Coyle: Entire defense has 'really impressed'

Kevin Coyle is running (to lose weight) while he's running the Dolphins defense these days.

After every practice or whenever defensive players run wind sprints, their new coordinator joins them. It no doubt sends a message to the players that their coach is in it to win it right along with them. As fraternal moves go, this is a good one.

But Coyle has bigger things on his mind than simply getting in shape and bonding with players. He's got to find a safety to play alongside Reshad Jones. He needs to get Koa Misi adjusted to the 4-3. He has to manage the competition along the defensive line.

He spoke to the media for the first time Monday. This is everything he said:

(On why he runs wind sprints with the defensive players after practice) – “Because I’m overweight (laughing). My daughter keeps telling me that I put on some pounds, so I like to try to stay in shape. During the season it is a grind on you physically as a coach as (much as) it is, much more, on players. The better shape you are in, the better you can keep your stamina up, so it’s something that I try to do. It’s a little harder as you get up in years as I have over the years now, but I like to try and do that and I like to run with the guys whenever I can to show them that I can still do it a bit.”

(On where he sees the most growth on the defense thus far) – “Well, it’s a work in progress. I felt coming out of the spring one of the goals we had was to be better communicators in the back, and there was considerable improvement in that area. Our technique is getting better and better every day. It’s not close to what it has to be, but this group of guys has really bought into what we are trying to do and every day we see glimpses of how good they can be if they continue to work the technique we are encouraging and coaching them to do each and every day. The entire group, not just the secondary, has really impressed me is when these guys come in the building, they come in serious, workers. It’s a great attitude in there. We have fun in the meetings but yet there is a great focus and attention to detail. This is a hungry group; they’re hungry to win, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to get there. It’s been a pleasure to get the opportunity to work with this entire group.”

(On what he told his players to expect from Hard Knocks having experienced it with the Bengals) – “You can’t allow anything to be a distraction. In this league, there are going to be cameras on you each and every place you go. We have a job to do. You have to focus on that job and you have to that singleness of purpose and focus of mind to go out there and not let anything get in your way. We talked about the fact that the guys in Hard Knocks crew do a phenomenal job. They say that after a couple of days you won’t notice that they (crew) are in anything, that they kind of blend in. I didn’t really agree with that, prior to it happening, but honestly, it’s that way. They were in the meetings the first day or so I think that players were conscience of it, the coaches were conscience of it, but now you just go about your business. I think our guys are feeling that way and the funny thing is, we feel like we’ve been in camp for four weeks when it’s only been four days, and the crew is going to be with us for another four or five weeks, so I think it will just get better and better as we progress.”

(On his impressions of the defenses ability to create turnovers) – “We would like it to be better than it is, although I think we have got off to a decent start. We got to get more interceptions, we left a couple out there today, but we got our hands on the ball. We are constantly trying to work on the strip aspect of things in the fact that we are not taking the ball carriers to the ground. So the first guys will go in there and hold him up and the next two, three or four, we want those guys working on one thing, and that’s locating the ball. Coach Philbin, the way he’s structuring practice each and every day, we’re doing some sort of ball security on both sides of the ball. So I think it’s a tremendous thing that our defensive players are learning how to carry the ball and learning how difficult it is in how you can get the ball away if you are not protecting it correctly. So those periods that we do in the very beginning of practice, those fundamental periods that some people give lip service to, we are hammering it away each and every day. I think it’s a great credit to Coach (Philbin) and how he structures the practices.”

(On there being only one available starting spot on defense (SS)) – “Well your count doesn’t matter, no offense. But there is a lot of competition out here, and there is a lot of competition throughout, and actually you’re wrong on that account (number of starting spots available), but I won’t get into any specifics. There is more than one job that we are out here competing (for), and we will keep competing for backups. Really from defensive standpoint, there are more than 11 starters in my mind. Sometimes, depending on the schemes you are going to play and the substitution defenses you have, you can have 13, 14, 15 guys which are, in my mind, starters in a respective group. As a result, they are going to be in game situations where they have to perform as a starter, so we have competition at safety, we have competition at corner, we have competition at the linebacker position right now. With our guys up front, we are competing not only for starting jobs, but we have a crew of guys up front and we are going to have some tremendous battles for the spots with the defensive line. We have a good crew of young players that are competing out here, so we got a long way to go. We haven’t had an exhibition game yet and there are still a lot of positions to be determined as we progress.”

