Cameron Wake: 'An amazing, amazing journey'

The news of the weekend for the Dolphins continues to be the signing of Cameron Wake to a four-year extension through 2016. He spoke with the media in a conference call this evening.

This is everything he said:

(On signing his extension) - “It feels really good. Really good. It’s kind of like taking things to another level -- kind of like when I came down here from the CFL. You always try to get better. You always want to reach the next level and I’ve been trying to do that since the moment I stepped on the football field at Penn State. Having a situation like this…it’s going through the journey. There aren’t too many guys who can say that… being released from the (New York) Giants, being out of football, going to the CFL and doing well up there, coming back, being inactive my first few games here with the Dolphins, playing in the Pro Bowl -- it’s been an amazing, amazing journey. It’s definitely been an amazing ride.”

(On if there was a moment where he felt this extension wouldn’t get done) - “You know what…I had faith in the whole process. It’s one of those things where patience is best. You definitely need that going through the process that I was going through. Like I said, everything that happened to me up to this point…there were a lot of times where I thought (inaudible). Never let go of your dreams and it was a situation where I had to keep striving and hopefully good things will happen.”

(On how hard was it not let his contract situation impact him on the field and how tough was it missing some of the offseason workouts) - “I’ve said this before; football is a game for big boys. We are all grown men. There is a business side and there is a personal side. As a grown man, you start to better understand there is a business side and everything has its place and time. Going through the last couple of years, I have obviously felt a sense that you want to get something done. Nothing will happen if you don’t (inaudible). Having to go out there and do that…if I was out there every play trying to worry about ‘oh my God, what do I have to do to get a contract on this play’, I would miss a tackle or (be in) the wrong gap. That would put me away from my ultimate goal. When you are on the field…you have to block out all of the other distractions. Your contract, your girlfriend, if your leg (is) hurting, it’s hot, whatever those are. You have to throw those distractions to the side.”

(On how fans seem to be more encouraged about the team after the draft) - “I have a very strong opinion about this organization. Obviously for many reasons, the major one being I got an opportunity to come back and play football at the highest level of the game I love. This organization was the team at the forefront of bringing me out of the CFL and having me come down here and play the game of football. Obviously, I have a strong attachment. They are very near and dear to my heart. The decisions they make and the decisions they’ve made are to make sure that we are a winning organization. I’ve seen them do that and I am looking forward to this upcoming season for sure.”

(On his impression of Joe Philbin) - “So far. So good. I sat down and spoke with him one on one on more than one occasion. He kind of threw his philosophy at me and he wants to run his own ship and I like the way it is going so far. It’s fresh blood. I know you guys have, or maybe not have, seen the addition to downstairs at the facility. Just trying to make it a first class organization from top to bottom and making sure we have everything we need to be successful. I’m looking forward to many good things this offseason. We are taking big strides to make sure that 2012 will be a good season for everybody.”

(On defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle) - “He is another guy that I got a chance to speak with. He’s been…what he has already brought to the table is huge in the meetings that we have had. It (the defense) looks very polished and a lot of guys are excited about it. We’ve always have been as a defense at the top of the list in making sure we do our job on the field (rest inaudible).”

(On what he has been doing this offseason) - “Other than working out (laughing)? I’ve actually had a little time to spend with my family before we got back for the OTA’s and offseason workouts. I’m one of those guys that are an everyday guy. Family, dinner and a movie. I hang out in Miami, which as you know is a destination for most people when they get the opportunity to come down here. We are truly blessed to be playing in a city like this. Miami has a lot to offer and every time I have the opportunity, I want to take part in that, but like you said, it’s football time now.”

(On if he has a first purchase in mind with the new contract) - “I think my journey from where I’ve come from. I want to stay humble with it. I have never been one of those guys. I am not looking at a helicopter or diamonds or big tiger (laughing) or nothing like that. There is nothing out there I think I would go out there…I am kind of one of those guys that (gets) the things that I need and most of the things I want or well below my needs. Like they said “wine money with beer tastes”. I keep it pretty simple and hopefully (save money) for a rainy day in the future and hopefully for generations to come.

Philbin has no chance to succeed as long as Ireland is the GM.

YG, WELL YOU TRY TO BREAK THE GREAT ODINS RECORD OF 60 HOURS OF NON STOP POSTING?
LETT US KNOW WHEN YOU TRY TO BREAK RECORD SO I CAN CALL GUENNESS PEOPLE

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace will probably be let go. But all the coaches are raving about Mathews. BJ looked good to, but no one could cover Mathews. We'll see how he does against Vonte and Smith.

I HAVE TO GO TO WORK NOW YG SO YOUU CAN POST FOR HOURS,ENJOY

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Not even a mention by Armando that the Dolphins CEO will become the new Big East commissioner.

This is not the place to come for news.

