The decisions made and choices looming at guard, receiver, safety

Barry Jackson making another cameo in Armando's blog with a couple of quick items and my latest Dolphins Sports Buzz post.

The common theme among safety, receiver and right guard this off-season has been this: In each case, the Dolphins opted to develop their own players instead of adding a sure-fire starter at any of the positions, even though a bunch were available this offseason. Yes, Miami added receiver Legedu Naanee and safety Tyrell Johnson, but both project as likely backups unless Johnson can win the safety job (which would be mildly surprising but not out of the question).

The decision appears final at safety, barring injuries or an intriguing acorn suddenly emerging (to use a Jeff Ireland-ism). With receiver, Ireland hasn't ruled out adding a veteran if he doesn't like what he sees from the unproven young players in the coming months. We address both of these positions in my current post on my Sports Buzz Blog.

With right guard, a final decision hasn't been made, but this much is clear: Veteran starter Jake Scott would love to play for the Dolphins. He visited here in April. The Dolphins haven't told him he's no longer being considered, but they haven't told him an offer is forthcoming, either. Ireland, when asked about Scott, wouldn't rule it out. But it's also clear Ireland and Joe Philbin prefer to give John Jerry every opportunity to win the job.

The Scott/Jerry decision isn't an easy one, but the Dolphins clearly prefer to give Jerry a chance - at least for the moment - before giving more thought to signing Scott, Kyle Kosier or any other veterans available.

Unlike Jerry, Scott has been an established, quality starter, starting every game the past six years. If you believe the numbers offered up by Pro Football Focus - which reviews every snap of every game - they would tell you that Scott graded out as the seventh best among 77 qualifying guards last season.

PFF rated him a smidgen above average as a run blocker and well above average as a pass blocker. He allowed two sacks and 11 quarterback pressures. But the Titans decided to replace him with an older Steve Hutchinson, who obviously has had a terrific career.

For perspective, Vernon Carey (who remains unsigned) was rated 44th among guards last season. PFF said Jerry played 180 snaps at guard - he also got work at tackle - and allowed one sack and three pressures. Scott graded out much better than Jerry as a pass-blocker, but Jerry graded out slightly better as a run-blocker, albeit in a small sample size.

Jerry, at 25, is six years younger than Scott - and that means something to the Dolphins.

"We're going to try to get Jerry established," Ireland said. "Jerry still has that developmental upside. He played well in some games."

Joe Philbin said earlier this offseason: "We've got to find a home for him. He's got to earn a spot."

Jerry now has a home and he is being given every chance to earn that spot, ahead of Nate Garner and whomever else the Dolphins might sign there. If he doesn't perform, the Dolphins will have another reason to rue taking him 73rd in the 2010 draft - 22 spots before New Orleans took Jimmy Graham.

Scott also visited Arizona but remains unsigned. He's not going to wait for any team if he gets an offer to his liking. The Dolphins must hope that Jerry either shows enough in OTAs the next few weeks or that Scott remains available for a while if Jerry doesn't.

Couple other notes:

### Joe Philbin told ESPN he would like to name a starter before the third preseason game. "You'd love to have it done by after the second preseason game," he said. "The third preseason game is when your first unit is going to get the vast majority of the snaps in terms of your preseason allocation. I'd say by the third preseason game we'd like to have the unit established."

### It's obvious how much Matt Moore loves an offense where he's not being told - by Brandon Marshall or anyone - to throw him the damn ball. "There's no pressure to get the ball to any one specific guy," Moore said. "So you can just go back there and wing it."

### Though Moore called it "weird" and "awkward" that a rookie knows more about the offense than he does, he says it good-naturedly. The relationship among Moore, David Garrard and Ryan Tannehill has been very good, to the point that Philbin went out of his way this week to praise them for how they're helping each other. "It's impressive to watch," Philbin said.

### Oregon linebacker Josh Kaddu became the latest Dolphins draft pick to sign, joining Jonathan Martin, Rishard Matthews, B.J. Cunningham and Kheeston Randall.

For some notes on where the Dolphins stand at safety and receiver, and what Ireland is saying about each of those positions, plus the latest bad news for Warren Sapp, please click here on my latest Sports Buzz post:

With Armando vacationing, David J. Neal will be at the next scheduled Dolphins availability next Tuesday and will post an update then. There will be four additional days of availability after next Tuesday, before camp opens in late July. I'll be on NBA Eastern Conference Finals duty next week (assuming the Heat makes it) but will have more Dolphins notes in buzz columns. Have a good weekend.

