Players split on Johnson release but Philbin is right

Let's address the drama first: Yes, as I reported on NFL-AM and the Mike and Mike Show on ESPN2 this morning, there is a contingent of Dolphins players that are unhappy Chad Johnson was cut. They believe it unfair and some, specifically Karlos Dansby, have said as much publicly.

But I must also report there are multiple players that are either quite happy or ambivalent about the move. "This is a solid lockerroom we don't need no clowns here," was a text I got from one such player early this morning.

So I wish to convey a fair view of what the lockerroom is feeling. It's not everyone disagreeing with coach Joe Philbin's decision and certainly not everyone signing off on it either.

And having said that, I agree with the group that believes getting rid of Johnson was best. I agree with Joe Philbin's decision. I think it will ultimately be in the best interest of the team. I believe it will limit the amount of unwanted attention that shines on the Dolphins.

Moreover, I believe the Dolphins didn't necessarily lose a dynamic playmaker when they cut Johnson. They cut a guy who was probably going to play OK. But special? A Pro Bowl player? Nope.

Philbin is doing the right thing and for the right reason. Look, Johnson's bizarre behavior weighed against his importance to the team simply didn't balance out. He wasn't a fit. And Philbin said as much.

"It was more a body evidence from June 11th forward," Philbin said. "When he came in June 11th we sat down and we talked and we were very clear, I was very clear as to the expectations of the program. It just didn't work out. It's more about the fit. In my gut I didn't think the fit was going to be beneficial to either party whether it be in the short-term or longterm. That's what it was all about. It wasn't one specific thing. It just wasn't going to work."

This coach, new and untested as he is, deserves the benefit of putting on his roster the players he thinks fit. Remember, it's not always about the best 53 players but the right 53 players that makes winners.

Having said that, this coach is also under the gun now. He and his staff were hired because owner Stephen Ross believed he could do a better job of developing players than, say, Tony Sparano and his staff. This coach is supposed to be able to take young players and get them to play like the young guys played in Green Bay the past few years.

So now he's got to get that done. He has to milk every last ounce of production from Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore and B.J. Cunningham and Rishard Matthews and Julius Pruitt and Jeff Fuller and all the other young receivers.

He was hired to make tough calls. He made a tough call on Johnson. He was hired to develop players. Well ... develop the young receivers.

What have I been saying ALL DAY...

DC???

that was the right move. CJ brought nothing to the table but trouble. We can find other receivers that will drop the 3rd down pass that goes right through their hand.

Good post Mando,

I'm totally on board with Philbin. He was the star of episode #1 of Hard Knocks. He's clearly a smart guy. He's a thinker and not a rah rah Sparano tyoe. I beleive he can take some credit for developing Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings. He was after all the offensive coordinator who although wasn't responsible for calling plays it was made clear he was responsible for working with the offense in practice and installing the weekly gameplan.

All you haters that doubt Philbin and the guys who say Miami is a talent-less team and so forth need to give the guy a chance. He deserves time to turn this around along with Tannehill.

He made the right move.

Nicely said Andy, I'm on board. Not going to be easy or swift but I pledge my allegiance as I have always done to the Miami Dolphins.

I agree mando. He has to set a tone for the team.

Philbin is the right guy and needs time. Trying to imply he has to turn Miami into green bay in year one is a joke.

MiamD20...

I have no problem with cutting Johnson...for me...its the WAY he was cut....its that under-handed...sneaky B.S....its the attitude of management is ALWAYS right crap...its NOT even waiting to get more deatailed and thus accurate reports....its got IRELANDS stench all over it...and if it does...then Philbil will not be much more than Ireland's "B"...and that is not good for the team....

Men will follow a leader...even run thru a brick wall for a true leader...but a puppet can be spotted miles in advance...If Phibin begins to take on the characterostics of a puppet....we are in deep do-do.....

Cut Johnson if you wish...but @ least make it look like it was a fair decision...

Thays all i'm saying...

Andy NJ...and Mark...

being objective is NOT being a HATER...neither is disagreeing with a decision made by the FO....

when did things in this country get so black and white....

why can't you be FOR somethings...while @ the same time be against other things...and still be able to meet in the middle....

Armando says it plain and simple..."the players are split"....

Those were/are my concerns...and that is what I have been voicing since long before he posted this blog headline....

That is the bigger picture...and will be the true test for Philbin as he moves forward...

the bottom line is right or wrong...Phibin/Ireland cut Johnson in a way that seems unfair to some of the players on the team....

would 2 days really have mattered...

2 days...you pretend you investigated...pretend you listened to Johnson side of the story....and THEN decide he wasn't a good fit....

No one can complain....even if they don't like it...the door is closed to all consiricy theories...now the locker room will be buzzing until a pre-season win....

The oya's and the HATERS are glad that Chad got realeased, but its ok becasue he'll get picked up and you all will go back to living you misrable lives. Its always easy to tell when people are upset about there lives and hate it when a brother has it easy..

