The reaction following 30-13 loss to Dallas

Some reactions from Wednesday night's press conferences and open locker room session following the fourth loss in four tries this preseason -- this time a 30-13 loss to Dallas ...

Joe Philbin was realistic about how bad his team looked in this game:

"That's unacceptable," he said. "Poorly coached game. We didn't play well. We had a lot of penatlties. We had 12 men on the field. We didn't tackle well. We didn't score touchdowns. You guys saw the same game I did, it was not a good football game, not a good performance by our team. I'm the head coach of the team and that's a poor job by me getting them ready. That's the facts."

Philbin is worried that the team he sees in practice does not show up for games -- any games so far this preseason.

"Am I concerned? Yeah," Philbin said. "The confidence I gain is when I watch guys practice and perform well. We've been a good team in practice  but we haven't transfered that to the game on a consistent basis and that's a concern, absolutely."

Some offensive line notes: Jonathan Martin started at right tackle and moved over to left tackle in the second half. John Jerry play practically the whole game. This was his chance to win or lose the starting right guard job.

The issues at receiver has put the spotlight on players that were supposed to step forward this preseason but didn't. Clyde Gates was one of those. Yet Gates is content with how he performed.

"The hamstring I had kept me out of camp a few days and I missed a game but other than that I'm very happy with the camp I had," he said.

Does Gates think he deserves a to be on the team?

"Yeah, I think I should be. I can't look at it no other way."

Understand that's one man's opinion. Gates has not been told he is on the team. "No I haven't been told I'm good. I'm just going with it, contoling what I can control. I've done everything they asked me to do. Whatever they asked me, I went out there and did it."

One of the most puzzling situations this training camp has been the play of Matt Moore. He completed only 4 of 12 passes this game. He completed only 20 of 51 passes this preseason. He threw two interceptions, including a pick six and didn't throw a TD or get the offense in the end zone.

I asked Moore why he has been unable to play this preseason anywhere close to as well as he did last year, understanding he played last year against starters and this preseason he's play primarily against backups.

"I don't know," Moore said. "I don't have an answer for you. I have to go back and look at the tape and continue to get better."

The regular season begins Sept. 9 at Houston. The Dolphins have 11 days to move heaven and earth and play well.

Any OL drafted lower than the 3rd round will not be able to make it in this league: you need to draft OL early or they're going to get run over.

Posted by: MiamiD20 | August 30, 2012 at 11:19 AM

I totally agree. Primarily because this has become a pass 1st oriented league. Pass protection is the primary thing rookie lineman are least to quickly excell at.

Because its now a pass happy league, if looking for a starter right away, you better not select your olineman later than 2nd rd. Jonathan Martin shows in his pass protection even 2nd rd is a stretch when looking for an oline starter right away.

Ireland is a no good son of a b.i.t.c.h!

Maybe the team looks good in the practice field because they are playing at a mediocre level on both sides..so that could be the reason.

"Vontae's grandma is also a prostitute."
-Jeff Ireland

MiamiD20,

Correction: I dont agree with drafting a olineman 3rd rd if looking to start him right away.

Backup yes. Too groom to start 2-yrs down the line yes. Start right away? Hell no, teams are throwing the bll about 65% of the time or more right now.

If it was still a run dominated league. Yes, you could feel fairly safe drafting an olineman to start right away. Then its, still a coin flip.

Yeah, this roster seemsto be so terrible, the mediocre can look good against the mediocre. Im sure thats now running thru Philbin's mind after watch 4 straight preseason losses and not seeing it translate t the games.

If Philbin can turn this team around and beat Houston, or go 8-8 for the season, i'd nominate him for Coach of the Year!

Yes, I can see how those 2 1st round pick OL we have have spent high picks on have helped keep our QB's upright long enough to throw incompletions.

This team NEEDS PLAYMAKERS. They need someone who can get open quick so the QB has time to dump the ball off to someone & trust he'll be open.

Unless you want to make the T eligble play a staple of the offense. You would think this fan base would have realized this by now but, apparently not.

The problem is that Ireland believes in building through the Draft and hates to give away picks. He has a free #2 now to use on a good established veteran. Let's see what he can come up with.

