« Dolphins fear Long MCL sprain may cost 1-3 weeks | Main | Dolphins coach Joe Philbin: It's on the players »

Tannehill playing Wednesday ... but should he?

Joe Philbin and his staff usually sit together two days before a preseason game and map out the playing time for every player in the coming game.

When he spoke to the media Monday evening, Philbin had not yet conducted that meeting so he wasn't aware how much his quarterbacks would play. But he did know this much about starter Ryan Tannehill:

"He’s going to play a little bit,” Philbin said.

That's fine but the question needs to be asked:

How much is to be gained by playing Tannehill a little bit when the rookie will not have the benefit of having his blind side protected by left tackle Jake Long.

Long, you see, will miss the Dallas game after suffering a knee injury in practice Monday. He could miss between 1-3 weeks. So he could be ready for the regular-season opener but he's not suiting up against the Cowboys.

And that being the case, is risking Tannehill's health worth the handful of downs he's likely to get in a game that doesn't count? Or do the Dolphins believe so strongly that the rookie needs as many snaps as possible as to risk getting him injured (more than usual)?

Regardless of the answer, the hope is the Dolphins consider what is at stake. The hope is they weigh playing Tannehill a few downs to get him experience versus exposing him to injury because he's out there without his best blindside protector.

It could be argued that AFTER FITZ lost his title as and best qb IN THE DIVISION....Moore assumed the position....

that "2nd best QB"...now finds himself in a back-up role....

The starters and entire team need as many reps as possible considering they are running new systems. That being said I don't expect most starters, including Tannehill, to play more than 2 series.

If DeMarcus Ware is playing then Tannehill should DEFINITELY sit this one out!

"ArmandoSalguero

Final factoid on Vontae Davis trade: Jeff Ireland asked the Colts for T.Y Hilton or LaVon Brazill and was told no."

I don't mind that we traded Vontae but why didn't we do it during the draft when we could have helped ourselves for this year.

BTW--Even worse is that we took Egnew was taken 14 spots ahead of Hilton in the 3rd & Cunningham (who is not even going to make the team) was taken 23 spots ahead of Brazill.

There must be some frantic searching for OL and WR help by Ireland, et al. Good luck, sons, but please, get some Prime Beef on the table, if possible, if not at least US D Choice.

Who cares if Armando is a Dolphins fan or not?? Makes no difference. He asks a legitimate question, should our rookie QB be out there with his best blindside protector being injured?? I think you can argue both ways and be right.

Mando,

He needs the reps so yes I'd start him. Every play whether it's in practice or in a game there is a risk of injury. Didn't Long just hurt himself in a practice???

Philbin needs to realize that this no huddle offense is a bad idea right now. He doesn't have the talent to execute.

When other teams like GB, NE & the Mannings do it, it's big chunk plays. When Miami does it, it's batted balls & incompletions.

All this accomplishes is it puts our very suspect D on the field even sooner & longer than it needs to be. This approach, if taken into the regular season, could be disastrous.

I bet Pat Riley who doesnt know crap about football would be a better GM than Ireland, at least he'll bring in some talent

We Have RB's | August 28, 2012 at 11:08 AM

I don´t think anyone could predict how much would Davis stink it up in camp. I mean he's a 1st rounder with talent coming in his 4th year; I bet they were hoping he could put the selfishness and laziness behind and actually play to his potential. Obviously they were msitaken...

ireland, after 5 years of drafts, is totally clueless on how to "build a team". its really a science and a mix of vet leaders and newcomers is essential for chemistry and development. with ireland in charge, philbin has no shot of being successful. tannehill has little protection and zero weapons on offense. who does he throw to???? cupboards are bare!!!!! ireland/philbin have now implemented a "gag order" on players about unpopular personell decisions.

Reality Check,

Agreed. If I'm Philbin I'd definitely be putting the emphasis on running the football like the Niners did last year with Alex Smith & the Falcons did with Matt Ryan when he was a rookie. With Bush, Thomas, Miller, & Slaton this is BY FAR our strongest unit on offense & gives us the best chance to compete on Sundays.

Two words that do not belong in same sentence, especially next to one another: "Dolphins" and "consider."

They consider nothing; they never think ahead or 'think things through.'

Arturo,

Ireland knew they had a problem with Vontae last year. That's a fact.

