« Dolphins coach Joe Philbin: It's on the players | Main | Daniel Thomas is so far simply disappointing »

Chris Cooley available as a tight end upgrade

The Redskins released tight end Chris Cooley today.

He is 30 years old. He is a former three-time Pro Bowl player. He said at his departure press conference, "I can still play at a high level." Oh, and catches the football.

ESPN's Adam Schefter just said teams such as Oakland, the New York Jets and Dolphins need tight end help and could use Cooley.

To me, he would be an upgrade for Miami's tight end corps. He would be help for Ryan Tannehill. Moreoever, this is what I wrote last week when I first heard of the possibility Cooley might become available.

That's all I have to say.

I don't know. I mean if we could surrender a high draft pick to get him, and then trade him in a year for a lesser pick then I'd say go ahead and get the guy. But just signing a useful free agent doesn't sound much like Ireland's M.O.

Fair enough jrljr2. You make a great point about the injuries. We had an olinemen (LG) a couple of years back (can't remember his name!) who was a great player but had injury issues and his roster spot took up space most of the time. I'm hoping against hope in this scenario, that Cooley gets through at least 8 games before getting hurt, that will give Clay and Egnew some more time. We have three young TEs that could use his intelligence to become better players. So I see the risk and also the reward. The reward is outweighing the risk in my mind right now because even on the bench I know the guy can help Tannehill, Clay, Egnew, and Yeatmen.

That's where I'm at but as you say we will see. And no worries man, you're going to get what you want because I just don't see this as something Ireland would pull the trigger on. Omar made a great point in that there will be younger tes on the market by fri with more upside. Let the churning begin. I literally just sighed.

Ireland could have signed Braylon Edwards who'd instantly be the #1 guy here. Instead they signed Steinbach who lasted 2 weeks. Meanwhile, Edwards was picked up by Seattle and is playing his way to being named a starter.

That tells you all you need to know about what utter failure this organization is at talent evaluation and talent acquisition. I'm not holding my breath on them with Cooley. They might actually improve the team if they sign him and we all know that their personnel decisions seem calculated to make the team worse than it is.

I can't wait to see how many busts they draft next year with their picks. A franchise record is my bet.

Cooley has been in the league 8 years and has only missed games in two of those 8 years. So I'm not sure about "injury prone" but the injuries came in the past three years. The doctors can decide if it's relevant or if they are freak things that happened and not likely to reoccur. He was injured in 09 played 6 games. 16 games no injury in 10'. The injured last season and only played in 5 games. Healthy so far this year.

Clue I don't think YG was comparing their stats because you're right, not even close. But he makes a great point about TEs and how they are used to help along young QBs toward the end of their careers. And Cooley is only 30, he's not 36 like Gonzalez. Gonzalez went to Atlanta when he was 33 and it was a great thing for Matt Ryan. Tannehill has a bunch of 3's, 4's, and 5's,,,,,just ask Ireland. :)

Bra1n I'm confused, you're blaming the entire organization for Ireland's stupidity? Maybe we should just blame Ireland and Ross and leave out the poor ball boy, I don't think he had anything to do with this. hahaha

I'm out guys, enjoy your night.

YG,

4 million for 4 years for Cooley! Bro are fffin high!!

Keep smoking that weeb bra!

Wake up please!!!

That is so not like you! Cooley is finished.

Is this brilliant receiver you are bringing in a 1, or a 1a?

Is he an acorn? If not, we'll pass.

As far as the Braylon stuff, I can now easily see that Philbin is pulling the strings here.

He wants young no nonsense guys that he knows and can develop.

In his mind the Dolphins are rebuilding.

He wants this to be his team not retreats of Tony's.

What players the past 4 years in GB were running off at the mouth and causing issues? None. Not with Driver, Jennings, and Rodgers on Offense.

See, when People get bigger than their breeches, they tend to bust.

Oscar,

What is YG smoking?

Cooley was scheduled to count $6 mil against cap + he was last player that wasn't a shanahan player. I would fly him to dallas and play him tomorrow.

If it was odin, I would know. I don't think YG is allowed to smoke yet.

I think it is pretty easy to see that Coach Joe doesn't take well to players with past antics and BS. He wants leader on and off the field.

Mark my words Dansby will be next!

If he underperforms, bye bye!

Sorry but Ireland is afraid to turn the hands loose to go out and bid for him is my guess.

Sorry too smart a move for Ireland.

Ok ok ok....
We trade this player we have a bunch of draft picks next year we may pickup a cast off from another team blah blah blah!! But Jeffery still the one picking the players, if the PHINS are going to trade players that doesn't fit Philbin MO. And trade them away than Stupid Ross. Needs to fire JI. And hire a GM with a eye for talent, a good talent evaluator
I keep reading that next year the PHINS are going to be way under the cap and with all this extra picks...ok great but JI can't be the one picking choosing the players!!!! NOOOO
Ross please not JI please!!

The best GM move Ireland has done for the Fins is trade a fifth rounder for Reggie Bush!.

Clipboard
It's a matter of time, but I think Dansby doesn't any part of this dysfunctional orginaztion, he is not happy here and he keeps running his mouth because IMO he wants the PHINS to trade him, the writing is on the wall. Can anyone blame him?

The Phins WILL NOT win a game...0-16!!!!

Forget Cooley, and forget any waiver-wire WRs.

Why? Xs & Os reasons? Matchups? Contracts?

Nope........we won't get 'em cause we're the Mighty Mighty Dolphins. mired in mediocrity. JOKE FRANCHISE.