Burress is still out there if the Dolphins want a veteran receiver. It seems Philbin wants to develope
players which is what he did in Green Bay. Give the guy a chance. Hell nothing else has worked the last 10 years.

I couldnt stand the fact Ocho was a fukkin clown all the time, especially if your not putting up the numbers you did earlier in your career STFU and act like a regular team player jeez.

Im glad he's gone. I never wanted him on the team in the first place. He's more about "ochocinco" than the Dolphins and this is no place for him. And he proved it. GOODBYE.

How hard is this to figure out? shouldn't be too difficult. The fact that CJ is in the news for all the wrong reasons, the fact that Philbin is having to deal with his off-field drama, and the fact that the players are now 'split' on this matter, or any matter, should tell everybody everything they need to know about Chad Johnson's 'contribution' to the team.

We're talking about a player who is more of a distraction than he is worth, and the coach has made a decision to move forward with players that take the game seriously. I'll say it another way...I don't care if it is later proven that he has no fault (which I don't believe), he is not worth the distraction he causes and should not be allowed to undermine the organization.

Players on this team need to get on board.

cj is on crack.

I believe that if Philbin had been a head coach for a few years that he might have reacted differently. With this being his first year then he had to send a statement.

cut dansby and go dig up crowder.
lol

now that* will make a statement.
lol

Kris, The decision was made last night, Many of the comments were made before Philbin addressed his team. We have no clue how slpit they will be after a full team meeting today. I think we need to hold off on thinking there is a mess now. Everyone reacts immediatly. It takes time for people to come to their senses.

Kris, CJ is owed nothing by the team. he hadn't built up any goodwill for this franchise. Fukk him if he didn't fall in line. He's not owed an opportunity to explain himself. He's a professional in his mid 30s - he should know better by now.

Chad Johnson has to get rid of that scumbag wife or else he'll be another Antoine Walker. That woman is nothing but trouble who just wants attention to forward her career in "reality" TV.
Time for CJ to see the reality that that biatch don't luv nothing but herself.
I think he's done, who's gonna give him another chance?

As for the Fins, we better be checking the waiver wire for WRs

I think that Johnson yelling repeatedly that he didn't care about his career.
Had just as large of an impact to the front office as hitting his wife did. Maybe he did
not mean what he said, maybe he was too pissed to care.

Kris,

Honestly I wasn't referring to you specifically and was more on talking about the random names that pop up with the dumb childish post. I have no problem with your view points. It's more toward the stupidness of Philbin is Cameron talk, or our best player is a Long and then a punter and just dumbness. I love debating but not with childish idiots.

And doesnt it seem cutting him is the smartest move ever? He signed a one year deal, with incentives. this type of action if he is guilty WILL get a big suspension from the league, if he is deemed innocent/no contest. He is going to go through a serios divorce situation full of distrations. How productive is it likly he will be.

Just sayin, I think this was the smartest move ever at this point.

I dont care how people slice and dice this decision, Philbin and the organization was right to cut ties with ochostinko...and regardless of what they chose to do in this situation wouldve been scrutinized by some but overall, chad johnson chose to make his life revolve around attention and he chose to marry that crazy woman from the reality show "Basketball wifes"...if you ask me, he knew what he was getting b4 he married her and the problems involved with it...

Im sorry but ive never bought into his redemption mode when he came here and Miami WILL be better without the prelude to johnsons future pains for this organization as a whole...

I still do not doubt that some racial element plays into quite a few of your opinions including you Armando...

It’s more cultural than racial but it all boils down to the same thing. So folks do not understand that others being different is not about being right or wrong but about being different. Those of you who walk around with your pious attitude with a stick up your butts will never get it!

cj = dumb.

Joe made a rash decision IMO and if they start off losing and he lose this locker room then we will have Cam Cameron 2012...

Kris, locker room is split, for all of a day. I bet tomorrow no one's talking about it. Don't see Dansby (or anyone else) ruining their own future for Chad Johnson. I think it's not that serious. But, we'll get to see for ourselves on Hard Knocks next few weeks.

CJ needed to go. Go Dolphins !!!

Ireland wont stand for a black player misbehaving.

It's ime to pull the trigger on a James Jones trade...

SuperPHIN...

I agree...I never thought he was in redemption mode either...still seemed like the same childish person...and marrying that woman was among the dumbest moves he has made by far....to bad he was the last to realize it....

good riddens

Poizen...great comments..and really good points....

The solution to this problem will be week one vs the texans....and chads will be in a courtroom with his laywer right beside his crazy soon to be x-wife...then everybody will forget the day chad was a miami dolphin!!!

Philbin has already lost the lockeroom. Can u say Cam Cameron II?

