Vontae Davis traded for multiple draft picks

The Dolphins have traded Vontae Davis for two 2013 draft picks, the team has confirmed.

One pick is believed to be a second-rounder while the other is believed to be a low-round selection, probably a conditional sixth rounder.

The trading of Vontae Davis today signals the Dolphins are in full rebuild mode.

They have a rookie head coach.

They are trading away current talent for future talent.

They are going with a rookie quarterback -- granted a first-round pick, but a rookie nonetheless.

They are, so far, showing no interest in adding a veteran wide receiver -- having passed on the idea of signing Braylon Edwards when he was available. (Terrell Owens is available now after he was cut by Seattle today.)

Back to Davis, general manager Jeff Ireland released a statement on the trade that failed to explain why the team is taking this step:

"We appreciate all the contributions Vontae has made to the Dolphins since we drafted him in 2009 and we want to wish him the best of success in Indianapolis," Ireland said.

I suppose one can argue the Dolphins are getting good value in that they now have two second round picks slated for 2013. Except the Dolphins haven't exactly hit home runs with their second round picks in recent years.

Phillip Merling was a second-round pick. Chad Henne was a second-round pick. Pat White was a second-round pick. Koa Misi was a second round pick. Daniel Thomas was a second-round pick. Most are gone. None are stars.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson, meanwhile, is pleased with his move.

“Bottom line with this move today is we got better as a football team,” Grigson said. “That is always the goal each day for this organization. From the first time he stepped on the field at Illinois as a freshman or in the National Football League as a rookie, you knew Vontae was a special talent. Now he has a chance under Coach (Chuck) Pagano and this coaching staff to reach not only his potential as a football player, but as a person as well. That is our collective goal moving forward.”

I really do feel as if this will be the worst dolphins team we have seen. Even worse than the 1-15 team.

Because of the soft schedule we may get a couple of wins but talent wise, it's gonna be ugly.

I don't see how this team won't be the worst in the NFL this coming season.

I think it's a good trade. Vontae was beaten out by Marshall. Vontae was continuing his immature ways. Philbin wanted none of it. Don't put this on Ireland, it looks like a team decision and a good decision for the future. The Colts will do nothing this year so that 2nd round pick should be very high. Vontae has his head up his butt.

fact is he got beat out by marshall for the starting spot, so to get a 2nd (will be a high 2nd) plus a 6th is a great deal

He sucks and only gets 3 picks a year, but lets keep him because..........what? Because he sucks?

I know how much you like guys that suck. But Philbin ain't having it. You sucky Diva's take notes. You better produce or else.

"The Miami Dolphins break 91 year old NFL record! The Dolphins are the first team ever to be mathematically eliminated from post season play during the pre-season."

I miss Don,

It's absolutely true. We just gave the rest of our division automatic wins when they play us.

Odin, I know you get this alot but, you're annoying.

The blog can live without your juvenile copy n paste routine. It isn't necessary to copy n paste & then dissect every one of your blog trolls comments to you.

You'd be here for days. Well, since you're a loser with no life n nothing to do, I can see why you do it.

Truth...The way I look at it, anytime you trade a first round pick of only 3 years ago, regardless where it was in the round, that means you failed...I will say this...If Miami wins more than 6 games, Philbin should get some votes for coach of the year...Because talent wise, he's got very little of it...That's for darn sure...

Someone pls tell me what the deal is with 7-11...are they hiding him? WTF is the deal? Why don't they target him in games? Why all the hoopla?

Ireland had his chance to rebuild 4 years ago and failed misreably. How can he be allowed to rebuild for a second time when his first was a complete failure. I don't blame Ireland, I blame Ross for not recognizing that he has no eye for talent. He has a 4 year record of not finding any players.

Ireland put Sparano in a position to fail. Everyone complained about Sparano but what could he do with the talent that Ireland gave him. Fans expected Sparano to take Miami to the playoffs but he was given no talent to work with. Players played hard for him but he simply did not have the weapons needed to take it to the next level.