Can't stand this whole idiotic "I hope you're not saying" modus operandi of responding to a statement.

I'm saying what I TYPED. Not what you SUPPOSE I'm saying in your little flights of fancy.

It would be like you making a statement about Tannehill or whatever and me responding "I hope you're not saying that you want the United States destroyed by comets!"

Grow up and respond to what people are ACTUALLY WRITING, you nitwits.

Does anyone ever read more than the first two sentences of these really LONG posts? I didn't think so.

Prof Lou says turnovers will play a large part in the success of the team? Wow, profound. Dark clouds will play a large part in whether it rains or not.

He says the D will play well right out of the gate. Nobody can know that with so many significant changes, new D and a rookie DC.

He says Moore will start. I like Moore, he has the inside track to starting having more experience with the team, but I won't be surprised at all if the stronger armed, more experienced Garrard beats him out in preseason.

He says the biggest difference will be conditioning. I say it will be talent and how well the coaches can scheme against the competition. Sparano was a total failure at changing strategy during the game, Philbin will have to show he is more competent and flexible.

The team that score's the most usually wins.

Squandering 3 picks on D Thomas was friggin MORONIC!

Irescum without Parcells puppet strings = FLOP

I like D. Thomas. I believe he will show his worth this year. He has great hands, not many tough bruiser backs can catch as well as he can. Our top 3 RB's now, Bush, Thomas, MIller, are all great pass catchers. I like it.

Wow, Baary Jackson's blogs are miles better than Mando's.

Whereas Mando seems hell bent on just concentrating on all the negative, Barry does highlight the negatives and weaknesses but at the same time describes the team's mindset in approaching the solution to the problem.

Aside from having Reggie Bush, the Fins signing Jerome Messam(top RB and MVP in CFL), and drafting Lamar Miller speaks volumes about the dissapointment in D Thomas. D Thomas will be the 4th RB option this year and a very likely cut after the season especially if Lamar Miller shows anything.

I want to meet Home.

Actually, the drafting of Miller says MUCH more about the team (wisely) guarding themselves in the event of a Bush injury---which he has a history of---as well as replacing him with a similar skill-set back if he departs after this year and hopefully giving the team a legitimate return threat, which they have been sorely lacking.

It has very little or nothing to do with Thomas.

Blank paper is better than Armando's blogs.

Drafting Miller is about depth. Half of you think every single player drafted means the end of someone else. That is what you would call going nowhere.

Why would Bush leave unless that cheap SOB Ross didnt pay him fairly?

Bush's contract is up after this year, that's all. IF Miller proves to be a valuable commodity with a bright future, then the team may simply let Bush walk and replace him with the younger and cheaper player.

That's how business is done in the NFL, regardless if you're the Patriots, Packers, Cowboys, Steelers, or Dolphins.

Doesn;t mean Bush IS going anywhere, only that the team (wisely)n would ideally like to have options there.

And can you please provide any SPECIFIC examples where Ross has been "cheap?"

I want to meet Home.

Well, I would like to engage in some good, Protestant marital relations with you but you're always so "worried about the Beaver" that you never seem to have time anymore.

I would like to see YOUR Beaver once in a blue moon, dear!

I'm almost positive that there are maybe 6-8 REAL who post on Armando's blog....the rest are variations of HOME and OSCAR CANOSA's screen name.......PERIOD.....

talk about weird people....

Hey that cheap SOB Ross offered Matt Flynn half of what he's worth! And he cheaped out on paying our best player Brandon Marshall! He also hired the cheapest HC money can buy! Its no wonder the team stinks!

Stanton HR again. 11th HR in May.

Had Philbin, Ireland and Co. deemed Flynn WORTHY of a huge contract, Ross would have offered it to him. Frankly, I think they were wise not to. Or would you rather be like the Cardinals and financially saddle yourself with an overhyped guy coming from a system that can make almost anyone look good?

Marshall was a Philbin decision, no question in my mind about that. He wants his own guys marching to his tune, not a high-maintenance diva.

