Post-mortem after 2nd loss in 2nd preseason game

Worried about the Dolphins?

Well, it is not exactly time to push panic buttons. But it is time to identify where such buttons are located because another month of this stuff is going to be bad.

"We know we're better than what we've showed," Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore said after last night's 23-17 loss to Carolina, a game which wasn't as close as the score because the Panthers totally outplayed the Dolphins early when the starters were in the game.

"Yeah, we should be a little concerned."

This was a game that was supposed to give clarity to the Dolphins quarterback competition. It didn't. Coach Joe Philbin was asked if he'll be able to go through with his plan of naming a starter for next week and he seemed at a loss for an answer.

"I don't know that to be honest with you," he said. "I really don't."

Nobody was happy with their work. Ryan Tannehill wasn't.

"Obviously, it didn't go the way I wanted it to go but I was excited to ge out there, compete with the guys and I think it's a starting point," he said.

This also is true: As I wrote in my column Tannehill didn't get much help from anyone. Moore, meanwhile, failed to step up when he had the chance.

"We got a lot of work to do," Moore said. "You have to credit Carolina, they came out and played well. But we have a lot of stuff to work on."

The Dolphins ran the ball 12 times for 37 yards Friday night. Yet Philbin wasn't all that concerned about it. He said it has not been a point of emphasis. That's good. But maybe the Dolphins should start emphasizing it a bit.

Because the regular season is coming.

Check out Tannehill below in part of his post-game talk:

These meteorite(acorns) that Ireland drafts, greatest claim to fame is the brilliance and illumination in which they fall to earth. Not like stars that rise and rule the skies.

It's worse because in the eternal search for that next big outta Left field find the team is constantly neglected at some positions and always feels incomplete somehow.

I m up so late because a few days ago I pulled my groin(ouch). Just sitting up right now waiting for the ibupropen to fully kick in.

Right now I fully understand why players are out 4-6 weeks with groin injuries(ouch). LOL

The Pole of Self-Righteousness (PSR) is upon you.
1. Close your eyes and take a-hold
2. Stroke it gently
keeping the head close to your mouth
3. when you feel my hands on your ears open your mouth and relax and suck.

This team is one giant groin injury.

The moves Ireland makes are usually average to mediocre at best. Since 2008 there have only been 2 great moves(no-brainers) Long and Pouncey. Still Matt Ryan would have been a great option too.

They gutted the 2007 defense, which was better than anything we presently have now, or at least for the last 3-4yrs. Then the fa's they failed to land or go after. Then the sorry ones they did bring in. Then the bad to average drafting.

Ryan Tannehill may end up be only the 3rd real draft theyve made since 2008. 3 real nfl players in 5yrs. Now do you see why the team always feels so incomplete? Just to many bad or just plain average decision making here.

If you have a primary care physician get him to give you the 1000 Mili vicodin pills it will kill that pain fast. I rented a flick and everybody fell asleep on me so came back to the Football talk.

Since 2008, we should have at least 7-8 high impact players on this roster from drafts alone. At least another 3 high impact players from free agancy. We're sooooo far from that.

I thought maybe I was alone in that point of view, really since 2008 only 4 players are really contributing at all through the draft and all the NO-BRAINER picks we passed on early in all those drafts with players that are STARS today in the NFL. The FA's we missed and the misses we signed and still I hear a ton of people saying that bad mouthing or ?ing the F.O. is not being a fan blah blah blah! At what point is it alright to ? all of this or does it take a decade of rebuilding??

I dont like medication that can potentially form an addiction. Im more into pain management than taking full flights from reality. I have seen friends go off the heezy with prescription medication. Its not a pretty sight to see.

Agreed! I believe over the last couple of years we've sounded off the names while adding year in and year out, by the way F.A. rooks as well, remember V.Burfect? Looking the part big time in Cinn. with zero investment. You would think a LB STARVED team like Miami could have taken the flyer.

If Ireland says we dont need a rebuild, he needs to be fired right away. Fans are already blaming Philbin. Philbin inherited this talentless mess.

Vince Lombardi or Don shula would cut the entire team except for 5-6 players and half of them will never be anything more than backups on a real nfl football team. This isnt Philbin's mess its Ireland and his Parcellian friends.

