Dolphins coach Joe Philbin: It's on the players

The Dolphins returned to an old tradition today, once again gathering in front of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, to signal the unoffical start to regular-season kickoff functions. In previous years Dolphins coaches got in front of luncheon attendees and told them the Dolphins were Super Bowl contenders or playoff contenders or just plain had a chance to be special.

What did Joe Philbin tell the business community today?

In part, he made it clear the success or failure his teams is on players rather than coaches.

"Players are 90 percent of the equation, coaches are 10 percent," Philbin said, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.

It is clear listening to Philbin these past couple of weeks and months, he doesn't think much of schemes or strategies being the difference between champions and chumps. He gives the credit for success on the field to the talent on the field. And, it should be noted, he puts much of the blame for failure on the field to the talent on the field.

This is an interesting view of things only because the reason Philbin is Miami's coach today is because Dolphins ownership and, to a large degree the personnel department, believed the Dolphins were a sufficiently talented team that needed only minor tweaking and improving. Ownership and the personnel department saw this team as one that could take a new step forward if a better coach  milked the grand potential out of the roster.

In other words, the folks that hired Philbin believed a coaching change would drastically improve Miami's results.

Yet Philbin seems to think a coach can only determine 10 percent of a team's fortunes.

Neither view is wrong. But it does give pause that the views are so opposing.

Then, we're fukked!! hahaha

Yup, nothing like coaching Aaron Rogers to make you look like a rockstar. At least the man doesn't believe his own BS.

Third!

Blame Ireland, And Idiot Ross.

If they were smart, they would bring T.O. in for a tryout. This would lift the spirits of all of the players and most of the FAN BASE!!!!!!!! What's happening with Chris Chambers? Chambers and T.O. would be a big help to our receiver core.

bond, you may want to bring Garo Yepremian in to be our kicker and singer of national anthems too.

I agree 90% is on the players. And we have ZERO PLAYMAKERS. Hence we suck again!!

Chamber's still in the NFL?

Under that 90/10 theory, the Dolphins should finish dead last this year because we have almost zero talent....so it may be a pretty credible theory.

What is sad is the twitter fools and the media speak the same nonsense. The news media owners should ask themselves, what they are getting for their money then ?

Watching the Dolphins play is like being pounded in the a** by a Dil-doe that's 10 inches..

Since we have two weeks for Houston I'll say this:

1) I just want to see the PEE-WEE Dance from Odrick. I am not joking, I really, really want to see him get a lot of sacks and do the dance 12 times at least.

2) Bring Jay Fielder, Gadson, Rickey, and Chambers out of retirement. Sign back Ronnie Brown.

3) The best and only good thing Ireland did was draft Tanehill, but if he hadn't Weeden would have got him fired.

4) Wallace can fit under the Cap next year. No way Pittsburgh is able to afford Brown and him. He is done in Pittsburgh after this year. Plus, the poaching Steelers(no pun intended) fans always raid opposing teams stadiums anyway- isn't there some kind of rule that their fans can not buy out the visitor seats during the season?

5) 227 pounds 27 times, 4.4- and even with Hard Knocks at the door, the coaches still can not get C. Hogan on the field. R. Mathews catches a dozen in week two and he gets benched until the rain storm, ya our coaches are less than 10%, more like 1% intelligent.

6) We trade our best CB- for ammunition for who? 1 fast WR is not going to make us a contender, unless it is Jerry Rice or Mark Clayton.

7) Will we ever be able to address our lack of TEs and inability to cover the opposing TE's in this league? You would think after 3 years we would draft some specialists to do that. Dallas Clark was there before we went to TB, we didn't even look at him- Ireland???

8) As long as Ross is in, we won't win. Not a jab at him- just can't run a team.

9) Who knows if Saban had still been around if we would have had Patrick Willis and a bunch of studs on our defense what we could have did.

