Don't be surprised if Tannehill starts Friday

If the distance between third-string quarterback Ryan Tannehill and and second-stringer Matt Moore was small last week, as coach Joe Philbin said Friday, it seems much smaller today. In fact, it can be argued the two are tied in the battle to become the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback.

And while Tannehill seems to be climbing, Moore seems to be fading.

Both players took first-team snaps in practice today. I was not there. But The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley tracked the practice and reports Tannehill had the better day.

Beyond that, coach Joe Philbin did not rule out starting Tannehill against Carolina Friday night in the second preseason game.

Beyond that, Philbin also made the point he would like to pick a starter for the regular-season opener by the time the Dolphins play their third preseason game.

"Our plan all along was to get all three of those quarterbacks reps with the first group in the preseason," Philbin said referencing Tannehill, Moore and injured David Garrard. "We haven't quite crossed that bridge yet. We'll figure all that out as the week progresses."

Asked if Tannehill would get a chance to start in the preseason, Philbin responded ...

"In one of these games we'll definitely try it, yeah, sure."

Here's the deal: Moore already started a game. If this competition is going to be completely fair, Tannehill needs to show what he can do with Miami's starting group and against a starting defense to give the coaches an apples-to-apples comparison.

So it makes sense for the Dolphins to start Tannehill Friday -- keeping in mind he cannot drop off the table in practice the next four days to earn that distinction. That would be the fair way to draw the comparison. Moore versus starters one week. Tannehill versus starters the next week. Moore coming in as a backup one week after Tannehill came in as a backup.

Philbin does not want to publicly commit to a starter yet because he sees what we see. He sees his rookie advancing and his veterans falling off -- Garrard because of the knee injury and Moore because, well, I don't know why.

The problem is the Dolphins don't have a lot of time to make a decision if they are going to keep to their original plans. The team wanted to know who would be the starting quarterback after Friday's outcome.

"I've stated in the past that in an ideal situation when you have a quarterback competition in training camp, you'd probably like to have your starter named after your second preseason game," Philbin said. "The plan right now would be that our starters would play their most snaps against Atlanta (in the third preseason game). That would lead you to believe if things were right you would have your starter by then."

But if Tannehill and Moore -- oh so close to one another -- cannot separate, then what?

"I'm going to look at film and evaluate the position," the coach said. "I'm going to do the best thing for the football team to win games. I can stand up here and say I do believe that will be the scenario that unfolds, however, it may not. So we're going to have to be flexible and do the best thing for the team and make the decision when the time comes."

One more thing: The depth chart that will come out Monday will not be the final word on which quarterback starts for Miami Friday. It may be a snapshot of the competition on Monday. But Philbin says this is perhaps the preseason's most important practice week. A lot of things can happen. A lot of things can change.

So the first-team QB on Monday might not be the starter Friday. Come to think of it, last week, the first-team quarterback on Monday did not start the game Friday.

You know I'm straight up, man. Sorry for not giving the source before..

No probs Tracy, I just couldn't believe it was done so quickly!

Cheers!

(I'm gonna have a drink ;)

You know what, why can't the Dolphins have a Victor Cruz in the making?

Wallace and Pruitt? Why not!

I have to give Philbin and this coaching staff a chance to teach and prove themselves.

This group of WR's is pathetic.

According to sources:

Bill Bellichick: "I think the decision by the Dolphins to release Chad Johnson was far premature. I was hoping they would keep him until at least after our two divisional games with them this year.

We see the same responses out of Coalition to get Coalition out of here, from Kris, and others and we think they are all the same guy. Don't you?

Who was saying Philbin lost the Locker Room already?
STFU!
JUST STFU ;)
Philbin laid down the LAW!
Don't Fvck wit Coach Philly! He ain't playin MAN!

Ok Monkey Boy! It's past your bed time. Time to go now, ya here?

---------------------------------------------

Dude! This a new low for you. You're pretending I'm you, while you're impostoring me!

You are one sick LITTLE(pun intended)Pee Pee!

These speakers are still too loud. Bose.

Bill Belichick?

YG, give me a break!

Oscar....

F...U....

The technology is here now, for all as-holes, queers and lesbians, we can change you, if you want to.

Now we only have to get rid of Flatline.

Wallace and Pruitt might surprise and Make the Team this Year.

Philbin is showing he only wants Good Soldiers around. Guys that are Coachable. That Care about football. No Trouble Makers. No Marsha, No Chad

I don't like the idea of releasing Johnson....this FO at sometime had to figue he was gonna due something to embarrass the team....it just cam sooner than most thought....

As of right now....we are worse off as a receiving corps..and a team....

Would you want to?

YG,

That was Hilarious!

Dashi,

Agreed, no number 1 pick for Wallace!
-------------------------------------------

BTW - Matt Moore played pretty fvcking good in the Pre Season opener. At least in the first drive(still going over the film). He was Money right up until Johnson dropped the first down on third!