I just hope we lose so much this year Ross has no choice but to fire Ireland. This nightmare will not end unti IRELAND IS FIRED. Simple as that

I care if he's a Dolphin fan. Its a conflict of interest for him to hide his Patriots love and write about the Dolphins.

I don't like it.

I saw that Jabar Gaffney was cut by the Patriots. Based on last year's numbers he'd be our leading WR in terms of catches & yards. That's pretty scary....

Q: Is Eggnew?

A: Who cares? It's rotten regardless.

ANTHONY FASANO IS PURE GARBAGE. AND I SHALL BE HERE ALL YEAR TO REMIND YOU OF SAME.

gaffney would be our best wr right now, he should def be signed

They consider nothing; they never think ahead or 'think things through.'

================================

This is how I see it. Instead of thinking ahead we just start over.

Case in point we are bottom ten in cap space. Or we were bottom ten in cap space. Good GM's think ahead about stuff like that. Not declare REBUILD two weeks before the season opener.

Is it the "No Huddle Offense" or the "No Clue Offense"??

.........or the "No Quarterback & No WRs Offense"???

Agree with RBs. In fact, what we need to do, as much as y'all hate it, is bring back a Wanstachian/Sparanoian running attack with Thomas and Bush getting 50 touches (combined) a game.

Our only playmakers are Thomas and Bush.

We need I formation and running the ball to keep the D off of the field, and try to win games 17-14.

We Have RB's | August 28, 2012 at 11:22 AM

Agreed. I would even say they knew of this since they drafted him. However, my guess is they were willing to take a risk and give him time to outgrow these. The D finished strong last year so there was probably reason to believe he would turn the corner this year...

I just hope we lose so much this year Ross has no choice but to fire Ireland. This nightmare will not end unti IRELAND IS FIRED. Simple as that

Clue,

I'll say this--we're one of the 5 worst teams in football. Plus I think Ireland/Philbin will cut Hartline & Dansby which should put us over the edge so that we're the worst.

WHY TRUST HIM NOW MANDO! DID YOU NOT WRITE THIS LAST YEAR?

"So the work is worthy of a C-plus, in my opinion.

That's because there has been no awe inspiring pick. There has been no take-your-breath-away, give-that-personnel man-a-prize selection. Not one Dolphins pick the past three years has been a game-changer. Not one Dolphins pick the past three years has brought a player other teams must game-plan around or for. Long isn't that because, by definition, left tackles can only change the course of a game by screwing up."
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/armando_salguero/

Jabar gaffney is on the board for free, can we for once take advantage of a NE mistake. A quad injury is usually not a big deal. Even with one leg he would start for this joke of a (IRELAND QUOTE: I'm happy with this group of receivers) receiver corps. Let's see how Ireland will F&*k this one up. I know it's coming, I just pray for the end of the Ireland era, so we can finally get some respect. Philbin has the knowledge and expects integrity from his team, but going along with Ireland's brainstorms is disaster waiting to happen. Wait till you see how a decent QB with 3-4 good receivers (not Great) lights up the Dolphins secondary now. Just can't wait!!!

By the way, my Wannstachian/Sparanoian running attack also requires, of course, throwing the ball down the field vertically from time to time, to keep the D honest, or they will stack the box and we'll be 3 and out every time.

But generally, we need to run the ball. Not only are our RBs our playmakers, but like others said, for the sake of the defense. If we are going to punt a lot, we at least need to take 5 minutes instead of 1:40 off the clock with each possession. Wannstache used to go 11-5 every year with this approach, winning games 17-14 or so.

I think Thomas will show he's a stud this year.

fasucko that would never work. our oline is awful

I gotta hope that Philbin agrees with us and that he's not lying that the preseason was just to see what guys can do and we've seen nothing like what will happen in real games, which is Thomas and Bush combining for 40 carries rushing and 15 receptions.

Bush and Thomas need to account for 3,000 total yards this year, combined.

Agreed. I would even say they knew of this since they drafted him. However, my guess is they were willing to take a risk and give him time to outgrow these. The D finished strong last year so there was probably reason to believe he would turn the corner this year...

Arturo,

Red flags which is why Vontae dropped in the first round. The EXACT same thing they did with Merling. Remember when Parcells & Ireland said they would only be drafting HIGH character, high motor guys. And then Ireland has the nerve to trade for Marshall??? How did he think that would turn out???