10) I have officially thrown in the towel. Even if we get a trade for a quality WR, we need too many pieces. Rebuild and accept the fact after Houston beats us 44-7 we are in no man's land. I feel bad Tanehill has to start in such a deplorable organization.

9)
8)

Ever since Jake Long started growing his goldie-locks he's been garbage. Cut your hair you hippie!

Armando, you have zero clue about team leadership. It is one thing what you think, and the other thing what you do. You motivate people by stressing that they are the important elements, not the coach. Aaarrrgh, why I am writing to you anyhow. Stupid me. The only reason is probably that Omar K is even worse. Can we trade another CB against a good writer?

Yep, Philbin Calls it like he see's it.

The Team with the Best Players or Wants it the Most Wins. Simple and True.

His job is to get the Right 53 Players for the Team.

90% ON THE PLAYERS,IF YOU HAVE GOOD PLAYERS ..........

PHILBIN FEELS THE SEASON WILL BE DOWN THE DRAIN .............HE FAILED TO GET GOOD PLAYERS ON THAT TEAM...........

If you were to re-build a team, Would Jeff Ireland be your guy to do it?
Guys who would you want to rebuild the team?

OUR GARAGE MANAGER IS GETTING PAID BIG MONEY FOR BEING A SNAKE ,,,,,,,,,,

of course it is. Put the blame on someone else. This is gonna do wonders for the locker room. great job!

Jeff, do yourself (and your rookie QB a favor) and BRING IN CHRIS COOLEY! He'll teach Clay how to play the tweener role. He'll teach Fasano how to catch. He'll teach Dansby how to speak to the media. He'll be a good locker room guy. He's injury-prone, but came into camp this year in tip-top shape. He got bounced because the 'Skins already have a stud at TE named Fred Davis. I've watched Cooley for a long time. He's not a core player for us, but he's DEFINITELY worth a 1-yr, incentive-laden (Chad Johnson) type deal.

Am I talking to myself. JEFF. IRELAND. DO IT NOW!

The game is obviously played on the field. You can scream, cajole, cry, teach, motivate all you want but if the players can't or won't do the job then a coach isn't going to be the guy to win it.

so if sporano have the pats roster he would have gone to 5 superbowls like belicheat? If you believe that I have a lot I can sell you as well.

MR CORN BEEF IS BLAMING OUR LOUSY PLAYERS FOR THE RECORD ALREADY THIS YEAR.............

OUR AMAZING COAH
AND OUR AMAZING GARAGE MANAGER WANT US TO BELIEVE THEM AND NOT OUR EYES ...........

CORN BEEF,IT'S..........

Harry, that comment was hilarious, but you do not have to read articles if you do not want. I find it funny that I rip Ireland on posts all the time with a clean opinion, but they get censored even. One thing that you did not point out about Armando is that he is a master of the obvious. Of course it is always on the players, the coaches are not playing the game. I would actually say that the coaches account for about 1%, if that. Does not mean he(Armando) is not smart or a good writer, just means, he needs to be more creative and write about topics that are actually more intriguing and interesting according to what is going on with the dolphins.

I have to agree with ALoco on this one Mando (or Joe Philbin). If it's 90% the players, then it's 45% the GM, because he needs to bring in enough talent for them to be successful. And that's not the case. This team is lacking in multiple areas, and putting the losses on guys who are outclassed by other NFL teams is pretty class-less.

I know Philbin is trying to encourage his guys, I don't see them taking this as encouragement.

The combination of Ross, Dee & Ireland are equally as bad as our combination of WR's. We not only have the worst WR core in the history of the NFL; it might be the worst in the history of college football as well.

The over/under for this season is 6....no, not wins....shutout losses

Trade Idea....
Any WR for the entire (albeit depleting) Dolphin fan base. Please put us out of our misery.

It seems Philbin is telling Ireland if the season goes down the crapper he did not bring in the right toilet paper to fix it. I like it blame it on GM. They overestimated the talent on this team.

DC.........THANKS........

