Kalil signing today may impact Tannehill talks

Minnesota Vikings first-round pick Matt Kalil signed today.

The deal had no offset language, according to various reports.

That's good news for Ryan Tannehill as his representative continues to talk to the Dolphins about signing their deal without offset language. Offset language allows a team to recoup some of the guaranteed money it pays a particular player in the event that player becomes a bust and is cut before his contract of four or five years (depending on a club option) expires.

The negotiations between the Vikings and Kalil was reportedly being held up by those teams insisting on offset language. The Vikings caved on the issue.

The Dolphins negotiations with Tannehill have included a team desire to include offset language in the deal. According to profootballtalk.com, the offset language issue is what is holding up Tannehill from agreeing with Miami. I have confirmed that is correct.

Obviously if other teams are backing off the demand for the language, the agent for Tannehill can also make the case his client shouldn't have the language in his deal.

So we'll see where this goes as the Dolphins are trying to get Tannehill signed in time for tomorrow's first practice. (Players already reported to camp today.)

With that said, consider this: It is absolutely wise for the Dolphins to try to protect themselves from the possibility that Tannehill might become a bust. But pushing the issue to the extreme that he misses significant training camp time starts things off on bad footing, thus increasing the possibility that Tannehill would be a bust.

It's a catch 22.

The Dolphins nonetheless remain optimistic a deal can be reached by the end of the weekend.

Offset language? Wasnt the new cba designed to protect teams against rookie busts?

Fin Nation was already split on drafting Tannehill #8. Offset language when Ireland/Ross was so sure he's a "sure thing" they drafted him #8? Folks, something in the milk isnt sounding aint right about this.

Wasnt the new rookie pay scale clause of the new cba designed to "bust-proof" teams financially on first rd signings? Something in the milk aint clean.

Walker, some may say hey those are mighty fine grades, but when you really look at it you realize you’re playing against A QBs and other challenges along the way. We all know we need a QB who can do something special from time to time.

I gave a B- to the entire QB group and some may say are you nuts. No not really, Moore played very well down the stretch, Garrard has had success when healthy and Tannehill has all the tools you look for in a QB. It’s a good group. But not elite like the A teams. A and B- is not close enough to win it all. The QB has to play above that or have a team that is sick in other areas.

What did u have for dinner?

Wished Ireland had followed my draft plan. Trade down, gain a extra 2nd rd pick, and take DeCastro. Use the one of the two 2nd rd picks at right tackle.

Take the qb 1st rd from the 2013 rookie qb class. Adding DeCastro(RG) and perhaps still Martin(RT) at bleast gives the 2013 1st rd rookie qb a very formiddable oline to protect him in starting right away.

My Pleasure Son.

ALoco,

Lobster roll? Sounds like a long ago one night stand I had. The skank stole my wallet and left a nest of lobsters. Just not the edible kind, if you know what I mean.

Lending new credence to the term "lobster roll". LOL

OHIO'S BLOG IS LIKE GOING TO THE MALL........EVERY THING THERE IS BORING

ALoco,

Has a skank ever lobstered rolled you? LOL

They are still working out the language in the CBA. It's going to take a Couple Seasons for them to put the rookie Contracts in order. Remember this is the 2nd yr of the CBA.

Yea, Getting Decastro and Trading down would've been nice, but Everyone in the NFL knew the Fins were going after T-Hill.

My Pick other than T-Hill would've been Luke at #8. Some don't seem to Agree with Me but a Great MLB is almost as Important as a Great QB. Luke is one of the Special ones.

DB/YG,

You know it's been bad when the best thing to happen for us all offseason was TS becoming Jets OC, although there version of the WC with Tebow as the trigger man will be better than what we had with R.Brown and good to see you around been a while, fruity pebbles and chocula with Aloco at lunch time, classic!

ALoco @ 10:10 PM,

You read my mind. My next question to you was going to be is Ohio's blog still the world's #1 ranked snorefest. LOL

LOL!

YG/FIN4LIFE.....

I GO THERE TO READ ODIN'S POSTS THEY R ALWAYS VERY ENJOYABLE .........ALSO I LIKE JS IN LA ....OTHER THAN THAT ,GOD BLESS THE OHIO STATE ...

Dashi,

On the subject of training camp, I heard there will be a cover charge because of hard knocks, BAD PR move!! For a team which used to be KING OF THE HILL in S.Fla sports now loosing it's fanbase to the HEAT. I have gone to training camp every Yr. since I was 12, close to 30 freakin Yrs. but I refuse to pony up for a practice.

Dashi,

Kuechly would have been a great pick. Tackling machione for sure. But we are already a upper top 10 against the run defense. Also Dansby suffices for now. Just a little expenmsive in terms of production vs cost.

