Vontae Davis traded for multiple draft picks

The Dolphins have traded Vontae Davis for two 2013 draft picks, the team has confirmed.

One pick is believed to be a second-rounder while the other is believed to be a low-round selection, probably a conditional sixth rounder.

The trading of Vontae Davis today signals the Dolphins are in full rebuild mode.

They have a rookie head coach.

They are trading away current talent for future talent.

They are going with a rookie quarterback -- granted a first-round pick, but a rookie nonetheless.

They are, so far, showing no interest in adding a veteran wide receiver -- having passed on the idea of signing Braylon Edwards when he was available. (Terrell Owens is available now after he was cut by Seattle today.)

Back to Davis, general manager Jeff Ireland released a statement on the trade that failed to explain why the team is taking this step:

"We appreciate all the contributions Vontae has made to the Dolphins since we drafted him in 2009 and we want to wish him the best of success in Indianapolis," Ireland said.

I suppose one can argue the Dolphins are getting good value in that they now have two second round picks slated for 2013. Except the Dolphins haven't exactly hit home runs with their second round picks in recent years.

Phillip Merling was a second-round pick. Chad Henne was a second-round pick. Pat White was a second-round pick. Koa Misi was a second round pick. Daniel Thomas was a second-round pick. Most are gone. None are stars.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson, meanwhile, is pleased with his move.

“Bottom line with this move today is we got better as a football team,” Grigson said. “That is always the goal each day for this organization. From the first time he stepped on the field at Illinois as a freshman or in the National Football League as a rookie, you knew Vontae was a special talent. Now he has a chance under Coach (Chuck) Pagano and this coaching staff to reach not only his potential as a football player, but as a person as well. That is our collective goal moving forward.”

Ahhhh biscuits

Ireland doesn't say anything because he doesn't know Foortball, look at Dolphins record since this Legend in his Own Mind has been with Miami...

Miami needs a real GM

Can we trade Ireland for a 6th round pick?

*sigh* if i were a gambling man I'd bet the under 7.5 wins in a heart beat. I might actually do it just so I can get quick cash.

What team was he traded too? The Dolphins have been on rebuilding mode for over 20 years!

I hate rebuilding.. Why cant we get great players? I remember the days when we had a great defense.... That interior defensive line of Daryl Gardener and Tim Bowens, and Zach Thomas being a tacklin machine.. Sigh those were the good ole days.

We don't know anything. Was this decision by Ireland, Philbin, Coyle, all three?

Reporters these days are lazy. They print a headline but don't do much investigating to explain the news. It's all about an eye catching headline. Content? Screw that.

Hey! Wait a MINUTE!

We used a 1st round pick on a guy that came in and gave us 3 picks year(on average/9 for his career).

Then we get a 2nd and a conditional 6th?

I'd say that's a smashing success. Seriously, think about that. Who wants to use a 1st round pick on a CB that only gets 3 picks a year? That averages out to a pick every 5 games or so.

It doesn't erase the fact that Ireland missed on his Alpha CB to begin with. But I'd say he recouped the loss.

Come on, don't let emotions and pre conceived(erroneous ideas)confuse the issue. Averaging a pick every 5 or 6 games.

Let that Punk go get Drunk with Irsay. He's ya'll's problem now!

Provided Ireland doesn't "Bundle" the picks for another Egnew or Garner.......I'm starting to like it real quick.

One caveat of course......JUST SAY NO to Nolan Carroll!

Coalition To Get Coalition Out Of The Closet,

It's time to do your duties now. Get on with them.

MiamiD20 only an idiot makes a bet that can't pay off before two months and calls it "quick cash". lol

We just got another 2nd to go with two 3rd round draft picks. We just got rid of arguably our best cover corner.

And still, all you can think of is me?

Love you Too Sweet Cheeks, but MAN -O- MAN, get a life-Bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

So they trade our best corner for a 2nd and 6th? now we go from having a strong position at a crucial position to thin.. You can't have too many good corners.. Both Brandon Marshall and Vontae could be pro bowlers this year and we got 2 3rds and a 2nd for these guys. Even if they don't fit personality wise into Philbins system you don't throw out talent.. Seriously, this move makes no sense.

I only post under Odin-PERIOD!

Rebuilding? Vontae was just drafted 3 years ago! He's not some old veteran at the end of his career! Plus, we traded him to the Colts, who are also rebuilding. So what's the deal? Is Philbin getting rid of everyone with a potty mouth? I had high hopes, but Fins continue to be a joke.