IN LIFE THERE ARE MEN WHO TAKE THE GOOD AND THE BAD ...WE DO HAVE A CORN BEEF COACH WHO HAD THE CHANCE TO SIGN GREAT WR'S AND DIDN'T THINKING HE WILL WIN WITH THE CRAP WE HAVE......

NOW HE FIGURED THAT IS NOT THE CASE....SO HE'S BAILING OUT AND BLAMING THE LOUSY PLAYERS AFTER TRADING THE BEST PLAYERS ON THE TEAM/////////

OUR GARAGE MANAGER HAS NO CLUE OR ANY KNOWLEDGE OF FOOTBALL OR DRAFT .........JUST BOILED POTATOES.....

Excuse making sissy pencil necked geek Philbin is dead on balls wrong, of course. Rather, the exact opposite is true, as the Pats and Bellicheat have proven. Football is a chess match between the coaches and the players are fungible.

"Fungible" means interchangeable, for you uneducated ones. (like oranges and dollar bills).

Some of you are really dumb,... TO is done, Plax is done, Dan Marino is done

STOP the insanity. When Philbin fired Ocho he said that the team and Chad were not meshing. What do you think he meant? How about honesty - My team has fallen apart with Garrard & Hartline sidelined. Players are not adjusting quickly to my scheme and I believe we're going to suck. So,... Chad go find a team that does not suck.

It's going to be a long season, but how knows... a brighter future may be on the horizon, just not now.

If its all players and not coaches, why was Matt Cassell a superstar in New England and a Chump in KC. The fanbase is losing faith in Philbin with every passing hour.

I PREDICT THE FIRING OF OUR GARAGE MANAGER IN 4 WEEKS TIME.

Dolphins sign cooley! Oh sorry, they signed coolio to sing the national anthem week 2.

KRIS KNOWS BEST......

HE SAID,WE WILL WIN (( 11 GAMES )) ....

BUT OUR CORN BEEF COACH SAID, (( ALL ON THE PLAYERS )),MEANS............

2 WINS ALL YEAR,......

If success is 90/10 % players/coaches then about 90% of players success comes from the QB. Therefore, using this logic, 81% of a teams success in the NFL is due to the QB. So in essence, get a good QB and most likely it's hard to screw it up.

When are they going to cut Tannypuke!!!!!!!

Aloco, Wha's copking at the Buffet of knowledge lounge?

IF PLILBIN HAS ONLY 10%.........

WHY IN HELL HE GETS PAID 3 MILLION A YEAR ?

WHY IRELAND GETS PAID 2 MILLION A YEAR ?

MAMA MARIA ....

The following things are garbage:

1. Anthony Fasano
2. The overrated, tired, outdated "West Coast Offense" as (incorrectly) run by most coaches--not the real WCO as created by Bill Walsh
3. Philbin and his leadership so far
4. Philbin's theory as stated by Mando.

FOOTBALL IS A CHESS MATCH BETWEEN THE COACHING STAFFS. PERIOD. THE PLAYERS ARE FUNGIBLE.

See, e.g., the Patriots and Bellicheat; Steelers.

Well, I'll modify that. You need a great QB. The running backs and WRs (and linemen) are fungible. Same exact body size, speed, and strength. It's all about what the coaches can get out of them.

Therefore, our organization is gargage for drafting players other than QBs all these years. Like DC has said, we should have drafted a QB every single year in the first round until we found our franchise guy. Only THEN do you get a left guard, etc and half the time that can fall into your lap anyway, because O linemen are hit or miss, as BUST Long is showing us.

Jason Cole once told me personally that I should not discount my theories just because I'm not in the real NFL coaching business. In Jason's words, "They are not rocket scientists." He agreed with my statement to that effect. The reason I'm not a NFL coach is that I'm a lawyer who graduated top 5% and I've had a successful 15-year career as a lawyer. Like some of you, I *am* flat out smarter than Jeff Ireland, Tony Sparano, Philbin, and their ilk.

