Hard Knocks episode 3 review right here

A pretty uninspiring, unremarkable and somewhat uneventful Hard Knocks tonight, folks.

Last week was stunning and brilliant for capturing the Chad Johnson meeting with Joe Philbin, for the insight of the David Garrard injury, for the drama of Mike Sherman practically going postal on underperforming players in that now memorable team meeting.

This week? Eh.

Joe Philbin opens the show channeling his inner public relations maven. He tells the players in a meeting that they don't have to agree with decisions he or his coaches or general manager Jeff Ireland make. But by all means don't actually complain about those decisions publicly.

"You're not going to agree with every decision that Jeff (Ireland) makes or the input I have in it, but ultimately, you have to be supportive," he says.

We find out this week that Reggie Bush is a hard worker and works hard after practice. We find out that rookie RT Jonathan Martin had a tough game against Carolina. We find out that John Jerry has been overweight since the first day of training camp and has struggled in practice.

"A player descending fast and I was a fan of his in minicamp," Sherman says.

"You watch the tape on Jerry, he's a catastrophe on tape today," adds offensive line coach JimTurner.

The truth is Jerry played relatively well against Carolina. He was probably the best lineman in his group. We got about 40 seconds of that upside part of the story.

It is interesting that left guard Eric Steinbach, who missed all of last season with a back injury, visits with Philbin and the player admits "the product I thought I had and you were bringing me in for is not exactly showing out there."

Steinbach says he doesn't want to bring up the word "retire," but in so doing, of course, he's bringing it up. Look, Eric Steinbach is going to be hard-pressed to make the club. He's struggling. He's great to have in the locker room. He's experienced. But can he get his body to do what it once did?

Not so far.

By the way, I love Sherman. He's the only coach that apparently recognizes the obvious struggles of the wide receiver corps. He talks about someone stepping forward. He talks about someone making plays against Carolina to unbunch what is obviously a struggling group.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is similarly honest as he's calling the game from the Carolina pressbox. As the Panthers are shredding his unit, he pounds the desk in front of him and yells, "What the hell are we doing?"

Later he says, "We're going to find out about these guys tonight because the way this group is playing, there's going to be spots to be won."

The episode wastes our time trying to convince us that the Plantation hotel where the team is staying during camp is somewhere near Miami Beach. In truth, it's about 40 miles away. We seeJake Long at home eating a meal with his wife. We see tight end Les Brown, who will be cut in the coming weeks, and his girlfriend at an airboat ride facility somewhere in the Everglades.

We see quarterback coach Zac Taylor on Sunday tell Matt Moore that Ryan Tannehill has won the starting quarterback job. We see Tannehll in the same meeting have pretty much the same reaction in learning hes got the job as Moore had in learning he doesn't have the job.

When Philbin meets with Moore the coach says he can't "put my finger" on the reason Tannehill is the pick. Moore, showing tons of grace, says, "I gotcha."

bill, I'm not much of a gambler. Is betting against the Dolphins what's known as A SURE THING?

pro bowls, hilarious. nobody cares about pro bowls.

Week 05--@Cincinnati Bengals Win(Sun Life Stadium)

Week 06--St. Louis Rams Win(Sun Life Stadium)

Week 07-- Bye

Guys, by at least beating the Raiders, Jets, Cardinals, and Rams. It's very realistic we can be 4-3 by the bye. Those sayin 3-13, we can no fewer than 3 wins when the bye rolls around.

Week 08--@New York Jets Win(Sun Life Stadium)

Week 09--@Indianapolis Colts Luck vs T-hill Too close to call!

Week 10--Tennessee Titans Win(Sun Life Stadium)
Week 11 @Buffalo Bills Win(Sun Life Stadium)

Week 14--@San Francisco 49ers Loss

Week 15--Jacksonville Jaguars Win(Sun Life Stadium)

Week 16--Buffalo Bills Win(Sun Life Stadium)

Week 17--@ New England Patriots Loss

This is a sweet schedule. I see no fewer than 6 wins and upto 9 wins realistically. There are quite a few teams on our schedule pretty much in the same boat as us talent wise and slightly worse.

Based on this schedule Im listing my over-under at 7-9 for the 2012 season.

dc no way. underdogs cover like crazy , vegas hypes the line of favorites cause 90 percent of the public bet the favorite. i layed some money down on texans at -6 back in july for week one vs us. its now at -9 which i wouldnt touch

Everyone on our team is great

And everyone else stinks

GET IT?

Nobody cares about the ProBowl Game. But The All-Stars are the All-Stars. They Care about the All-Pro's

If u don't care about the future why bring up the 2-5th rd picks for D.Thomas, Over and Over and Over and Over Again?

Ireland has done the Smart thing by not trading Away Multiple 1st rd Picks for 1 player. We didn't have any players on this team 5 years ago.