None of you know why he was traded. None of you know who were for it on the team. Let's just suppose the coaches were behind it 100%, well then they must have had good reason.

We may have the highest character team in the NFL. Do they have playoffs for that?

You can trade for all the draft picks you want but if you have a guy who picks acorns after acorns what's the point? This team isn't going anywhere! When does the Heat season kick off?

this is awful news

Armando - do you think if you wrote an article about Ireland kicking rocks they would keep you out of the press room? We really need this out there right now.

I like that Ireland is getting rid of all Parcel's mistakes.
We want football players. A second for Davis is damn good value too.

poor Armando was kept out of the loop and now he is crying

ANOTHER LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG SEASON..YOU GUYS WANT IRELAND GONE THAN HURT ROSSES POCKETS..DON'T GO TO THE GAME.

Any true Dolphin fan should fully support Jeff Ireland. All of Jeff Ireland's picks that didn't work out are completely the fault of Bill Parcells.

The trading of Vontae Davis today signals the Dolphins are in full rebuild mode.

Mando,

You think???

BTW--Easy on bashing Thomas who is going into his 2nd season. The guy had hamstring problems but played well when he was on the field. This a big year for Misi & I haven't given up on him yet either.

good move by Dolphins but "must" back it up with quality choices with the picks

Seriously...Getting rid of guys like Vontae, Marshall, & Chad are a blessing. The problem I have is that we shouldn't have drafted, traded for, & signed them in the firs place.

How come New England always seems to end up with a million draft picks without trading away anyone worth a crap? I'd say the best trade we could make is offering Jeff Ireland a blank check for their GM.

Bub,

Agreed. We now have some additional fire power for next year's draft but it only means something if the picks pan out.

Ireland HAS to be a Jets mole.

Full re-build mode again. awesome.

WHY DIDN'T THEY TRADE VONTAE IN THE OFFSEASON..DURING THE DRAFT? VONTAE IS LAZY BUT HE WAS ARE BEST OPEN FIELD TACKLER AND THATS WHAT WE'RE GONNA MISS..AND HE'S 24!

I like it. next draft we have a #1, two #2's, two #3's. That will give Philbin a chance to put his stamp on the team.

I can not wait for owner Stephen Ross to fire Jeff Ireland and release a similar statement thanking him for his contributions. The contributions will be to other teams such as the Chicago Bears (Marshall) and the Colts (V.Davis).

odin, please do the blog a favor & go play in oncoming traffic.

Something changed since Friday nights game.

As Mando so astutely pointed out last week, If the Dolphins were planning on trading Davis, he wouldn't have been playing in the game for obvious reasons.

So what changed? Our receivers and tight ends proved they can't catch a cold?

We have enough ammo now, trade a pick to Green Bay and get us a legitimate Receiver for God's Sake.

PS: Armando just figured out we are in full blown re-build mode? ROTFLMFAO!

THEY WAITED SO WE CAN BUY SEASON TICKETS AND THINK THAT THEY AREN'T REBUILDING..SO THE TICKETS WERE SOLD AND NOW THEY ARE REBUILDING!

Odin must be an idiot. Only 3 picks a year? Hello! He's the only one who gets picks. Marshall got ate up all night Friday. Ireland sucks! Gave him more picks to screw up...

I like it. next draft we have a #1, two #2's, two #3's. That will give Philbin a chance to put his stamp on the team.

Posted by: Sherp | August 26, 2012 at 03:33 PM

Philbin isn't drafting players, Ireland is. Have you looked at his 2nd & 3rd round track record?

You may want to rethink your assessment. In actuality, what just happened is we got rid of a decent CB & will likely get a practice squad player in return.

Promichael,

Marshall & Vontae have been nothing but failures as human beings. The Bears & Colts can have them.

He's so stoopid. If he would just come clean and post with us under one name.....

And so why don't you do the same?

If we can use some of our additional picks to use as trade bait for James Jones or Mike Wallace, this will be a great move!! Hopefully Ireland is a good Chess player and sees 3 moves ahead..

I'll bet Peter King gets the low down for his Monday column. The Florida reporters are too lazy to dig in and find out what happened.

WHY DIDN'T THEY TRADE VONTAE IN THE OFFSEASON..DURING THE DRAFT? VONTAE IS LAZY BUT HE WAS ARE BEST OPEN FIELD TACKLER AND THATS WHAT WE'RE GONNA MISS..AND HE'S 24!

