Philbin, Dolphins make the right call on Tannehill

Ryan Tannehill is the Dolphins starting quarterback for the regular-season opener on Sept. 9, coach Joe Philbin announced this afternoon.

And after the coach talked about it being a "close" call and saying it was made based on tape study and gut and discussions among, coaches Philbin did not take a bow.

But he should have.

The Dolphins coach made a hard decision. Made a timely decision. And, most importantly, made the right decision.

In choosing Tannehill over Moore, Philbin picked the quarterback of the future to take over now. So that's good. The future -- meaning whatever Tannehill will ultimately become as a player -- will get here sooner, we all expect. Furthermore, Philbin made the right call for now in that he picked the better player now.

That's right, if you've been following along on this blog or on my twitter handle or on TV, you've heard me make the point that Tannehill has outplayed Moore since he arrived for training camp.

I recognize this decision is not a slam dunk. Tannehill, as rookies often do, might struggle and the cynics will make it seem as if it was wrong to pick the rookie. But that would be the short-sighted view.

Understand that this season is not about Tannehill taking the Dolphins to the playoffs. This season is aobut making Tannehill better, giving him the experience to ultimately succeed in the future.

Peyton Manning didn't light it up as a rookie. Neither did Steve Young or Brett Favre. But they laid a foundation for what they ultimately became in their rookie years. If the Dolphins had waited until next year with Tannehill, we'd be a year behind where we're likely to find ourselves by the end of this year.

So get on with it, I say.

And a warning: When Tannehill struggles and he will, manage your expectations. Manage your commentary. He's a rookie. He started 19 games in college. He's got a lot to learn, even by his own admission.

So understand the circumstances. This is not Tannehill's make or break year. This is, however, his foundation laying year.

WHY DOES IT TAKE 15 YEARS TO FIND A QB?
IT TOOK ONLY 6 YEARS TO GO TO MOON

BUILT ROME IN 12 DAYS

BUILT PYRAMIDS TOOK 14 YEARS

BUILT EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IN 4 MONTHS

COLUMBUS FOUND AMERICA IN 5 WEEKS

BUILT HOOVER DAM TOOK 2 YEARS

GRAND CANYON TOOK 5 YEARS TO BUILD

IAM NOT A GYNOCOLOGIST BUT YOUD THING BUILDING GRAND CANYON WOULD TAKE LONGER THENN FINDING QB.

Worthy of ANOTHER COPY/PASTE.
ALoco, though thou are perhaps from another planet, perhaps even another galaxy, you are a he!!uva funny guy and a darn fine chef.

Joke franchise

Betcha by golly wow.
No o-line.
No WRs.

Alright, U Clowns Let Dashi Shower U with Some Knowledge.

The Argument of Moore over anybody was good Until they had to put it on "Tape".

Moore has been exposed as a fraud. Not alot of Potential(How good can someone Become), Matt has Suspect Athleticism at best, Mediocre Accuracy, Horrendous Decision Making, Inconspicuous Hands(Meaning he can't eat A Whooper, Matt's more of whooper jr. kind of guy), and He only throws to 1 Wr 60% of the time)

Chad didn't Fit in the Plans. Enough Said!!

The same things Joe Philbin Has been Repeating over and Over again. (Well he hasn't been that Graphic about his description of Moore, Philbin just said he watched the Tape)

I'm not saying Joe is Honest Abe, but U can believe that what he is telling u is the truth. No need to lie

Unlike all the Secretive Head Coaches we've had here recently. All the Way Back To Wannstedt, JJ was the last coach to call it like he see's it Down here.

------------------------------------------------------

The Fix was in from the Beginning

U could see it all line up as Soon as they Signed Philbin and he Hired Sherman.

I wasn't saying it here, but Dashi was saying it elsewhere. The Fins were going to Draft T-Hill all along.

Even if they Signed Peyton they were still going to draft T-Hill as a Qb.

Why else get rid of MArsha While still trying to sign Peyton?

Remember Clowns it Would've been more Likely Peyton and Reggie Wayne, Plus Keeping Marsha along for like 2-3 years.

MAtt Flynn. That was the Easiest one, Sherman just showed philbin the Tape on T-Hill(Told him don't worry I already told Wifey to break his foot, he should be available at 8). They brought Flynn in put him thru the paces, then Alex Smith and David Garrard and did the Same thing with them(Notice how Smith and Garrard almost have the same skillset). They probably even put M&M thru the Paces to see how the Gamer looks like in person.