IT'S A SELFISH WORLD OUT THERE.......WHO CARS ABOUT CHAD JOHNSON,,,,,,,,

NEXT.....GARRED WILL BE GONE IN TWO WEEKS .......

Andy...its all good man...perhaps I took it out of context...

So, in Irelands 5th year the Dolphins are the equivalent of an expansion team.....without the draft choices.

KRIS.... WHEN Take THINGS OUT OF CONTEST ,THEN THE BECOMES MORE FUN TO READ ...............

DC...

I agree...by weeks end...even I won't care about Johnson...however...if/when he resurfaces...and has a 1,000 yards for somebody else...I reserve the right to revisit this topic in DEC...

KT, Ireland is also the one who put up Ricky Williams at his house while he was shopping himself to the Ravens. I don't think that's a fair statement you made. This organization doesn't want ANY drama from ANY of it's players (or anyone else for that matter).

Race has very little to do with this situation. It's about bad timing and the state of the franchise currently. This isn't a franchise looking for distractions. This isn't a fan base willing to let players' silly antics slide. This is a depressing couple of decades to be a Miami Dolphins fan. To hell with anyone (player, Coach, front office) who's part of the problem and not part of the solution.

KRIS...

IRELAND MADE ABOUT 8 MILLION WORKING FOR THE FINS ..........

I THINK HE SAVED ABOUT 4 MILLION SO FAR ......

NOT BAD FOR HAVING GOOD TIME DRINKING COFFE AND PRETENDING HE'S WORKING ....

Its been fascinating watching Ireland work his magic to 6-10 in his 4th year.

Mark...

I got to disagree...this FO owes the PLAYERS and FANS and POTENTIAL FA a measure of proffesionalism....

and NOBODY got that this weekend...we got the same Parcellian, under cover of darkness crap that we have been fed sinc Irland has been the GM...

and I don't like the pattern...and neither will potential FA...or guys with expiring contracts...

Hard Knocks,

Im sure Chad and Lozada get their 5 minutes at least on Hard Knocks. The rest of the episode should give us a small sample of whats to come at the position. I like a good competition. Here's MY preview.

Roberto Wallace - I liked him even last year and felt he didn't get enough chances. He has good size to speed combo. He was my guy who I said would develop this year and then I back pedaled. Then vs the Bucs he shined some and also dropped a tough pass that he should of caught but the conditions were tough in the rain. He earned his shot to work with the 1's.

Julius Pruitt - I usually do my homework before posting but not even sure where he came from. I don't know what type of WR he is as far as speed, possesion but he did produce vs Tampa's back ups he deserves a chance with the 1's at least in multiple receiver sets.

Clyde Gates - He has to get healthy first but the guy has 4.3 speed. I wish he knew how to use it. Maybe Sparano and company were the problem but this is year 2 and I hope he at least finds a way to get on the field and produce with all that speed. But I can't say what he is capable of because I have not seen anything yet.

Brian Hartline - not a true starter but has value as a depth guy. That is all.

Marlon Moore, Jeff Fuller, Cunningham - all long shots IMO

Moving on (Mando, get the hint), I'd like to see Tannehill run with the starters this week. That will be the test we're all waiting for to decide if he should start vs. Texans or not. Matt Moore should want that too. I think this is not a competition for Moore to win, it's a competition for Tannehill to lose. I'm getting the feeling (just a hunch) that Philbin isn't much of a Moore fan. The way he spoke about Tannehill on Hard Knocks. I think he's hitching himself to Tannehill, and he'd like him on the field sooner rather than later.

Very Good Aloco, im sure domestic violence is a way of life for you and your family my friend and im sure most wife beaters will stand with johnson on this case if the facts turn out to be true, but there are those like me who thinks head butting his wife is not the best way to say I love you!!!*lmao*

Pure comic genious.
Aloco, where on earth do you come up with your material?

Caling Aloco dumb would be an insult to dumb people.

I keep saying...

ITS NOT WHAT WAS DONE....ITS HOW IT WAS DONE...

Please stop pounding your chest in a caveman like fashion saying Philbin has nuts...this has nothing to do with nuts..or balls...or cahonahs.....

The rest of the 32 teams watched....and i'm will to bet the majority of players (future FA) frowned @ our conduct...

The irnoic thing was Chad even said on Hard Knocks in the 1 scene walking out the door for their day off that he was going to get arrested. I'm sure he was joking though...karma!

PHILPEN IS TALKING WITH BOTH SIDES OF HIS MOUTH......IF HE BELIEVED CHAD WON'T BE A FIT ,WHY HE SIGNED HIN IN THE FIRST PLACE ......

CORN
BEEF
COACH......

31 teams :\

Philbin is setting the tone and I believe it has gotten the attention of the entire organization including the players that they better tighten it up.

For this I think he will gain more respect.

Ireland has the racist reputation from a number of incidents starting with the Dez Bryant interrogation. Channing Crowder and a few others have all noted that.
