The Dolphins weigh progress-stopper vs. production

The Dolphins have a term that they refer to when deciding whether to add a veteran player or not -- "progress stopper."

I heard that term Sunday when talking to team decision-makers about their wide receiver corps. As I write in my column about Miami's receivers the team is weighing whether to add Braylon Edwards to the unit.

Part of the decision-making is outlined in the column. But part of the decision making process has to do whether Edwards, 29, might be a progress stopper for younger players such as Roberto Wallace, Julius Pruitt, Clyde Gates, Marlon Moore, B.J. Cunningham and Jeff Fuller.

The fact is the Dolphins know Edwards is probably better than all those players today. He's more ready to contribute now. And that is not to be sneered at because the Dolphins do want to win this season. The question is will those young players improve fast enough to cause the Dolphins to stand fast with them and let their progress continue rather than going with a more established player.

Me?

I brought up the name Legedu Naanee. He's 28 years old and will be 29 in September. To me, the question of adding Edwards doesn't mean stopping the progress of a young receiver, it means ending the Miami career of Naanee because Edwards would be replacing him on the roster.

A Miami personnel man nodded in agreement when I presented that scenario.

And it is a scenario not presented lightly. Right now Naanee is getting starting receiver reps. He's doing well, really. But he is at his best a 30-catch player. If the Dolphins replaced him with Edwards and get the best there, they've got a 50-to-60 catch player. They have a deep threat. They have a TD threat.

So if you see Miami sign Edwards in the next couple of weeks as is being considered, watch to see how it affects Naanee.

[BLOG NOTE: Check back around noon for the post-practice and post interview update. I was pulling double-duty during the weekend -- writined posts and my column -- so the posts here were not as detailed as I would like. Today I don't have to write a column, so you'll get more play-by-play from practice. Look for it]

[TWITTER NOTE: If you want real-time updates, including an occasional picture or video, follow me on twitter -- that's @armandosalguero -- for instant reaction to what is happening at camp and around other sports.]

{EARLY UPDATE: Brian Hartline (calf) is missing practice again today ... Chris Clemons (knee) has returned to practice today ... Eric Steinbach, who has played all of the 124 games he's started in the NFL at LG, is working at RG today with the second unit.]

"Hate to tell you guys but the Ireland boycott is working. Ticket sales are at a 44 year low."

And this has nothing to do with three years of losing records? :)
You're not saying ticket sales are at a 44 year low because someone is posting "boycott the fins until Ireland is fired" in a newspapers online blog are you?

I believe people are fed up paying for an inferior product and therefore aren't boycotting Ireland but just have no interest in the team, no matter who is the gm . And I would bet you any amount of money that if somehow this team won it's first two or three games people would be pushing each other over to buy tickets.

A couple of wins and a few "wow look at the Dolphins" stories and the bandwagon fans will be lining up at the ticket windows. Our fans aren't as loyal as some other unfortunately. There are teams fans that have had it far worse when it comes to losing and bad gms and still sell out every game.

Lets just face it, people in Miami are bandwagon. Fans of the Heat don't show up to games and when they do they don't come in until the second half. Lebron and Wade had to beg people to get to their seats early because home court advantage was being taken away. But as soon as they proved they could win everyone wanted to be there. And Marlins fans are the worst. And when the Dolphins were pushing for the playoffs and division win 4 years ago you couldn't find an extra ticket. That's just how it is in Miami, there are so many awesome distractions it's hard not to be bandwagon.

I don't see Naanee as some development project star for the future. He's what we have now, that's all.

I also don't see Edwards as our star of the future either. He's the expensive band-aid for the lack of star receiver quality drafting. Both shorter term issues, and neither optimal.

Putting either one on the field nets the same result to me.

Always funny to hear from the guys claiming to 'boycott the Dolphins' and yet but what do they do? They come to a Dolphins football blog where the guys are here to talk about their team when camp has JUST started. Stikes me as VERY strange behaviour!

Guys if you don't want to follow the Dolphins any more knock yourself out. You won't be missed. You contribute nothing to the experience as is. But maybe try to stop telling everyone who they should and shouldn't support.

Mark, from earlier.....yeah I'm really interested to see what Thigpen can bring to the return game. He's EXACTLY the type of guy we've been missing for a long time.

