Dolphins are not ready for the regular season

On the bright side ... the regular season is still two weeks away.

The dim reality ... it's going to take longer than two weeks to make the Dolphins even halfway decent. But it wasn't all terrible.

And, as I wrote in my column for today's Miami Herald, the starters on defense kept the Falcons out of the end zone and showed some progress.

"It looked more like the defense I thought we'd be seeing," coach Joe Philbin said.

Otherwise, this 23-6 preseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons was painful to watch. The Dolphins look like a bad team right now. They play like a bad team right now.

"Don't ask me for answers, I just block," guard Richie Incognito said half-kiddingly, half-seriously. "It's a situation right now where it's preseason and we're trying to find our indentity and you have to go watch the tape and figure out what's wrong. This is the time to correct it.

"We have two weeks to work. We have two weeks to fix what we did wrong. We have to find rhythm on offense and find a way to put the ball in the end zone."

Two weeks to turn things around. For a receiver corps -- tight ends included -- that has shown practically zero improvement this preseason, the only way we see a turnaround is if we see a fresh set of players.

I'm not giving up on the youngsters. But some guys simply are who they are. The fact is this corps has struggle so much that Brian Hartline's chances of making the team have improved while he's been injured and not playing.

No one made plays this night. No one. In truth, there were seven dropped passes -- three by starting tight end Anthony Fasano.

"The coaches told us that coming in, they want someone who is going to start it off for us," Legedu Naanee said. "Nobody grabbed that tonight, we need to get back to work and make sure the next time we have the opportunity to make plays."

Quarterback Ryan Tannhill was not good against Atlanta. He had a 37.9 quarterback rating while he completed only 11 of 27 passes. But you give him the four or five passes that were dropped and suddenly his numbers look more acceptable.

Despite that, Tannehill tried to strike a typically positive chord.

"We did some things better than we did last week," he said. "And we did some things not as good as last week. I thought we improved. The line did a great job.

"We couldn't find a rhythm. We just need to be more consistent in my play and the offense as a whole. We need to be more consistent."

The regular season is coming. The Dolphins are not ready

I think the only meaningful questions are (1) Will Ross fire Ireland this year? And (2) With more Ireland drafts/trades, can this team be any worse?

Wo where are all the Matt Flynn lovers? Losing starting job to 3rd round rookie Wilson. I guess it was smart no to just ha tha man millions of dollars for one good game.

After watching us so far in the pre-season the only thing I can say is, take the under.

Not even the whole season be enough for the WR to improve. Keep Bess and fire the rest of them. But since that won't happen, this is exactly what we'll see in the next four months.
Sorry for Tann, he will have to face the media every week with the usual stupid questions they ask, and find a way to get away from it. Questions like Salguero's.

You same fools said all the same about Speilman. He has done well in Minnesota.

You said Dom Capers was a joke, old school failure. He has done well in Green Bay.

Just maybe known of you know jack sheet?

Tannehill has been a huge dissapointment. He is just not ready for the NFL. Doesnt look anything like a 1st rd QB.

@6:33 good imitation OC. Even got the name thing.

Dashi agrees with ur assessment of the Wr's. Gates still might make the team.

On the game. The game was close on the part that mattered most. The first half.

The fins could've been leading if naanee and fasano can catch the ball.

Don't give me this heavyball crap. Marino thru lasers at Wr's and they caught it. Cause they knew if they didn't they would be repercussions for their action.

Bess caught the ball

How are these clowns gonna win a single game? How?

The NFL has been constituted in such a way as to basically mandate parity. When an entity is incapable of achieving what has been designed for it--Well, that is incomprehensible. Look at EVERY single team in the NFL and you will note that since 2000 they have all at least had their moments. Note I said "MOMENTS" and not
"A moment", a freakish season with an easy schedule and some bizarre luck and then a 1 game beat down in the playoffs does not constitute progress.

