Dolphins trim roster to 78, three more moves coming

The Dolphins cut nine players this morning and placed another on the physically unable to perform list trim the roster to 78. The club needs three more roster moves by 4 p.m. on Monday to get to the 75-man limit.

The moves today:

Cut: TE Les Brown (as ushge), DT Chas Alecxih, CB Marcus Brown, safety Tyrell Johnson (a free agency bust), CB Trent Hughes, LB Josh Linam, RB Jerome Messam, DE Jacquies Smith, and CB Jonathan Wade (who got burned for two TDs Friday night).

The club also placed running back Jonas Gray on the PUP.

During his press conference today, coach Joe Philbin made the point his team needs work. They will practice today, Sunday and Monday before playing Dallas on Wednesday in the preseason-finale. Usually starters don't get very much action in that game.

But the Dolphins need work so Philbin left the door open for playing starters a bit longer than usual.

"I wouldn't rule anything out," he said.

By the way, just as Wade had a terrible game, Richard Marshall was not necessarily good last night. He had a chance to slam the door closed on the starting job at cornerback and he played poorly. He simply watched as Julio Jones caught a 49-yard pass that was more like a punt and his tackling was suspect.

Vontae Davis had a pass interference that nullified his own interception.

So no one is exactly stepping forward. It's wide open between Davis and Marshall.

"We're not ready to name a starter," Philbin said, "but Vontae is certainly in the mix."

I'm thrilled they cut Les Brown. He was getting FAR too much attention on HK. Although I liked his girlfriend, but not even she is likely to stick around if his next job is stocking shelves. That's life.

Lets not go down the road "playing starters"....in a meaningless pre-season games.....thats very Sporano like.....that is also how Long got hurt a few years back....and hasn't been the same since.....

From the last blog.... I don't know how a comparison can be made between Mallett and Tannehill. Neither has experience in a real game. One is playing on one of the most potent, well coached offenses in football, and the other is playing on arguably the least potent, least talented offense in football.

Has Tannehill been cut yet?
Why not?

Armando,

Any chance you can get an update on Hartline? Is he going to miss game 1 or are they keeping him out of preseason just as a precaution?

Tyrell Johnson isnt neccessarily a "fa bust", he was a "you dribble and you shoot".

What he really was is a "Mueller" @Minnesota 2nd rd bust. He was our very former gm Mueller's 2nd rd bust @ Minny. He cost us nothing signing him as a fa and "kicking the tires" since he didnt make the team nor even survived the 1st rd of cuts.

Of the 3 players soon to be cut, look to se at least 1 wr in that mix. Philbin just trying to figure who's the most awful of the awfullings to go first. LOL

I got a feeling we'll find the 2nd best wr on our team from the "waiver wire" final cuts just before the season begins. LOL

Dont we cut Jonathan Wade every year? Why do they keep bringing him back? LOL

The word on the Redskins radio is.....Chris Cooley will be cut when they go to the final 53....maybe Ireland has his eyes on that possibility....

I hope Nanee gets cut. If he makes the team things are even worse than imagined.

I think the skin's run some version of the WC offense....

I felt sorry for Jonathan Wade when he was burned for the nd long td. The qbjust threw a perfectly thrown ball But for some guys if it werent for bad luck, they would have no luck at all.

Sorry Jonathan, time to go. Again.

Hartline, Bess, Wallace, Moore, Gates and maybe either Rishard or Pruitt

2nd td

Velcro cleets Wallace didnt play lastnight. That very interesting considering 3 more players will be cut and he didnt get an audition lastnight.

But Sean Smith was awesome last night. Also thought Vontae played well despite the penalty. Hey mando, how about you actually accentuate the positives? That wasn't a bunch of nobodies they played yesterday. That offense is as loaded as anyone.

Also, dont be surprised if this new coaching staff has seen enough of Fasano. Fasano has peeked, we see the exact same incompetence from him year after year.