Like they did the Headcase(Braylon Edwards) in hard Knocks.

They Came to a Decision that Garrard is about the same as the other 2. And Spent the Minimum 1 yr deal on Him.

Because they knew all along the fix was in.

The Whole Wifey Breaking his Foot. Trust Me the Chick looks Crazy. But she probably swallows so who can blame T-$izzle.

If T-hill didn't have the alleged broken Foot he would've went higher. The Guy only really had 1 pro day and did No Personal Workouts.

He ran a 4.6 on a Bad Foot. He knows the WCO which is basically the "Standard" Nowadays. Makes all the Throws and he can do it on the run too. That Easy TD Tebow underthrew the other day. T-Hill makes that.

T-Hill is a Fluid Athlete At the Qb position. Who was getting Coached in the Ways of an NFL Qb since his Freshmen Year at T-A&M.

The Fix was in All Along

-------------------------------------------------------

I understand if T-Hill came from some spread Offense then into the NFL.

But the Guy that has been his Coach for the Last 4 years is here with the team. And if anybody Thinks or Knows if T-hill is ready it's Mike Sherman.

The Same Guy who Was Cutting a 3rd pick on TV. U don't think Sherman Holds T-Hill to A Higher Standard?

T-Hill is basically his Son. He wouldn't even think of putting him in Unless he was sure the Kid was better than the Competition and was Ready to play in the NFL. Just to make sure the other players or the Media think the Fix was in from the Beginning.

Everyone remembers that part in Hard Knock when Philbin Looks at Sherman and tells him with a The Joy of a Little Kid, Did U see the Throw Ryan just made.

Sherman looks at him all Nonchalantly, Yeah and (Like he has seen it a 1000 times)

Philbin told him a couple times again and Mike was like OK. Yea, thats my boy. I mean yea, that was a nice Pass.

Never caught them having the same Conversation about Morre? Why was that?

------------------------------------------------------

Also, I know even u Moore Fans couldn't like when they told him he was starting and he was like, Oh, So Now I have to Pay Attention?

Really Matt? Why so shocked? U should be prepared at all times. No Professionalism

Jeff,

I agree on the Matt Moore tip. I think he would be the better back up out of he and Garrard.

I’m getting the impression that Tannehill is going to take over and run with it. I think he’s going to come out of Pre Season as the starter and run with it.

Tommorrow night I think will be the determining factor. He’s taken one step after the other, steadily improving. If he takes another step Friday and looks good, I think that will be enough to cinch the deal
————————————————————–

For all the Hours, days and Months of Pro/con-ing the heck out of whether Tannehill starts from day 1, it all came down to one simple factor.

All the Raw Rookie Talk aside, all the Garrard vs. Moore talk aside, it all came down to who has played the best since Camp began. That’s the way it SHOULD be in my opinion. Regardless of all the variables and all the details.

Tannehill has outplayed the incumbent.

I STILL stand by my initial assessment. The one Craig M took exception with. Tannehill IS “Extremely Raw”. And as Jeff points out, as raw as he looks, he’s handling the role of being an NFL QB.

He’s doing it Raw Guys! I can’t wait to see him develop and get that badly needed experience behind him. I knew he had some upside and potential when I studied him Pre-Draft.

But I’ll be Damned NOW, if it doesn’t look like the Sky Is The Limit with this kid.

Luck looked very good and RG III not bad. But I now have NO QUARRELS in questioning whether or not these guys will be the two best QB’s to come out of this draft.

Tannehill got the NOD and I believe it’s the Right Call All The Way!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight MIAI!!!!

..Odin..you are right..I was off base there..Misi was a DE at Utah..

On paper, and from the first 2 games this preseason we appear to be short in the "playmaker" department. Lets see if Tannehill is able to conect with these young guys and turn one of these dudes into a premier playmaker..It may take awhile, but at least now that the team has decided to go forward the process can begin..Good quarterbacks turn odinary recievers into very good ones. Lets see if there is one or 2 guys where there is a level of comfort or understanding of the offense. Like I said, it may not happen right away.

What is a realistic expectation of this offense? I still think that we will run it more then a lot of people think..Could be wrong. Maybe it will be more wide open then I think..(by wide open I mean lots of time where the opposition is in nickel and dime)..Personally I think this will take time to evolve to this level..But again could be dead wrong.

T-Hill to Bess. As long as he can keep that in mind, The Fins should be able to move the ball.

Now, We Released Chad. Is Naanee the Next one to go?

What about our Secret Weapon Flatline? When is he going to show up? If he Shows up?

