Tannehill outplays Moore, deserves chance to start

I must admit I didn't think it would be a good idea for the Dolphins to start rookie Ryan Tannehill this year -- at least not early in the season -- because I figured David Garrard would be good enough and Tannehill would be better served learning behind a veteran quarterback.

Well, that's not in the cards now.

Garrard is out of the picture. Although coach Joe Philbin refused to acknowlege Garrard is having knee surgery, likely today, the truth is he's out for at least two weeks and probably twice that long. By then, the Dolphins will have named a starting quarterback.

So the competition for the Dolphins starting job is apparently now a two-man race between Tannehill and Matt Moore.

And if the competition will be decided by whomever is playing better, then that answer right now has to be Tannehill. Obviously, that can change. In fact, it can change on an almost daily basis because as Philbin said, the competition was very close before the game was played.

"I don't think it's huge," Philbin said. "I think it's relatively close, probably."

But the Dolphins have had a scrimmage. And then the first preseason game was played ...

And Tannehill played better.

Moore completed 7 of 12 passes for 79 yards with an interception. His rating was 43.4. He didn't get the team in the end zone, which is my ultimate measure of quarterback success. I grant you, Moore faced Tampa Bay's starters in the first quarter. But he also faced the second-team defense and still didn't score.

Tannehill got the Dolphins in the end zone once and obviously that does not count the TD pass that Roberto Wallace dropped. The pace of the game seemed to pick up when Tannehill was in. He didn't throw an interception. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 167 yards. And he seemed to have control of the game, changing the play two or three times to get to better plays.

"We had a fast-tempo run play designed into our boundry and they had blitz called and if had he handed the ball off it would have been a minus play -- minus 3, minus 4 yards," Philbin said. "But he made a quick decision, no hesitation, saw it clearly, got the ball out and we got a seven or eight-yard gain. Those are the kind of things we like to see from a rookie quarterback."

Me, too. Those are the kind of things I like from veterans, too.

Moore is capable of making those kind of changes at the line. He is capable of playing well at times. But let's face it, if Tannehill is this close to him now, if he played better than Moore Friday, what is the point of holding Tannehill back?

Play him. Start him!

The Dolphins are clearly not a Super Bowl caliber team. The idea of nursing the psyche of veterans by starting a veteran is not valid as a result. And it really isn't a factor if the rookie is nearly as good now.

Why?

Because he's the future. And I'm not talking about the future in a year or two. At this rate, Tannehill might be better than Moore in a couple of months.

Even Moore accepts his competition is supremely talented. "It's evident and very clear he can play .. I know he's good and talented."

So why wait? Play the kid.

If Tannehill can show any further improvement in the next game I'll be ready to drop on my knees for him.

Unless you people are 9-years-old and are brand new to football, how could anyone with a brain attach ANY true meaning to these stupid games??

----------------------------------------------

Hey Jeffro, we thank you for coming here and straightening out us 9 year olds. What were we thinking, reading all these posts and responding to them? I'm guessing your 9 as well as you used all this energy to come here, read all the posts then respond with insults.
Your a green turd Jeffro, you will never shine and you have that NY stink on you. You have just been flushed.

I already dropped to my knees with the rest of the fans.

U should get up from urs after serving Moore up so well. Join the rest of us.

Ur going to start with the corny stuff again today.

U must really love Dashi's name in ur mouth. Cool, I guess I'll treat u like a fan.

All you clowns. I know you are frustrated, don't hide it, I'll take your load and get you right.

* Cool, I guess I'll treat u like a fan. Keep Blowing

I'll tell u when to stop. I don't care if u get locked jaw.

Someone really misses the sentinel. Sad

Dashi hurt ur Moore-ther feelings. Can't talk football anymore?

And now Twitter is suffering from hiccups and there's some kind of error in my betting place on Internet. heheh

^^

Someone is having a conversation with themselves?

Dashi baby, I'm here, come to papa ;)

All you can expect out of Tannehill is improvement, Dashi.

Kap if you need that list you were either born yesterday or have a very short memory. I won't do your homework for you. A quick glance at the rookie qb's who have started over the last 10 years will give you plenty of names of qb's that didn't need to marinate on the bench before becoming franchise players.

------------------------------------------------
No problem Ks. I will make your list for you. I made my list but will help with yours. You wanted great QB's who started day one right?

Top of list will be
P Manning. your starting off strong.
Cassell- Not great. didnt start day one
Palmer- Not great, did start day one
Rivers- good not great, didnt start day one
Tannehill- undertermined
Sanchez- He started day one but he sucks
Brady- Great but didnt start day one
Fitzpatrick- lol neither great nor a day one starter
Flacco- Not great, did start day one
Rothisburger- Great but was Pitts #3 day one
Weeden- undertimined
Dalton- Not great, did start
Schaub- very good, didnt start
Luck- Undetermined
Gabbart- Not great, did start
Hasselbeck- Not great, didnt start.
Henne- did start, sucked

Theres the AFC. 1 guy who matches your requirements and his 1st season sucked. I even added Henne for you. If you feel you need to spread your BS some more Ks, then do the NFC and spin it how you like.

Tannehill has the physical tools...it doesn't matter in that respect whether he was playing against starters or scrubs. With that said, mentally, he is not ready to play against a starting NFL defense for 4 quarters. What I worry about is inserting him too soon, and it killing his confidence. He can make all the throws, has a quick release, is strong and relatively athletic. If he's stable above the neck, then Miami has their future!

