« Preseason results meaningless, performances meaningful | Main | Philbin, Dolphins make the right call on Tannehill »

It's clear Tannehill should be the starter

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has been deliberate and coy about his quarterback decision this preseason. He doesn't give a lot of clues. And he has taken a systematic approach to getting the right player on the field with the first-team offense.

This week appears to be no different. Philbin wanted to name a starter for Friday's Atlanta game this week and that's very important because that player is probably going to be the starting QB in the regular-season opener against Houston.

But Philbin has tapped the brakes on the idea of making a final decision.

"We may have a decision soon, but we may not until, we may play it out another week," Philbin said. "That’s still up in the air. We certainly haven’t come to any decision on that."

Well, my question would be why not?

It is clear as day to anyone with eyes that Ryan Tannehill has so far gotten the better of Matt Moore in the quarterback competition.

Tannehill has looked better than Moore when you compare their starting assignments this preseason. Tannehill also looked better than Moore when each played with the backups this preseason.

The statistics show more definitively what we've seen on the field:

Tannehill is 25 of 44 (56.8 percent completion) for 267 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT. He has an 82.3 quarterback rating.

Moore is 12 of 27 (44.4 percent completion) for 136 yards with 0 TD and 1 INT. He has a 44.7 quarterback rating.

The competition has been closer in practice, but Tannehill has generally been as good if not better than Moore in that venue.

Beyond that, Moore has not led a TD drive yet this preseason. Tannehill has.

So what decision is there to make?

Ryan Tannehill should start against Atlanta Friday night. And he has done more to win the regular-season starting job than Moore.

How can this team make a rational decision in the QB battle when the O-Line cant block and the receivers can't catch?

This team wont win with a defense that sucks this bad.

To answer the question:
I start Moore until he goes on IR then Garrard then Tanne.
Not because Garrard or Moore can have more success but becuase I'd rather have them take the beating until Martin gets going.

Ryan, Brady, Rogers etc are successful because they have 6 seconds to throw the ball.

Matt Cassel couldnt do it when brady went out for the year, so how does tannehill get the benefit of the doubt of automatically putting the pats in the playoffs?

Brady is the patriots, as he goes , they go. I think his play has earned him that much at least!

Vegas Mike, you must not have eyes. Tannehill is already better then Henne is after 4 yerars and you could tell from day one that Beck was terrible. So unless you are blind and just listening to the games you should not say that Tannehill is the same as Henne or Beck.

guy i wanted will now start for tenn, love locker

Andrew Luck was head and shoulders above any College QB last year, including The Real Deal. I mean, for those of us that watch TV, actively.

With the right side of the O-line not yet jelling it could be rough. Here's an idea let's let Philbin make the call seems he's better qualified than this board / and or publisher. The situation is extremely dynamic and Tannehill's development and maturation needs to be where the focus is now that most of South Florida has give up after 2 playoff games.

vegas has us at 7 and the under is -165 i was there last weekend, put a grand on the under and a grand on the over for falcons at 9

Yg, Agreed.

I liked Kirk Cousins too before the Draft. If i'm not mistaken wasn't he the Smartest Qb in the Draft. Fits the Parcells mold for College Starts. Started over 3 years. Good Student, over 10,000 passing Yds. Yada, Yada, Yada

And I think he Was a Team Captain since his Freshman Year? Or was it 3 Years in a Row or Something?

An Academic All-American

Also the FanBase would've went Krazy if we Would've went LB(Which I wanted Kuechy, If we weren't getting a Qb) in the 1st rd, and then draft Cousins in the 3rd.

U think people would've wanted Irelands head now. The Qb "had" to be picked in the 1st rd. Or Else Ireland would need more bodyGuards than George Killerman walking thru Liberty City.

So,do you prefer to eat Crow or suck my Dic-? Well?

Later on? Yes.

Like I said before,

We should just shelve every talented position we have on this team until everyone gells with each other correctly becuase we dont want to hurt the guys that might amount to something in the long run, and we'll just have to wait 3-4 years until we all feel confident enough to let the kids play.

We should just not even have a draft class for this year so we can avoid future maturation problems.

How can you start Tannehill when he's been atrocious?

Sam,
Henne left as a FA and was signed in 3 hours for the same money Flynn and Garrard got.