Remember I've said all along we are only keeping 1 of the 3 ^Above^ . From the looks of it, it might be the 1st one Dashi thought will be Cut. The Secret Weapon

I would Keep Stone Hands(Wallace) over Naanee. On Potential and that Naanee hasn't shown me anything Yet.

Definitely, Hulk Hogan over Flatline

and then a battle royal for the last spot between the Rookies, Pruitt, and Marlon Moore.

Gates is Definitely on the Outside looking in. That is/was 1 player I was Optimistic to at least make the team this year, because he was a draft pick last year and his Speed. I guess Dashi can't always be right.

I also believe Thigpen will make the Team Before Steve Slaton.

If Thigpen Makes the Team We are more than likely only going to carry 5 wr's.

We are probably going to carry 4 te's and 4 rb's. I don't see us carrying a FB, Even though that kid J.Lane did look like a Battering Ram. And he knows the System.

What a joke.

Apparently they wouldn't let my "Self Help" post go through for Monkey Boy.

I would've kept my mouth shut but he was impostoring me AGAIN tonight. I f you're so vigilant in watching my posts to him, why can't you catch the posts where he's OBVIOUSLY impotoring you Dousche Bag?

All I was telling him was, if he wants to learn football, he has to keep the Man Twinkies out of his mouth.

He has to quit injecting Meth in veins and Mando juice in his mouth.

Most of all, he needs to quit watching Pouncey when he bends over and watch Tannehill when he makes his throw.

I was just trying to help by warning him about the brain damage all the corks in the head can cause.

Sheesh, I get censored for trying to help one sick STD infested scum sucking Meth Wh ore.......aka: Mando's Trained Monkey Boy.

And how was YOUR day?

On the Real Expectations for this Offense?

Sherman has a history of calling it 50/50. Even when he was in the NFL with Green Bay. Last Year at A&M. Was exactly 50/50 maybe 1 more pass than run.

But I expect a 60/40 ratio leaning on the Pass. We will pass alot, but nothing like the Eagles or the Patriots or the Packers. 70/30 Teams.

We will be More like 600 Pass Attempts to Every 400 Rush Attempts. With a High Pace Offense? We might be looking at 700/450 or a little Moore of Both.

U have to like that the Fins can go Shotgun No-backs 1 play then 15 seconds later they are in the I-Formation with Fasano as a FB. All this with the same personnel on the Field and the Defense can't Substitute fast enough. Them 2-3 Minute 10-15 Play drives will be interesting to watch. I know some are hoping for 3 & Out like the Jets. But This Offense Will be way more exciting once it's clicking.

This Offense should be fun to watch grow this season.

Darryl,

No worries. I've been all over this Misi thing. I hate to say it to, because I liked the guy and his potential in the 3-4.

I saw this coming with the switch to the 4-3. I knew if he couldn't transition back to DE he would be in trouble. Sure enough, especially now with the two games recorded. Freeman, Newton and even Orlovsky were going right after Misi on pass downs.

It's too bad to, Misi will probably be a good player on a 3-4 team. It ain't going to happen for him here in Miami.

I still think him and Clemons days are numbered here. Clemons has regressed terribly or I just never noticed he was never very good to begin with.
-----------------------------------------------

Lets see if Tannehill is able to conect with these young guys and turn one of these dudes into a premier playmaker..It may take awhile, but at least now that the team has decided to go forward the process can begin..Good quarterbacks turn odinary recievers into very good ones.

Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | August 21, 2012 at 12:54 AM

I think the Young Guy is going to be Old "Ankle Weights" Wallace myself.

He's obviously taken some strides forward. He has even made the 1st team starters.

I think the Coaching staff has made a concerted effort to motivate Wallace into taking some big steps forwards. First they came out and mentioned his talents and skills in regards to OTA's and the start of training camp. Then they slid him down to 4th string on the depth charts. Come on? 4th string? If that wasn't psychological warfare I don't know what is.

Then they make public jokes on national TV about him and the "Ankle Weights"? Yet he then gets promoted to first string?

Come on..........he's obviously one of the Coaching staffs favorites and their trying EVERYTHING in their power to motivate him.
------------------------------------------------

I think him and Tannehill start connecting on a bunch of high percentage plays(Intentionally called by Sherman). Tannehill's accuracy helps him to finally learn about using his size and perfecting his possesion type skills.

Then from there, with his speed, the sky becomes the limit.