I was a season ticket holder for years before moving to the Carolinas in 02, I would prefer if the Dolphins went the way of the LA franchise and no longer existed. That way you would not have the internal suffering I see portrayed on this blog. Everyone could choose a new team to root for and move on. The Dolphins are like having a beautiful wife who has morphed into a colossal piglet who also has the audacity to take up with the pool boy and YET you can't let her go based upon memories and/or some expectation she will revert back to the person she was years ago. This expectation would fly in the face of all the evidence you have seen for over a decade.

PLEASE!!! Move this team to Portland, Las Vegas, London or just drop a franchise and start over. The good people of South Florida do not deserve the stigma of being associated with the Dolphins. Enough is Enough. Use the stadium for tractor pulls and international soccer matches OR demolish that as well.

Minnesota is doing well....LOL....

You mean that ONE season 3 years ago with a pissed off Farve.....

You should really look up the definition of "doing well"....

*threw

NO indentity...ANOTHER TOP FIVE PICK,,THE NFL IS GETTING HARDER TO WIN..A LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG SEASON..FOLKS BUT I'AM STILL GONNA BE A FAN TILL DEATH!

Rob in OC, why would Jeff Ireland draft a wide receiver in the first round? The Dolphins have drafted probably fewer wide receivers in the top three rounds than any other franchise in the last 15 years.

Philbin should adopt a no-wr offense for this season.

Who is going to pay $ to watch this nightmare of a team?

I suggest you compare rosters. Minne has way more talent than we do, not even close. Try denying that.

I judge talent by WINS and LOSSES.....

whats your STANDARD.....

I JUDGE talent by PLAYOFF WINS.....

YOU???????

I'm not sure about Long anymore. I like Pouncey and Cognito. I agree Thomas started to look the part last night. We ain't got much though. As a whole our starters are a top notch 2nd string team.

By the way, the only entertainment on this blog is provided by those who believe it is their responsibility to be "Good FANaticS" and just keep their mouths shut as far as criticism and yell as loud as they can at the games. See, that makes you a "Good FANatic", of course we all know that FANaticS are individuals who BLINDLY follow a person or entity no matter the actions or behavior of whatever it is they love. Their loyalty makes no sense to anyone with an ounce of brain matter but it makes complete sense to the FANatic who will be loyal till the day he or she dies. You really want to be a FANatic of the Miami Dolphins?

By that reasoning you would say we have as much talent as Atlanta.

Try again.

People's views just get narrower by the day.

JAKE LONG STUNK IT UP YESTERDAY..MATT RYAN THE GUY THAT WE PASSED TO GET YOU AND YOU LOOKED AWFUL WITH HIM IN THE SAME GAME..

Have we WON as many games as ATL has over the past 3 SEASONs...I THINK NOT....

try your SELECTIVE READING with someone else....

address the entire post....or stop typing....

WHERE ARE ALL THE MORONS WHO STATED THE WEST COAST OFFENSE DOESN'T NEED A NUMBER 1 WR OR IS ALL ABOUT ROUTE DESIGN???

Told this entire board when Marshall was traded our wr core is and would be the worst in the NFL. If it isn't painfully obvious now it will be by week 1. How could any one honestly believe the offense could make wr's better than what they actually are.

Elite or good wr's are very necessary in this passing league that the NFL has become. Doesn't matter what type of system you run if you have scrubs outside you won't score points....PERIOD!

Phins didn't invest high picks in wr's and will pay the price for it. There aren't any elite wr's coming out in the next draft class either so the Phins cut there own throat by trading Marshall and playing with slow...sluggish...non route running...bad hands having wr's.

Funny thing is more than a few wrs chosen in the 1st 2 rounds of this draft will shine on other teams rubbing it in the face of Ireland and Phibin that regardless of how innovative and dynamic your scheme is...you won't be successful throwing the ball without great weapons.

AGAIN...I ask...

how do YOU judge talent????

what is your standard?????

Tannehill sucks!!

How is he starting?

He is worse then Henne was as a rookie.