Just so I'm clear...

If he played like crap the Ryan lovers would have claimed he was a rookied and deserves a break.

If he play like a seasoned vet the Ryan and Ireland lovers would claim it was expected.

No way to tell until its all on the line. Even I could have made a couple of completions against Tampa's defense.

Mando,

Keep digging Philbin for information about Garrard's knee. I just don't like how this all came down.

Alot of good opinions for and against Tannehill getting the nod today. I'll drop my two cents in arriving late to the party! I want to see Ryan Tannehill take the 1st team snaps in our week 2 Pre-Season game Vs. Carolina which has a good front 7 to pressure him but weak D backfield which makes for a nice match up for Tannehill. It will make for a nice test for him given he will see some pressure but should see cracks on the back end to fit the ball.

The 3rd week of the Pre-Season is usually your dress rehearsal for the Regular Season were teams will throw multiple looks and formations at you in tuning up the starters for the Reg. Season and everybody usually goes the 1st half. I say give them both a Qrt. in that game Vs. Atlanta. Name your starter afterwards then let the #2 guy mop up week 4 Vs. Dallas while your 2012 starter at QB starts prepping for Week 1 Reg. Season at Houston, IMHO!

You guys got to stop with this Garrard stuff. He would never ending up starting anyways.

Burger 305, AGAIN, it wasn't 1 qt of football, it was 2 1/2, and RT command of the offense was self evident. If you didn't see it you don't have enough experience to evaluate him. Please please don't post misstatements to buttress your position. It's very transparent when you do that.

Voice of Reason,no he didn't, tell when he looked good and against who. Are you an idiot revisionist history.

Fireland, the only time Thomas ran the ball Moore ran him into a blitz, he had no chance.

JackSparrow, no you couldn't have since your a fat, unathletic kid sitting at a computer.

You cut me deep mike...

However, all Ryan has proved is he can play against 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Revis Island is a different story all together. Mario Williams is a different story all together. Tom Belecheat is a whole other level of story telling.

Wasn't so long ago Beck and Henne had pretty good pre season openers.

Time will tell and the truth will become self evident about Ryan TenneBeck.

garrard isnt the answer;he was discarded for a reason. jeff has assembled a team totally devoid of playmakers. a 5-11 record is attainable if all goes well. moore should start and tanne should watch and learn. he needs to be developed further so when his name is called,he will be ready.

I know there are people who doubt Tannehill because he threw 15 interceptions as a senior, but there was a guy named Marino who was not teh first QB drafted in his class because he threw not only more interception, but more interceptions than TDs.

Now I'm not saying Tannehil is Marino, or the second coming of him, but I like the kid and think he deserves a shot.

Mondo, after watching Moore last yr pull dolphin nutts our of the fire, and you figure after one preseason game that Tannehill has to be the starter over Moore. The Hearold should take away your pencil or not let you report anything. You media types should refrain from making stupid statements. why dont you go out and get a real job, anybody can type a game report and have a ton of more common sense then you.

Alot of the negative on Matt Moore is so untrue. Most of you guys who hate on Moore do not have a clue! Some have valid points. The analysis of his gameplay is mostly BS. I did not see the game yet but somebody earlier said he was bouncing balls in front of recievers. He might have missed one throw. OK, who doesnt. Somebody else said he ran a back into a blitz...give it a break. I was on ESPN CONVERSATIONS following the game and not one blogger had anything negative to say about Matt. Didnt Chad "headbutt" Johnson drop a sure first down killing one of his drives? As for Tannehill, numbers looked good...against people who will be packing groceries in 3 weeks. Thats good he did what he did. That certainly does not mean Tanne should be named starter. If he is CLEARLY a better QB than Matt, then start him. But I am a fan of Matt Moore and have followed him. Since high school. He is a very good QB who needs a break. Thought he got one last season when he had one of the finer seasons aMiami QB has had, outside of Marino, and too many people forget what he did last year. Go back and look at numbers and highlights if you need a reminder that he can. He CAN play. No doubt. We will see how it plays out, but MM8 is my man!!

Lets get Tyler Thigpen back at least his knees are good.Looks like another grim year ahead. Please make the beer at Sunlife a buck so we will have something to cheer about.

Watched replay today. I thought Matt played fine. I thought Tanne played well also. But I did not see anything that suggests he is better than Moore at this point. I heard some rumblings that even Devlin played better than Moore. NOT! Devlin is still not very good.

I guess you guys that thought Tanny did so great didn't hear what Bob Griese said about him. He floated and under threw a few. He also had a guy wide open in the end zone and under threw him. You also have to look at the plays that were called. They called more running plays when Moore was in. Don't blame him for going 3 and out when your RB only get 1 or 2 yrds. I can see Tanny starting against the Panthers. There Defense is as bad as the Phins. I can't wait for Tanny go against a REAL Defense. Lets see him against the Texans in Sept. He won't make it through the 1st quarter. LOL Cam was only 2/7 for 17 yrds.and was sacked for a 10 yrd loss before they got him out so he didn't get hurt.

Where are all the Coach FISHER lovers at? Sure glad the Phins didn't pull that trigger. He has a great QB and couldn't score or stop a rookie QB. LOL