I think the guy you're thinking about in your scenario turns out to be Wallace. I think he's one of the Coaches favs and I think their working overtime in trying to fit him into being one of Tannehill's favorite outside guys.

I think it can happen to. I think Wallace has the skills and Tannehill will help him develop his self confidence. Watch over the next two weeks and see if were not force fed(by Sherman)the Tannehill to Wallace show!

-Odin- ;)

NICE POST DASHI!
-----------------------------------------------

Everyone remembers that part in Hard Knock when Philbin Looks at Sherman and tells him with a The Joy of a Little Kid, Did U see the Throw Ryan just made.
Sherman looks at him all Nonchalantly, Yeah and (Like he has seen it a 1000 times)

-------------------------------------------------

I noticed a few scenes like that and thats definitely the vibe I got from it too ;)

Don't know how much it means, but interesting stuff for sure. Nice post.

The fins have a secret plan - first send Tony to the Jets he will screw up that offence a good one.- Second send Jeff to the Pats that will start a slow slide to the bottom. If we can beat Buffalo then we are in the playoff's.I hope RT doesn't get hurt the way the OL is playing this could put him out for the year and then we get Matt again. Hope for the best but plan for a high draft pick.

What is a realistic expectation of this offense? I still think that we will run it more then a lot of people think..

-Darryl, so do I. Philbin basically even stated that he thinks the run game will be OK and that, thats why we've been working on the passing game so much during the pre season.

Either way, one thing I've noticed, with this offense we SHOULD very shortly at least have the capacity to run with the high, quick scoring offenses we find around the league in this day and age.

We are already Light Years ahead of the old SpOrano/Parcells ground and pound philosophy. That used to be so frustrating. If we went down two scores you could almost feel it was over.

Soon, VERY SOON, that will all be a thing of the past. This is an up tempo, fast paced offense, that when it comes together, will be able to strike quickly.

I like what I'm seeing. No more taking a knee with a buck fifty on the clock till half time.
----------------------------------------------

Could be wrong. Maybe it will be more wide open then I think..(by wide open I mean lots of time where the opposition is in nickel and dime)

-Right or wrong Darryl, I think the important thing is that this tean, with this offense will EVENTUALLY have the CAPACITY to Open it Up when need be.

Compared to Henning and Dabolls offenses, you could just tell it wasn't going to happen. NOT ANYMORE - LOL!
-----------------------------------------------------

..Personally I think this will take time to evolve to this level..But again could be dead wrong.

Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | August 21, 2012 at 12:54 AM

-Well, that makes two of us then. I definitely think it's going to take time. But just judging from the brief glimpse I've gotten from Two Pre Season games, I see the potential. I see where Sherman is trying to instill this wide open-quick scoring type of offense.

I'm SURE it's going to take some time. It's just a question of how much. I LIKE IT.........I'm SOLD..........I'm ALL In on Homer Wagon!

QUICK! Somebody get me a GIANT Glass of Kool-Aid ;)

Same to U Odin.

If Monkey would talk Football and Not just go on Pointless Rants. Maybe we can have some serious discussions Here about the Franchise and where this is going.

Til Mañana My Friend

I, for one, am glad that Sparano is gone! He would not have started Tannehill. He would still be trying to prove to everyone what a genius he thinks he is and would refuse to be swayed by the fans, his coaching staff, the media, or his own eyes! Notice what the Jet's Offence has been like this Pre-season. I expect that Rex will be looking for a new OC soon.

Philbin had to start RT17! Everyone could see that he was playing better than Moore and Garrard was injured. Besides, if the team sucks this year, he can chalk it up as growing pains with a rookie QB. That should get him a pass this year at least from Ross and the fans.

Now, if only he can find an excuse for the Defense...

Good Night Dashi!

I don't know where you came from, but you're right about the Troll.

You're also a pretty interesting character to kick ideas around with. Both on and off the field stuff. Good Money!

Dashi Knows Him Some Football!

(I'm trying that 3rd person stuff.......But I dunno?)

Good Night!

-Odin- ;)

So?

Armando, you are so pretentious. How on earth do you know it is the right decision to start Tannehill. Pretentiousness is a sign of immaturity and you are no spring chicken.

Your bouffon(s) seems to know more Football than you do, Armando.

I expect that Rex will be looking for a new OC soon.

Posted by: Tracy474 | August 21, 2012 at 02:38 AM

Tracy, like I said before, I think you're "Straight Up" and usually "On The Money".

I agree with the sentiment, but I have to take exception with this statement.