He's got BUST written all over him!

At leasr start Moore

GEEZ

When you sign my checks, than maybe you can tell me what to do. Maybe. Until then, just remember nobody died and left you boss.

Besides, selective reading is you my friend....running from what I posted won't boost your argument.

WHY IS THE COACHING STAFF IN LOVE WITH LEGENDU PUNANEE..THE CHARGERS GOT RID OF HIM BECAUSE OF DROPS ..THE PANTHERS TOO..ALSO RICHAD MARSHALL GETS BEAT LIKE A DRUM ON SLANT ROUTES..AND HE CAN'T TACKLE.

How have I ran....

and what does signing your checks have to do with a football blog....

again...I ask....

HOW DO YOU JUDGE TALENT?????

what is your STANDARD??????

The Wr Corp:

The Good: Bess The best hands down.
The Bad: See the good.

TE Corps:

The Bad: Fasano is our best TE
The Good: There is none.

What is my standard LOL.

Compare rosters. Does one team clearly have more skilled players than the other to any reasonable observer?

Now compare the rosters of Minne and Atl to ours. Let me see you come back and say by whatever standard you choose our talent is equal.

Kris, despite what you might like to believe, you are in no position to tell anybody to stop writing. You are in no position to tell anybody what to do. Sorry to break your fantasy.

Guys,

I actually saw improvement in the oline over the first 2 preseason game. It was just harder to tell because with the Falcons they faced the best preseason defense thyve faced yet.

Tannehill IS GONNA GET BETTER ..WHY BECAUSE HE'S SMART.MILLER AND MARTIN AND VERNON WHERE PASSED ON FOR A REASON BUT DUMMY IRELAND STILL DRAFTED THEM ..AND EGNEW WAS DRAFTED TO MAKE UP FOR THE JIMMY GRAHAM MISTAKE..IRELAND MUST GO...BUT HE DID HELP HIS BOYHOOD TEAM THA BEARS WITH A GIFT CALLED ..BRANDON MARSHALL.

I told you the standard I use....

WINS and LOSSES...are you slow????

"on paper" doesn't mean crap to me...how does that name on the paper...translate to WINS on the field....

and when I do the math.....Minnesota as a WHOLE is not much more talented than Miami.....

ORIGINAL CONVERSATION....

You were trying to ride Speilman's jock...and I called you on it.....

I know this is pure hope, and reaching, wishful thinking...but maybe, just maybe our coaches are saving for what we will really do for the regular games, and just maybe that the team will look much better at that time.

I'm not going to bet on it though. I'll just watch.

Naanee...Hartline....Moore....Wallace = Suckie Suckie

Pruitt...Bess...Cunningham..Matthews = Average

Average > Suckie

Fins will average 13pts a game for the season and finish in the basement of the AFC East

Gonna be a long season without answers for Dolphans like myself

FOLD THE TEAM!!!!

THEY"RE NAUSEATING!

Would be nice to get USC wr Robert Woods to team with next year.

The fins don't have the worst WR's group in the NFL.

The Fins will have the Worst Group of Wr's in the NFL if they start 2 white Guys at Wr.

With that being said.

Bess
Hartline
Gates
then Hogan.
Pruitt and Moore might make the Team cause of special teams. But Dashi would rather have Cunningham and MAtthews on the Field.

Kris, despite what you might like to believe, you are in no position to tell anybody to stop writing. You are in no position to tell anybody what to do. Sorry to break your fantasy.

Whatever.....

please try and keep the conversation about the original topic....Speilman and Minnesota's talent....

You really have to be a moron to pay to watch this garbage.

Regardless of whether Ireland can rebuild this team, anyone who knows football can see the Dolphins lack talent and have inconsistent playmakers. If I had to name the top 5 consistent great players on this team they would be:

1. Fields - P
2. Wake - DE
3. Soliai - DT
4. Long - OT
5. Pouncy - C

I'm saying top 5 because I can't think of any others. Now we have guys that can play really well when they want to like:

Bush, Smith, Dansby, Davis, Thomas but game in game out it hasn't happened.