If youre going to lose with him, may as well lose without him. He sets a very bad tone for the other recievers. His message is:

"You can drop ball and make the team in Miami. Fasano is a cancer and needs to go. Even if it means worse talent is behind him. We lose with him anyway.

There is nobody to replace Fasano. This Egnew guy looks defeated and he can't block anyway. TE will be a major problem all season. Clay is not a real TE.

Mark In Toronto,

This horrible offense also faced the best defense theyve faced during the preseason. IMO, the offense did have some improvement but it was difficult to tell because they faced the best preseason defensive test yet.

The Falcons do have a playoff calibre defense. No doubt about it.

Clarence,

I realize this. Just really no sense keepng Fasano around to send a "it's ok to drop keep passes" mesage to the remaining wr's/te'. Cutting Fasano sends a message "its not ok to drop catchable passes" in Miami. We will be better off in the "long run" for it.

Until ATL wins a playoff game, they don't have a playoff calibur anything.

Yester...well by that same logic, all the TE's should be cut.

Cutting Fasano would be a "cancer removal" thats been a longtime coming in Miami. We dont need a guy making the team year after year dorpping very catchaable balls. Sends a very bad message to incoming recievers and it like a virus everyone seems to contract.

Clarence,

Cutting Fasano may help the other guys pick up the pace a little. They get to see awful player better than them get cut and mayb desperation and seriousness of the situation kicks in with the young guys.

It would definitely send the message mediocrity wont be tolerated in Miami. Get with the program or get out of Miami.

4-12 or 5-11 this year. Top 5 draft pick. Anyone know who the top WR's are in the next draft?

Fasano is a pretty good blocker. At least he has that. None of the other TE's can even do that. I say they need to pick someone up before they can dump Fas. Starting a TE brand new to the team is only going to set us back. I think they are stuck with him one more season.

Kris,

I can't speak for others on here but I'd have no interest in Chris Cooley. He was a good player at one poin but that was few years ago. I don't rate him as a guy that would make much of a difference at this point. He's been injured and he's slower. IMO, he's not much better than Fasano at this point. I want to see more of what we have in Clay and Egnew rather than bringing vets in. We're not doing anything this year (despite what you think) and I think we have to find out what these guys have before maybe drafting another TE next April.

How is theis "team" gonna win ONE game when they cant even score ONE TD?

Guys I'm not a Fasano fan by any means but he's not getting cut. Just isn't happening....sorry. Never mind this sending a message crap....the guy we have aren't ready to play in the NFL....period. Sending a message to them isn't all of sudden going to make them players. They either have it or they don't and right now they don't have it. Will they over time? Who knows. But Fasano is a good guy for them to learn from and a good guy to keep the pressure of them right now. Again, I'm not a fan, but he's about the best we've got right now, sad as it is.

Well, I guess its time to talk about next years draft. Matt Barkley?

When a thrown ball is not caught the fault belongs 100% on the QB.
These WRs were not recruited from KMart. Prior to coming here they were top WR that ever played football in the county that they hail from.
They never had a problem catching the football before they came here.
You were all so quick to blame the QB before why not now?

Not only that but I think Philbin likes Fasano from the comments I've seen and heard from him. I don't thnk he sees him as a star or anything like that but I do think he sees him as a vet who can help on and off the field. chopping Fasano accomplishes NOTHING at this point and I'm not even a fan of the guy.

Trade the entire team for Matt Ryan. If Atlanta would even do that.

Lets see. Fasano has average hands , can block, just enough athleticism to be somewhat effective in the passing game, and very little speed. And is 250 plus. Why not move him to fullback?

If it weren't for Tannehill we would be a winning team.

Armando, any thoughts on receivers around the league that may be trimmed off their current rosters that the fins may be interested in? Not the best solution, but likely better then the current option.