Just would have liked to have seen an oline that could be top 5 in the nfl for the next 10yrs. Both running the ball and protecting the passer. Also gives a great chance of winning even if the qb is slightly above average.

Aloco,

What say you about a cover charge for practice, not even a cheap egg roll buffet. How are the training camps in Boston with the hoodie running the show??

FIN4LIFE...A REAL FAN WOULD PAY WHATEVER TO GO TO CAMP AND SPEND 12 DOLLARS FOR A SLICE OF PIZZA ,JUST FOR THE LOVE OF TEAM,,,,COME ON .......

I'm not one to Agree with my Boy Homey, but Doesn't Texas have 3 of the top 10 Most Obese Cities in the US.

I think U misunderstand the Meaning Of Phat. Women in Miami are Phat not Fat.

Go to the Beach or Walk downtown and Tell me there is More Fat Women than Good Looking Women.

Sfla is The Mecca for Fine Women.

Aloco,

If HBO included a free buffet or Pizza I might consider it but no dice plus I hear it will be $30 per person.

fin4life,

Good to see you're still around too buddy! Also, I see a 6-7 win season.

Garrard's never been a perrenial playoff qb. Moore's not quite consistent enough. Tannehill's still vine green. It will be an adventure this season to eek out 6-7 wins. Playoff's not happening in 2012.

IT'S FREE IN BOSTON TO SEE THE BEST QB ON EARTH TOM BRADY BUT IN FL THE 48 STATE IN EDUCATION AND WHERE NO REAL STAR PLAYERS TO WATCH ,YOU HAVE TO PAY MONEY ??????????????

AND TAKE A PICTURE WITH ...OSCAR ,,,,,

I think John Jerry will be cut. Guy just doesnt get it. Came to minicamp out of shape. Sounds like a guy glad to make nfl money, not be a nfl player.

He's already been a two year disappointment then follows that up by coming to minicamp out of shape in year 3. 3rd year, 3rd rd bust soon to come.

DASHI.......PLEASE EXPAND ON SUBJECT OF (( THE FINE WOMEN IN SF ))...

BLONDS OR BURNEETS ?

Having to sign virtual scrub right guard Eric Stienbech and Tannehill still looking far from instant starter material. Im sure Ireland's rethinking passing on DeCastro.

YG,

To add to your comment about Dansby and his cost we could have also had Maualuga back in 09 as well. I am beginning to believe that aside from rebuilding were also restructuring financially which aside from all the PR spin is the reason we moved B.Marsh and his escalator of a contract. Y.Bell as well who was on the wrong side of 30 and it won't seriously suprise me if MLB is a position of target next draft to move Dansby's money. It's why Playoffs won't be coming for at least another couple of seasons, it's a complete overhaul with Ireland still learning on the job which leaves me uneasy but it is a must when analyzing the CAP flexibility of the Pats as opposed to the CAP strapped Fins.

ALoco,

So many fine women in the state of Florida period(not only S.Beach) that guys here sometimes get laid with an ugly chick just to do something different. Even the ugly chicks here have great bodies. LOL

He's already been a two year disappointment then follows that up by coming to minicamp out of shape in year 3. 3rd year, 3rd rd bust soon to come.

Yesterday's Gone | July 26, 2012 at 10:32 PM

He's been the biggest letdown I felt after watching him in the last 3 games last Yr. he was going to come in this Season and finally claim a job on the right side of the OL.

YG........
I HEAR THE MARRIED WOMEN IN FL ARE BETTER THAN THE SINGLE ONES B/C THEIR HUSBANDS LOVE TO SHARE THEM WITH OTHER MEN .......

IF THAT TRUE ,I AM MOVING TO FL NEXT WEEK AFTER THE LOSTER SALE IS OVER ,,

fin4life,

With no great young prospects to plug in at right guard(Jerry's looking increasingly more bust). Right guard may still need to be a high priority nexdt year(2013). No late than 2nd rd to get the desired quality needed at the position.

Drafting a olineman(Jerry) 3rd rd a team's more likely to find a quality backup than quality starter. It's not Jerry's fault. Ireland got what he pid for in 2010's draft. A quality backup(Jerry) being forced to become a quality starter.

F4L,

I agree Pay to Watch Practice? We talking about Practice. I wouldn't go either. Ur Paying to sit in the Sun in the Hottest Month of the Year. I'm Straight, They pay mando to do that and he Does a Great Job Reporting what he sees. I might drop bye and see one.

YG,

Agreed a Dominant O-Line would've been great. But Ur telling Me L.Jones and Barkley are better Prospects as QB's?

L.Jones is a Oklahoma System QB and we know how they turn Out. Bradford was the best they ever had and he's not that Good. Plus, he has No Knee's Already, Super Injury Prone. Below Avg Athlete and Below Avg Arm Strength.

