Post-mortem after 2nd loss in 2nd preseason game

Worried about the Dolphins?

Well, it is not exactly time to push panic buttons. But it is time to identify where such buttons are located because another month of this stuff is going to be bad.

"We know we're better than what we've showed," Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore said after last night's 23-17 loss to Carolina, a game which wasn't as close as the score because the Panthers totally outplayed the Dolphins early when the starters were in the game.

"Yeah, we should be a little concerned."

This was a game that was supposed to give clarity to the Dolphins quarterback competition. It didn't. Coach Joe Philbin was asked if he'll be able to go through with his plan of naming a starter for next week and he seemed at a loss for an answer.

"I don't know that to be honest with you," he said. "I really don't."

Nobody was happy with their work. Ryan Tannehill wasn't.

"Obviously, it didn't go the way I wanted it to go but I was excited to ge out there, compete with the guys and I think it's a starting point," he said.

This also is true: As I wrote in my column Tannehill didn't get much help from anyone. Moore, meanwhile, failed to step up when he had the chance.

"We got a lot of work to do," Moore said. "You have to credit Carolina, they came out and played well. But we have a lot of stuff to work on."

The Dolphins ran the ball 12 times for 37 yards Friday night. Yet Philbin wasn't all that concerned about it. He said it has not been a point of emphasis. That's good. But maybe the Dolphins should start emphasizing it a bit.

Because the regular season is coming.

Check out Tannehill below in part of his post-game talk:

Ross is mum. Good.

So, watched the game, and it'll make me think of downgrading my 8-8 prediction (to the 4-12 - 6-10 range). Most surprising is how bad the defense is. I watched the 'Skins up here in DC go from the 4-3 to the 3-4, and it does take a couple of years to get the right players. But this is atrocious. Sure, many starters missing from the lineup, but last week wasn't much better. Secondary (as usual) are basically spectators (watch passes caught and taking awful angles).

On the plus side, I'm not sure what game anyone else was watching, but Ryan Tannehill earned a starting spot to me. Matt Moore, really? Underperforming against backups, and you think this guy, after 6 years, deserves to start? Puhleaze! There's absolutely, 100% NO REASON to start Moore. This is a rebuild, throwaway year. The best thing that can happen this year is Ryan Tannehill gets experience so he can really shine next year.

Also, this game adds to my continuous criticism of the GMs philosophy. It's not about not enough stars. It's the WRONG stars. Offensively and defensively, we need playmakers. That's stars at the QB, WR, TE, CB, S, LB positions. Tannehill is the best Ireland's been able to do in his tenure here. Vontae's looking like a flame-out. Sean Smith is now the top CB on the team (by the way, blame the replacement refs, because that INT which was called a penalty was textbook; Smith had his forearm on the receiver, which is legal, and turned his head to the ball, again, textbook. Horrible call). Clemons, besides that one strip, was horrible. He got juked badly by Williams on a long run, and was non-existant in pass defense. Looks like Jones is our only acceptable Safety.

Vernon, did you even see him all night? Egnew, probably should be cut (seems like a waste, doubt he develops into anything). Again, at TE, there's Fasano, and Clay, and then a HUGE dropoff. Misi? Bye bye.

I can't believe I'm asking for this, but how about some more balance in playcalling. Why can't there be a happy medium? Henning did nothing but run, Sherman does nothing but pass. It's a good mix that keeps defenses off balance.

We need help. We need more talent. The best WR in the group (besides Bess) is that kid Hogan "7-11". He should have Hartline's spot IMO. He's a good complement. We can upgrade Hartline, Naanee, "Ankle-Weights" Wallace, Marlon Moore next year (and the year after). So start Hogan to give him NFL experience too.

This is a "gain experience for the young guys who are promising" year. Forget the record, it'll be bad. Get your core "keepers", and let Ireland or another GM get to work next Draft.

As the team is looking worse, our competition is getting better (Carolina>Tampa, Falcons>Carolina, Houston>Falcons).

Better get it together, quickly.

What's with that constant sideline pattern throwing the ball low and away from the receiver. So you gain a first down but not one big play in 2 preseason games while the D is getting torched playing the run and pass. Egnew, Davis, Smith, Misi, Clay, the list of flops on Ireland is too long to name. Why are we rooting for these losers that he picks. Ross you've been a part of another flubbed season. Good luck with the empty seats.

I hope that A-hole DT of Carolina that tripped Lamar Miller last night by raising his leg at the last minute to bring him down gets a hefty fine from the commissioners office for it. That kind of thing can end a players career, there is a reason it comes with a 15 yard penalty.

Unfortunately the Jr. High refs we have in place either can't see things like that happen, or haven't a clue as to what the rule is.