Luck vs Tannehill week 9. WOW!!!! LOL

yg no chance this team wins 7 games, none

dashi guess u didnt get it, course i care about the future. im saying what future do we have with this roster. we need first pick so we can deal it for a ton

True Bill, you may win with your preseason bet, but it's so up in the air that you might as well throw a dart and choose whichever side it lands on. At least in the regular season you have a more strategic way to gamble

i've got u'r hard knockers right here.lol.

YG,

I guess you have Miami finding a few WRs who can get open vs the Jets? Miami also must be winning those games 10-3 because this offense wont score much because there's not enough talent to put up points but judging from the preseason the D is atrocious. I don't see Miami beating anyone until the start to play better on D.

true to a point miamid, im not saying i bet much on preseason but u can always find a underdog with 2 to 3 legit qbs on roster so in the second half they get all the garbage points back. always bet the dog and ur win cash. 10-6 again last week.

these r nicer.

( . )Y( . )

Before bye week we have the Raiders(seem to have thier number now), Jets(In great disarray), Titans(They aint so good either), and Rams( see Titans).

Those look like 4 very realistic wins coming into bye week. That's a 4-2 record, 5-1 if week can upset the Bengals. I dont see beating the Texans under any circumstance, but if it happens, Look out 6-0 at bye week! LOL

AndyNJ,

The Jets offense is worse than ours. If Tannehill leads one td drive that game we win 7-3 over the almighty fistpumper. LOL

Oscar thanks for explaining to us how U feel about the Jets @12:08

U do realize ur in a Dolphin Blog?

Gaye NewYorker. U guys love to argue so much ya go on other teams blog to talk Football.

Go on any JEt Blog? I bet it's empty, All the Jets fans are out talking crap about other teams. Cause there is nothing good with their team.

O-Line? Worst
Qb? Ha
Rb's? The last one was better than this 1
Wr's? Really

On the Jets Defense?

They only have 3 players. 2 Cb's and Bart Scott the other 8 Starters just Suck.

yg we wont be favored in any of those games

jets and fins are so bad. those 2 games will be awful to watch. i want to win 3 games this year, both vs jets and shove a win so far up jeff fishers ass

bill Connors,

Thats great we wont be favored in any of those games. Its just a great opportunity to bet the spread and win big time! LOL

im sure bell will haunt us and pick thill off a couple times

u may win yg but the fins wont

YG,

I don't share your optimism. Miami is not hands down better then any of the teams going into the bye. Sure some teams have issues but no team in the NFL lacks more weapons on O then Miami.

Week 06 @ home against the Rams should be a soldout SunLife stadium game simply because Fisher spurned us for the Rams alone. Bet your money on that. SunLife stadium will be a packed house sellout for this one. LOL

YG, looking at the schedule, it all seems so easy, doesn't it? Of course, that's without remembering we'll have a rookie QB, behind an "under construction" line, passing to a bunch of 3,4, 5 WRs, having to catch up because our defense couldn't stop an ant from scoring. If we win more than 4 games, I'm doing something nice for myself.

AndyNJ,

Neither are ant of those teams hands down better than the Dolphins either. I like our chances against those team with Tannehill at qb. Sure Tannehill has the physical attributes. But we have yet to see him exit the intangibles about him that can seal the deal of him becoming a great qb.

I bel;ieve we see Tannehill get better and better as the season moves on.

YG.
WoW man I would like to have your enthusiasm. This year is going to be a tough year, I'll give you my thoughts even though I'm a stupid Dumba s s just like JI is. I don't know crap about football game planing or installs or nothing I just been watch football for 40 years now. Look Tanny is going to make a lot of mistakes that may cause us games, it's a new offense scheme, new defense scheme. New philosophy, that this team needs to buy into. It will a big time development year at the WR position, and at the Left side of the line. And IMO I think Philbin should experiment with players who has it or not. What i am trying to say is use the second third string players to see who can play in this league its like a evaluation proccess except is live action against #1's a 3-13 or 4-12. Season it will benefit to us in the draft, and possible JI gets fire.

True Colors bell will haunt us with a couple picks

Bell Hasn't had a Couple Int's the last Couple years combined.

Now that he's a jet and 35, Bell will become a BallHawk?

Again, Today we don't get the Gaye side of U today. I guess ur Bi-Polarness is a Day to Day thing. Certain Days I use these Aliases, Next Day I'm going to Use these other Aliases.

But we still get that Classic Hate u love to Spew. Nothing Constructive.

DC,

Unlike Sparano, Philbin's sticking with a group to build chemistry and continuity. Better to let them get the hiccups out thier system now, than 4-5 games into the season(Sparano).

I also believe Ryan Tannehill is good enough right now to beat bad teams. If not, then we know there's great chance he isnt a true franchise qb. Like Bill Parcells said, "If they dont bite as pups, they wont bite".

Look, I dont expect Tannehill to beat the upper echelon teams right now. But if he cant beat them awfullings right now, then maybe he's and awfulling too.

TY Hilton should had been a Dolphin.

DC,

I watched Luck in preseason, he's good enough to beat bad teams now. He's a rookie too. If so called franchise qb's cant beat bad teams right away. Its a pretty good indicator theyre not really franchise qb's.