Sorry guy, Marshall is a way better tackler than Vontae will ever be. He's as good in coverage too. You're jasded because you've been rooting for this perpetual underacheiver for 3 years.

Marshall had a rough game Friday, but the week before he was freaking awesome. He's fitting into a new team and system as well. He'll make us all forget about the drunkie Baby sooner rather than later.

Why is it every out of state reporter has better inside contacts with the fins than the local writers?

Obviously Ireland wouldn't have agreed to these trades, which clearly make the team worse in the short run, unless he felt his job was safe this season. Personally I don't mind this trade but hated the BM trade. As another poster basically said, Marshall's worst is better than our best receiver's best.

We could have five #2's next year and it wouldn't mean a thing if you can't evaluate and develop talent.

How many draft picks from the last 5 years are starting? What is the organization's hit percentage on draft picks?

If they wanted to get rid of Davis they'd be better off trading for an establish player at a position of need like WR rather than rolling the dice with a less than 10% chance of winning in the draft. Ireland sucks.

Terrible trade...Davis was a first round pick 3 years ago...And we trade him for a 2nd and a 6th...So now we get to face Brady with Sean Smith, Richard Marshall, Nolan Carroll and whoever else we have at the CB position.. This is going to be a VERY LONG season...And how does this give us more breathing room under the cap?? Hard to understand how this front office thinks...

So can that six rounder get higher if vontae kills it for indy? Im surprised miami didnt contact pitt about vontae. They need corners and davis is physical and played in a 3-4 defense.

Ireland is just getting rid of the retards. Marshall, Davis and Johnson were all developmentally disabled.

Hartline still not practicing. I don't see how he can make this team

I have a feeling that Gates in going to stick. I think it will be Bess, Naanee, Moore, Gates, Wallace & hopefully we find another option from another team's cuts.

I'm OK with a rebuild attempt. It gives me hope. Overpaying for questionable quality vets because we keep thinking we're close.......is getting us no where. Build through the draft and play the rooks.

BTW I'm guessing Ireland turns that 2nd into a WR, maybe Wallace? Our ticket buying fan base will never accept a team that doesn't at least look like it might win a game or two.

Our secondary was a major weakness...Just like our WRs...And yet we trade our best CB...I guess management has already given up on this season...

#1, the value isn't the issue. I explained it earlier.

He was a late 1st, 25th I think. We'll probably have the 2nd or 3rd pick in the 2nd round. This is a difference of about 9-10 spots.

When you're into that part of the draft, the talent levels are about equal. Considering he played for 3 years & are only losing about 10 spots, thats quite fair. And we get a useless 6th rounder too.

The problem is, we cut a decent guy @ a position of need & have no viable plan to replace him. ireland has a bad history with 2nd round picks so basically, we traded him for nothing.

Brady is probably licking his chops for our 1st game.

"Obviously Ireland wouldn't have agreed to these trades, which clearly make the team worse in the short run, unless he felt his job was safe this season. Personally I don't mind this trade but hated the BM trade. As another poster basically said, Marshall's worst is better than our best receiver's best."

Chris,

Great point about Ireland. Apparently he's the Teflon GM.

The Miami Dolphins break 91 year old NFL record! The Dolphins are the first team ever to be mathematically eliminated from post season play during the pre-season.

Odin must be an idiot. Only 3 picks a year? Hello! He's the only one who gets picks. Marshall got ate up all night Friday. Ireland sucks! Gave him more picks to screw up...

I think you're just misunderstanding. Let me put it in terms you recognize.

Out of all your Buddies, you're the best cork sucker of the bunch.

But what good are you if you only suck 3 corks a year?

Come on now? You know you're buddies would get rid of you in a heart beat. They'd bring in somebody that's not quite the Cork sucker you are, but their not afraid to get in there and get their knees dirty.

Lookit everybody, "J" thinks he's a Diva when it comes to cork sucking. ROTFLMAO!

You got a rude awakening coming "J". I bet you don't make it past the Red Ropes next time you show up at the Rainbow Room.

ireland is stupid. what were his credentials? he never played the game, just kissed parcells' ass enough to get the job. despite his personality issues, he was clearly the best cb the dolphins have. btw, bill polian was singing davis' praises after attending a dolphins practice. i am sure he communicated this to irsay, and i trust polian's opinion more than irelands.

MIKE WALLACE is coming to MIAMI..