The PI against Smith was total hogwash. The ref that made that call is lucky I wasn't a coach on the sideline he'd still be hearing from me on that one.

Funny how the catch of the game promo used a catch that had it been reviewed, would have been ruled incomplete. The ball hit the ground out of bounds and the receiver lost control of it, then recovered.

My main concern however is with our LB play, even with Dansby in the middle we really don't get any big plays out of the trio. I think Austin Spitler is a better MLB than Dansby, he makes plays from sideline to sideline and he knows how to fill a hole. Koa Misi should get his license to sell insurance.

I hope the coaching staff takes a totally objective look at our LB play, and plays the guys that have made plays on the field in games, not the practice field heroes.

There will be several teams trying to sneak talent onto there practice squads that we can use. I look for Ireland to put in a lot of waivers for these players, many of which he missed in the draft. The roster cuts could be very valuable if our gm and coach can orchestrate the proper talent. After-all, we know that this team was built to play Parcell( saboteur ) football.

Your post is now up for the prestigous

(So far)
(It's still early)

The fact that we needed to get some help at receiver is showing up now. But they didnt make much effort at it. Thanks for totally ignoring a GLARING problem.

facts: ireland is the GM. cupboards are bare.

Looks like the suicide help lines will be busy today in Dolphinland.

Only saw part of the game and while it's hard to walk away from too many positives we were missing a ton of starters and it is preseason. I think this team might be hard pressed to do what they did last year going 6-10. The real question will be what do they do to get better. No question WR will need to be upgraded but I think they'll need another OLBer and help at cornerback and at safety. Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm confident the OL will be better and it would be nice to think Tannehill will be the answer. Time will tell.

we gave away marshall(top 5 WR)for a couple of 3rd's,which we will surely waste(egnew).

The strenghth of our o-line was the two maulers on ther left side. Can thesse guys zone block? I don't know, and do our coaches? I expect some changes, perhaps some radical ones. What would be some acceptable ones in your eyes. Perhaps we trade some guys like Jake Long, Davis, Bush, and others that are what we think of as corner stones in this team. Do we trust this new regime to get the best for these players? I would like to think that we can. I like smash-mouth football. But it appears that the league is moving away from this. I think this is much to do from goodhell, but that is a differnt topic. What is it going to take to win now?

Teams should show SOME improvement in the preseason. This team has shown none.

Defense was as bad, if not worse, than against Tampa.

Offense continues to seem inept against 1st team defenses.

Where is the improvement from last week? Philbin said they would put more attn t game planning this week. It didn't show up.

The defense is very poor & the oline still doesn't look good. I saw Martin get pushed back causing a 4 yard loss by Bush & saw him get laid on his back by a bull rush causing Tannehill to almost get sacked and throw a ball away sooner than he liked. IN SUCCESIVE PLAYS.

3-4 wins is about right. I don't see this coaching staff amounting to much with this talent. The problem is Ireland. He has amassed inferior talent across theboard at EVERY position. If only Ross could see what is plainly obvious to everyone except a few homers on this blog.

P-Ussy Riot!

You just realized that the game is going away from "Smash mouth" Football?

It's been that way for 10 years now.
Welcome badger.(Your a few years behind, But Hey, Your a few steps ahead of the last regime.)

WTF, you reiterated my post twice and then said noting. Do you have a constructive comment?

Wow. Has a coach or d coordinator ever been fired before the season started? I think we need to start rebuilding again LOL

This is exactly what I expected to see and it isn't going to get any better this year. We looked pretty good for the last part of the season last year, but the brain trust decided to blow up everything and start over again. New coaching staff and new offensive scheme, so what in the world do you guys expect?? This is going to be ugly and like I said before I expected nothing more, anything more than ugly would be an improvement and a pleasant surprise.

Not much being said about Pat Devlin, He had the best night of all. Sure hope we keep him.

ur basically correct, but otoh---hows about picking up/drafting a frikkin' legit receiver???

That is obvious, wtf, since you have no inclination of proper sentence structure.

wow that was ugly. and please stop the saying that the defense is soild. this might be the worst d in nfl. gonna be a long ugly season

I posted after the first preseason game that the biggest issues the team faces are:

1) Consistent Defense - need pass rush to make DBacks better and need to stop the run. The safeties look a mess...nobody is solid and reliable. I think the OLB spot is wide open...not thriled with Misi, Guyton or Trusnik. I still don't know who is more reliable Marshall or Smith (I still think Smith is a bad tackler). I hope that when the starting squad comes together to finally play on the fiel at the same time we will see improvement. I am comfortable wtih Davis,Dansby, Wake, Odrick, Solai, Burnett, Starks, and Vernon.