Yesterday's Gone | August 19, 2012 at 02:51 AM

Fair enough but me I have taken when needed and when not needed not taken but as someone who dabbled when younger get the point you make.

Yesterday's Gone | August 19, 2012 at 02:56 AM

Won't waste space on a long post because now your preaching to the choir, AMEN BROTHER!

My greatest dream is that we travel back in time, Parcells takes Ryan, and then signs NoodleArm Pennington the day before preseason game 4, without a tryout, and Ryan holds NoodleArm's clipboard fpr the season.

They almost enjoy a mediocre don't rock the boat atmosphere. Remember R.Bush saying we stank and Dansby (Queen B of mediocre atmosphere) taking offense with Y.Bell? Feeling Ricky's radio rants or BM hating the culture? I think Dansby should go now and wonder if Philbin has the sack to make the moves.

There would be no Roddie White or Julio, G.O.A.T. Gonzalez ect.. Somehow feel Sparano, Henning and Lee would have ruined Ryan forcing the cat with no deep pass down his throat!

"and wonder if Philbin has the sack to make the moves".
The sack?
What about the 'Pole of Self-Righteousness'?

GOOD NEWS---since Tony went to the Jets their offence is looking like crap, Thanks Tony
THE BAD NEWS------ The fins looked like crap again friday it looks like a race to the bottom if this keeps up we will be big winners. Thanks Jeff

Later catch you all when the sun sets again!

Had we drafted Ryan over Long this entire team would have a totally different look. Ryan would have been a day one starter, there would have been no need to bring in Pennington.

That means instead of finishing 11-5 that year, we finish winning maybe 5-6 games and draft top 10 instead of 27th. Ive always preached drafting 27th one year short of being 1-15 was the absolute worst thing that could have ever happened to this franchise. There wasnt yet near enough talent on this team to draft so far back.

At 27th we drafted Vontae Davis. Imagine what we could have done had we a top 10 pick instead? Also we would be picking top 10 that year in each round. Our entire draft would be totally different and more talented because we picked so highly each round.

But instead, dolfans were so pleased we were 11-5 and got a one and done playoff appearance. Now everything's been going to hell ever since. I absolutely hated 2008 because I saw bad repercussions coming down the road. Dolfans here thought I was crazy. Maybe they'll believe me now. LOL

The only reason Pennington was brought in is because Beck sucked and Henne was a 2nd rd pick and everyone knew he wasnt going to be a day one starter. Picking Ryan or Long would have changed the entire course and look of our present franchise.

Not taking anything from Long, but his pick over Ryan probably hurt this farnchise more than anything else the Parcellians did.

Ryan over Long

Heck, if we had taken Ryan over Long, we wopuld not have had to use the #1 pick on Ryan Tannehill. We still got a Ryan but got it backwards(Matt Ryan).

So you see, had we taken Matt Ryan, it still would have had a profound effect on 2012's draft. 5 fvcking years later.

....but hey Im addicted. Much like my addiction to the man bone. MMMMM mmmmm mmmmm love me some man wang. Bwaaa hahahahahaha jokes on you losers I've liked the skin flute all along!

Doesn't Armando get pissed off when you Flirt with Me Like this Monkey Boy?

You know, EVERYONE......and I do mean EVERYONE, they can tell just by reading this, that this is EXACTLY how you **REALLY** feel deep down inside(I guess I SHOULD just say "Down Inside", cause WE can tell you're not "Deep"....LOL....).

Anywhoo.........like I said, you're showing your true colors. Why all the impostoring? Everyone can tell this is REALLY how YOU feel. Why not just sign it Monkey Boy?

Hey....I got it......just sign in as: "El Presidente Of Odin's Wong" Fan Club? Huh? It's gotta a ring to it, no?

You know you like it. Just like you like a Dik In The Brain...............Dik Brain!

PS: Be careful though Monkey Boy/Dik Brain, if you get Mando jealous enough he's going to cut your "Meth Budget". Fvcking FeeeeeeeeeeeeAaaaaaaaaaaaaag-ROTFLMAO!

-Odin- ;)

Armando say Ireland says, "We have a bucnh of 4's, 5's, and 6's wr's".

