Eric Steinback retires: The good and bad

For weeks we've discussed how the much-anticipated competition for the starting right guard spot between Artis Hicks and Eric Steinbach never materialized. Steinbach couldn't muster a performance worthy of giving him first-team repetitions and he certainly couldn't be asked to do that at a position the longtime left guard simply has never played.

Well, Steinbach was so unhappy with his body's ability to come back from last year's injury-riddled season that he up and retired today. He told coach Joe Philbin who passed along the message to the media.

Steinbach, as we saw on Hard Knocks, had been mulling retirement for about a week now.

So much for adding him as an acorn.

What does it mean?

It's great news for John Jerry. Out of shape and overweight as he is, he's practically assured a spot on the roster now. Simply, Jerry is the team's third-best guard at the moment and has a chance to crack the starting lineup for the regular-season opener. It makes Nate Garner more valuable, too. And if rookie Chandler Burden shows something in practice and perhaps late in Friday night's game against Atlanta, coaches might continue to consider him for a roster spot.

"We're still evaluating that position," coach Joe Philbin said. "We'll see ... I'm sure we'll be fine."

Part of the evaluation is starting Jerry Friday against the Falcons. Mike Pouncey said today that was the plan. I can confirm to you that's currently the plan.

The Dolphins will keep anywhere between eight and 10 offensive linemen.

Meanwhile, this is not great news for the Miami personnel department. They plucked Steinbach off the scrap heap as a gamble. Everyone gets that. But the perception -- true or not, thanks to Hard Knocks -- is that they signed Steinbach over Braylon Edwards.

In the first Hard Knocks episode we see both Edwards and Steinbach coming in for a workout and the club let Edwards leave town while signing Steinbach. We see the Dolphins basically evaluate two players and pick one who's skills had basically evaporated.

That's not a good look regardless of whether the perception is in fact a reflection of what actually happened.

Look, I get on the personnel department just like anyone else. If you don't believe me, check my column in today's newspaper that complains about Miami's lack of playmakers to help Ryan Tannehill.

But I have to raise the possibility that maybe, just maybe, this decision might not have been made in the context of being able to sign only one of two players and the Dolphins picking Steinbach. If that was the case, it was indeed a swing-and-miss.

But leave open the possibilty that it wasn't. Let's be fair.

We need to get Tannehill some help. Plaxico???

ireland easily worst gm in nfl and players know that

plax should be signed, least hes a big red zone target, nothing to lose on it

I DONT CARE WHO IS ON THIS TEAM AS LONG AS THEY ARENT JETS. iHATED CP10 WHEN HE WAS IN NY AND HERE. FU@$ BRAYLON EDWARDS. HE IS A JET.

Yes. We used to sneak in the OB in the following fashion. We created a diversion near the entrance, then, when the man came out, some of our small ones would go under the turnstiles. Later, they would kind of force a gate that was I believe located at the western end of the Stadium to let us in. After that, it was another adventure.

Watching Plaxico in NY last year and he is done. No speed, can't separate. He had one game with 3 TDs all in the redone because of his height. Could be utilized as a target in RZ but at no other time would he be worth it

I told you in March that we should have gone after RANDY MOSS, who will have a great year.

dont have to sneak in now oscar, they are begging anyone to come. they will start letting homeless people in just to make stadium loook full

Ross gave out 2000 free tickets for Tampa game but only 1000 people were there!

HoHo!, bill connors.

good luck steiny, wish you well. on thoughts of the recieving core, we have a very deep group of good recievers, each with their own identity and reeking of potential. egnew, if this guy bursts on to the seen LOOKOUT!- definately will surprise the nfl and all dolfans, we all know he can catch, hope he gets a lot of balls thrown his way, he is the BEAST miami fans are craving. FULLER, can anyone say manning to regiie wayne??- the only difference is fuller has better size and will get a lot more yak. MATHEWS, will single handedly give miami that tough guy image, looks like a steelers wideout in a dolphins uniform, and looks to be one of the most threatening weopons after the catch, next to egnew. chris hogan is miami's 2nd coming of camarillo, and i think he will as dependable greg was. i like these guys a lot, wouldn't that be an exciting twist to this season, a whole new look to the offense, complete with new recievers and tight-ends. clay and egnew are gonna tear it up, let fuller and mathews replace bess, if hartline is healthy, i guess he becomes the #1 by default, we all know he has speed, but his hands have always been questionable.

egnew, hilarious

WR'S WANTED. MUST HAVE 2 ARMS AND 2 LEGS AND BE WILLING TO PLAY FOR PEANUTS. CONTACT THE MIAMI DOLPHINS.