(On his thoughts on being named defensive coordinator for the Dolphins) – “I was thrilled for a couple of reasons. Number one, when we started to discuss it and started to talk about the potential for the staff, I’m really excited about the staff we have. We have great chemistry in the room defensively. With the guys that we have been fortunate enough to add to the defensive staff, (we have) great quality coaches. There’s some veteran NFL coaches, some younger coaches coming from the college ranks, I think we have a really good blend. On top of that, offensively and defensively, when you sit in the meetings as a total staff, I think there’s a great vibe and a great chemistry there. Sherm (Mike Sherman) and I have worked together in the past; we’ve known each other for 25 years. Some staffs you’re on, every staff is different so I think our staff, we are fortunate in that we got a group of guys who are excellent teachers, excellent coaches and a great group of people. So it can’t get better than that.”

(On how the front seven on defense are handling the change from a 3-4 to 4-3) – “Excellent, excellent. I think that they are embracing it, and for some of them, it lends to their skill sets, maybe a little better, but not necessarily. They played darn good defense a year ago in the 3-4, and as I told you guys in the beginning, there weren’t that many true 3-4 snaps. There was a lot of under defense, a lot of substitution defense, so there are elements of what we did here a year ago that we are incorporating and some that we will continue to incorporate as the year goes on. But I think the transition has been great.”

(On who has had to make the biggest adjustment in the new defensive scheme) – “Probably Koa Misi playing off the ball at the Sam linebacker spot when he is out, off the line of scrimmage. But he is improving every day and we are excited about his progress.”

Not sure I was pleased to see that clip of Phibini eating a giant mound of spaghetti and meatballs. If he is going to turn Guido on us like Spazini its going to be a long season.

Philbin = Cameron 2.0

YG

I see your points YG.. So the GM hires all the scouts right, and JI has a negotiator right
Dawn Aponte? YG who hires the scouts and Dawn Aponte?? Is it Ross or the controller or the vice president? I really don't know, but if it's someone else than I can't put all the blame on JI But if JI he hires the scouts the negotiator Dawn Aponte and if this team fails again at the end of next year than who gets the blame? Because I dont think JI is going anywhere soon, not this year! I like your points though YG!

Ray,

Unless there's a Cam Cameronish type 1st yr, nobody's getting fired. Sure, everyone would like to make the playoffs, but noone's job will depend on it. Not this year anyway.

But Im sure if this team doesnt at least equal last season's 6-10 record. Every's butt's on the hot seat. 7-9 or 8-8, I think everyone's safe, including JI.

Coalition,

There's nothing wrong with Ohio deciding to forum his own public/private blog. However, the extremely limited success he's having is due to neither having time nor resources to nurture its growth.

Plus, there's an extremely self-serving egotistical few of his posters there that repell potential new posters like roach meets raid.

Personally, if I were Ohio, I would just shut it down. However, on the flip side, if certain elements are there. It also means they'll spend less time here.

411 and the rest of the whiners:

I have one question...WHAT'S THE POINT OF YOUR WHINING?

The only time it makes any sense is from the beginning for the off-season until free agency starts. Here's why.

1. Ross is NOT going to sell the team because your pink panties are in a bunch. Quit asking. Ain't gonna happen. If you want to boycott, do so. Please. Start by NEVER WASTING EVERYONE'S TIME WITH YOUR WHINING.

2. He is NOT going to fire Ireland in August. Ain't gonna happen. Why keep posting over and over and over and over the same tired crap? You make no point. You server no purpose. NO ONE CARES.

3. Who do you think they are going to get at QB, WR, etc., at this point? Sure, post your opinions on that matter IN MARCH AND APRIL when they matter (like anyone on the team will pay attention, but at least it makes senses to do so).

After that, discuss the nuances of the talent we have, make observations others might find interesting, debate who should play where or make the cuts. BUT WHINING DAY AFTER DAY ABOUT DECISIONS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE ARE POINTLESS AND ANNOYING.

I know you people think you're doing some kind of good. But you are not. You're just wasting a lot of space here for people that want to discuss the team we HAVE...not the masturbatory fantasy team that you, in your indisputable wisdom, would have absolutely put together.

If you cannot do that than PLEASE boycott the team...by never thinking about, watching, discussing and...pay attention 'cause this is the really important one...POSTING ABOUT THEM ever again.

Thank you.

God is obviously not a fin fan, so we don't praise that fagwag.

God likes Rex and Belicheat and BountyGate more than Miami the land of boat people.

Dude you're hilarious. You're so focused on what I'm doing you aren't even talking football. I'm going to purposely post as much as possible in here just for you. You do realize by telling me to leave you actually accomplished the opposite of what you want right. Now I have to stay. You think you can bully people on a blog and they will run from you, lol. It's so stupid it's funny.