Henne's first year as starter he went 7-6. His top reciever was Ted Ginn. Ricky & Ronnie rushed for 600 yds each. He beat the Jets twice on MNF that season and beat NE throwing more than 50 times.

Maybe Tanne has the better career.
BFD.
Maybe Tanne suffers 2 concussions and his career is over.
We'll add it all up when both are finished playing and see who had the better career.

That was a good bet, connors. If I was a Football betting man I would have taken it, immediately.

I think John Beck had more college experience than Tannehill and he started only 4 pro games.

Those 4 games destroyed his career. Left him shell shocked. Whether he didn't have the mental toughness or he didn't have the game. Who knows?

Shocking to me that people would want to risk subjecting Tannehill to the same fate.

Yikes.

Or you can get over it, post like an adult & drop the scarcastic bit. Any of those 3 would do.

People don't agree with you. Suck it up!

Stu,
How can you not be considered a moron after that statement?????
You answer that and I'll answer You.

Tannehill looks like John Beck did in preseason.

Tannehill was horrble against the 1st stringers of Carolina. He even said so himself. GEEZ!

And if you had something relevant to add, I wouldnt need to be.

You have to be very careful when you weed out veterans on the Team. Some of them might not be busts at all but simply unsatisfied(and not exactly about $). You Win, they'll be very happy, whatever.

Posted by: Stu | August 20, 2012 at 03:04 PM

And matt moore was what exactly???,

this team is bad but you sound like tanny should've tossed 4 TD'S while in fact tanny didnt play well, to call him atrocious compared to what we have on offense is just borderline retarded.

Tannehill looks like John Beck did in preseason.

Posted by: Dashi | August 20, 2012 at 03:00 PM

That's a bit much, don't you think? But, I don't think this team is all that far ahead of that 1-15 team. Tannehill would be working with a very similar lack of talent.

Marino didn't even start as a rookie & had an accomplished college career that involved alot of games. Tannehill isn't accomplished or experienced, yet to some here, it would be a crime if he didn't start the season.

Who cares what you think the timetable should be, Mando? You write as if the coaching staff has some sort of obligation to make your life less complicated. Get back to what you do best, which is servicing the needs of the pervs at the Herald who hired you. Chop chop.

cash ricky had over 1100 yards that year, not 600.

Tannehill looks to me like another Ireland bust. Chad Henne 2.0

Jim Langer complained that Shula was "inhuman", but only after he got his 2 SB rings.heheheh

Laughing at the fans here who think preseason is a gauge for ofensive game planning. It isn't. I guess I will trust the architect of the Packers offense the last few years over horrible beat writers and arm chair alcoholics.

If we had a shutdown defense we could just run most of the time (think Jets and B'more).

If our QB had 6 seconds to throw then we could outscore our opponents regardless of the defense (think Pats and Pack).

If we could play some good D and some good O we could compete with teams like the Giants and Philly and Cowboys.

But if we can't stop anyone on D we'll be playing from behind all the time, we'll to throw the ball to catch up which means we need time to throw for the QB and WRs that get seperation.

In other words we're screwed.
If the best thing we have is that, "...well at least Hennes gone...", then we're screwed.

marino didnt start cause he was on a team that could win with a qb that had gone to a super bowl 2 years earlier. this team is a 3 win team no matter what qb u start so u let the rookie start so he gets some exp for next year when moore and garrard are long gone

Posted by: Jay | August 20, 2012 at 03:11 PM

after two fu%$ing games??? the guy still has yet to throw a pick, and is trying to learn a system of offense that he's familiar with little to no talent to work with and he's now a BUST...*lol*..

Dude, seriously, go become a wets fan, you seem to have the patients for it..*lmao*

John Beck came into his first game in '07, and instantly got clobbered, fumbled, and the rest is history. He was around 6-6'1" and TINY compared to Tannehill. RT was able-bodied enough to play WR (with a 6'4" frame).

Do you people actually THINK about the posts you write, or just go off-the-cuff, stream-of-consciousness like?

This guy knows the offense better than any other QB on the team. Is the MOST DURABLE of any QB on the team. And oh, by the way, did I mention he was the #8 pick in the Draft (3rd QB of which the 2, SMALLER men before him are going to start on their own crappy teams)?

RT starts, there wouldn't even be a discussion unless Garrard was healthy.