Cheapest HC? Well, Ross was willing to throw a BOATLOAD of money at both Harbaugh and Fisher. Money was NOT an issue with either. Both simply had better situations (at least in theirn opinion) as options and took it.

You're not making a very compelling case for Ross being "cheap." If you want an example of a truly cheap owner, look at a guy like Mike Brown with the Bengals or what was going on in Oakland under Davis. No comparison with Miami under Ross even if we haven't had good results thus far.

You know, you can't just go out and spend whatever you like, either. I trust you've heard there's this thing called a salary cap.

Ross is the second wealthiest owner in the NFL after Paul Allen. You can question his decision making and public relations gaffes but the man is not cheap at all.

I agree with jim. You don't just throw crazy money at marginal players. You certainly don't see consistently good teams like the Patriots or Steelers doing that. Ever.

Clearly, Philbin wanted Matt Flynn. Philbin was quoted ..."I have no idea why Matt Flynn picked Seattle instead of Miami." ....Little did Philbin know Ross was being his cheap self offering half of what Flynn is worth.

Jim you are right about the cap. We have no cap space and no talent. Thanks Ireland.

Matt Flynn isn't any better a prospect than Kolb was, and you see how that worked out. The Dolphins were smart to pass on him at that price.

I'd rather stick with Moore for now and have a guy like Tannehill to groom than tying up millions in Flynn, who isn't going to have all those weapons around him in Seattle.

.Philbin was Matt Flynn's coach and he wanted him. Sorry but I'll trust Joe Philbin's opinion over yours anyday.

I'm delighted you and Philbin are on such close terms. What did he have for lunch today?

In all seriousness, did you REALLY expect him to say something like "I like Flynn and wish him well but I really don't think he's a future star in this league?"

If you don't understand how these things work---and the professional courtesy extended with comments among those who know each other---then YOU are the one in need of a crash course on the NFL and how business is conducted.

If the Dolphins had deemd Flynn worthy of that money it would have been offered. They didn't. Simple.

Matt Flynn plays for Seattle. I'm interested in the MIAMI DOLPHINS.

Did you ever resolve your keyboard problem? You remember, the one you said was the cause of your name changing?

Again.......Philbin was Matt Flynn's coach and he wanted him. Sorry but I'll trust Joe Philbin's opinion over yours anyday.

Marlins tie their franchise record for wins in a month and Stanton blasts another monster shot. 12th home game this season with over 30,000 in the stands, too.

And this is with a BANGED UP Marlins team. Look out when this bunch is healthy. Seriously.

They be good!

Posted by: Kettle | May 28, 2012 at 03:54 PM

Yes...yes....that happened like 2 years ago....but you still re-live it like it was yesterday....only someone with ABSOLUTELY ZERO life could remember such a minute detail in SOMEONE else's life....each time you bring it up I feel more and more sad for you.....how pathetic that you are actually keeping note of someone else's life on a blog......

I had a veggie omelette to day...with spinach...tomatoes...onions...cheese...topped with Salsa....my wife had french toast, and my son had chocolate chip pancakes....copy and paste that....then fantasize over it for the next 2 years....

you easily win the prize for BIGGEST LOSER...here and on the Daily Dolphin.....

You were posting under a different name and claimed it was because of a keyboard malfunction? Seriously?? LOL!

and your standing by the keyboard waiting for my reply.....how cute.....

you are the definition of NO LIFE.....Your picture should be in every slang dictionary under NO LIFE.....

Different person, kris (really). That's the truth whether you believe it or not.

I just find the whole thing funny, that's all.

Kris, That's none other then Drunken/Druggy Odin Smell.
He never could stand you.

I'm pretty sure i know who it is.....he brings up the SAME thing over and over again.....as if that some how justifies his trolling....

like I said...NO LIFE....

I wondert if its PUR coincidence that Odin has brought that up on more than one occasion as well.....

you must think I am as stupid as you act.....

@ Kris | May 28, 2012 at 04:17 PM

Sir, here you are calling out others that you believe to be changing their names, when you yourself have done the same thing. Hypocritical don't you think? Unless you can explain to us how a keyboard malfunction changed your name, that is a far fetched tale.

Don't call out others if you don't want others to call out you.

We can only hope that Odin smell stay over at what is a circle jerk known as "Ohio's Blog"
Please odin stay over there.

didn't say it was Odin....