Everyone who knows me knows I was adamantly opposed to Tannehill as our QB pick.
It's only been a couple of days, and nothing to be definiive about will happen for a long while. But as far as first impressions go, interviews, handling the pressure, media, other rookies, and so forth, he's done exactly what he's needed to do so far.
Long way to go.
Has it changed my opinion hat we should've draft Cousins or Weeden? Nope. Not yet.
But he's knocked some of the plaster off my wall, so keep it up rook. Looking forward to seeing you compete on Sundays.

skills pay bills... Great deal C. Wake!!!!

at this moment we have running backs, we have some OL, we have QB or something like that... but our WR corps and D-backs S-U-C-K-S!!!!

FAKE ALoco iS HAVING GREAT TIME TODAY................................

YG......I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT WAS FAKE ALoco.........

agrre with fake alOCO on TED GINN ,HE STILL PLAYING FOR THE ALMOST BEST TEAM IN THE NFL ,WHILE OUR LAZY PLAYERS ARE GETTING CUT LEFT AND RIGHT .......

Agree w/fake aloco or real aloco(Nobodt knows for sure who's who) But I think some of these posters are why America is now a third rank country, People not working and not looking for work but instead just collect welfare checks and drinking all day. SAD.

ALoco go make some mint tea.

The main reason why we are going to win at least 10 Games this Season is the unfamiliarity of Teams with our offensive scheme.

People seem to dislike the Wildcat or versions of it. Can't imagine why, it won some Games for us which otherwise we never would have won.

More important than what Play is called is WHEN to call It.

I remember Griese used to toy with Defences calling plays they were not expecting at that moment, specially in the Red Zone(QB draws, quick traps, etc). We have the IQ now to do just that.

oscar,
the WCO is definitely a tough offense to guard if it's done right, but the key is "done right".
No offense in the NFL will confuse or trouble decent NFL defenders unless it's executed well. That's the key.
And to agree with you, the proper play call at the proper time is another key.
And having players that can take the plays to the next level is the last key.
Execution, timing, players.

The main reason why we are going to win at least 10 Games this Season is the unfamiliarity of Teams with our offensive scheme.

Good thing you arent a betting man. You'd be stone broke! LOL

Much better, JS, much better.

Oscar,
not that I'm an expert, but maybe this has value:
The Widcat is basically the college spread or variation of the single wing. When the running QB is a threat to throw AND run, this creates a mismatch in # of defenders versus ball-handlers. But since most folks have running backs as QBs, this is being gambled more often as a running play, and the defender gives up the pass and loads the box. Hence it's been stymied lately.
Tebow on the other hand used it well and created many running and passing yards from the mismatches recently at Denver. So yeah, it works well. You just have to have a passing threat. Brown only passed once or twice, and once it was sussed that he wasn't going to seriously damage anyone that way, the D tightened up.

The Jets will use it probably well.

I'd suggest Carolina try it too, as should Philly and maybe Washington. Heck Colts could try it.

Even us. Tanny has good legs, speed and a tough frame.

I thought of that, JS. Thought about Garrard(and not Tannehill) if they are to run that formation(if Garrard is still here when Season opens). They can split Ryan wide(definitely he won't run out of bounds) then serve as a decoy or actually go for a pass. But it was just my example what they can do with Tannehill's athleticism, specially in the Red Zone.

OSCAR, TELL US ABOUT TIME BEFORE THERE WAS TV.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Did Ireland Draft great Athletes this year or what? Tannehill, Egnew, Miller, Jonathan Martin. UFF! Vernon?

I listened a lot.

I think this is way too much money for Wake. He had 1 great season. Last year was good but not great. I don't think he sets the edge well and don't think he'll be effective in the 4-3 as a DE. He is a one trick pony. Way too much.

oscar, maybe they'll do some funky thing like that. But far easier, simpler to coach, and more effective would be the simple bootleg, TE sneak.
Qb runs a sweep misdirection, bootleg to the opposite side. TE, quick blocks and releases, opposite direction of sweep.
2 defenders will stay home (if they're not confused).
1. If the Qb has an opening around the DE, and the DB doesn't step up to stop him, he runs for the TD.
2. If the DB steps up, the QB throws it.

If the DE guesses it and stays home, then the QB has choices to let his receiver juke the defender, or himself juke the DE. Either way a good shot at working.
Tannehill is the only QB on roster who can handle this.

JS IS GREAT POSTER, HE HAD A GREAT ARTICAL ON OHIOS BLOG,MANY COULD LEARN ALOT FROM JS.

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

We're gonna win the SB.

JSLA,

Are you a jet troll? Notice you said nothing about Sanchez should run wildcat. We just spent 8th overall pick for Tannehill. Qb's can now be hit lining up in wr spot in wildcat. Im sure Philbin's much smarter than you.

PS: Email Rex Ryan and have him have your boy Sanchez run the wildcat jet troll. LOL

I vehemently disagree! JSLA would have Tannehill run wildcat to join Chad Pennington on govt cheese list. JSLA speaks in love with afc east cellar. LOL

"JONIOR HIGH"? Is that a school of higher learning for men who purchase ladies of the night?

Or is it school for ladies of the night to learn about Jons"

I have a sneaky suspicion that JS is none other than YG/DB et al. Very competitive fellows.