Then you get a bunch of OK talent like Bess, Jones, Burnett, Fasano. And then journeymen and scraps from other teams or crappy draft picks.

The worst part of our talent level is there is no legitimate depth at pretty much any position pushing the starters. No wonder the team looks great in practice they practice against garbage players. Which of our starters from last year is truely in danger of losing there position because the player behind then is talented? Don't say Davis because he's in the dog house because of his maturity, same goes for Jerry.

The talent foundation of this team doesn't get fixes in one draft. The Dolphins haven't been a good judge of the type of players they need in 2 decades. The foundation is rotten. I hope to God that someone at Davie ( I'm crossing my fingers that guy is Philbin ) is saying to whomever will listen that the personnel decisions need to follow a criteria. And the team needs to stick with it. Philbin has revamped the entire identity of the defense and offense and will need players that work in both new systems. This will take time. Now if Ireland sucks at it and he's shown the door, then the next GM needs to keep finding those players that work in those systems because it takes years to develop that depth and foundation. Look at the Steelers, they know exactly what players they want because they have a tried and true long term system. Nobody can believe a defense like that happens over night? They have not had an issue at NT in over 10 years because yet are always looking for a new NT. they know exactly the type of player they need. And they bring the right ones in, and they push the starters.

Maybe we should trash the WCO and run the wildcat again - we have RB's that can make plays. Maybe Tanne can learn to play WR?

Jus Maybe,

No team opens up the entire playbook preseason. Remember, that works both ways, for us as well as the opposition. But hopefully, when we open up the playbook it gets the most of what we presently have. Which I dont see being much more than we've already seen.

At some pint you gotta have "real" talent too.

Kris

You sound like an old lady haggling at the gossip club. How was I riding Speilmans jock by simply saying he has done better at Minne than here? That is riding his jock? For you to come to that conclusion tells me that jocks must be heavily on your mind.

Wins and losses alone don't take into account the division you are in. Besides, my comment had nothing to do with wins and losses, it had to do with a previous GM and previous Coach doing better on their new teams.

That is all. Somehow you found a way to weave jocks into the subject.

You may be on the wrong blog.

I just hope this season doesn't kill Tannehill's confidence. But then again he gets to go home to his wife and has ten million dollars in the bank so he should be ok...

Any decent WRs or TEs going to be cap casualties and could be an upgrade for us?

We can't get any pressure on the QB

Tannehill is WORSE then Henne.

Hell....it's funny and it's true. Who else in the league outside of GB has a significant white wr??? I will wait. When posters are hyping guys like Hogan and Hartline as good wr's its a sad sad day. Stack the box on the Fins and dare them to pass with a rookie qb who has no one on the outside that can win one on one.

Yes, it works both ways. And yes, at some point the rubber meets the road. One thing, with few exceptions, the good teams have is a steady program, not a revolving door of coaching staffs, new schemes and new players.

Ross and Ireland are working for the JESTS!

D Thomas is going to have a really good year. Last nigt I noticed he's definitely paying faster. That doesnt mean he's neccessarily faster, just looking ike a legit nfl rb getting to the hole.

Thats a trait great nfl rb all have had. Lookout for D Thomas this year.

I must say I've really never seen a worse sport franchise.

Henne was able to get 7 wins/ 14 starts/season from this same talent. Tannehill is waaaay better than Henne so we should win the division easily. We never blamed the other players on the team before so why start now?
TANNEHILL IS 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS OFFENSE!!!

Tannehill is pathetic. Sad.

No backs will have a good season on this team running in to a stacked box all year. After watching this passing game...what type of respect to you feel the Phins will get from defenses. NONE!

STR8BALLA,
WES WELKER

It seems like Jerry is coming out of his off season slumber too. Maybe just a few pieces playing just a little bit better will bring the whole team up a notch. I did say maybe.