Agggaaaaaaiiiiiiinnnnnnn

From a Couple Days ago

The Fins Are Finally Rebuilding this roster right. Thru the Draft, Not Free Agency.

Hopefully we see more of that the next few days. The Waiver Wire is Not "REAL" Free Agency.

The Problem with the Last Rebuild was it was a Parcell's Rebuilt. Gut the Roster, Sign High $$$ FA's. Make Playoff's in under 3 yrs. Never win a Title

Problem with that is if U don't hit on FA's the Cap hit hurts the Team Worst than Missing on a Pick. Remember we Traded away Picks for a Wr. Traded Away Picks for Fasano, Ferguson, Adele, Etc. Etc.

The Fins went 11-5 and then they were adjusting for the next 3 years.

This New Rebuild is done the Right Way.

(Yes, We've been going thru this for 15+ yrs as a fan base but it's Philbin's 1st Yr. U have to like his Post Game Conference Yesterday. He was not happy. He was Angrier than Spoelstra after a Playoff Loss. Yeah it was Pre-Season but he wasn't happy with the Team.)

Thru the Draft

Philbin/Ireland didn't sign No high Priced FA's or Mid-Level FA's. Everything was Vet Minimum. Acquire Picks. Then Evaluate the Roster.

Philbin Is done Evaluating the Roster Now. Cut the Fat time.

Hopefully he stays true to his word and takes Potential over Experience. Even on the Waiver Wire. Dashi doesn't want to see the Dolphins signing players over 25. No Cooley, No Plax, No T.O., maybe not even J.Jones. But We do need Pass Catchers. Just get Young Guys U can Develop.

With that Said Fire Naanee and Hartline, Get Rid of Moore and Garrard. Fire Misi. Cut the team to like the top 40 and then Sign 13 other players from the Waiver Wire for the Season, then Draft another 10 come next April. Get rid of the other High Priced Players next year for Draft Picks. Then do the same Again the year after.

Just Please for the love of God, Don't Sign Free Agents to $$$ Multi Year Contracts for the NExt 4 years or until this team is Consistently Good. That is not the Way to make a Team. JJ didn't do it that Way, Shula Either. Even Belicheck.

Get alot of Draft Picks and go 50/50 or Better. That is the Way to build a Team.

Sun Sentinel Dolphins: Miami Dolphins to work out veteran WR Donte Stallworth http://sunsent.nl/PzO0CJ | Txt STOP FINS 2quit

So again, why did you get rid of Marshall??

We've tried drafting lineman early & pushing skill positions to later in drafts or bottom tier FA's.

How's that been workin out?

Somebody mentioned the good input our good Coaches are having on Ireland selecting Players. It is true. Look what wrs Ireland brought to play or to work out, cj, braylon. No way, Jeffrey, Philbin probably told him, get me so and so.

"Daniel Thomas earned praise from Dolphins coach Joe Philbin after rushing for 31 yards on five carries and catching a pass in Wednesday night's preseason finale against the Cowboys.
In the doghouse recently as revealed on Hard Knocks, Thomas had a 19-yard run and earned the start over rookie Lamar Miller with Reggie Bush getting the night off. "He’s definitely making progress," Philbin said. "Running the ball more physical." Thomas is worth a late-round flier in fantasy drafts. His current ADP is the late 11th round, making Thomas an affordable target."

Yesterday he was a bust remember????

Oscar,

I disagree. Ireland only believes in hunting acorns thru the draft. The proof's already in the pudding. Have you really taken an honest look at the ov erall collection of real talent on this roster?

Ireland picks with his eyes closed in rds 1 and 2 because then he can go on his perverbial acorn hunt in rds 3-7.

In free agency, Ireland's favorites are clunker fixer uppers, underperformers based on pay, damaged has beens, and borderline great wr's who dont score td's(Brandon Marshall).

vd, u lil' puxxie, when u said u wanna call nana and ire said no, not now lets finish up here 1st.
u puxxie should have said 2 that penis w/ glaxxes,
f! u!.
u aint my boss no mo. i b callin granny.
lol

Donte Stallworth is working out for the dolphins. Just dont let him drive in South Beach. He will run-over someone again.