No analysis works other than 'what increases our laughing-stock value.

Can't block

Take Cooley, but at the expense of one of the 5 wideouts - not Fasano, Egnew or Clay.

For these players, it's always next game or next season. The time is NOW! Get Cooley and let Fadropso know that he can be replaced.

someone mentioned calling up retired dolphins and see what happens. First call mcduffie and see how that turf toe is doing. Then we call tony martin to be the deep threat. He left the game relatively healthy right? Cant call orande due to him being involved in the lawsuit against nfl on concussion issues. Sorry tannehill but we gotta call Dan and assure him we will do everything possible to give him a complete oline and get him some old and new favorite targets. He is gonna Love bess! And he has a stable of running backs that make plays( FINALLY!) Raiders went to the superbowl with octogenarians, why can't we. Right?

Tannehill should beg Philbin to let him sit and learn for a year or two because whoever is QB behind the current Dolphin O-line is going to get whoever the starter is injured. Too bad for Tannehill too......he's going to get shell-shocked.

Phons that would be Justin Smiley

Justin smiley. Jamie nails. Take yer pick.

Armando you are so predictable. Next we should get TO. Your like a cow and grass on the other side of the fence.

Daang

We’ll never improve by picking up other teams discards off the waiver wire. And we’lll never improve as long as Ireland is employed by the Dolphins. It’ll take 3-4 years AFTER he’s fired to clean up his mess and field even a competitive team. No light at the end of the tunnel for this franchise.

TO and Cooley are completely uncomparable genius. You are like an idiot blogger who doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground.

Pal, we were raised in Football by the Best of the very Best and we will accept nothing else but That.

If not That, take the Team somewhere else except here.

Let's begain the new Dolphins Battle Cry
"NEXT YEAR's Draft"
It's been the battle cry for 10 years now, Why change Now.

usually a fan base is excited about the prospects for a successful season ahead. this org is dead in the water, offering nothing in the way of hope. we need a complete overhaul at the top.

But if you decide to take the Team out of SoFla, remember, the name Dolphins stays here. You can call it the Tunas, the Swordfish, whatever the fuc- you want, but the name Dolphins stays here. Capisce?

careless if they moved them out. be great to get rid of all the cancer and get a new franchise in a couple years

Ireland is a moron. He only makes moves that either downgrades the team or that he can get less value than what it cost him.It is a concept that he developed himself

OSCER NOW POSTING FOR 14 STRIGHT HOURs, STARTED AT 5:30 THIS MORNINGG.
OSKAR YOU STILL NEED 21 HOUR TO BEAT THE GREAT ODIN WHO POSTED FOR 35 STRIGHT HOURS, BUT YUOR GETING CLOSE TO FLIPER BREAD/YESTERDAY GONE NON STOP POST OF 25 HOURS.

GOOD LUCK/

Cooley is not a great te, but he is good enough to sign to a 2 year deal. Tanny needs some vet experience to help him. Hopefully a decent vet wr gets the ax also. I can't believe they would start a rookie qb without any receiving leadership.

DOPHINS AND THE MOVIE "MAJOR LEAGUE" ARE THE SAME.

btw, where is odin?

I just sprayed her whole back porch down with Pam.

Guy's it already looks like a long season before it even started.
What's happend to the Phins?
Is it true Jeff Ireland might be the Devil?
What are the answers?

Lubrican.....HOHOHO!

Armando, the only upgrade you could realistically weigh in on is an upgrade to your wardrobe. The wardrobe that keeps your job at the Herald. The wardrobe that allows you to continue pleasing the men in places of authority that you "amuse". Because you don't know anything about what an upgrade would be on a football team.

Cooley 6 TDs in last 4 seasons.

Fasano 18 TDs in last four seasons.

Cooley has 3.8 mil contract is 30 and has a bad knee. Peaked in 2007. He's done. ZERO chance.

CHRIS,,

DO YOU STILL BELIEVE THE 11 WINS ?

Interesting how Kris and odin appear and disappear at the same time.

I just wish Ireland would get us a decent TE and a top WR, so he can silence all the haters. Come on... Make the trades!!!!

EVERY YEAR ,A FIGHT BETWEEN THE HC AND OUR GARAGE MANAGER STARTS BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS ,,,

YOU KNOW WHO ARE THE WINNERS FROM SUCH FIGHT ??????

THE LPOUSY PLAYERS WE HAVE AND THEIR CONTRACTS...YHEY JUST COME TO PLAY W/NO HEART AND BLAME THE MANAGEMENT AND THE COACHING STAFF....

Miami Dolphins fans, the only fans who hate their team because it's the cool thing to do.

You Fireland freaks should realize that the guy is the ultimate team player and pursues/signs/cuts/trades guys who his coach is in agreement with.

On a side note, I know it won't happen under Philbin, but wouldn't it be neat if they were in a hurry up, 3rd play in or so they no huddle to the wildcat with Daniel Thomas (former qb recruit of UF) in the backfield, Tanny out wide (we all know he was a pretty decent wide out at A&M) and Bush in motion? I think it would be interesting.

So long cry babies. I will root for my team year after year, I don't care if they lose them all, I'll still be there rooting, taking the losses hard because that's what fans are supposed to do. And WHEN they get better I will celebrate.

Somewhere along the way people stopped being fans and cheering for their team no matter what. Somewhere along the way people began to feel entitled to victories, to think that they knew better than professionals. At some point is seems that being able to talk smack to the opposing teams and defend your teams suckiness became what it was all about. Oh that and FANTASY football. No thanks, I prefer my football real.