2) Need to protect the QB - we can't let THill get killed in year one. Martin and Murtha looked terrified and slow out there last night. Really disappointed with both and they need to Man Up. Not sure what happens a RG but somebody needs to step in and solidify that spot.

Areas I am less concerned with:

THill looks fine for a rookie. He has been able to develop scoring drives. He has shown a strong arm. He has shown a command of the offense by calling options at the line. He has to learn how to manage a collapsing pocket but I think that will come quickly as he is very athletic. I have seen NOTHING from Moore to suggest THill should not start. I am not worried about the QB - In THill I trust!

The running game will improve with a steady dose of Bush. The preseason has only seen him run no more than 10 times. I am not thrilled with Miller's performance I think he needs to be beat players in the open field. I still think Thomas will be fine in the short yardage situations. Not worried about the the running game.

I am not happy at all with Egnew, seems like another Ireland blunder. We could have gotten a solid LB or WR with that pick But I still have confidence in Fasano and Clay. The TE position will be fine.

I share everyone's concern over WR. I am fine scrapping troubled players like Beast and 85. But we need to see a starting line up take shape. Nanee and Hartline are nowhere to be seen. Gates is another Ireland bust. Right now I see Bess, Wallace, Moore, Pruitt and 7/11 as the top 4. Fuller has a chance to make the PS. Thigpen seems like a solid returner with speed and should make the team. I am fine with that line up knowing it has to be addressed next year with our top pick.

its a 3-13 team, maybe worse. getting the number one pick would be huge. we could trade it for a big haul

I agree Bill. This is even more reason to not start RT till late in the season.

bill I agree. The 1st defense hasn't stopped anyone yet this preseason. I think they've allowed scoring drives every time.
Coyle could have one of the shortest tenure's at D-coordinator ever. Someone's head will roll and it'll probably be Coyle's

O-line isn't doing their job, secondary sucks, defense can't tackle, no pass rush....Sounds like the same team, different year. I was watching the Ravens/Lions game last night & Brian Billick point out all of their draft picks on both teams are probably going to make the team. Bear in mind that these are both playoff teams so their rosters are a little tougher to crack than a 6-10 team.

The Dolphins drafted two WR's who won't make the team, a LB who has been invisible, & a TE in the 3rd round that won't see the field this year. Like I said last week Ireland said he wants to build through the draft but his picks continue to miss.

I'd be shocked if this team finishes better than 6-10 so Philbin might as well give Tannehill the starting job. If there was ever any doubt that Ireland is incompetent as GM we'll know for sure when this season starts. I don't like our owner but w/o Sparano around Ross won't be able to save Ireland's job if we start the season 0-7 again.

If we start slow again it's WAY past time to find a GM that knows how to build a team. And then the question becomes--does he want Philbin to be the HC in 2013 or does he want his own guy??? It's very possible that a slow start could make Philbin the next Cam Cameron.

Ok. So defensive starters were out....but really?

The last two weeks of watching the Miami Dolphins, both on Hard Knocks and just following in the news, has been excruciatingly painful.

They are really terrible. I don't mean terrible like how Tampa Bay or Detroit or Cleveland or New Orleans used to be in there sad years - they are like the WORST "team" I have ever observed and I am almost 50.

And that blank look Philbin gets when someone comes into his office and tells him bad news...that is even more scary.

I know these Dolphins have talent. And I imagine Philbin is going to be a good head coach - at some point. But HOLY CRAP this is very bad.

I am starting to lose hope...and interest.

sad part is ross wont fire ireland

mike nolan was an excellent D coord. there must be a good reason that he asked permission to leave(wanted out) before the 2011 season.

BTW--This is NOT a team with a bunch of cap space. Makes you wonder why a team that really has no shot of making the playoffs is costing so much???

nolans d sucked also, it choked late in games. no pass rush. the little amount of talent on this team is amazing, he could of throw darts at a draft board and gotten more talent. ireland is by far the biggest problem, guy is legally retarded in state of florida

What was the deal with Clay last night? Anybody know why he didn't show up in the boxscore? Did he get hurt or did the team hold him out or did he just plain suck? Curious? Where is this guy? Saw the bit where Sherman chewed him out on Hard Knocks. Is this some carryover?

Btw, good job Pat Devlin last night. I'm starting to change the way I feel about this guy. Hope he can keep it going.

no craig he played last week after that. caught a td. hes a te not gonna show up every game.

Ireland is doing well compared to most GM's in the last two years. He just needs to learn to spend the high pick for a playmaker and not always look for bargains.