I hate beating a dead horse but have been saying for sometime that the only draft picks Ireland has made that are truly NFL Caliber players are a couple of OL in 5 drafts folks those numbers don't lie. Yet he seems to be tasked with rebuilding his own mess?? Go figure!! In a League predicated on the vertical game he's 0-??? Take into account 7 picks in every draft and he's had drafts with multiple additional picks and that my friends is the reason you see the mess you see plain and simple.

I wanted to comment as well on the stupidity that Griese was talking about last night with the G.B. connection and G.Jones. Guys G.Jones normally drops a ton of passes Yr. and Yr. out. It is the reason Jordy Nelson was able to breakout in they're 2010 title run. Jones couldn't even beat out an old Driver for the 3rd spot given his suspect hands, if you follow and watch alot as I do you've seen this problem with him and they were talking about trading a top 42 pick for him as our #1 WR, BRILLIANT!!

The talk got even dumber for me with the mindset of another OL with a top 42 pick. We have to unfortunately bite the bullet this Yr. and wait out the 2013 draft but even then there is little cause for great enthusiasm on my part because Ireland will be directing the show. I believe though that the empty stadium will get Ross's attention this Season and Ireland at this point has to be Yr. to Yr. In any event the 4th most bloated CAP in the NFL with very marginal talent to show for it so patience in bunches in 2012 people!

he is a bust those were scrubs who will be walking the streets after 3 pm that he ran against...

And for god sakes, end the Marlon Moore & Roberto Wallace expirment! Cut them & keep them off the practice squad!

Open those spots up for other candidates. They haven't shown anything in 2 years, it's time to give someone else a chance to develop.

WHRB's,

According to Armando D Thomas is "Simply Disappointing".

Armando caught a rash crap from everywhere in lastnight's blog for that flawed Blog topic. LOL

Truth I agree we need an WR in the worst way, but I'm also banking on getting a key/top WR in FA next season. Someone better than Nanee and Ocho. Drafting playmakers high also risk a bigger bust and these players can be found at lower points in the draft (although, as we've seen, it hasn't worked out so far with Cunningham and Matthews) so grabbing 2 WR with top 2 picks may not be the smartest move, it would be avoiding other areas of need.

You think Joe Thomas brought Warfield in without the approval of Don Shula? No chance.

Donte Stallworth is working out for the dolphins. Just dont let him drive in South Beach. He will run-over someone again.

doldan13 | August 30, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Even if true his best days were in his N.O./Philly Yrs. which go back to 06 since then has been a very marginal player and never a true #1. By the way he has a lifetime suspension on his Licence and doubt Miami is the place he wants to get caught breaking that part of his plea agreement.

oscar, it was beathard.

puppy, Pouncey and Tannehill are not exactly dead meat.

We've tried drafting lineman early & pushing skill positions to later in drafts or bottom tier FA's.
How's that been workin out?
Posted by: Dan da Man | August 30, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Worked out just fine. Pouncey and Long clearly are the best 1st rd picks by Ireland.

However, just like I stated previously, more often than not you'll probably get a good olineman when drafting 1st rd. Key being "more often than not".

The problem is when Ireland wasnt drafting olinemen 1st rd. That's the true problem. Vontae's gone, and Odrick is... we really dont know for sure yet. Great thing Sherman had insight on T-hill before we made that selection or Ireland may have drafted Brady Quinn because he had forgotten Quinn wanst even in this draft.

Oscar,

Warfield was a pro Bowler before he came to Miami. Thomas would not have to have Shula's approval. What, do you think Shula would have said no to acquiring Warfield? That's too funny. LOL

Armando,

In the 46 year history of this franchise there has never been a start of a season as gloomy as this. Even with Cam Camaron there was some optimism, maybe because we were only 3 to 4 years into the darkness. We still had vivid memories of Don Shula, Dan Marino and all the winning years. But now, five years later, there is a sense of futility. A realization that not only is it the players, coaches, and GM but it goes all the way to the top. The owner is seen as a cluless
soul. I believe that we are the the Buc's of the 70's the Saints of the 80's and more recently the Lions of a few years ago. A clueless organization without direction on the verge of another dissatrous season where fans no longer care.

Philbin ia alienating the star players with his Camoron style. Losing Marshall,Vontae,Y Bell, and Chad Johnson and getting no players in return also has morale among players low. I have never seen a franchise in such disaray. Just pathetic how friggin incompetent the 3 stooges are.