I'm not a fan of just firing people for the sake of firing people but Ireland has missed on WAY too many picks & signings to still have a job. Ross needs to pull the plug before there's riot among season ticket holders.

The trade of Vontae Davis was solely at the behest of Philbin so don't blame Jeff Ireland if it doesn't work out. Kind of like past poor drafts - completely the fault of Bill Parcells. Too bad that Jeff Ireland has to work with so many idiots.

come on guys. Gaffne is small, skinny, and now old and not very fast. he's done.

and I'm a gator.

that's just how it is.

Gaffne is not the solution

I insist everyone answer this question, what game changing play has Koa Misi ever made in his career just name one? I dont understand why he's starting? Whythe F is he starting? Im being serious. Name just one please

Doubt that Jeffy "Ball Boy" Ireland will pick up a known WR in next few days........he'll keep pushing the WR are good-as-a-group-and-a-work-in-progress BS.

They will let T-Hill die on the vine.

That's true, Bill. We're awful at every spot except RB.

But my theory is that we can stay in low scoring games (assuming the D can play like at the end of last year) and we can win a few games and lost games 17-14 instead of 58-14 like we will if we try to please fans by joining the "passing league," if you follow me.

Us trying to fight fire with fire throwing the ball leads to humiliations where the Pats are up 36-3 at HALF TIME.

Wait till you see how a decent QB with 3-4 good receivers (not Great) lights up the Dolphins secondary now. Just can't wait!!!

Finless,

Well I remember it the last few years (NE last year in Week One & the Jets two years ago) before the defense decided to play.

You're right though. The Texans are going to be laughing their a@@es off by half time.

come on guys. Gaffne is small, skinny, and now old and not very fast. he's done.

and I'm a gator.

that's just how it is.

Gaffne is not the solution

Fasucko,

He's not a great WR but other than Bess he's better than Naanee, Moore, & Wallace. At least he can catch a football.

My two cents, I think it's a good idea to play him. he needs all the reps he can get. Not that I think he loks bad, on the contrary, he looks great. he just needs seasoning.

Of all the guys released yesterday, the one I find most intriguing is jake Ballard. This guy is a tough as nails receiving tight end. It would be hard for him to break into the best TE corps in the league in NE, but inn Miami much different story. He did sustain a serious injury though last year, don't know if it has any lingering effects.

Regarding the Vontae trade, it's the continuance of a long term trend that should have Jeff Ireland on the hotseat for sure. The list of 2nd round picks that didn't make it since he and Parcells got here in well documented. In addition in the last six months they've traded a 1st and 2 nd round picks between marshall and Vontae for a 2nd and two 3rds. That's horrible asset management. The fact that Parcells is tied to a bunch of these picks complicates matters but man to burn so many prime assets is crippling. 1st and 2nd round picks should be the backbone of your franchise.

I insist everyone answer this question, what game changing play has Koa Misi ever made in his career just name one? I dont understand why he's starting? Whythe F is he starting? Im being serious. Name just one please

Posted by: Clue | August 28, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Simple, he's just better than the guys behind him. That's not saying much, but, no other way to explain it.

Also, I agree with Reality Check. The no huddle should be scrapped until the talent to execute it improves.

Pace is great but, the Defense will suffer. I can't imagine even being competitive if they have to keep going on the field after a 3 & out & only minute taken off the clock. With that little rest, they'll be done by half time.

The truth is, Is it safe to say he has never made an inpactful play in his NFL career?

I'm telling you guys--don't be surprised if Dansby gets cut. He's still not healthy & he made more negative comments to the media today.

Like I said I don't have a problem with Philbin getting rid of players he doesn't want. My problem is that he deserves a GM that didn't put this team behind the 8-ball to begin with. And I don't buy that whole blame Parcells nonsense. The way Ireland handled the roster before last season at CB with Will Allen, at RB with Larry Johnson, & RG/RT with Carey & Columbo was enough to see that he's incompetent. Notice how both players are still not signed.

Getting rid of Ireland will AT LEAST give Philbin & this organization a fresh start & a chance going forward.

What's up with Odrick?

Haven't heard his name in quite some time. He still on the team or just another Ireland bust?

with the owner in irelands pocket, there is no one in place to oversee jeff's decisions; no one who jeff has to answer to. the situation is scary; how 1 man can ruin a team in just a few years. now he has told philbin to instruct the players not to be critical of any personnel moves.