Did anyone let Ireland know that sounds like our entire starting lineup on both sides of the ball, except for maybe 4-5 players?

We suck! Yet again! Ireland must go. Raising potatoes in Ireland, there's a job for him. Ireland in Ireland, HA!

I read up on the Ireland/Jones/Ross argument.

Believe me, you didn't offend in the least. I actually enjoyed reading it. You schooled his arse(AGAIN)right out in front of everyone. I LOVE it when that happens(it's also the reason he keeps changing his names. He's SERIOUSLY that stump dumb and stoopid too-ROTFLMAO. He TRIES to "Hide It").

Actually Fin4, it reminded me of when he got schooled on Dawn Aponte. In HIS world, Dawn evaluates players and tells Ireland who he can sign ;)

He's so stoopid. If he would just come clean and post with us under one name, we would teach him EVERYTHING he doesn't know about football.........which is ALOT!

PS: Don't challenge him about which player wears the tightest pants or who has the biggest Bulge! He IS an EXPERT in that dept-LOL!

-Odin- ;)

It never happens, instead of stars, theyre like small pieces of meteorites that fall harmlessly and unnoticilibly to the earth. Never to be seen nor heard from again.

I have put together some strong opinions based on reports, OTA’s, Training Camp/Practices and tapes of the first two games. I’m sure some will disagree and I hope those that do offer some good counter-points.

1. First and foremost. Right now, today, Tannehill gives us the best chance of winning.

I have always been in Moore's camp and hoped for the best. With that being said, he hasn’t put any distance between him and Tannehill. On the contrary, judging from their playing time, Tannehill seems to be at least a “Notch” above Moore.

Garrard throws a hitch in the gidget, but doesn’t even matter. He won’t be available. Up to this point, Tannehill looks like the best QB we can put on the field.

2. Derrick Shelby should be given every possible opportunity they can find. Granted he’s played against lesser competition-Fine. The fact is, the first teamers haven’t shown anything at all yet in the way of pressure.

Shelby has been playing strongside behind Odrick. We have high expectations for Odrick and we have a good idea of what he brings to the table. Thats great. Still, I think they should give Shelby some work with the starters to see if he can do as good. You never know until you give it a try. At least and especially during the pre season.

Fact: So far, Shelby has outplayed EVERY DE on our Roster. He has EARNED the chance to show what he can do with the First Team D.

3. For all the positive Sean Smith **Talk** we got from reports, I just haven’t seen it on the field. Sean should be the guy getting benched, not Davis. It’s obvious to me that our two best corners are Marshall and Davis.

I know their trying to make a point with Vontae, but at what cost? Valuable snaps are being had. Sean has had enough……….enough to prove he’s a liability on the field. The double move kills him everytime, he pulls up(takes plays off)on run plays to the other side of the field.

NOTE: Smith looks like he would be an awesome **Flag Football Player** when it comes to Run Support.

If there isn’t a major shake up involving Smith and the depth chart this week, MARK MY WORDS, Coyle(and us by extension)are in BIG TROUBLE!

4. Chris Clemons should be CUT! Plain and simple. I’m not pulling any punches and I don’t care about how many tackles he was credited or the strip and recovery.

In these two pre season games I’ve seen Clemons take more plays off than I’ve ever seen ANYONE take off. If the play was going away from his side, you can see him ROUTINELY pull up and just “Go Through The Motions”. It’s completely disgusting.

Not only that, think about it. Think about the past two seasons. Can you name any time EVER that Clemons made a big play? I mean other than chasing a guy down after a thirty yard gain.

Fact: Clemons doesn’t make any plays(unless it's 30 yards down field) and now I have two pre season games of him consistently “Taking Plays Off”. I would like to see Ronnie Lott kick his ass and then Philbin do his best Donald Trump with a, You’re Fired!”.

Clemons should, at the very least be demoted, if not just cut outright! Give Tyrell Johnson(who showed signs of life friday)and Tyrone Culver a shot.

5. Misi should be shopped if possible. If not, just cut the guy.

The first pass play of the game? A 15 yard gain by the TE Misi was **ALLEDGEDLY** covering. It got worse as the game progressed. Everytime he’s on the field, Brady will get him isolated with one of his Tight Ends. REGARDLESS of down and distance.

