The Dolphins have traded Vontae Davis for two 2013 draft picks, the team has confirmed.
One pick is believed to be a second-rounder while the other is believed to be a low-round selection, probably a conditional sixth rounder.
The trading of Vontae Davis today signals the Dolphins are in full rebuild mode.
They have a rookie head coach.
They are trading away current talent for future talent.
They are going with a rookie quarterback -- granted a first-round pick, but a rookie nonetheless.
They are, so far, showing no interest in adding a veteran wide receiver -- having passed on the idea of signing Braylon Edwards when he was available. (Terrell Owens is available now after he was cut by Seattle today.)
Back to Davis, general manager Jeff Ireland released a statement on the trade that failed to explain why the team is taking this step:
"We appreciate all the contributions Vontae has made to the Dolphins since we drafted him in 2009 and we want to wish him the best of success in Indianapolis," Ireland said.
I suppose one can argue the Dolphins are getting good value in that they now have two second round picks slated for 2013. Except the Dolphins haven't exactly hit home runs with their second round picks in recent years.
Phillip Merling was a second-round pick. Chad Henne was a second-round pick. Pat White was a second-round pick. Koa Misi was a second round pick. Daniel Thomas was a second-round pick. Most are gone. None are stars.
Colts GM Ryan Grigson, meanwhile, is pleased with his move.
“Bottom line with this move today is we got better as a football team,” Grigson said. “That is always the goal each day for this organization. From the first time he stepped on the field at Illinois as a freshman or in the National Football League as a rookie, you knew Vontae was a special talent. Now he has a chance under Coach (Chuck) Pagano and this coaching staff to reach not only his potential as a football player, but as a person as well. That is our collective goal moving forward.”

I really miss Joe Robbie.

Colts will be 10-6. They have plenty of talent. Great QB and receivers.

yg why would smith work hard then if being lazy gets him our of this mess? lol
Posted by: bill connors | August 26, 2012 at 05:12 PM
Vonte played right up to the UNDERACHIEVER LABEL he came out of college with. He had that huge question mark about him entering the draft. He only came to Miami and proved the underachiever label was true.
Good Riddance for that illiterate sounding Gumby!!!!!!!!!

colts 10-6, hilarious
Posted by: bill connors | August 26, 2012 at 05:13 PM
Chris,
Let me clarify. He acquires depth type players and they are supposed to be our starters and playmakers. No talent and still no cap space.....is that better?
Posted by: jrljr2 | August 26, 2012 at 05:14 PM
Bill Connors,
Luck is labeled perhaps the most pro ready rookie qb to ever entered the nfl. He isnt Brady, Breeze, Rodgers, Peyton, or even Eli just yet. So how the hell do you figure the Colts go 10-6 this year?
8-8 would be near miracle. The Colts still need a lot more players to surround Luck with. The Colts arent close to a finished product. Neither is Andrew Luck.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | August 26, 2012 at 05:17 PM
Bill Connors,
My bad, I see Monte was the one making the Colts 10-6 post. LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | August 26, 2012 at 05:18 PM
I wouldnt be a bit surprised if the Colts went deep into the playoffs. Luck has that refuse to lose attitude. He has his TE from Stanford, Reggie Wayne, and a great rookie RB. Dwight Freeney is still performing at a very high level and they've added Vontae. Dont be confused by last season. The Colts are all the way back.
Posted by: Monte | August 26, 2012 at 05:18 PM
We will be lavishing in cap space at the end of the season. Obviously we're sitting this season out, but next year? Watch out for FA's and draft picks galore. The more I look at this the more i see us set up for success in the future.
Posted by: MiamiD20 | August 26, 2012 at 05:20 PM
Since now we clearly seem to be a team in rebuilding. Mr Ireland please dump Fasano before the season begins too. Im sure you cant get even a 7th rd pick for him.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | August 26, 2012 at 05:20 PM
Trading your best DB is a terrible call. Miami has an awful secondary. Probably worst in the league. Smith sucks. Both safeties suck. Davis was usually good. This is a terrible call especially since we have to suffer through this yr to roll the dice on an unproven player. I am getting tired of my team not trying to win. I'm ok with losing but damn it. At least effing try.