Thomas bringing in Warfield was nearly the equiovalent of bringing in Jerry Rice. Had it been a pass happy league back then, Warfield would have had 1,500yds or more recieving every year.

Even when Warfield was double covered, most times he was still open. Warfield made hof on a run dominated team. Thats how great he was.

You think Joe Thomas brought Warfield in without the approval of Don Shula? No chance.

oscar canosa | August 30, 2012 at 11:53 AM

Ironically when Shula came in 1970 the team he would direct to 3 S.B. appearances was already in place as far as personnel. Shula just cracked a whip and got out of them what poor George Wilson couldn't.

btw, puppy, where do you work at?

If Philbin Finishes Fixing the O-Line this Year. Will the Fins be Drafitng O-Linemen High for the next 5 years?

Let's say he gets Jerry going and MArtin Develops? The Majestic O-Line Question will be Solved in Year 1.

So that would make O-Line, RB's and QB's set for the ForeSeeable Future. That Just Leaves any High Pick On Offense on Perimeter Players(WR's & TE).

On the Defensive side of the Ball

The D-line Needs a Playmaker, Not Depth. We Need either Somebody Oppisite Wake or a Suh-Type on the Inside. A Top 5 D-Linemen in the Draft.

The Lb's is the 1 position other than Wr that Needs Major Rebuilding. Keep Burnett and Dansby This Year, Get rid Of Misi. Keep 1 or 2 of the Backups, but sign someone this Week for Depth and Draft 1 high and a Couple Low. Major difference in between a 3-4 and 4-3 are the LB's. The Fins need Faster LB's. A Crew of them.

The Secondary is also a Question. The CB Depth? We have 3 and not 4 now. But a ShutDown Corner is not a Priority for this team Now. A Big Play Safety is. We Need a High Rd Safety. If that's 1 in the 1st, or get 2 Safety's in the 2nd. But the Safety Position Needs Ballhawks.

1st rd Safety's are Usually Top Notch Players and might make the Most difference on Our Defense. That or a Franchise DE but that would have to be a Top 5 Pick.

Oscar, you live in la la land. Morph into reality anytime lol

I'll use the analogy once more and then you guys are on your own.

Think of the Miami Dolphins as a woman who you fell in love with at a young age. Since falling in love with her she has done nothing but disappoint you, however, you feel a compulsion to continue to worship her because of the "idea" of her. She has now gone from 130 pounds to 220, has developed acne vulgaris all over her face and trunk and has seduced the 58 yeal old pool guy. Now are you required to stay with this woman because you started out with her--You know, The "Good FANatic "BS--or should you just throw up your hands and FINALLY walk out the door for good? That will not make you a bad person, it will make you a "bad FANatic" in the eyes of some morons who you would probably not associate with in real life.

It's up to you. Find another team. Commit to being loyal to that team IF they try to be a good football team. You need not be a front running phony and choose the Giants to root for, maybe choose a team that is a little down now but trying to get it back.

A lot of bloggers were pretty satisfied with this past draft. The bigger problem seems to be what has happened since. You got rid of our biggest talent at WR and haven't replaced him. That is a problem. No, Vonte Davis wasn't where he should be but he is only 24 and good CBs are real hard to find. Maybe sitting out as second string 4 or 5 games would have been more effective then trading him?? I'm more concerned about those decisions then the draft, especially if Tanny works out.

Worked out just fine. Pouncey and Long clearly are the best 1st rd picks by Ireland.

Posted by: Yesterday'sGone | August 30, 2012 at 11:57 AM

LMAO You make my point. You think it's great that we have acquired 2 high rated lineman and they have helped us win a whopping 20 of the last 48 games. WOW! What an impact!

I swear, some of you won't get it unless Richie Incognito is sittin on your faces & the lack of air is making you wake up.

This team has enough oline talent. It's time to draft skill guys. Whether Ireland is incapable or not isn't the point. We ALL know Ireland shouldn't be in charge. We all know he hasn't hit on very many picks.

HOWEVER, that is NOT an excuse to continue to same failed approach!

Jackson's sports buzz blog has a story on Miami bringing in Stallworth and looking at Gaffney.