Read what is WRITTEN.....not just what your HOOKED ON PHONICS brain can sound out....

I can tolerate troll (to a certain extent)....however....I DRAW the line @ troll with reading comprehension deficiencies....

Good day to you....

Kris, Only Odin Smell pastes and copies like that
Odin, Go back to the circle jerk that's Ohio's blog
Leave us alone....

Kris, let me bring you up to the year 2012. There is a search utility right here on the blog. It works well, and fast. No need for me to store what the Herald has stored.

You are more than happy to call others out, but you sure don't like it when others call you out. Double standard?

Hi everybody. What did I miss.

Armando gets dumped from his radio gig. So sad. Thought he had a face made for radio. Should give him a lot more free time with which to avoid posting anything relevant on his blog.

Kris griping about imposters on the blog. Awesome. We have a word for days when that happens. We call them week days.

The Dolphins still seem intent on starting a variety of chia pets, pumpkins and still life shrubbery at RG and WR. I think that's the tops.

And odin remains the only reason to tune into this blog at all.

Whats so funny about your proof is this...

Why would I claimed my error...mistake....IMPOSTERING (...)....or whatever you want to call it.....

You can only take it out of context...because you are either to STUBBORN to face the truth...or to DUMB to fully understand what context is....

in either case...it you look like an idiot under every screen name you post under.....and FYI....your not fooling anybody.....

My original post was about about HOME and OSCAR CANOSA...both KNOWN trolls who impostor.....yet neither of them are here....

BUT YOU....someone without a dog in the fight SHOWS up to defend their good name......how totally UNRELATED of you.....thanks for proving my point....

CHECK...and MATE......

OH....and good day to you sir.....

do I mean it this time....guess you will never know.....

Could it be DyingBreed?

DyingFlipperYesterdaysBreedFlopperGone is.....uhm....well...best described as.....let's see....to put it accurately...an ASSSHOLE!

Write, Never thought of that...
Maybe Odin Smell and DB are the same
Mkes me wonder who else Odin/DB Are?

Kris sure is defensive about it. It makes you wonder.

Loving the Miami Dolphins reminds me of “Speed Balling” Cocaine and Heroin.

OK, it reminds me of what I READ about “Speed Balling” Cocaine and Heroin……….(ahem)…………

This from the "Circle Jerk" Blog from Ohio.
Odin, please consider going to Sweden, They have goverment Assitted Suicide. I'll buy your ticket buddie.

If Coach Philbin can win 6 games this year installing new systems and without Brandon Marshall, I'll consider it a success.

This morning I had a wonderful bowel movement and then flushed my odin down the toilet.

We have 3 of the fastest players in the league in Bush, Miller and Gates. Philbin must design plays to exploit their speed.
The RB's can carry the team playing WR. But what does that say about our receiving core. Lol
We better hope Cunningham is the real deal!!

Position review as to adequate or not.

RB ? Check

TE ? Check

QB ? Check, Moore has shown us something, Garrard at worst will be the best back up we have had in awhile. Tannehill, if they liked him at 8, I like him too.

OL ? Check

WR ? Probably 1 or 2 besides Bess, Hartline will step up

DL ? Check

LB ? Questionable

CB ? Check

S ? Questionable with potential, young guys developing.

So tell me, what the heck is so terrible here? What team doesn't have some weaknesses? So what if we don't have ProBowlers at every spot, nobody else does either.

Tell my kids I'm finally doing it, so I wont see them for 90 days.
I finally am facing my substance abuse problem and alcoholism.
I am ashamed at myself and the father I have been pretending to be all theses years.
I will not go through life fat, stoned, drunk and stupid anymore.
My kids mean more to me than that.

Walker, i'm proud of you for entering rehab.
Hope there is no more embarrassing moments for you.
Your kids will be proud of you when you complete the ninety days and they will finally have their dad back.
Trust me going through life promoting alcoholism and drug abuse is a terrible way to live.
I could not imagine being in the drugged out drunk condition you are usually in when around your children.
Certainly you must be ashamed of yourself and took you almost to the point of hitting rock bottom to finally address your substance abuse problem.
Good luck,Walker.

Hey, Armando, how about a Live practice Blog? There is delicious, cold Blue Ribbon beer there.
