Philbin, Dolphins make the right call on Tannehill

Ryan Tannehill is the Dolphins starting quarterback for the regular-season opener on Sept. 9, coach Joe Philbin announced this afternoon.

And after the coach talked about it being a "close" call and saying it was made based on tape study and gut and discussions among, coaches Philbin did not take a bow.

But he should have.

The Dolphins coach made a hard decision. Made a timely decision. And, most importantly, made the right decision.

In choosing Tannehill over Moore, Philbin picked the quarterback of the future to take over now. So that's good. The future -- meaning whatever Tannehill will ultimately become as a player -- will get here sooner, we all expect. Furthermore, Philbin made the right call for now in that he picked the better player now.

That's right, if you've been following along on this blog or on my twitter handle or on TV, you've heard me make the point that Tannehill has outplayed Moore since he arrived for training camp.

I recognize this decision is not a slam dunk. Tannehill, as rookies often do, might struggle and the cynics will make it seem as if it was wrong to pick the rookie. But that would be the short-sighted view.

Understand that this season is not about Tannehill taking the Dolphins to the playoffs. This season is aobut making Tannehill better, giving him the experience to ultimately succeed in the future.

Peyton Manning didn't light it up as a rookie. Neither did Steve Young or Brett Favre. But they laid a foundation for what they ultimately became in their rookie years. If the Dolphins had waited until next year with Tannehill, we'd be a year behind where we're likely to find ourselves by the end of this year.

So get on with it, I say.

And a warning: When Tannehill struggles and he will, manage your expectations. Manage your commentary. He's a rookie. He started 19 games in college. He's got a lot to learn, even by his own admission.

So understand the circumstances. This is not Tannehill's make or break year. This is, however, his foundation laying year.

Phins78,

I wasn't aware that you were so dead set against starting Tannehill.

The only thing I can think to say in rebuttal is this:

1. What are the alternatives.

and....

2. He is playing better than all the other QB's we have available. I mean, by definition, Rookie or not, he's EARNED It.

It's the GM and the Coaches job to surround him with talent and put him in the best possible situation to succeed. For whatever reasons they've came up short. Should we let this fact interfere with Tannehill's development?

Indy put Manning out there in a similar situation as have many others with their own rookie starters.

I say the TIME IS NOW and being the 8th overall pick of the draft, I've said it from the "Git Go".

-Odin- ;)

zero(ahem)

This is the right decision even though what Moore did last season was great. Certain things are obvious; the strong arm and athleticism etc....The only problem who is Tannehill going to throw the ball to. Clay looks good but everyone else is average. Next draft the Dolphins will have to go for receivers in the first two rounds. They should make a play for Mike Wallace from the Steelers but they will not because Ireland can not make a bold move.

Ms. Ross hasn't been selling any tickets. This is pure business.
Tannehill has nobody to throw to. Nobody. An o line that can't block for the pass or the run.
Little Jeffy is feeling the heat and forced Philbin to make this call.
Tannehill will be on IR by the second game.
Hopefully, little Jeffy will be run out of football all together. He just plain sucks.

Yeah, I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with the fact that Tannehill has outplayed all the QB's on the roster.

At least all the ones young enough and healthy enough to ACTUALLY PLAY.

-Odin- ;)

It's like I said before Ross and JI. Mae this call because of the pick at #8. And they hope to sell more tickets! But don't get me wrong the kid has talent but he is a little green still especially with no help!

Labor Day coming up. That means for one of our bloggers:

Can you spell: "REBUILD"!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Ireland cant, he had better learn fast, I mean Like really fast.

He just a spent an 8th overall pick on a qb that is now surrounded by 4th rd or later recieving talent. Not gonna work longterm. Better work on bringing real talent into that lackadaisical secondary too.

It's a passing league now. So you had better be able to score in bunches and not give up points in overly abundant bunches.

And he came in out of shape last year? WTF?! What professional athlete shows up to camp out of shape. Just pathetic, glad our young guys are learning from him, he seems to be rubbing off great on Vontae heh?

ROTFLMAO! Sad but True! As soon as I'm done laughing, I'm going to cry.

Dansby's showing one thing: He Just Don't Get It!

In regards to backing up Coach, your exactly right. Good Point.

There's only one thing IMO that can "Save" Dansby and that's having a Monster Year!

It was the nail in the coffin. Fins won 14 to 0. I think it was the AFC Championship game, I belive the fins went on to ;lose against the Redskins.

FP4FGs. | August 20, 2012 at 07:12 PM

I was there as well and remember how Miami Police made the City look BAD by sicking the canine unit German shepards on the fans who poured on the field after the win back in an era were every city with an NFL team let that pretty much slide.

Odin,

Ross isnt going to sell tickets if fans find these recievers can consistently separate and are dropping catches either. Even if Peyton Manning had been our qb.

Great story in 'The Onion' today titled: "Insane Moron Draws Conclusions From Meaningless Preseason Game."

Highly recommended reading for about 50% of the posters here.