Craig Omar tweeted that Miller is taking some reps as a punt returner and he says the kid has wheels. Combine that with his vision for the hole and we might have our guy there. And then we can carry 6 wrs and 3 rbs no problem which is what I hope they are going to do.

Of course Thigpen working out would be great but I would hate to waste a spot on someone who is one dimensional.

WHY I FEEL I AM READING THE SAME CRAPY POSTS FROM LAST 4 YEARS......

SMAE CRAPPY PLAYERS...

SAME SUBJECTS FROM (( TRUST THE NEW COACH )) , THE SAME CRAB THAT WENT ON WHEN WE HIRES OUR EX PIZZA MAN AS A NEW COACH.........

GUYS;;;;;;;TRY WRITING NEW STUFF ......

WHEN WE HIRED

Save a boycott for something important not any freaking Dolphin game.

Put the best talent on the field. Period. If NaaNee has enough potential then give him a roster spot. If not then it's also likely the Dolphins can find a replacement in the future of equal caliber.

One refreshing thing ALoco you have to admit is Philbin's pressers. He's more open, has control of the English language, it's a pleasure listening to him.

On the Edwards thing, I don't know, always skeptical picking up a guy who's off an injury. We've already got Steinbeck and Garrard. I wouldn't push our luck unless they think Braylon is the missing piece. I'd prefer Mike Wallace too Mando, but for the right price. I'd personally like to see what some of these young players got (maybe more than we think).

Aloco, What say you, When will drunk Odin wake up?
Will he be in his own voment and urine?

DC.......... ENGLISH LANGUAGE ???????????

RIGHT PRICE ??????????

WHAT IS THE RIGHT PRICE ?????????

WE HAVE BEEN SIGNING PLAYERS IN LAST FEW YEARS FOR THE RIGHT PRICE ,AND WE R STILL IN CELLAR .........

BUT ,TO LIKE A COACH BASED ON HIS ENGLISH??????.......

PLEASE GIVE ME A SOMALI COACH WHO CAN TAKE US TO THE PLAYOFFS......

COALITION.......

I LOVE ODIN AND I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE HIM ALONE AND ATTACK OSCAR INSTEAD .....

We also gave away 2 #2 picks and a helluva lot of dough to Brandon Marshall and that didn't work either. We're still in the cellar because we never changed our philosophy (until this year). You've got to give them time to work. It starts with the HC. Instead of wasting time figuring out how to keep unnecessary secrets, Philbin can worry about strategy and developing his players correctly . Be patient brother, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Agreed DC. You all need to turn the page, Philbin did, the players did. this is a new notebook completly. We need to give this a chance before trashing it. Yes Ireland is the same, but this draft was nothing like older drafts which means the new blood is influencing the decisions.

Aloco, Could you Please get Odin into re-hab?
Maybe he can go to the one Armando just got out of.

DC,,,,, BEST THING YOU WROTE THIS YEAR ......

(( WHAT DOESN'T KILL US MAKES US STRONGER )),...

We should not sign Mike Wallace, it would cost us over 10 million a year in cap space for a deep threat, I doubt he would amount to much on our roster, definitely not for the kind of money he wants, plus draft pick compensation to the steelers. We are tight to the cap this year, next year we will have boat loads of money to spend & hopefully can pick up a couple of quality pieces for next season...

WE SHOULD SALUTE ARMANDO FOR COMING BACK AND GETTING A NEW JOB AT THAT TIRE SHOP .......

COALITION......

PICTURE THIS;;;;;;

Ireland is going for the record "Most Busts Ever" by a GM lol

Promichael you are a simple minded poster. A typical simple minded person would look at something on the outside and buy it without really knowing what is in the box. I'm sorry but have you not been watching these young receivers play for the past two and three years. These kids have got some bite in them and they have progressed quite well if you ask me. They need to be given a serious shot this preseason to see how well they will match up against starting caliber defenses in some of our 3 and 4 wide sets. To waive Legadu would make the most sense.

Hi Guys...i rarely post these days due to all the garbage on the site. However I still read almost every day and wanna shout out to guys like Mark in Toronto, CraigM, Kris, Beerphins,Aloco, Rob in Oc...and many others..I agree with Mando that BE is an upgrade on Nannee....but what is the issue with WALLACE....its reported that a 3rd would do the dealllthis is a NO BRAINER...so I am reading this incorrectly or is there another factor???

wallace is canned tuna without big ben.