Misi sets the edge great. He’s very good against the run. But in coverage he’s a COMPLETE LIABILITY. Don’t think that every QB and Coach in the AFC East doesn’t know it either. This is after all a passing league.

Misi just doesn’t fit well in Coyles system and should be let go SOONER rather than later. Even though we sorely need more OLB's, we have at least a couple of linebackers on the roster right now that can handle this system better.

Misi plays the run GOOD. But he's a liability in coverage and doesn't have enough pass rushing skills to convert to a 4-3 DE. So that puts him in "No-Man's Land". Nothing personal, the guy was brought in to play the 3-4. He's now a victim of circumstance. He's the Odd Man Out. Ireland won't want us to axe him because of his reputation and the price he paid. But why put off the inevitable?

6. Get Hogan some quality reps this week and during the game. With the group of receivers we got, we can afford a quick little “experiment” for Hogan. Let’s find out right now if he can live up to the Legend he has become. It isn’t going to hurt anything and who knows? This guy can be the next best thing since sliced bread! Get Hogan in the mix and lets see what he can do!

Summation: Start Tannehill, Hogan, Shelby, Marshall and Davis. Demote Smith and Cut Misi and Clemons.

Lets get this Re-Build Going!!!!

Oh Damn!

I forgot to address Jonathon Martin in the post above! Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Ah, it’s just as well. I think I should go over both tapes again before I do.

Long story short, he was terrible Friday night. And I don’t just mean “Rookie” terrible. He was so bad I was thinking about monitoring the waiver wire my Damn Self!

(Seriously! I was thinking: Can we slide Hicks out and put Steinbach at Right Guard?)

I'm getting ready to break out the Telecaster.

On the Big Screen a paid Infor-Mercial came on with Song Writers from the 60's and 70's.

I said all that to say this:

Carly Simon had some SEXY-SEXY LIPS!

As a Bonus.........Beautiful sounds came out of them.

(I don't care what anyone says, I would've been "All Over" Carly back in the day ;)

My greatest dream is that we travel back in time, Parcells takes Ryan, and then signs NoodleArm Pennington.........

STFU Dik Brain. Everyone here can tell. You ain't fooling anyone anymore.

Your Greatest Wet-Dream is that Parcells takes Ryan and they both give you the "Noodle"...........

PS: Please sign all your posts as Dik Brain. Cause it's obvious, you've taken so many in head, it's given you Brain Damage ;)

It's Telecaster Time!

I think Dansby should go now and wonder if Philbin has the sack to make the moves.

Posted by: fin4life | August 19, 2012 at 03:04 AM

Great Observation! Dansby will soon be feeling the "Heat".

With Marshall gone, Dansby's the next in line of over-priced free agent signees. He'll either be forced to restructure or resign at reduced rates. Otherwise he'll soon be down the road.

Take into account the timetable for Philbin and Co. By the time their expecting to be competitive, how old will Dansby be?

Somethings got to give. LOL-When I heard he had opened his big dumb mouth about the Chad Johnson cut, I thought: Here we go! Another Porter/Crowder situation!

If Dansby isn't playing like Ray Lewis, he might want to keep his mouth shut!

-Odin- ;)

Looks like the Anti-Odin squad is out in full force, Anyhoooo, Like I said earler yesterday morning this could be a Longggggggggg, Long Year.
Odin, How's Debo?

Agree Odin, Dansby is a "Rich mans" Channing Crowder , I wonder what Channing(Stationary Bike Rider)Crowder's up to lately?
Anyone know?????

The defense can’t make a stop, the offensive line struggles to protect, and Miami’s wide receivers — a group referred to by general manager Jeff Ireland as a bunch of “fours, fives and sixes” on Hard Knocks — scare no one.

This from a artical and I believe Idiot Ireland said the saame thing on Hard Knocks, You gotta wonder who brought this garbage to the Phins.
Oh Wait it was Idiot Ireland.
Just with this statement it's obvious that Ireland is CLUELESS.