Hey mther fookers I knew this would happen before it happened. You all wish you knew 10% of football I know, you punks!!!!!

Posted by: FABuloso | August 26, 2012 at 03:54 PM

There is no hoopla. He got 10 seconds of fame on hard Knocks. He's a nobody. You shouldn't believe everything you see on a tv documentary.

Les brown was on alot too & he was cut yesterday. None of the WRs on this team are worth a dime except Bess.

So can that six rounder get higher if vontae kills it for indy? Im surprised miami didnt contact pitt about vontae. They need corners and davis is physical and played in a 3-4 defense.
Posted by: Sammo | August 26, 2012 at 03:44 PM

Pitt supposedly wants a 1st for Wallace. We can now counter with a 2nd and maybe a conditional pick.

I'm telling you, we played Davis Friday, so we weren't actively shopping him. Then after our receivers lay a big goose egg, suddenly Davis is gone.

The only thing that changed was how much more obvious it's become that we need receiver help. Watch and see if don't land Wallace, Jones or another receiver that can come in and help Tannehill develop.

Out of all your Buddies, you're the best cork sucker of the bunch.

But what good are you if you only suck 3 corks a year?

Come on now? You know you're buddies would get rid of you in a heart beat. They'd bring in somebody that's not quite the Cork sucker you are, but their not afraid to get in there and get their knees dirty.

Lookit everybody, "J" thinks he's a Diva when it comes to cork sucking. ROTFLMAO!

I bet you don't make it past the Red Ropes next time you show up at the Rainbow Room.

I ask you all yet again, does a single day go by where odin doesn't litter the blog with homosexual or meth comments? I mean, a single day? One single day ever? Nope.

Jimmy Johnson always said that the greatest enemy of great is being good. Now the Dolphins are the old Detroit Lions and we need to take advantage of the high draft picks. Jimmy built a dynasty in Dallas through the Hershel Walker trade and because he was able to draft high for a couple of years when the Cowboys were really bad. Ross needs to fire Ireland before next year's draft so that we can start rebuilding with a competent GM.

For everyone upset with this trade think about this, if Vontae cared as much about the Dolphins as us the fans, then he would not report out of shape, be a problem at practice (i.e. too many bathroom breaks), come to practice late with hang-over. I have been a Dolphin fan since 1970 and want players who want the Dolphins to win as much as I do. Give me an average talented player who gives 110% over a perceived star who only gives 50% anyday. Our championship Dolphin teams were filled with average players that gave 110% for the Dolphins and Shula.

The only thing that changed was how much more obvious it's become that we need receiver help.

What doesn't change is your useless posts that no one cares about.

Hit the bricks turd brain!

These trolls are funny.

They whine and cry all week about our cap situation. They go on and on about how Jeffy cap strapped us and we don't have talent.

Then we get a 2nd and a conditional 6th for an over-hyped/under-acheiveing CB that averages 3 picks year.

So how do they respond?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa - Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Just stick your favorite pacifier in that money maker, rub a little vagisil where it hurts and MOSTLY - STFU!

ROTFLMAO!

VD shows up last year over weight, out of shape and unprepared. Had to be helped off the field on multiple occasions due to cramps and being an out of shape starting NFL CB. Is prepapred to actually play games about mid way through the season. This year new coaches, new schemes and the dude comes in over weight, out of shape and unprepared...AGAIN!?

The good news is we got a high draft pick for him next year. The bad news is, who plays nickel? We could possibly have some really high picks next year.

Don't buy tickets!!! Don't support this crazy organization.

Stop the whining, ladies. If our armed forces sat around on the eve of battle and wrung their hands like some of you nancies, we'd be a banana republic. Have some hope. Talent is only part of the equation for winning. GO PHINS!!!!!!!

ireland is stupid. what were his credentials? he never played the game, just kissed parcells' ass enough to get the job. despite his personality issues, he was clearly the best cb the dolphins have. btw, bill polian was singing davis' praises after attending a dolphins practice. i am sure he communicated this to irsay, and i trust polian's opinion more than irelands.