I SEE THAT FLIPER IS NOW IN ATTACK MODE NOW HE ATACKS ME
FLIPPER HOW LONG DO YOU COLLECT WELFARE CHECK?
DO YOU STILL TAKE IN BOARDERS IN YOUR TRAILER?

(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Dolphin web site you bunch of morons.

The one person who may falter in a 3-way competition at QB may be Matt Moore!

Marshall is gone and 1/3rd of Moore's yardage, TD's, & completions were to Brandon Marshall!

Moore wasn't able to beat out Henne for the starting job. He may just be a career back-up kinda QB, who plays better coming off the bench but has a hard time starting for a whole season.

Garrard may be better than people give him credit for. He's started in this league and done quite well. Like Tannehill, Garrard is also familiar with the West Coast Offense.

So, maybe Moore isn't our starter this year. Tannehill may need to sit for a while in order to work out some things & get up to speed. That leaves Garrard as our starter against Texas!!! What? It's possible...

Watch the current video of "tannehill takes snaps" on the SS.
He's running the misdirection bootleg on one.
It's devastating if done right.
And smart Qbs eventually learn to slide, so he can avoid head-hunters. He can take a hit, but whenever possible, avoid them.
Hey, it's already in the playbook.

You can have all the knowledge in the World but if you don't put it together in a Logical fashion, it will serve you for naught.

ALoco,

I still save money many year to purchase double wide trailer. Tornado hit trailer park. Now entire right side of my single wide has open air view.

I can now walk right out front of single wide to visit Roy Lee Junk and Salvage Yard. Roy Lee is town entreprenuer.

Tracy Android474,

Remember when Henne went down the media published he took zero first snaps in camp? Geesh, I thought anroids were supposed to be smart. LOL

Matt Moore took zero 2011 camp snaps. He wasnt brought in to start. Only to push Henne.

1st team

FLIPPER, CANT YOU GET A FEMA TRAILER?, SEEING HOW THERE BEEN NO NATUL DIESTER THERE SHOULD BE HUNDREDS OF TRAILERS AVALIBLE

(BUFFETT OF KNOWLEDGE)

ALoco,

We do have fema trailers. We converted them all into fancy porta-johns. Everyone in our trailer park has one. Thank goodness, no longer have to take a crap outside. LOL

ALoco,

I get up 4:00 AM every morning so I can ride my old jackass to the local library in town just so ins I can talk you by compruter. LOL

ALoco,

That's why I post all day. Long ride back to trailer park by old jackass. LOL

YG,

I don't own a Droid! I use an IPhone!

ALoco,

Ride to town by old jackass so long I eat 1 ilb brick govt cheese there and 1 lb brick govt cheese on way back. Love my govt, free to be free! LOL

Tracy Android474,

Not telephone, you like Data on Star Trek. Data not stupid. Me thinks your files may be corrupt.

Tracy,
Moore wasn't signed until July. Henne had the edge over Moore only because he had been practicing with the team and had a copy of the playbook. On an even field, Moore would probably have beaten out Henne.
When you look at how Moore performed last year coming in to camp that late I doubt Garrard is going to beat him out for the starting position. The only qb in camp who has a chance to start in place of Moore would be Tanny and that is if he shows he can handle it.
Moore is not a bad qb and he's capable of starting in this league. If he gets a shot at running this offense this year the fins may have the luxury of sitting Tanny, if they feel they need to.
Anyway,
Oscar @ 1:54, Maybe that will be Philbin's nickname: the IQ.

YG,

And, I noticed that in your exuberance to chastise me, it took you three posts to complete a coherent thought. You have since deleted two of them. Perhaps you should perform a self-diagnostic and stop playing with your hardware!

to be or
NOT TO BE............

OSCAR THE MIDGET......

Lou,

I agree. And, yes I remember last season. You would have thought that the coaches could have seen Moore's ability in practice, but apparently not. Actually, I hope that Moore is our starter (he's earned it based on his performance last year), but Garrard is more familiar with the WCO and has more experience as a starter. Starting Tannehill, at least before the Bye-Week, is a mistake in my opinion.

My point was that there's an open competition at Quarterback and everyone's assuming that Moore will win it, or that Tannehill will win it, and no one thinks that Garrard has anything left in the tank. We may all get surprised.

Hopefully, whomever starts will be finally able to beat the Texans and start the season out right!

Well done Cam, you seem like my kind a of guy. This guy will be a demon next year.

I'm excited to see Tanny in gameday uniform and running some plays during preseason.

The future is now

Anyways, Moore lost his go-to receiver in Brandon Marshall. Hopefully, he can adjust to the new system quickly and spread the ball around more. He IS the one with the most experience with our receiver corps, and that may help him. No one knows what, or if, Garrard has anything left to give. It's going to be interesting to watch. Can Moore retain his starter spot? Can Garrard regain his probowl self? Can the kid blow them both out of the water?

GO FINS!!!

Time to hurl insults ALoco?

Now that gay marriage is legal in Massastupids, are you and Tom Brady getting hitched anytime soon?

With new coaches and installing another new system on offense and defense I dont see us winning more then 4-5 games next season. And dont forget there is no Brandon Marshall the opposing D has to double team.