And if you had something relevant to add, I wouldnt need to be.

Posted by: SayWhatCheck | August 20, 2012 at 03:04 PM

The relevance went right over your head. You're too busy trying to be sarcastic to those who disagree with you.

You come off as a baby. Do you resort to this tactic everytime someone disagrees with you?

People disagree, deal with it. Instead of pouting via sarcastic blabber, grow up & get over it.

Matt Moore is the team MVP. He singlehandedly turned the team around last year. You cant compare Tannehill to Moore after just 3 quarters of below mediocre play against backups in preseason.

Nothing productive to do today except to Teach those beat writers and arm chair alcoholics which is which.

DOLPHINS JST NAMED TANNE STARTER

Also, I'll take Bob Griese's opinion of any one on this blog ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!!! Griese said "Miami finally got it right with this pick," and "he looks like the real deal."

Yeah, maybe your fat *sses know more about what it takes to be a good NFL QB THEN a former good NFL QB, and also maybe if your uncle had teets he'd be your aunt.

thill looks solid for a rookie, love his confidence. we found our qb, now lets work on the other 21 holes to fill

"over" anyone on this blog (is what I meant).

John beck is the Mormon version of Brandon Weeden.

Stu is u know who.

Notice how he only leaves them corny remarks with nothing to back it up.

Don't worry people u know ur right and he's wrong when he goes on a tangent with his 1001 aliases.

Notice how he only leaves Moore is the best qb on the team, without nothing to back that claim.

Sad thing is why play both sides of the argument? Dang, are u that senile? Come on OC ur better than that. Notice how even ur initial stand for "On Kock"

And please stop getting mad when I walk away to do other things. No reason to imitate the greatness that is Dashi.

dc griese told us his son was great

moore sucks, hes a backup gone after season, why mess with playing him

there goes dc again. spouting off as usual.

in case you weren't aware dc, youre 1 of the dumbest bloggers here. please stop rpetending to know more or be more intellectual. we all know differently.

Some fans are as excited about Tannehill as they were about Pat White and Chad Henne.

dc griese told us his son was great

EXACTLY! DC & Griese know more than everyone else.

Wow, another non-relevant comment made by you poster??
Any Chance you can change your screenname to Mr- Irrelevant, Pretty Please???

nobody was ever excited about awful pat white. but yes i remember the idiots in here who kept defending garbage henne. guy was so bad. told u fools he would hold a clipboard for rest of career

This team is void of talent on every single level except special teams, (Fields and Carpenter). The defensive line is overrated and garbage they cant get any pressue on opposing QB's. As usual Ireland is to blame for the lack of playmakers we have.

Odrick sucks he's a tweener, not big enough to be a DT and not quick enough to be a DE, he cant get around the RT. SMH we should of suck for luck when we had the chance, No! Instead Ireland let Sparano wins some games instead of starting Devlin.

The Dolphins’ quarterback competition is over — Ryan Tannehill will start Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin made the announcement at his daily press conference, reading a statement before taking questions.
“We feel like this is the best decision for our football team,” Philbin said.
The writing was seemingly on the wall earlier in the day, during which Tannehill took all the work with the starters, while Matt Moore ran the scout team. David Garrard, the other quarterback in the mix, will not be back from knee surgery for the next few weeks.
.yeah.

Awwwwww, look. More whining!

How's this name suit you?

even carpenter sucks

bill,
Looks like you were right about Henne after all. I remember when you said, "Henne is so bad someone needs to pay him $3.5mil/yr to hold the clipboard".

I can Do that too *lmao*

Yup. Just read about it, Tannehill starting. Many inferences that can be drawn from that fact. But we'll let them rest. We'll see..

Okay. Tannehill is the starter. Now who he is going to throw to???

bill conners,

Sad must agree, our best player is Brandon Fields LOL

The best thing about this season is the Jets hired Sparano as a offensive cooordinator. BWHAHAHAHAHA

Yep, It's Settled.

T-$izzle is the Starter For Week 1.

Ur Running out of stuff to talk about monkey boy. Dashi Does Know All. U can Call Me "The Infinite All-Mighty Great" from now on. Or Dashi For Short

Well I guess Something else Ur going to have to talk about.

T-Hill is the Starter Devlin is The Back Up, Beyotch