Ryan was not a big time college QB.
He is a tall Irish white guy at BC.
Parcells knew that when you bring a good QB to a s hitty team you get a s hitty QB.
He also knew that since your gonna get a s hitty QB better to pay him $1mil/yr rather than $10mil.
Ryan is cool and all but let's face it he plays on a team with 12 all-stars and can't win a plyoff game. He was the same in college look it up.
According to Mando in this blog Henne won the QB competition his rookie summer. Penny was fired from Jets the same day the signed Favre. Parcells gave him $10mil same day without a tryout - that was the problem. He couldn't bench him with that salary and NoodleArm couldn't throw so they invented the BACKDOOR wildcat.
If you've forgotten how it went down simply look in the archives.
My question: why was Parcells never held responsible in public? Penny $ 10mil + Wilford $6Mil = not 1 TD

Anyway besides me who remembers or cares?
No One.

Great article by Lebatard.....he is easily on of my favorite FINS reporters....

There seems to be some kind of conflict here between SMF(the load swallower, YG(et al) and odin(eye). Go to Curch. All of you. Right now!

Sure I remember, SMF(and care). We around here are light years away from being Fools.

Do you really think that $ doesn't change hands when some "peculiar" trades occur. C'mon.

We can't afford to be naive, at least down here.

Viva le Brian Hartline!!

Why do People consult these crappy reporters who don't know one thing about the Game of Football and some sometimes deceive on purpose for their personal benefit? I don't know.

- Oye, Julio, esta gente en los Blogs estan perdidos. - Dejalos. They haven't really watched Football for 50 yrs like us, Oscar

When Ireland refers to someone as a Football man he means those that understand the Game of Football thoroughly and are professional and diligent about their craft.

Pat Devlin needs more playing time at QB, I like the way he moves the bal up and down the field. Too bad he did not run the ball in for a TD on that last play.
I think he is impressive and can push the QBQ's for a starting position or 2nd string. Give this kid some playing time to see what he can do.
Play him second this week and next week.

Yes. One time, it might be coincidence. 2 times in a row, makes you think differently. I don't know how he did it but Devlin deserves a chance with better Players around him to see what he has.

You can see Ryan Tannehill's speed of thought is way ahead of most on the Team. But he needs to learn that, on occassions, you need to be patient.

There was some kind of monster bearing down on Devlin and he's not the biggest guy in the world. Throw it away.

You will make all the $ you want, pal. We don't care. Just don't interfere or even think of moving the Team from here.

Funny that Ireland comments that the WRs are 4's and 5's -- I'm not a GM and I knew that months ago -- and that is what he got for the team.

this is yet another poorly constructed "team" and that has to fall on jeff ireland. he has had so many "misses" in the draft and FA. jeff really doesnt have any idea of how to "build a team". philbin will be handcuffed with a large talent deficit. we are looking at 5-11 and another rebuild.

He's so stoopid. If he would just come clean and post with us under one name.....

Posted by: Coalition To Get Coalition Out Of The Closet | August 19, 2012 at 03:42 AM

And so why don't you do the same?

what do you KNOW about football...WH/WHO are your sources....

when is the last time you YOU had an article published....

I will patiently wait your response....

please let your VERY NEXT POST clue us in on why YOU are the AUTHORITY on what we should and should not read.....

Patiently Waiting

Kris, that was a good article by le Batard (and right on).

I learned something about Ireland that helps me understand his mediocrity. He was a kicker in h.s. who would make the harder kicks, but miss the easy ones. In one game his team lost by 3 points, he made a 59 yd kick, but missed 4 (2 from inside 30 yds).

Tells me the guy understands inconsistency. Sure, he can find a few gems here or there, but like other posters said, he's not knowledgeable in how to make a team. And the knowledge he does have is dated. It's very evident in the history since 2008 of the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons. We were both at the same place (the bottom) in '07. Both needed new HCs, new QBs and younger personnel. But look who they drafted (QB, WRs, traded for RB & TE). And what about us (LT, C, RT, CBs). Four years later, we had 1 winning Season since '07 (1 Playoff appearance). They've had a winning Season every year since (3 Playoff appearances).

The proof is in the pudding.

The offense is pathetic. No passing game and no running game.

Teams are finding starting TEs EVERYWHERE. They are like a just-stocked pond. Us, when we FINALLY understand the TE is an important weapon, we stumble on Michael Egnew. Clay might be serviceable, but will he even be as good as Chris Cooley? We'll have to wait and see, but I'm not optimistic.