When fins beat the Jets 14-0 in the Afc championship game. That was the same year they were trucked over by John Riggins for the Redskins winning td score.

YG, The Defense is the white Elephent in the room IMHO
I hope there ready for game 1, I cant take another 0 and 7 start.

LOL

Once again I wake up from a nap and I see my name all over the place someone impersonating me. As I don't know who it is as happens on Internet with the nicknames, I hold you responsible for this, Armando.

No Offence There Oscar.

FP4FG's,

I have so little faith in our d because we have only one proven impact player in the secondary(Vontae) and he only has an impact 3-4 games a season. The rest of our defensive secondary, when theyre not operating out of solitary confinement, theyre in hiatus to the witness protection program.

Bad for us because its now a high flying passing league. Everyone will have decent stats against the run because not many teams feature the run anymore.

YG, OUCH.
Dont mince words, What are your real feelings?
LOL :)

Sorry Odin if I find Alocos post funny, He does post funny stuff and I will reply to them, I was just pointing out that there's a group that seems to follow you.
Thats all
No conspiracy here
Move along now.

FP4G's,

I remember clearly, it was 82-83 season we lost to the Redskins. Easy one to remember because the following because after losing the sb we drafted Dan Marino(1983).

Marino took over for Woodley late that 1983-84 season and the rest was Marino history.

These guys must be ONE mind....

Ryan Mallett-head will be starting for the Patriots tonight...
for all you loonies that still think we should have drafted that guy.
Now's your chance to see if he is as good as you think.

Tannehill has good form and a good body but the team that scores the most points wins.

I'm made a THOUSAND TIMES OVER

MY Favorite Position is Center

In any Sport

I'd take Mallet over Tannehill 8 days a week.

FP4FGs. | August 20, 2012 at 07:51 PM

Not completely the way it was. That year Marino 1st saw the field in week 3 if my memory serves in relief late Monday night Vs. the L.A. Raiders (eventual S.B. Champs) for an ineffective Woodley were he threw his 1st T.D. Pass in the right post to Joe Rose.

The week after a Shula with much less patience for his 2 1/2 year starter pulled the plug in N.O. in the 2nd Qrt. 1st T.D. pass to Duper of many to come and the week after is the game you mention Vs. the Bills a 38-35 loss were Uwe Von Shamenn derailed Marino's 1st start with a 38 yard miss.

DAMN! I'm a foutain of useless Football info!

Your thoughts on the white Elephent in the room AKA the Defense?

Posted by: FP4FGs. | August 20, 2012 at 07:44 PM

The defense is giving me fits. I thought this rag tag crew would transition over to the 4-3 nicely and be even better. What di I know?

They were good statistically last yaer. Trouble getting off the field on 3rd down and not enough turnovers. I was expecting the 4-3 transition to be somewhat of a cure all.

As far as what to do?

1. Somebody needs to realize that Marshall(as I predicted-lol. A little Mando style back pat)and Davis are our best two corners.

2. We need to use the nickle more, disquise our intent and let Wake free lance more in those situations(There could be a reason we've not seen this yet-Pre Season).

3. We have to get Misi out of there. I don't care if we have to get Burnett over there and Guyton on the weakside or vice versa. Either way, Misi has to go.

4. Clemons has to go. He takes plays off and apparently doesn't understand what the word Pursuit Means! This stuff might have slid under SpOrano, but I can't see it flying with Philbin.

If we had a little better depth, I would cut Clemons Right Now!

5. We need to get Derrick Shelby all the QUALITY work we possibly can. The undrafted Rookie is almost as Good as Odrick right now. He's CLEARLY ahead of Vernon and has better size and pass rushing skills. And he's considered Raw by most! This guy can be really good if given the proper opportunities. I mean designated pass rusher good in my opinion. He could be breathing down Wakes neck if developed properly.

I know, I go on like a Wind Bag! You asked!

-Odin- ;)

I will be happy if our O line keeps him from getting him killed

Oscar, you're not going to believe this. You have company. SMF/Pricemaster was posting this over and over again for the past two days.

I don't get it, I like Tannehill........**SO FAR**............

(I think.......I hope........NO! I KNOW! I think......)

"Philbin, Dolphins make the right call on Tannehill"
==================================================

I think the headline should read like this.

Ross, Ireland make the right call on Tannehill. Memo sent to Philbin.

Mando please Respond

Nobody likes me here, except my other Selves

Why did Matt Moore not become the Starter?

I still don't Understand

Moore is the Greatest

He is by far our best LB...and probably the BEST Defensive player on our team....

Posted by: Kris | August 20, 2012 at 07:54 PM

He's also aging fast, WAY over-priced and simply not living up to his billing.

He is our best Linebacker, possibly our best Defensive Player, but thats not always enough.

I'm not ready to run him out of town just yet. But there are two things he definitely needs to do right now.

1. Shut his trap in regards to Coach Philbin's decisions.

2. Simply PLAY like a 50 million dollar linebacker.

If he can't handle that, lets restructure accordingly or get our "Re-Build On".

-Odin- ;)