If they dont bite as pups, they wont bite. Dan Marino began beating bad teams as soon as he was inserted into the starting lineup.

?

Easy there YG, Luck is a freak of nature. I'm not saying RT can't beat bad teams, I'm saying RT can't score over 40 points every game. Looking at our defense, that's what he'd need to do in order to win. Luck has a much better defense this year than we do. You'll see.

I think Luck and Tannehill will be the two best rookie qb's in the league this year. Right now, Tannehill seems to look slightly more comfortable in the pocket than RG3. RG3 seems to be holing onto the ball a little to long on numerous occassions.

It maybe due to Tanehill already fully knows his offense and has to think a little les than RG3. Luck's just looking like a pure phenom at the position.

This blog's censoring my posts. LOL

DC,

Anyway, the defense doesnt come out drunken in false confidence as they did in the past. Looking like crap in the preseason for change may become the best thing to ever happen to this "self-overrated" defense.

We havent had a qb that can confidently operate the 2 minute offense since Marino. I believe we have found that again in Tannehill. He looks pretty natural operating the 2 minute offense. Almost as natural as that guy named Marino. LOL

Just woke up after that compelling Knocks episode. Everything seems about the same as two weeks ago

My over-under is Tannehill throws for 21 td's even with this shabby wr corps.

YG,

I was just thinking what a realistic Tannehill stat line should be. If he plays all 16 I would go

3300 passing yards
18 TDs
16 ints

The only way Sun Lifeless will be sold out is if Ross allows every ticketholder to give Ireland a golden shower.

This show has been REALLY boring. Our HC is boring & the players HBO is focusing on are boring. I've seen nothing on Lamar Miller or Daniel Thomas. Nothing on Legadu or Bess. They've shown nothing on Wake, Starks, Soliai, & our Safeties. I think Les Brown's girlfriend is hot but come on...He has NO CHANCE of making this team. Period.

BTW--This kid Egnew seems like a complete f#cking retard. Based on the last two episodes I have NO IDEA why this kid should make the team. I honestly don't care how high he was drafted. He looks totally lost & I'd rather keep a player who has a chance of helping this team.

I will say that this team would be stupid to keep Garrard at this point. He's always been injury prone & Moore is more than capable of playing if Tannehill really struggles.

The one thing I've learned from 'Hard Knocks' is that Matt Moore is a class act.

We have RBs,

I hear you but Hard Knocks has always been this way. I remember the year the Ravens did it they kept featuring this DB who had no shot. The year KC did it they featured Boomer Grigsby who didn't make their roster and bounced around the league and even was on Miami I think for a few games. Dallas had Danny Amendola who ended up being a legit slot and then the Jets with Danny Woodhead. So it's hit or miss with the undrafted guys.

I didn't see last nights episode but will later tonight. Did they feature the WRs or was it about as much a feature as the O-line got the previous week?

It was stupid of Ireland to sign Garrard. And Chad Johnson.

YG,

If I were a gambling man I'd say 6-10.

Come on Andy give him at least 20 TD.

Who honestly gets excited about hard knocks except the people who want drama in their lives....Half of them may not even be around this year and this is what the nfl is all about regardless of wheather its shooting in miamis locker room or wee yorks...I want to see THIS team play football and show signs of an above average group competing on the field rather than how they spend their time and money....cuz frankly most of us dont care!!!

no way this team wins 6

I have to agree with We Have RBs, Egnew seems like he has some sort of autism issue, Ireland couldnt spot this during an interview with him, did he even intervview before he drafted him?

AndyNJ,

You're right. Probably b/c it's my team & I'd rather hear more about what's going on with our starters.

Last night featured the QB's, John Jerry, Jonathan Martin, Eric Steinbach who seems like he might be done, Egnew who is horrible, & Vontae showing improvement in practice. Nothing on the Safeties or D-line or LB's or RB's outside of Reggie.

yg,

Why are you posting away games at sun life stadium???, and theres no way in hell we are going undefeated at home this year with this group..sorry man, like optimism but just not realistic given our circumstances, we still need to become more consistant in the running game, o-line and have some resemblace of a average recieving group!!!

Oh, and lets not forget we still have to play Defense in these games too..lmao!!!

If Tannehill doesnt improve dramatically he's going to put a lot of pressure on the D when he piles up the three and outs. Carolina was up 17-0 just 7 minutes into the game.

I have to agree with We Have RBs, Egnew seems like he has some sort of autism issue, Ireland couldnt spot this during an interview with him, did he even intervview before he drafted him?

Clue,

All I know is that most of the draft analysts were shaking their head when Egnew was taking in the 3rd. Olivier might be a little raw but everyone knows he has talent.

If you look at our drafts since Ireland came to Miami I've got to believe he's missed on more players than any GM in the NFL.

Thats not hard to believe when Ireland sits in the room with coaches and says les brown is a talent you cant find anywhere else on the street. That should be all the red flag you need to know this guy is not an evaluater of good personal.