Posted by: austin | August 26, 2012 at 03:50 PM

Ireland di play. He was a kicker known for making the tough kicks and missing the easy ones.

How'd you do in your collegiate football career?

RICHARD MARSHALL WAS EXPOSED BY JULIO JONES!! Vontae came out and shut him down, AYONE CAN BE GOOD COVERING LEGEDU NANNEE IN PRACTICE, VONTAE TURNS THE LIGHTS ON IN THE GAME!!!

The same folks for the past 10 years are always defending the Dolphins and say the same cliched crap.

Odin, why are you awake? Have you embraced sobriety?

David was always overrated, good tackle coming up from the safety spot but always running after receivers and getting beat. Good riddance.

Odin, I know you get this alot but, you're annoying.

You know what's funny? Not you! But, I digress.

At least your dysfunctional brain has come to realize it's not 1 troll but, plural.

Take a bow idiot, YOU EARNED IT!

yet another example where Ireland uses a High pick to get somebody then trades them away for a lower pick. BRILLIANT!! Then those lower picks are garbage. Double BRILLIANT!!

Everyone on here is so full of crap..I am not an Ireland fan at all..but everyone last season was complaining and ripping Marshall for all the drops and attitude. Ripping Davis that he could not cover. Now there both gone and everyone is complaining that we traded them. I agree Ireland had no plan to replace Marshall..figured young WR would come thru. Vonte never lived up to hype. This team was not going anywhere even with both on team..so hope there is a new GM next season to put the picks to good use.

odin, you're falling behind. There are too many troll comments for you to keep up.

TAKE THE HINT & LEAVE

..Seriously. Is this team really any worse without Vontae Davis? Tom Brady would have been licking his chops even if Vonate was out there..How many wins does this take away from us now that he is gone? 0...

..I said this on the previous blog(not that anyone should care) Philbin get a pass here as far as how he wants to sculpt this team. He is a rookie coach trying to set an example of how and who he wants to make his program or vision of the team run..He can get away with cutting, or recommending trades of veterans who may be more talented the remanats of the roster in the name of the greater good. Philbin can be Reggie Hammond and do these things becuase he is too green to be questioned..It is his team.Get with the program or be gone..

We will see if these moves continue in the future should he have success. Or if he hangs on to these questionable personalites if he struggles down the road.

a 2nd rd pick for a lazy bum is big

this is huge for us, now have 2-2nd rd picks and 2-3rd rd picks plus we should get first pick in draft and could trade that for even more.

From Armando's blog Friday night:

Vontae Davis is scheduled to play so you can now totally discount the idea he's going to be traded in the next day or so.

Ok Armando...good info!

These trolls are funny.

---------------------------------------------------

I ask you all, is there ONE SINGLE day that goes by where Odin isn't trolled and impostored by a Bone Puffing, Meth Pipe Sucking Pedo?

Ah........Nuff Said, eh?

A 2nd rounder for an average CB with poor work ethics, that's great.
If only we could get rid of Ireland between now and the next draft, I would be very happy

A blog without Odin.

Rejoice Dolphins' fans as we are closer to seeing the departure of Jeff Ireland as clearly Joe Philbin's power continues to grow. I would not be surprised if Mr. Ross has met or meets with Philbin to discuss Jeff Ireland.

Dean, I don't like the trade, but Vonte was far from our best corner, in fact he wasn't starting.

You idiots that knock the Fins (Jimmy “I love acquiring criminals” Johnson) for getting rid of
prima-donna’s are so darn blind, it’s sad. Dolphins now have five picks in the first three rounds next year. Sounds like the Pats…I know the Pats are great but this is how they got great aside from the Brady pick in the 6th. You want Marshall???? he is a nut and did not play well for Miami!! You want Johnson, big mouth who head butts his wife???? You want Davis??? The tail does not wag the dog!!! Ireland has had one year…Tuna was calling the shots before that…Stop kidding yourselves.