Call me names, make anti-Italian remarks, talk about jer$ing off, whatever makes you happy. You go ahead and waste your time, I wont be arguing with a crazy person but I will have a great time watching you act like a fool.

This is officially the last time I address anyone who is disrespectful in this blog. There are plenty of normal people here to talk to. Go Phins!!!!!

Jury's still out, but, I think we may have found our future qb(Tannehill). Unless Philbin's blowing smoke up our pipes, Tannehill is acutually learning from his mistakes.

Ota's and minicamp Tannehill was getting the ball out late. From what was reported by even Armando himself, Tannehill was terrific Monday and faired pretty evenly in what was redzone work today. Plus, today he had zero picks.

According to media reports, none of our 3 qb's were actually terrible in the redzone work today. None of 3 qb's threw a pick.

Monday shouild have read "Sunday".

We could probably package up Moore and Garrard and pry Gabbert away from Jax. That will give is two young promising talents.

Phins78,

Just pick your battles. Dont fight when the opposition wants to fight. Fight when you've already gained the hill top. LOL

If Gabbert's the same terrified qb of a year ago, Henne should be the Jags starting qb shortly before game 5. Ive never seen pro qb play as terrified as Gabbert played last season.

I think as a fanbase we have every legitimate right to gripe about the state of the Franchise under present ownership and F.O.

Like every diehard Fin Fan I'm usually very optimistic from the offset of FA till opening day but under Boss Ross it has become a taxing exercise. Since the 66 inaugural season we've never had 3 straight loosing seasons and with all due respect to those that will point out our post season futility over the last decade at least those teams always flashed promise and hope.

We had an owner that love him or hate him always got his man replacing the legend he inherited from the Robbie's with 2 others who we all felt were right for getting back to the top of the heap and a College legend in his own right alot felt was going to bring Jimmy Johnson type success with him to the Pro Level in Saban.

There was always a flicker of hope that the team was looking to turn the corner aggressively and the product on the field always seemed to tease you with the promise of an improved next Yr. or at the least a run at the Division with very few exceptions!!

You say the whining on the blog is not going to affect Ross or his crew of flunky's one way or the other and in that regard I agree but here are a couple of things Boss Ross can't afford to ignore.

1) In 2010's final games Vs. Det. and Buffalo we had somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 in the stands. There seemed after a very hyped opener last season that attendance started to slip again. Ross whose fortune is tied up in a down N.Y. Real Estate market can't afford to have his stadium under 50% capacity.

2) Some will argue ignorantly that the TV Revenue bails him out which isn't the case 100%. The TV allocation is 120 Million of which per the new CBA requires that 90% of those funds be used on the CAP. It's attendance that covers the Stadium upkeep, Federal and State Taxes, the Davie Facility, team H.Q. and the endless parade of employee's. It's the reason the Miami Dolphins are one of only a handful NFL teams in the RED for a few straight seasons now.

3) Nobody is whining about the QB's and WR's we can get now there questioning the logic behind the ones we did get and IF you are Ross you prefer to at least have the whiners right now because worse is a lack of interest in his product all together .

I've been going to T.C. since the early 80's, it's sort of a tradition for me and every Yr. come hell or high water it's packed, standing room only!! This Yr. I'll watch hardknocks alone to see how they cover the empty, dead atmosphere I saw out there. It reminded me of the 98 Marlins after the fire sale and if it keeps spilling over into the stands Ross will feel the squeeze were local Corp. Raiders and there are plenty in South Fla. will be looking to pounce on the weak ownership.

Coalition, our rookies are the best in a long time, I'm optimistic! Darryl D I envy your Montana summer and fall, enjoy! Preseason games are google to crucial for evaluating players, coaches and play book!

does anybody in their right mind think we have any chance to finish ahead of Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Texans, Chargers, Broncos, Bengals, Raiders?

screw trying to win 8 games with broken horses. start ryan and get ahead for next season.

Delete google from my last comment, how'd that get there?

Not me, at this point I want to see progress and hope. A solid foundation in coaching and player selection. This is still a multi-year project.

Redsky,

We've been wishing for hope and progress for far too long. A 7-8 win season this year is least of whats expected. Tannehill's supposed to be the future. Therefore, beginning in 2013, anything less than 10 wins a season will be unacceptable.

Wishing for hope anmd progress seemed to go hand in hand with wishing for a franchise qb(since the close of the Marino era). Tannhill's supposed to be that. So beginning 2013, anything less than 10 wins a year is unacceptable.