Armando,

How is Tyrell Johnson a FA bust? REALLY? Wasn't he brought in to COMPETE for a spot? Seems a bit inacurrate to say that, no? If Edwards or Owens doesn't make the Seahawks are they FA busts? Come on! He was brought in for competition. Didn't get it done....no big deal!

Let Tannehill play the first half of this last preseason game, he needs the reps

Trade Brandon Marshall? Brilliant Irescum! LOL

If it weren't for Tannehill we would be a winning team.

Your Matt Moore bromance is showing. Did you watch last nights game or are you making assumptions off of stats?

This is the same s hitty WR corps that Matt Morre went 6-3 with last season with the exception of the guy who was released because he led the league in dropped TD passes every year of his career.

Anyone know the over under on wins for us with Vegas? I'd heard 5.5 before. I think it'll be hard for this team to win 6 games. Anyone else?

Btw, I didn't see the same game most of you saw last night. Defence looked decent. Offence looked slow and out of sync. No way this team wins consistently with that combo. Defence isn't good enough to carry this team and offence is too mediocre.

Did you notice Matt Moore and how he shined against the 2nd team defenses the past two games? Me neither

THE (( POTENT CLAY ))..................

(( 11 WINS ))..................

Who did Tannehill blow to get the starting job? He's just terrible. Another John Beck?

You could have googled it faster than typing it and waiting for a response.

That's right Aloco, there's no potent clay ever in history, Muhammed Ali is the only potent person out there, right? You realize potent means "strong" such as a potent drink. The drink doesn't have to be THE strongest drink, just stronger than your average drink. He'll pan out, you don't seem to want to give em a chance.

Craig, the offense is mediocre?? Are u friggin nuts??

2012.........

DO YOU HAVE A RECIPE FOR CHICKEN SOUP ?

Who did Tannehill blow to get the starting job? He's just terrible. Another John Beck?

Your Matt Moore bromamce is showing. Maybe teams should have tossed aside Peyton Manning and Terry Bradshaw too after 1 training camp...And then again at the end of their first season

I dont think I've ever seen a more pathetic offense then these guys.

Put one whole chicken in a pot of cold water.
Add carrots, celery and onion and bay leaf.
Bring to a boil.
Let simmer 2 hours
Remove chicken
Season soup to taste.

Add cooked rice or cut up chicken meat.

Serve with warm french bread

MiamiD20 ,

Maybe we should've kept Pat White and John Beck according to you.

MIAMI D.... I DISAGREE ...M.ALI WAS THE GREATEST ,HE WAS NOT POTENT ,,,THERE'S A DIFFERNT BETWEEN POTENT AND GREAT ...HE WAS GREAT FOR WHAT HE DID THROUGH HIS LIFE...

YOU CAN CALL FORMAN ,A POTENT MAN ,NOT ALI ...

THE WORD POTENT IS THE MOST POWERFUL WORD TO DESCRIBE HOW SOME IS STRONG ............

SOME ONE IS STRONG.

Some reflections on last nights game at
http://phinsnews.com/another-loss-but-at-least-there-was-progress/

2012............

BIG MISTAKE A LOT OF PEOPLE DO ,IS TO PUT ANY MEAT IN COLD WATER TO COOK....THE WORST THING ,YOU CAN DO IS TO START COOKING MEAT IN COLD WATER,YOU SHOULD WAIT UNTIL THE WATER BOILING ,THEN ADD THE MEAT...

NOTICE HOW THE WATER WILL LOOK WHEN YOU USE COLD WATER WITH CHICKEN,,VERY BAD.

I will place a bowl on the floor.

Please give my warmest regards to Luis. We have showered together in Berlin.

The Dolphins managed only three points in Tannehill's seven possessions.

Aloco

You have never had any training in cooking. To make a stock or a broth, you ALWAYS start with cold water. It helps draw the flavor out of the meat and veges as it heats. Then once boiling you turn down to a low simmer.

That is cooking 101.