He didn't have a SINGLE catch or rush last night. What gives? This is a guy I was expecting big things from this year. Shouldn't it be clear by now that there's some chemistry between him and Tannehill and Moore?

how is he doing well. we have no talent, hes wasted a ton of picks. and the team losses every year. how has he done good

Moore was outstanding. I have to see a lot more from Tannehill before you can convince me he is ready to start. He needs a good 3 years on the bench to learn. Don't rush him in and ruin him.

Craig Moron,

Brilliant, son.....did you spend all night dreaming that one up? Might be time to get a life, no?

This is not all that hard to figure out. The talent on the field is sorely lacking due not one bad draft but years of pi$$ poor personnel decisions. Ireland should have been gone a long time ago.

Having said that, there is enough talent (barely) on this team to have a 7-9 or maybe a 8-8 year. But I don't see that. And that falls directly on Philbin and the staff he assembled. Philbin needs to take a good hard look at the other side of the coin.

Pouncey, Clay, Thomas, Wilson, Tannehull, Martin, Vernon, Miller, Matthews

How many GM's have done better the last two years? Maybe a few, not many more.

I know its early, but that was ugly

The team looked awful against Tampa. I think they looked worse against Carolina. They don't play tough. The other teams out muscle and out hustle us at every turn.

Really disappointing. I say scrap the whole shabang and start from scratch.

Moore's experience shined. He just needs more weapons. I'm sure he will be the starter as he should be. He is already a top 10 qb.

Well, that game should end the cries for Tanny to start. He had that deer in headlights look. Clearly, he isnt near ready.

Is it my imagination or does Martin get beat or mauled on every single play? Seriously, how does Philbin say he is impressed with him?

Cam Philbin is another horrible coach. Sad they keep picking unknown novices for HC.

Sad they keep picking unknown novices for HC.

Tomlin, McCarthy, Payton were unknown novices too. They have rings now. JJ was known and Saban too, how well did they do?

You are stupid.

What does everyone think about last nights game. Check out Jimmy's thoughts at:

Ireland should've been fired when the Dez Bryant debacle happened. How does Chad Johnson get cut after 1 month yet Ireland is still here after 4 years? Ireland has buried the team 20 ft under ground.

two preseason games with vanilla game plans and all the rats are scurrying!!

i'll wait to see how the dress rehearsal next week goes before i start panicking.
the one thing i know for sure, tannehill should get the start next week too. he played pretty solid for a rookie. on the TD drive he made throws i don't think moore is capable of throwing. yes tannehill is green, but it's not like moore is some 10 year starter. he's not even a 1 year starter anywhere he has played.

i think martin will eventually be a vey good right tackle. he was up against a guy who's averaged 10 sacks a year. if you think going from LT to RT is simple, try eating with your opposite hand. you can do it but it takes some getting used to.

there are a couple of rookies that i think were great picks/pick-up. k. randall looks like a key guy in the d-lin rotation. 7-11 needs some time with the ones too. he is the best route runner i've seen since wes welker. the back-up center samuda. i don't know where he came from but based on his play i'm shocked he wasn't drafted. thigen looked pretty darn good too. better than the much hyped miller. miller and egnew have both been very disappointing. fuller looks pretty good too. but practice squad material. some of the WR's that show some promise may be gone too. there are gonna be a lot of guys getting cut soon.

hopefully after next week the right some of this and hopefully all the haters, who seem to outnumber the sane, ether calm down or go root for the jets. they would fit in nicely with the jet fan base.

We are rebuild dumb f@cks, last years Vikings and next years Texans.

Finn, after the last 2 games, what gives you the idea we should be crediting Ireland with a successful pick in Martin, Vernon, Miller, Matthews? I mean, do you not have to actually PERFORM in a REAL NFL game before it's decided if you will be a good player or not? We've seen more of Tannehill, but he was the right pick because a team with no QB in decades is ALWAYS right to draft a 1st-round QB. But those other guys? I'm not saying they won't be good players, I'm saying you can't even make that assumption at this point (2 Pre-Season games in). Vernon got his 1st-start, and he was invisible. Part of a defense that got torched. Miller hasn't done a thing in a game yet. And Jimmy Wilson? You mean a member of one of the worst secondaries in the league last year (and looking like it will continue this year)?

If that's what's considered a "success" in drafting, then that's why this team is in the position it is.

Ryan Tannehill = another Ireland bust

This season is beginning to have the feel of the Cam cameron era!!! Soft defense...inept offense...This organization consistently fail because they make the same mistakes over & over & over.....

This team is FAR WORSE then last year!

The Dolphins are an embarrassment to S Fla. Ross, sell the team or move your garbage dump team to L.A.