Clue,

Plain & simple--Misi is a JAG (Just Another Guy). But don't blame Ireland, it's all Parcells' fault!!! LOL!!!

Do people really believe that Parcells made every single draft pick & FA signing w/o Ireland, the personnel evaluators, & the college scouts being involved??? Ireland & that whole staff need to be flushed.

all those guys have retired

fasucko let it go man. this year is over. the more we lose the better. we need first pick in draft and we should get it

a long, long list of players aquired and cut over the past 4 years would really shock alot of fans! somehow we worked our way to the bottom of the league.

i agree on misi, hes awful another wasted high pick

Greg,

This is REALLY not meant to be a slur but are Ireland & Ross lovers??? I just don't understand why Ireland gets a pass. Ross has clearly been a bad owner so far but the guys is a VERY savvy business man & intelligent enough to see that his investment in this franchise is sinking. If we're rebuilding then rebuild everything starting with the foundation.

I am in Lima in Peru much always for the MIAMI DOLPHIN! Who does know the players what are on the team today do they make the alterations of the managers? when does start this process?

Please you will tell me of this now. Thank You!

Odrick another bust, has hasnt even touched an opposing QB in preseason.

a long, long list of players aquired and cut over the past 4 years would really shock alot of fans! somehow we worked our way to the bottom of the league.

Greg,

And continuing to get worse. This year we pick 8th after starting the season 0-7. Next year we'll be drafting in the top 5. You can bank on that.

Eduardo, The Dolphins suck and will be in the cellar this season, you might as well find a soccer team to follow or enjoy the Peruian ladies

We Have RBs, The problem with drafting in the top 5 is Ireland will be making the selection..

The Fins are not going to Scrap the No-Huddle. Wr's better just start catching Passes.

Again the Fins will be 50/50-Run/Pass. Sherman calls it down the Middle. The Fins will Run. Why beat up the RB's in the Pre-Season?

Specially if we have Questions at Wr's in the Pre-Season?

Needed to see The Wr's and MArtin's Pass Blocking at RT. Plus, needed to Evaluate The Qb's not the Rb's. U don't evaluate all that running the Football.

The Dolphins need to make sure what they have in the Passing Game before the Season Starts. Specially if T-Sizzle is going to Start. Notice How T-Hill tucked it in once or twice the last game and None against Carolina?

The Jets aren't the only team holding something under their Sleeve for the Regular Season.

Do people really believe that Parcells made every single draft pick & FA signing w/o Ireland, the personnel evaluators, & the college scouts being involved??? Ireland & that whole staff need to be flushed.

Posted by: We Have RB's | August 28, 2012 at 12:06 PM

This is a very valid point that many of the Ireland apologists don't want to acknolwedge.

It's highly unlikely Parcells made any selection w/out Irelands input. He was the guy scouting & giving tuna the bottom line analysis of these players that were ultimately drafted.

if tuna got bad info, do you blame tuna for the pick or the guy giving the info? Even if Ireland didn't make the picks, he was still the guy ultimately responsible.

We all know he needs to go. It's useless to debate it at this point. The sooner he's gone the betteer.

I honestly feel we need to start over from scratch and get rid of the "star players" on the team for draft picks. Trade Long and Dansby, (I doubt anyonw wants him at his contract), Bush will be leaving after this season. Unfornetley though are the only players worth a crap on the team LOL

Agree with RBs. In fact, what we need to do, as much as y'all hate it, is bring back a Wanstachian/Sparanoian running attack with Thomas and Bush getting 50 touches (combined) a game.

WHOA!!! Slow down there big fella. I know the Dolphins have dissapointed us, but spare the team and its fans the torture of watching the singularly incompetent Dave Wannstedt run the team even further into the ground.

Dave Wannstedt's 'running attack' was so successful that it drove our best player to spend a season wandering the land barefoot smoking weed. Now granted -- I don't blame all of Ricky's idiosyncracies on Wannstedt -- but 400+ carries from a Special Olympics playbook is a bit much to take for any man.

Wannstedt failed in Chicago. He failed in Miami. He failed at the University of Pittsburg. He is the living football emodiment of the Peter Principple...his carrer pulled along by Jimmy Johnson the way Oprah drags along Gayle.

Tannehill shouldnt be the starter at all right now. He's looked horrible, has no WR's and a suspect OL without Jake. He'll lose confidence and end up like David Carr playing with these scrubs. Moore is better anyway.