Not taking nothing away from Tannehill, because I think Tannehill outplayed Moore for sure. But, Moore played solid. Enough so that it's still a competition!

Even blacks we can change thru genetic engineering, but it's bettter thru fuc-ing. Yes?

Fuc-ing white girls, I meant. Yes?

Oscar....

You are such a waste of internet space.....the best part of you got left on somebody's sheets.....

Joe Philbin did not have his team ready for the opener. They werent in shape and were totally outclassed by the Bucs. Philbin will be one and done no different then Cam Cameron. Hope we get an experienced successful HC for next year.

Odins,

That's the problem with Matt Moore(even last season) he looks really great on 1 out of every 4 drives. The other 3 drives he's average to mediocre.

Beasely just posted an article, so IT MUST BE legit. CJ cut by the Fins! Interesting that Mando posted that Philbin didn't have the gonads to cut him. What you gonna write about now, Mando? You can't trash the coach for not cutting the guy! Anyone else you don't like on the team?
Well, at least there's a roster spot open for training camp now. And, we're down to 11 Wide Receivers for 5-6 spots...

Luckily for me I'm cafe-au-lait allready.

Oscar if the Speakers are loud lower the Volume. If they're Bose they should be Loud and "Clear". That's what U paid for.

I believe getting rid of Chad was thought out. They waited till after practice and Team Meetings to come to their decision.

Wallace probably made the Decision Easier. He fits the Mold of a WCO Wr better than Most on the Roster. He is big, has good hands, and is an OK route runner. Plus he can break a couple tackles and go up for the ball.

Oscar,

I have no problems with blacks fvcking white girls. Havent you noticed, most white girls now are nothink but skanks antway. LOL

As of right now....we are worse off as a receiving corps..and a team....

Posted by: Kris | August 12, 2012 at 09:16 PM

I would agree with that statement.

Philbin was quoted as saying something along the lines of: Incidents are going to happen with Johnson here. It's just a matter of how we deal with these incidents.

We'll, now we know how Philbin likes to deal with "incidents".

I guess I can't blame Ireland and Philbin for ejecting Johnson. It seems a little harsh to me, but we also don't know all the details. I don't just mean with this incident either.

Johnson got a hair up his butt when Coach told him to watch his mouth. He pouted and wouldn't even talk to the press. Then this just days afterwards? Who knows what might have happened inbetween times.

You are right though Kris. We might be better overall and in the long run. But our receiving corps. just took a hit!

PS: I LOVE Roberto Wallace!!!!

Kris,

It happened sooner, so he is gone sooner. After the warning last week, this decision should come as no surprise.

Aloco maybe in your country it's okay to punch a woman if she touches you but here in America it's kind of frowned upon.

Posted by: Walt | August 12, 2012 at 07:05 PM

It's reported that she head butted him, but it don't matter as he is gone. shame!

No N for me, no W for me. What you think? Isn't that a great advantage(maybe a reason why I'm so far ahead of you People)heheh. What you think?

Tannehill will look horrible against any 1st team D and the novice fans will realize they cant judge a QB on 1 quarter of play.

Only you wrinkled old people care about race or sexual preference or what religion a person is or the language they speak or a thousand other stupid things.

Those of us not ready for the retirement home have moved on from that useless crap.

Odins,
That's the problem with Matt Moore(even last season) he looks really great on 1 out of every 4 drives. The other 3 drives he's average to mediocre.

Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | August 12, 2012 at 09:21 PM

I HATE to agree with you on this one, BUT: YEP!

It's like he's stuck or something. The way he came in last year, the way he finished out! He put himself in the perfect situation to take the next step. BUT: NOPE!

He looks exactly the same. Like you said, up one minute, down the next!

(Freaking aggravating as hell. Thank God Tannehill is jamming!)

Interesting that Mando posted that Philbin didn't have the gonads to cut him. What you gonna write about now, Mando? You can't trash the coach for not cutting the guy! Anyone else you don't like on the team?

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!

ROTFLMAO! You nailed it Tracy! Like I said, you're usually Right On The Money ;)

Hell, I'm not bitter at all.

Coalition and Signal....

Both of you guys are right....the writing WAS on the wall....

"We'll, now we know how Philbin likes to deal with "incidents".....great line coalition....

Also....I don't blame Philbin.....he drew a line in the sand (publicly)...and Johnson crossed it in the most public manner....

To add to that...Johnson interrupting the Coaches meeting was awfully disrespectful.....

Thank you. I found the right volume, for most. But you know how these MP3's tracks behave sometimes when you download them. Right?

Don't believe sh-t from Hard Knocks. First time on Internet.

So, I bet Tampa last week, am betting Carolina this week, and already bet under 7 wins for the season. Betting against the Fins is like taking candy from a baby LMAO! Chad and Garrard gone and Philbin looks weak. BOO YAH!!