Funny thing about the trivia question last night about the # only worn by one player in history because I'll bet a bunch got that one quick is this. In today's game Bob Griese couldn't have held a 3rd string job, I saw Griese play at the end of his career plenty before giving way to Woodley amid the boo birds at the O.B. Vs. the Baltimore Colts and he had a real duck for an arm. He was the beneficiary of a great OL and 3 headed monster at RB that left alot of open spaces in D backfields. As a matter of fact I think he owes his legend to Shula who could have easily stuck with Earl Morral for the 72 S.B.

Geesh, dude, these were all Ireland moves for various reasons. Still, Bell was clearly a liability in pass coverage, Johnson antics ahve now exceeded production(Belichick cut him), when anticipating you may have a rookie qb starting who wants to expose him to Marshall(he's a handful for vet qb's anr rarely helps put points on the scoreboard.

Now Vontae, are you kidding? Underperformer who routinely comes to camp out of shape. A 2nd and a 6th were nearly a steal. At the very least equal value. A grown man when first being informed of being traded, his first response is, "Can I call my grand mother".

Are you freaking kidding me? That confirmed the kid's 60 watt bulb only shines 30 watts bright.

That means nothing, fido, I'm 100% certain Shula would not have approved the Brandon Marshall trade.

Irescum hired a patheic HC. Shocking! lol

Yesterday has a thing for fat guys. That's why he wants them drafted highly every year.

not worried about Moore there have been a ton of drops on him. he will be all right

Shula surrounded himself only with high-character Players(Mercury Morris the exception).

Bobbd12,

I was "satisfied" with our 1st two picks, not overly thrilled. Im now warming up to Tannehill and still think Martin will get better as the season progresses on.

As for the rest of the draft, it was a total question mark for me. Not feeling Miller and Vernon to much. They werent household names while at the U. Wasnt feeling Egnew because I thought better te's may have still been available before Ireland settled on him.

After Egnew, I never even heard of the players Ireland drafted. I struggle to tell you who we drafted from 4th rd on down.

So Irescum didnt know there would would be off field problems when he acquired Marshall?? WTF? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Dashi | August 30, 2012 at 12:04 PM

Happen to agree here it's why I didn't get the OL talk in the booth last night. I think J.Jerry got a fire lit under his butt and J.Martin I'm willing to live through this Yr. based on his potential. We have back ups in A.Hicks,Garner and Murtha with this Samuda kid probably pushing someone for that 8th and final OL spot.

I want to draft best available at WR, MLB or Safety in the next draft and keep the formula with those 1st 3 picks while looking T.E. as well with one of the 3's we have. This needs to be the final Season with Dansby in the middle. I like R.Jones but would like a ballhawk if possible at F.S. the skill spots go without needing to mention.

Hard to believe but this team has gotten worse from last year. Both the Colts & Tampa Bay finished with worse records than we did & IMO are better than we are.

Imagine for a second that Bess has ANY kind of injury (minor or major) that we're left with Naanee as our top WR. Also bear in mind that both Ted Ginn & Patrick Turner would be upgrades at this point. Now factor in that Gates & Cunningham were completely wasted picks & Ireland can not deny that he has done a horrible job of finding players. We also didn't have the cap space to go after FA's like Vincent Jackson or Robert Meachem this off season but whose fault is that???

Oscar,

Shula surrounding himself with high character players only, not true. If your play "HEAVILY" outweighed your flawed character. Shula would tolerate you until the first signs of slippage in play.

For the 1972 SB, Griese was healthy but had not played since his injury back in the third Game of the Season. There was a big clamor by Fans and Media to continue to go with Earl Morrall. - Griese is my QB- Period

there is no fix with ireland and ross.lol

(so you feel them too, YG?)

Are you freaking kidding me? That confirmed the kid's 60 watt bulb only shines 30 watts bright.

Yesterday'sGone | August 30, 2012 at 12:10 PM

Yeah that was weird given he's got an older Bro in the League and all. I went back and saw the episode again and if you look closely at his face you see a child like man. I will say he at least seemed more workable (innocent) than say a thug like a Pacman Jones but neither here nor there anymore.

oscar,

Griese was injured in game 5 against San Diego. Not game 3. I think it may have beenDeacon Jone who broke his leg on a qb sack.