If Tannehill isnt the starter by 2013, Ireland needs the boot. You dont draft a qb #8 overall to sit until year 3.

I have to stop and think sometimes. How many starters do we have that would start for other teams??

We have put together a second string team of back ups. To fully expect this team to contend? its hard to grasp that reality. Sorry!!! I do fully expect to be proven wrong please prove me wrong my finss

Hey Matthew, your entire rambling post is irrelevant.

If you can't decipher whining from stating the truth, perhaps you should shut the hell up.

If you can't handle it, don't comment. Think before you type! Or better yet, DON'T TYPE!

As for you, I live in the real world. If I'm going to talk Dolphins with you, I want to talk about the Dolphins as they sit today.

Not how you hope & pray they will be in a few years.

Get your head outta yer as* & wake up. If you are too sensitive to handle the truth about your team sucking the last decade, that's your issue. Don't hate me for bursting your bubble & telling you how it REALLy is.

Thank you & good riddance!

Dude you're hilarious.

My comments to the 2 laughers above.

1. Dude, you're not.

2. Don't make promises you can't keep. Mr. I'm done with this blog. What happens when your amish savior disappears? You come running back.

Be a man of your word and disappear. It was nice without you & your crew.

YG
Great points... And yes I agree we are a PHINS family. Let's respect each others opinion please! Anyways YG. Do you think the offense playing the defense all the time will show improvement against each other, because they know what type scheme they running??? Or it doesn't really matter and it can be use as a measuring stick, or playing against each other you reach a progress point, because of it's the same scheme all the time! Like to read your opinion YG.

Being optimistic on the Fins now is like being pessimistic after winning a SB. Its insane.

Reality Sucks

YG I don't want to fight with anyone and won't. It's a waste of time. I didn't even make it to the hill before the bullets started flying!(lol) I was here for years talking football, then someone showed up and started attacking me for whatever reason. I left because it got bad. But I should have just stayed and ignored him. I contribute to a couple other blogs as well and haven't encountered anything like it.

If the guy wants to start stalking again and it makes him happy then I'm happy for him, at least it's giving him some entertainment. I'm just not going to debate about anything other than football. I'm not here to prove anything, just want to talk about our team with fellow fans.

Ahhh, Mando's blog is BACK BABY!!! The knives are out, lines being drawn, blood gets boiling, I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!!!

I'll try to sidestep any of the "silly" bogus arguments. Let's stick to facts. Miami hasn't won a Playoff game in over a decade. THAT'S A FACT! Miami has used the same, sorry offensive philosophy this ENTIRE time in the wilderness (boring, run first, vanilla). Miami has not drafted well (in terms of playmakers).

That's where we've been folks. You can cry, or hate on truth-tellers, but they are still telling the truth.

But, to the "truth-tellers", if you not mentioning that something "seems" to have changed, however minimal in your opinion, you are starting to believe your own b.s.

Truth is this is a pivotal year. Could Philbin be Cameron 2.0, yes. But he could also be the next Shula. We don't have that answer yet. What we do know, if you've read the reports, is things aren't being done the same way. Offense is now innovating, defense is now playing more aggressively. Practices are different, philosophies are different, things are different.

It may amount to a hill of beans. Sure, we might be 6-10 again this year. But, we could also be in Year 1 of a TRUE renovation. I don't believe we have a Playoff-caliber team right now. But I think lots of the players we have COULD be on a playoff-caliber team with the right addition of 3-5 more playmakers and gamechangers.

My hope is Philbin teaches the system that WILL lead to Playoffs this year. And next year Ireland (or whomever the GM is if he gets fired) adds some gamechangers to push the team over the hump. It's just a hope, but being hopeful isn't any less credible than being pessistic. Feel however you want to feel, the important thing is what the TEAM does, not what we say here about what they do.

I was ready the PHINS PHANATIC , and the writer Santamaria posted that Matt Moore sets the bar, for the starting QB because he has a better QB rating, base on last year! Really? And that the PHINS are better than. The jets and bills! I will agree on we better than the bills and jets, but Matt being the better QB?? I disagree IMO. The battle to start will be between Gerrard and Tannehill
If Tannehill wasnt here than different story,
But Ross wants Tannehill to start we will see, but I have a gut feeling Tannehill starts because of Ross and JI! Not because of philbin wants to!!

After they lose the opener the chant will be "Barf for Barkley"

Other fun football games online are the Soccawhacka video game, Head Action Baseball, Rooney on the Rampage, and the Monkey Begin Sport. Also, you will find more severe game titles also and illustrations will be the Complete and Shift Football Training Video game as well as the Pixel Kick.