I agree they need a #1 receiver…may not happen until next year…Wannstedt, Spielman, Saban and CAM-CAMset this team back way before Ireland. C'mon!

Odin = the Prototype for building the perfect idiot

This has to be part of another trade...I hope.

Jeff Ireland, acting the role of Stephen Ross's "lap dog" is an asset stripper!

Joe Philbin has a high school football resume and will be exposed as a clown

Philbin wants his players, and if this team turns into the green Bay Packers of the AFC 3 years from now I will be more than ecstatic with all of these moves

no way mike, just keep building draft picks, best way to build for future. this is a great trade. go fins!

The only thing that changed was how much more obvious it's become that we need receiver help.

Gee, if anybody was interested in Dansby's Cup Size, you'd be a pretty popular Twinkie around here.

But....their not........and you're not. So please, go away. Nobody wants to hear about Glady peeing on the supermarket floor or your Gay Reverands getting rub downs.

You did it to yourself, so why are you taking it out on me?

Pathetic Pedo......BE GONE - RPTFLMAO! You bore everyone and drag the place down.
--------------------------------------------

Finally, can you please STFU or make JUST ONE Football related post ONCE in awhile?

Sen,,,,,,what. Davis wasn't even in the game. Nolan Carroll was out there covering him after Marshall. Did you watch the game.

smart move, ireland is wisely trading the value he got with his first round pick invested in davis(a stand up double) into a homerun by using THAT pick to upgrade a unit in more of need. enter MIKE WALLACE. yes, the bottom line is that first round pick now becomes a bonified hit, a stud reciever with NO baggage, no guess work, no rookie learning curve, THAT is the way to use a top pick! mando, you were so good at making the point that miami has zero value to show for all those 2nd round picks, now the point MUST to be made NOT to use that pick(aquired from the davis trade) in next years draft, but to use it wisely on a sure thing, avoid another 2nd round bust in the draft, and turn that pick that was vontae davis into mike wallace....

Current trade offer:

Odin to the sentinel blog for 1 pylon & a box of moth balls.

The idiot post not mine. That's another Mike.

The Big O didn't like this pick from the beginning and was criticized by Joe Rose, Maddog, and Jimmy for his opinion. If the Big O was our GM this team would be in alot better shape! Please say goodbye to Jeff Ireland!

Odinturd, we know you're a homophobe.

Here's a homework assignment for you. Try to make 1 post without a reference to another mans junk or homosexuality.

YOU ARE SO DARNED BORING!

Stop bringing Brady into the conversation. Some fans are such idiots that cant even remember the last 3 years when the Patriots killed us through the air with no name WRs...And were was Davis while he did it?

Current trade offer:

Odin to the sentinel blog for 1 pylon & a box of moth balls.

Golly Gee, you've been going on and on about there being two of you. VBut yet ROUTINELY bust yourself forgetting to change your sign in name.

Yep, you're fooling everybody-Bhwaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaa!!!!

A dead give away on lack of intelligence? You NEVER LEARN-ROTFLMFAO!

We HAVE RB's

The problem that you do not seem to grasp by stating that Vontae and Marshall are nothing but "human failures", is that any decent GM does not give up a player of their team value without having a replacement. Now if Ireland has it worked out that he can get a receiver like James Jones from GreenBay with those draft picks received from the Colts. Then I stand corrected on my comments.

id deal dansby now

Next on the chopping block...Smith...if he doesn't get his act together....

I was AGAINST the trading of Marshall...

I HATED the cutting of Johnson....

I LOVE the trading Davis....

Not because I have anything against Davis....but to me...this SHOWS consistency by the FO....and if there is ONE thing players respond too...its consistency.....

Here's to Philbin....the NEW Belicheck of the AFC EAST....

mike, no offense, you have a right to your opinion just like anybody else, but why such a hard on for Ireland? His draft picks have been average at best, free agents he acquired have been nothing special...Our team has very little talent but yet we're in a salary cap mess...Why all the love?? He hasn't proven s**t since he became the GM...