Barkley isn't even 6 ft tall. Has Average Arm Strength and Above Average Accuracy's. Plus he's Playing with 2-1st rd WR's. He's Maxed out his potential Already.

If those 2 wanted to come out they should've done it this year. They both had good Seasons and are Underclassmen(More Draft Value tha a Sr.). The Problem is they know they both will drop like Rocks Once the Dog & Pony Show we Call the Combine Happens.

I will bet with Anyone Barkley or L.Jones Won't be the 1st QB taken in next Years draft. Someone Will Come Along and Beat them Both Out. A Better NFL Prospect.

The New CBA Behooves any College FB player to Come out Early if they have the Potential to be drafted. U don't make Money with ur 1st Contract anymore in the NFL. The Younger and Faster U reach that 2nd Contract the More Money stand on Making.

ALoco,

It's true, marrtied men in Fla do love sharing thier wives. Just dont let him know that he's sharing his wife with you.

Remember, Fl is a right to use deadly force state. LOL

Dashi,

Almost every expert agreed had Barkley and Landry come out in 2012, Tannehill would have been a 2nd rd qb max. Basically hyad Landry and Barkley come out this year both would have been drafted ahead of Tannehill. No question.

So, even though you cast aspersions on Barkley and Landry(yes well deserved)experts agreed both were better pro prospects than Tannehill. Go figure. LOL

Actually Landry was near the top in cream of the crop 2011 college qb's until he lost his top wr and deep threat for the year. I forget the wr's name right now, but Landry's declined seemed timed with losing his #1 wideout and deepthreat.

WOMEN ARE THE BEST .....................

NOT UGLY MEN LIKE OSCAR,

Don't see this as a catch 22. It doesn't look like he is going to start, so if he misses a week or two and the Dolphins can protect themselves in case he doesn't turn out it is a wise move.

If Tannehill is so sure he will be great then why not sign?

I don't fault the Dolphins here. It seems to me that they have the future of the club in mind.

Dashi,

I saw plenty of Okla. and USC games last Season and think the real knock on Barkley is following Leinert, J.D. Booty and of course the up and down C.Palmer. Like the run the U went on in the 80's and 90's their considered products of over the top talent across the board which is precisely what L.Jones is but I believe your overstating the talent around Barkley last season.

In watching Okla. everything seems to be a swing pass or short route the WR's or RB's get alot of YAC out of. L.Jones is even removed from the field in tight in the redzone were they played a behemoth Fr. QB nicknamed the Belldozer. Jones has J.Harrington type hyperbole going in full gear and should stay there considering he gets everybody back intact next season breaking the buyer in the 2013 draft.

Barkley played with a predominantly Fr. group at the skill spots, his primary deep threat WR and both RB's all Freshman forcing him to improvise on broken routes and blitz situations. I watched him Vs. Luck and believe he out played this years #1 pick hands down. I then watched him have an insane game Vs. Org. Ducks which housed Luck the week before. He also played a much better game Vs. Cal than Luck did. He is a very accurate and a heady player who led a very young team.

Don't see this as a catch 22. Tannehill isn't going to start this season and probably won't start unless the Dolphins really hit rock bottom. So what if he misses a few weeks in a contract dispute? If the Dolphins can protect themselves from a multi-million dollar possible bust I don't see why they shouldn't do it. Or at least make the effort.

YG,

Agreed Pre-Draft Barkley and L.Jones were Favored over T-Hill. Most Mock Draft's had Jones or Barkley going to Miami. What I'm Saying is Once the Measurable's start Coming Out. They Would've Dropped like Rocks. U'll see next Year. They Might have Some Intangibles, But they Lack the Skills to Play the Bills at the Next Level. They Don't have the Look of A Franchise QB. And Neither One of them Is going to Sling it 50-70 yds in the Air. Their Upside is Real Limited.

F4L,

I Agree Barkley is a Great College QB, but he reminds me alot of Colt McCoy. I thought Colt was going to be the Next Drew Brees. Short Guy, But Extremely Accurate and is a Great Leader.

But What happen With Colt? He has a College Arm not a Pro Arm. Same With Barkley. The Difference between Colt and Brees is that Drew can Make all the Throws.

Like Christian Ponder, They gassed him up all last yaer before the Draft for his Amazing Accuracy and Touch(Even though he just has an Avg Arm). In the Nfl U need at least Above Avg Arm Strength to go with ur Accuracy to be an Elite QB. Else that Split Second the Ball hangs in the Air Cause U can't put it on a line from time to time will be Intercepted.

Example Mark Sanchez.

Greetings FINLAND.. I see Mando has returned from his 3 month Vacation..