When you make a MISTAKE as Big as Tony SpOrano(and it was Rex Ryan's call), you'll be looking for more than a "New OC". You'll be looking for a JOB-LOL!

Rex's abrasive style does what abrasive things do. It grinds on people. When things go well it's a Non-issue. When things start to unravel, it gets old with a quickness.

As things went from bad to worse, Rexy pulled off two of the biggest blunders EVER!

He brought in one of the worst Coaches to have ever walked the sidelines in SpOrano and arguably one of the worst quarterbacks to have ever started an NFL game.

If you thought it was BAD when the Twin Towers imploded........stick around.........you ain't seen NOTHING yet!

Yeah, odin, Sparano is on our side. Definitely.

You are a lover of conspiracies, odin, try this one for size. Everybody can see that the Jets Team is going down the drain. And the Owner and their organization can't see it? BS. That is by design.

Odin was just being helpful and lets be honest, this scum sucking, STD infected Rat Bas-Turd needs HELP!

The League(Football) is all powerful, and besides trying to mantain parity among Organizations, sometimes they punish Teams for different reasons and in different ways. Unbelievable, uh?

The most common way the League accomplishes its aims is $ changing hands. There must be other ways, as this classic of a big Operation, but I don't know about them.

The League works in a bit different way from a Famiglia. Not that they have much more scruples than Mafiosi(extortion, blackmail), but they are legit in this Society where bribery is somewhat accepted.

Well THANK YOU Mr. Not Odin...........

May I call you Not Odin?

We think alot alike you and I, Mr. Not Odin.

Do you get the feeling that YOU can tell what I'm thinking and I can tell what YOU"RE thinking?

Yeah.......Me Too. It's almost Spooky.

-Odin- ;)

We can expand on this Theme. When I was in my fight against Fidel Castro I had to be very careful in what I wrote. A wrong word written by me in a Blog could provoke a reaction on the part of a blogger or on the government's part that could bring immediate retribution of the harshest kind to that blogger(it happened one time).

At the same time, the Castros Operation is mono-served and much easier to understand and penetrate than Operations that are many-served.

No spookiness at all, odin. I can tell what you are thinking.

Although I am certain I'm not the only one with that capacity, odin.

We can tell your whole being, odin.

He's so stoopid. If he would just come clean and post with us under one name.....

And so why don't you do the same?

All you jerks who think with a 2-14 record we are going to draft Barkley are crazy. Barkley WILL NOT be drafted by Miami next year. T Hill is the guy for the next 10 years.

This whole thing was done wrong. We should have drafted Blackmon at Wr. Given Moore enough weapons to utilize Reggie Bushes skills. And we should have found a TE in free agency.

Moore played his butt off and did a darn good job after getting thrown to the wolves.

I am rooting for Tanhill and hope he takes us to the promise land.

As a Dolphin Fan Moore deserves to be treated better and I think when all is said and done we are going to be counting on him to bail us out again. This team is showing nothing, zipo, and in my opinion are lost at sea under this new coach.

Philbin had better figure out how to lead real quick. The Johnson thing seems to have lost him the locker room. Hopefully he can regain it before the season begins. Sparano wasn't shula but the guys played for him.

Lets see what happens throwing another young QB to the wolves might work. Still wish Pennington could have stayed healthy best time watching the Dolphins over the last 17 years.

Go Dolphins!! And Moore gets a that a boy from this Dolphin Fan. Should have showed more in camp, probably was obvious from the start.

You guys are thinking to small on this first pick thing. Maybe the NFL will put some presure on Ross to get the front office in order.

Still think Ross is a Jet fan. He tryed to buy them once and comes from New York. Enough said.

Go Dolphins!! Come on guys get the field play togther.

Philbin makes the right call right on time.

T not only beat out the more experienced QB, but showed the fight that's needed to win. I like this kid. He took to heart his own mistakes, made corrections, and fought on. He didn't give up on himself when he was rated third string. I expect he will show the same tenacity and drive when the score is down.

Philbin doesn't show the hesitation of a rookie coach. He is methodical. Well calculated. Unemotional. But tempers decisions with his gut and instincts for the game.

He is not able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but does speak in complete sentences.

He reminds me of Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys way back when. He just needs a nifty looking hat and suite to wear.

Well I hope the new coach wouldn't cave to this owner but this BBB coach has just show use how little he knows. This Kid needs to sit for a year and let Matt run this team, Thank You for another losing season maybe we can look for a new coach next year after we have a losing season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark, why would we want RGIII? Tannehill is way better.
