Post-mortem after 2nd loss in 2nd preseason game

Worried about the Dolphins?

Well, it is not exactly time to push panic buttons. But it is time to identify where such buttons are located because another month of this stuff is going to be bad.

"We know we're better than what we've showed," Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore said after last night's 23-17 loss to Carolina, a game which wasn't as close as the score because the Panthers totally outplayed the Dolphins early when the starters were in the game.

"Yeah, we should be a little concerned."

This was a game that was supposed to give clarity to the Dolphins quarterback competition. It didn't. Coach Joe Philbin was asked if he'll be able to go through with his plan of naming a starter for next week and he seemed at a loss for an answer.

"I don't know that to be honest with you," he said. "I really don't."

Nobody was happy with their work. Ryan Tannehill wasn't.

"Obviously, it didn't go the way I wanted it to go but I was excited to ge out there, compete with the guys and I think it's a starting point," he said.

This also is true: As I wrote in my column Tannehill didn't get much help from anyone. Moore, meanwhile, failed to step up when he had the chance.

"We got a lot of work to do," Moore said. "You have to credit Carolina, they came out and played well. But we have a lot of stuff to work on."

The Dolphins ran the ball 12 times for 37 yards Friday night. Yet Philbin wasn't all that concerned about it. He said it has not been a point of emphasis. That's good. But maybe the Dolphins should start emphasizing it a bit.

Because the regular season is coming.

Check out Tannehill below in part of his post-game talk:

I know People, Kris. That's my craft.

JI is extremely well respected around the league. I know many of you will refuse to believe that, but it is true.

Many of you were unfortunately schooled in the USA so your understanding of mathematics is non-existent to the point it never enters your rational thinking. I'll help you out. 79% of the current GM's have not won a championship in the last 10 years. So if you are calling for Jeff to be fired, by the same standard you are saying approximately 25 other teams should be firing their GM as well.

I love me some jeffy!

One of the properties of Internet is that you can know People thru it, also.

4 more years! 4 more years!

He's so stoopid. If he would just come clean and post with us under one name.....

And so why don't you do the same?

I am a loser who is on here every minute of the day... Who am I?

Someone needs to smack Ireland on his big melon and remind him that he is the GM. Therefore, the 4s, 5s, and 6s at WR are his f*cking fault. Apparently he is ALMOST admitting he failed. Where was MIA when the FA WR free-for-all was taking place? We missed out because Ireland had his back turned looking for acorns. Another season over before it begins!

That is the number of consecutive days odin has mentioned the words METH and Gay here on the blog.

Ha!, not as much as other People here that I Know.

It is Evident that Kris is exceptionally Stupid. It has been for Some time now.

Are you getting all this down, Paul?

I just did a wet #2 in my depends

Alright, Paul.

This is my life, This is my Blog.

kris predicted a 11-5 season, lol we couldnt do that in the sec

Paul, Get it Down.

defensive issues all revolve around the pass rush....improve it and everything else is easier--if the front 4 can't generate consistent pressure, they'll have no choice but to blitz frequently.....not ideal but thats the way its gonna go--they might be planning to blitz more already and just haven't shown that much during these first 2 games.

dashi, stop being a homer. For god sakes, it's pathetic!

Ireland's doing an OK job? How many teams are REGRESSING like the phins have to this point?

Main article on the herlad even says it. The phins are not progressing. So it doesn't mesh with your assessment.

Either Ireland has acquired a bunch of lousy players or Philbin & his staff can't coach. We should see improvement from 1 game to the next, not get worse!

I'm sure it will pain you to admit 1 or the other but, that's the reality. Time to accept it & stop posting paragraph after paragraph trying to defend Ireland or this pathetic excuse for a team that he's assembled.

Now, Paul, let's go after all those URL's. No rough stuff. Just warn them.

Bill is, Slow. right Paul?

lousey performance, enough said. 2/14

How's Debo, odin?

Paul,. Did you get them? I need to know Who is In my bloG.

this and that,

The only GM most of us are concerned with is the one currently continuing to fail THIS football team. And if it concerned THIS football team, we'd probably have opinions about those other loser GMs as well.

Ireland is an IDIOT, even if you only look at the WR debacle. He got rid of BM and then sat back and did nothing to replace him until all suitable replacements had signed with new teams. All other details/problems aside, our WR corps was better with him than without him. Today, that hole is still glaringly there. That's a major f*ck up when the kid you drafted in the first round to lead this team needs all the help he can get.

tough to hang too much on Philbin at this point, or even assess him much.....dude and his staff have been here for like 7 hours, barely knows where the bathroom is, inherited a mediocre roster with a crapshoot at the most important position--say what you want about Ireland but don't start crappin' on Philbin already--no coach wins without talent--simple.