When Irescum traded 3 picks for D Thomas the draft room broke into hysterical laughter.

I guess thats my Que!

I feel sorta like Bettle Juice if I do say so myself. Kind of look like him too after the day I've had.

Anywhoo, I think everybody is letting one bad pre season game cloud their judgement. The 2nd pre season game is always a cluster fvck of wanna-be's, hopefuls, bubble wrappers, etc, etc. ESPECIALLY when talking about a staff thats simultaneously installing new offenses and defenses.

Naanee is a good example. He's been invisible. But he also hasn't had very many snaps at all. He's a vet, the Coaches feel they know what he brings(no. 2). And they have a logjam of young receivers they need to get a good look at.

Our Defense is another example. We didn't even get on the field @ Carolina. No game planning or sceming and our two best players, arguably three were out. Come on, Misi, Spitler and Guyton were starting. Seriously. I'm not passing judgement under these circumstances.

The secondary was no different. Marshall started along with Sean Smith. But we ALL know Marshall and Davis are our best two corners.

I don't think things are all peachy keen, but neither do I think they're as bad as week 2 made it look. We have a staff struggling to right the ship. Last weeks "Tryouts" weren't the best indicators.

I'm looking forward to the dress rehersal coming up. That's when we'll get our first real peek at what this years starting units will look like.

Go Team!!!!

-Odin- ;)

the trade wasnt bad, everyone thought it was great.....and then they announced thomas instead of mallet and every team started laughing knowing thomas would of been available in the third rd without trading that pick

Odin, shut up you blabbermouth. Spare the blog your rambling, endless drivel.

Thank you.

How bout you quit checking out under aged packages and finally clear parole?

odindouche 2 words. SEEK HELP

I guess I was right about you missing the finer points of the game being locked on to the tight pants and bulges, eh?

I'm starting to suspect you don't even care for the game of football?

They mentioned Uniform changes. This dweeb was hoping for a Locker Room scene on Hard Knocks.

Maybe Braylon's mother was a prostitute. Could be why they signed Steinbeck over Edwards.

Is Tanny's momma a hooka?

edwards will be cut by seattle so go ahead and bring him in if u want him

Win now build later.

Miami is building and building and building and building and building and building and building.

Can we try winning now, first?

Ireland is a joke. The guy is in over his head as a GM. He probably has a script up in his office that he goes by to sign players. The guy is lost. Making crap up as he goes along.

Odin, shut up you blabbermouth. Spare the blog your rambling, endless drivel.
Thank you.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to interupt all the great dialogue that you put out there:

It's True
My younger son, besides having a long pre-adolescent dic-, has an IQ of 130(tested when he was hyperactive and having had to be redirected to his task). So, who knows with these young Stallions? An American-Cuban Stallion.
Posted by: oscar canosa | August 21, 2012 at 07:42 PM

I'm sure you rather discuss underaged "Stallions", eh?

Seems silly to keep building a house made of straw.

Note to Ireland:

Try wood or brick next time.

yeah ireland didnt even show up to meeting bush asked for with him and philbin

did he misspell steinbacks name on purpose?

guys, check the history, austin almost got 1,000 yards returning kicks his rookie year. He was one of the promising young talents that year. He was a 3rd/4th receiver next few years, but in his first start he broke all types of Cowboys records.

Everyone knows what Cruz did. He INSTANTLY lit it up in a Pre-season game his rookie year. Then he got hurt. Then 2011 (speaks for itself).

