOL

If they didn't take Tannehill then they would have taken Weeden or Osweiler somewhere else either way it'd still be an A.

Cunningham reminds me of a slightly smaller Terrell Owens. Wishful thinking I know but he has hands like vice grips, is strong and plays faster than he times out. Solid pick. You don't play in that conference, catch that many passes and not be able to translate at next level. Could be a sleeper right there.

Damn, maybe the problem was Sparano all along. Ireland was bringing in the players Sparano asked for.

Philbin comes in and this maybe one of the best drafts in Dolphins history! Remember, I said Maybe. LOL

If you were to tell me we got J Martin in the 1st and Vernon and Egnew in 2nd
Miller in the 3rd... ect it'd still be a good draft. We landed great talent.
I had Martin and Miller in my 1st rd mock. Vernon in the 2nd.

Remember a few things. Jason Taylor was a 3rd round pick...Zack Thomas was a fifth round pick. Not all gems are found in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Oh good grief. I was fine and then the damn jets just picked Antonio Allen in the 7th.

I THINK HE DRAFTED OUT OF FEAR...EITHER DRAFT WHAT YOUR COACH WANTS YOU TO DRAFT OR YOU ARE HISTORY, JEFF

All in all, I have been sitting here like the rest of you and digesting this draft and checking all the players rating and I 'm EXTREMELY HAPPY with what Jeff Ireland has done. Now he and his team have to concentrate for the undrafted acorns.

Coach Philbin and his staff now it is up to you to get this team where it needs to be. This team has talent and played very hard while starting 0-7.

We believe!!

Man Im so excityed about this draft my eyes are welling up when I think about. Im fighting back crying for joy guys. Im serious! LOL

HE IS NOW JEFF ILAND WITH THIS GREAT DRAT

YG,
it's good to see positive remarks like that... Getting behind the rookies is the best thing we as fans can do for our clubs this time of year. true to being a realist I respect. Can't stand all the others with doom n gloom all the time. makes me think they are Jets fans or something.

Marshall was too selfish me me me me me for a Philbin offense. Let him and Cutler stroke themselves off. Glad he is gone along with his antics. Forget about him.

tony,

Love the Jeff "I"-land! Looks like Jeffy boy landed the goods this draft! LOL

B33RCA53,

Those doom and gloomers dont care. They'll have new screenames win we win our next sb championship. Yhey'll claim they were 100% behind this draft! LOL

And we still have another extra 3rd rd pick next year... kudos

After this draft, I will try and attend at least 2 home games this year. For sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speed Math

4.60 is only 1 fifth of a second slower than 4.40. Think about that. Watch a second go by on a clock and divide that by one fifth. That is the difference over a 40 yard sprint. That is less than negligible.

Gotta check the home game schedule, pick at least two games and get my tickets early!

Good draft guys! I'm excited for training camp to start for the first time in awhile.

Now time for some Beck's and Rays baseball. Gotta take on the Rangers.

THEY ARE NOT FANS FROM OTHERS TEAMS ALL, THE ARE GM'S ON TRAINING OR LIKE I SAID ON ON THURSDAY THE SAME BUNCH THAT VOTED FOR OBAMA, FOOD STAMP DEPENDENTS WITH MARGINAL OR LOW FOOTBALL IQ. THESE ARE THE FANS THAT IN ORDER TO SEE A GAME NEED TO WAIT UNTIL ONE IS SOLD OUT SO THAT THEY CALL THEMSELVES MIAMI DOLPHINS FANS...HERE HATE OR NOT BUT IT IS THE TRUE.

Hey if 5 of these guys can contribute this season that is a success. We all know that all these players are crap shoots.

As for Ryan Tannehill, this was a pick that we had to make. When you look at the whole picture we almost had no choice. I really hope he turns out being the real deal. Can't wait to see him in pre-season.

The only other option to me was with what Cleveland did with Weeden. That was a ballz move a I believe a great move.

That's what we really need now is for Ross to cut some ticket prices or something and get a ton more fans in the stadium. In a couple years I can see that happening. Hoping they do something with the upperdecks and sidelines. IMO could make a big difference.

Tony!

What I see in clips matches this scouting report. Notice the will struggle to separate and the average long speed. Nothing about Matthews screams vertical target.

A long-striding athlete with good playing speed. Usually sure-handed with the concentration to snatch the ball out of the air. Tough and physical, effective in traffic. Has good vision and experience as a return man.

Negatives: Very average long speed and will struggle to separate at the next level. Not very explosive off the line of scrimmage and takes too long gearing down when changing directions. Unpolished route runner and does a poor job selling routes, lacking much burst in and out of his breaks. Isn't the most natural pass catcher. Has a sketchy background with some
character concerns.

how bout back to back seasons with 1000+ yrds

I am very impressed with the Draft Ireland had and am very optimistic about the future, after being so down for the last few months.....

But lets face it, the success of this Franchise all depends on how Tannehill pans out

HEY STRA8 AT THIS TIME PRODUCTION COUNTS AND WHAT HE BRINGS TO THE WCO, YOU R READING CBS SCOUTING REPORT. HE IS A GREAT RETURN PLAYER ALSO.

HEY STRA8 IN THE WCO YOU DONT SEE PASSES OF MORE THAN 40YRS ALL THE TIME, THE GAINS AFTER CATCH IS WHAT COUNTS SON

ion,

Actually that 2/10ths. But it really is huge when you consider an athlete covers right at 10yds per second. so .5 is basically 5yds, .25 difference basically 2-2.5 yds. For a nfl wr 2yds is wide open. Thats how small the throwing windows are in the nfl.

So the math you just gave basically equates to being open by 1 yd or 2yds. Open by 1yd is much tighter throw for the qb and the db is still close enough to make a play on the ball. That's where you need a physical reciever who can outfight him for the ball.

I read this part of the CBS report in draft grades rd 7

No. 227: Dolphins select: Rishard Matthews, WR, Nevada Grade
Matthews is good at bringing down catches in traffic, but he's in traffic more often than most because his limited athleticism makes it tough for him to get off the line or get separation in his routes.
C-

IN THE WCO TIMING PATTERNS ARE ALSO IMPORTANT.. WE WILL SEE JEFF FULLER WITH THE DOLPHINS BY MONDAY.

We will run the football and utilize the short passing game. Don't expect a NYG..GB...Det. onslaught of explosive pass plays.

Str8balla,

Then why dont you go root for the team that does your scouting. Oh I forgot, they they dont have actually have a team. Sorry bout your luck fella! LOL

Tony...I am hopeful that some how it all comes together. Tired of struggling to put points on the board and featuring a dull...none explosive passing game outside of reggie bush check down and screen magic. Philbin...I hope you payed very close attention to Mike McCarthy's play calling and play design.