2-14 would be best thing for us this year, get that number one pick and deal it

Ireland is too busy looking for hooka moms to find any talent. Some think he's secretly working for the Jests. The Jests fans all praise him.

You Guys., it's been 3 days and I'm still Here. Can I get a bathroom Break?

We better get Barkley if we have the #1 pick.

Ireland traded Marshall and got Eggnew? WTF??

BPA, this is FAR from a mediocre roster!

dmoore, coalition......agree that they didn't get equal talent for BM, no doubt, but you guys aren't considering his fairly big contract, as to another reason they traded him--they downgraded talent for sure, but they also obviously wanted to dump that contract too--reality.

I know your location, junkey.

This is our team biatches. Deal wit Itz

BPA, unfortunately they didnt use Marshall's money to upgrade the team. Or the money from Hard Knocks.

why would we take baarkley when we would already have thill with a year under his belt. so unless he looks awful this year no reason to take barkley, turn it into a ton of picks

After trading Marshall, most analysts have the Dolphins as the least talented team in the NFL. Thanks Ireland.

Good point. I was just revisiting one symptom of a festering mess. I have no problem getting rid of BM if you are going to then find a suitable replacement. Ultimately, there just dosen't seem to be a clear vision or overall improvement in previous areas of need other than QB. Ireland's talent acquisition sucks. This team continues to stand still or go in reverse when it should be moving forward. Ireland's body of work speaks for itself. He's doing WAY more damage than good.

Barkley is head and shoulders better then Tannehill. If we are 2-14 or in a position to get Barkley, Tannehill will have stunk.

If Ireland is running the show, we would probably end up with fewer picks. Just sayin'. One could also argue drafting a WR, but he'd screw that up too.

barkley hasnt done a thing yet. if barkley shows this year hes much much better than u could draft him and deal thill, long way down the road though

Just because Tennehill was a high pick doesnt mean he'll be a good player.

JI is extremely well respected around the league. I know many of you will refuse to believe that, but it is true.

Well respected around the league? So what does means, he regularly attends thier white power klan meetings?

We're all hopeful Tannehill works out. But the jury hasnt even begun deliberations.

dmoore and coalition--all true, not disagreeing with you, just adding a very important factor in the decision to ditch BM.....which no one even mentions--and I don't think using that money to upgrade the roster is an option (unfortunately) because I think they were going to be over or near the cap if they kept him (another reason they ditched Y Bell.....$$).....so they likely would've had to trade or release someone else if they kept BM--ie. a roster upgrade isn't coming with that $$....its already spent.

Preseason is supposed to be for ironing out the kinks before season start. But hell, we look like a large chunk of crumpled metal thus far.

The team is way below the cap from everything I've read.

also agree that if they are in a position to draft Barkley, whether he's proved anything or not, they have to take him--upgrade that QB position if possible, they can compete for the #1, Tannehill hasn't proven anything yet.....and you can always trade the other guy in a year or two if needed.....a young talented QB is a valuable chip.

If these scrubs are anywhere near the cap Ireland should've been fired a long time ago.

way below the cap now, after trading/releasing BM and Bell.....but reports over the winter had Miami at or near the cap.....dont you remember folks freaking that we stunk but were already at/near the cap?.....which is why we couldn't be major players in free agency? Langford and Merlings contracts are now off too.....they were close to the cap earlier in the year.

and after ditching some of those guys, they were then able to extend Wake too....

Right now, I see nothing wrong with Tannehill, besides the obvious, that he's a rookie. Draft Barkley, and we'll see the exact same thing because he would be a rookie too.It would be difficult for Barkley top overcome the blocking of the right oline too.

That damn Fasano set the stage for the crappy offensive start Friday night with the easy pass drop. We have young inexperience wr's and Fasano leads the way by showing them its ok to drop easy passes.

The quarterbacking's no longer the urgent issue. This is a virtually talentless team. Holes all over the place, with nothing left but to sink.

this was being reported back in Feb, by this source and others......dont know how the numbers finally sorted out but the point is that trading/releasing BM and Bell had a lot to do with money/contracts> http://www.phinnation.com/?p=2029

BPA, I think now we are way below the cap. We have to be. Why even talk to Peyton Manning if we were at the cap? How can we be near the cap and have no talent? I think we are way below the cap now. But, I'm not a cap expert.

Until the oline, wr, and defensive issues are solved, this teams going nowhere even if we had Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and drew Brees on the roster.

the best thing going for miami this year is that this division could be the worst in football....Bills and Wets look like overhyped fruads...just sayin!!!

YG....dont disagree, I think Tannehill looks fine for where he is and hopefully will continue to develop.....even if they didn't draft Barkley, its likely they could get a big haul from another team in a trade--just saying that it would be great if they were in a position to draft him, whether they take him or trade the pick--cant have too much talent at QB.

the fact remains; our cupboards are bare and we are without playmakers. we play soft. its not fair to philbin.