You can't name me ONE young WR on our roster right now who had that much promise. Not Wallace. Not Gates. Moore had one little flash in that Raiders game a few years back, but that's it. I'll give you they weren't in a great system with terrible coaches. But my point still stands. It's pretty unlikely at this point that we have a gem in our receiver core this year. Sure, there's a slight chance, but it's VERY slight.

I'm still trying to figure out if the people on this blog know anything at all!!!

Eric Steinbach was brought in to see if he had anything left to compete for a backup job, add competition and leadership. Philbin new and coached him before!!

It cost us nothing!!!! Get it nothing!!!!

Braylon Edwards!! Enough of this guy. He plays for the Jets, they don't want him back. He plays for the 49ers, they don't want him back!!

Do see a pattern!!!

I can't believe some of these idiotic thoughts on this blog!!

gates is long gone, he will be cut, good riddens

yeah screw edwards, guy killed us as a jet

odinbreath

you say you know football and talk up nanee? i guess you don't know that he was the last ranked wr in the nfl last year. last. that is how much you know. squat.

Braylon Edwards is far better then anything on our roster.

no way. bess def better than edwards

Bess? lol

yeah screw edwards, guy killed us as a jet
Posted by: bill connors | August 22, 2012 at 06:22 PM

He killed Sean Smith, thats NOT saying much.......

edwards? lol

Didn't talk up Naanee in the least.

Get the little boy packages off your mind and check my post.

It was in response to a fellow poster(not a bone puffer like you)asking why Naanee has been invisable.

Labor Day will be here soon. It will be a good day to blog because VIO will be out on meth while hunting with the kids that day.

What the hell kind of name is Verdad anyway?

Is that some kind of "code" for PedoDad?

At least I won't seeing how well they "Measure Up(Ahem)".

Just don't forget to notify the court of any address changes Pedo!

Does a day go by...I ask you...Does a single day go by that odins doesn't mention gay or meth topics?

Well, no, never. Every single day for 3 years now odins has not been able to go 24 hours without mention gay or meth related topics.

If you are a Dolphin fan - READ THIS ARTICLE!! Not sure if it means anything but...

A Dolphin Tale

If management can stay out of its own way, Miami has a shot at making some noise this season.

By Bill Barnwell

How about NE dropping a guy with big money!!

Everyone makes mistakes.

Ryan Mallet sure looked good the other night!!

I can't wait for Tanny to shut everyone once and for all.

Other than PriceMaster SMF Sparrow, only odin is stuck on the gay theme. consistently and persistently.

I take it in stride and at 5:51 make a lengthy post about FOOTBALL. I don't mention you or your Bone Puffing sickness in the least.

Yet, right on Que at 5;54, you just can't keep your Meth Money Make shut.

I could care less that you think talking about little boys privates are acceptable and prefered(I hope you go BACK to prison-BTW).

But I ask again, are you having fun dragging down and ruining the blog for everyone?

(Worthless Bone Puffer)

Now, now, I'm finishing something productive, my dinner. Don't provoke me.

Really Ireland is a joke? Never heard that one before. Do you retards realize you sit in here every day of the year and complain about the same exact stuff? Go back 20 blogs, they all look the same. Same complaints, same stupid points, same stupid comparisons. Yet you keep going on and on and on and on and on and on,,,,,and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

Now, now, I'm finishing something productive, my dinner. Don't provoke me.

What are you having........virgin tube steak?

Is there a day that goes by that some psycho doesn't stalk this odins guy on thei page? Ive been reading for a week now and every time this guy writes something his stalker pops right upo and responds. Which makes you wonder, how many hours does this moron spend glued to his computer waiting for Odins? You always say bad things about him but you are the one that looks like a dik. It's so sad to think of you anxiously waiting for the odin guy. If he doesn't show up it must ruin your day.

DC, their quarterbacks are studs, our quarterback isn't a stud. If we had Tony Romo or Eli Manning throwing to our receivers I'm sure one of them would turn into a pro bowl player. Everyone says they have such potential, that potential doesn't just lay dormant.