Don't be surprised if Tannehill starts Friday?

I'd be shocked if he didn't.

LOL @ Steve....

Now, treat me right, for if I ever decide to leave here, you might lose your monthly check.

The getting rid of cj is good and bad, depending on how you see it.

Hey Coach what will happen if T-$izzle still plays well against another teams 1st string, and Moore is Inconsistent against another teams 2's.

Will we still be hearing from U?

Again, Ota's was the only time T-hill wasn't up to par. Since then he has out preformed Matt Moore everyday.

During the Beginning of training Camp DG was the best on the Team followed by T-Hill. In the Scrimage T-hill was the best one. Same goes for the Preseason game we just played.

Now all u Moore fans have is that he is a "Gamer". Again something U only say if the Guy has no talent. Yet the Gamer did not preform in the 2 game situations. Moore gives a team 1 good season. Last year was his good year for the fins. This year is his bust year. Look at his Carolina Stats. Or even his college Stats.

Now is Tom Brady a Gamer? Peyton Manning? Drew Brees? Aaron Rodgers? Dan Marino? John Elway? Even Gunslinger Himself Brett Favre? Even Tony Blowmo is a good practice player?

All great Qb's work at their craft in practice. If u miss in practice more than likely you will miss during a game.

If a guy Strikesout 8 out of 10 time in Practice are U going to let him bat 3rd, because in a game he might hit a homerun? No right.

Ur not going to let a guy shoot 3's in basketball unless u've seen it done in practice.

Why think Matt Moore can Make Water into Wine during gameday, when Matt can't even baptize in Practice?

-Armando Salguero-

So Philbin and the Dolphins can probably go this route as many organizations and coaches often do to save face(letting it slide).

Or ...

Is the coach going to prove that his words are not just lip service? Is the coach going to actually do what he has said -- which is to weed out the idiots? Is Philbin going to cut Johnson for sullying the name of the Dolphins on multiple occasions in a one-week span?

Such a move would send a strong message. It would tell the rest of the locker room that coach isn't going to put up with this kind of behavior, particularly if you're barely hanging on as it is. It would send the message to fans and media that Philbin can be believed when he says something because put to the test, he did what he said he'd do.

So today could be a telling day.
Joe Philbin and the Dolphins have a choice. They are on trial. Chad Johnson's behavior put them there.

Now we watch for a verdict.
------------------------------------------------

We didn't have to wait LONG Mando!

Philbin made his statement, no?

Me, I see it as a +. Guy 34 y/o, in the eclipse of his career where many of us questioned if his talent was intact, clowning around in Training Camp, and now this. We want no dumb rocks around here, guy is as dumb as a rock. +.

Daryl D.....

My hats off to you.....you were right...and I was wrong regarding our earlier conversation....

But, Philbin said he wanted to talk to cj before reaching any decision about him. Did he?

I understand what u mean Oscar. Some Mp3's are loud some are Low.

There is a setting on most media players that have a Auto-Volume Feature. Levels things out for u. The sound Quality Changes depending on how u burned the Song. Most songs downloaded from torrent sites or P2P have this problem. They use a low bit rate to make the file small but it affects the Sound Quality.

Can you teach fin4 and his bf VIO to admit when they were wrong?

It was simple. CJ was warned, and he crossed the line. That's it. I'm not from the generation of endless make up exams, if you fail, you fail. Period. CJ failed the test. End of story.

Did Philbin talk to cj? We said it before, EVERYBODY is going to be accountable now, for there are no Secrets anymore.

Can you teach fin4 and his bf VIO to admit when they were wrong?

Hey Verdad, have you heard the news?

No not about Johnson, about Dawn? Yeah, rumor has it she's going to be Coaching the Senior Bowl this year so she has a better chance to evaluate our Draft Picks!

Mando Scooped Again: Chad OchoCinco released by Phins at 9:37pm according to Adam Schefter.

Trust me this team will fail miserably!! I promise it will!!! A bunch of incompetent RUNING this orginaztion!! Well I will still love my team !

Hmm...

Did anyone check out the practice report tweets today? It sounds like half the team is injured, in braces or on bikes.

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

TWO PANCAKE Blocks for Hicks during the first drive. One on a pass play and one on a run.

Artis Hicks is MAKING pancakes, John Jerry keeps eating them!

Seriously, Hicks get out on the 2nd level and destroys linebackers. He pancaked a Linebacker and a Defensive Tackle!

Good Work!

Verdad,

Look at your contribution at 10:08 and then look at mine at 10;10!

You can't Fvck with THIS!

L-O-S-E-R ;)

The first team O-line wasn't opening up alot of holes, but they were getting movement. They were winning at the point of attack. They were driving Tampa's line backwards more time than not.

Hopefully they'll get this Zone Scheme quickly and REALLY start to shine.

Verdad,

Look at your contribution at 10:08 and then look at mine at 10;10!