By spending 5% of my energies on watching NFL football, I can often come up with a better solution than these guys can. That's why they're football coaches, people. They're not rocket scientists.

WHERE DO THEY FIND THESE COACHES.......

FROM IGNORANT STATEMENTS TO BLAMING OUR LOUSY PLAYERS ,BUT HE CASHES HIS PAY CHECK EVERY WEEK WITH GUSTO.........

THERE'S A RIFT BETWEEN THE GARAGE MANAGER AND THE CORN BEEF COACH,,,,,,,,EACH TRYING NOT TO GET FIRED NEXT FEW WEEKS....

Aloco, Who's gonna be the leader of the gang of defeat?
I see your throwing your hat into the ring with your Anti-Dolphin posts.

some fool really mentioned owens and chambers, unreal. how dumb can fans get

I hope Philbin isn't insinuating that any of this is Jeff Ireland's fault. The trade of Vontae Davis is Philbin's fault because it was done at his insistence. Likewise, all of the draft busts were the fault of Bill Parcells. Really, if you analyze it closely, none of it is the fault of Jeff Ireland. I would describe him as a no-fault GM.

and most lawyers cant even build a fence, whats your point

Bill Belly-check was a run of the mill coach until he stumbled across Tom Brady. Now he is the best coach ever. Yeah, I think players have something to do with it.

COALITION..............

NO 1 AND NO 2 GUY IN THE DOLPHINS ,ARE BOTH TRYING TO BLAME THE UNTALENTED PLAYERS WE HAVE .......

WHILE THEY CASH BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM CLOSE TO 6 MILLION A YEAR.........

NO
SHAME
LEFT.

ARMANDO ,IS THE WORST WRITER ...

May the Chris Cooley watch begin...

I'll say this about coaching.

Don Shula had Marty Schottenheimer's number. He beat a superior KC team many times.

But Levy had Shula's number. We would have saved ourselves alot of trouble if we just forfeited the Bills games between '86 & 95.

Coaching is important. Our last good coach was Johnson, and maybe Sabran.

If we would have kept Arnsburger for 1984 we would have won the superbowl.

cooley is a 30 year old has been, has one knee and is done

I'm really pulling for Philbin to succeed, but I admit some of his decisions have been puzzling. Fingers crossed that everything works out.

saban was an awful coach, still is. wanny was last solid coach. he knew how to win with less talent. not easy winning games with jay fiedler

I think coaching beat Ditka in '84.

But I agree that ultimately it comes down to the players. It helps to have a good coach though. Especially for managing the clock, timeouts and adjustments. Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs comes to mind when it comes to adjustments, so does Marv Levy. Coaches are important.

Bill Connors,

"Wanny" was and is a horrible heach cach. He failde in Chicago, failed in Miami and failed in college at Pitt.
To say the he was solid is plain ignorant.

Hello. I am Anthony Fasucko, and I suck. Never forget it.

Respect Jay Fiedler has the Highest Winning Pct% of any QB in Dolphin History. LMAO, Sad thing is it's True

Bill, from last blog. Yes I realize that Wannstache ran Ricky into the ground and forced him to quit the team (big Ricky fan here...idiots who blamed them were among the clueless).

But guess what. I don't care about D Thomas or Bush. They're not my sons. They are NFL RBs.

What we do this year is run the ball 50 times a game with these guys (or screen passes). I don't care if it shortens their careers.

We protect our new QB this year. In 4 years, we'll have new, fresh legged RBs by the time the WRs are there for Tanne.

That's NFL RB position--you only get 4 years unless you are a freak of nature like Emmit Smith.

Anthony Fasano is the only non-QB, non-defensive player to actually be in the record books for INTs!!!

Fasano has actually created 24 INTs in his career by batting perfectly thrown balls up into the air and into the defenders' hands.

Way to go, Fasucko, you tool!!!

Dolphins sign cooley! Oh sorry, they signed coolio to sing the national anthem week 2.