Manning covered up so many shortcomings for Indy it isn't even funny.
Luck will help, but not enough. The 2nd rounder we got for Davis' will be the 42nd pick in a worse case scenario.
With a little Luck or alot of Luck....or with plain old Luck, the pick could esily be as high as the 33rd to 38th range.
I just hope they ink this deal before Irsay sobers up ;)

Monte,
Stanford was better than the 2011 Colts. Luck couldnt win a national championship with them. Hold on.... he could even win a bowl with them.
So what the hell makes you think he'll take a team that was 1-15 or whatever last year deep into the playoffs? Geesh! LOL
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | August 26, 2012 at 05:22 PM
Sean Smith is much better than Vontae and more mature, reliable, and consistent. If Marshall was going to keep the starting job then Vontae was locked into playing ST and nickel corner. Nolan Carroll better play well as backup boundary corner because Vontae was great at that spot. We went from the best trio in football to a big question mark but is a backup corner worth the headache in the long run

Odin,
Exactly what I posted. Davis was a 27th pick in the 1st rd. A 27th pick is only a glorified 2nd rd pick.
So now we most likely get one of the first 10 picks of the 2nd rd, plus we get an unamed pick later. Yes Ireland blew the pick with Vonte, but no sense in allowing his underachieving blackass to hang around and continue to do what he has has continued to dop.

YG, watch the Colts. We'll talk after the season. Maybe a surprise to some but no surprise to me. They have a ton of talent. And they bagged last season on purpose. My pick for the biggest record improvement ever.
Posted by: Monte | August 26, 2012 at 05:28 PM
Great, we got a 2nd Rd pick, and the Colts got an overweight, alcoholic CB. How the hell do you supposedly run gassers all offseason, but you're on the sidlines saying you're gonna "act" like you're in shape...GTFOH!
Posted by: Fin'FanSince4Ever | August 26, 2012 at 05:28 PM
I think maybe Jimmy Wilson comes in to play nickle now.
I can't see Carroll beating him out at any position.
Wilson's skillset is well suited for the nickle.

if our recievers aren't going to catch it then go to plan B. what is plan B?.. B is for BRADY, as in, simply DON'T throw it to them(recievers). don't make their liability become a tannehill failure. the pats throw it to welker, then to hernendez, then to welker, then to gruntkouski, then back to welker, then to woodhead. simple.. so plan B is, throw to bess(welker), throw to clay(hernendez), throw to bess again, throw to reggie(danny woodhead ha ha-just kidding), and then maybe to egnew(gruntkouski). we need to base our offense around the guys we can count on(bess, clay, reggie)and build from there. it seems that the best spent time would be on developing egnew into the beast he can be and as soon as possible, the reward would be huge, he is BIG, we all know he can catch, put him on the fast track as he has the potential to be the best tight-end in the league, and implement plan B. ross perot once said"if you don't have a good plan, copy someone else's" a wise man this ross perot... and maybe ireland is wisely going to swap the talent he recieved for that 2nd round pick in vontae for a homerun in mike wallace. that would more then make up for some of those 2nd round busts. that's the way to use a top pick, DON'T gamble in next years draft on another pat white, or so many other previous busts, use it on a sure thing, a wideout stud with NO baggage, make plan B tannehills career saving moment, use it now, why else would you weaken an already thin secondary, by taking the closest thing we have to a shut down corner, the answer.. for a more pressing need at reciever. i can't see ireland trading davis NOW, for another gamble in next years draft, go after the sure thing...MIKE WALLACE....go get him ROSS...!!!...!!!

Monte,
Colts didnt bag the se4ason, they were just that horrible. Especially at the qb position.
Have you been paying attention? At least 8-9 of the players that won sb rngs with Manning got jettisomed this offseason. Exactly what real talent are you talking about?
They still have the 2 de's(Freeney/Mathis) and brought in Luck. After that where's the "REAL" talent besides a few unproven rookies and few leftover old vets that are clearly on the downside of thier careers.?
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | August 26, 2012 at 05:35 PM
If we are in full rebuild mode then why not dump Jake Long? While he's still a great left tackle but how many wins does he actually equate to and he will be past his prime by the time the Dolphins are relevant again in hopefully 2 to 3 years. Seems like the picks and salary cap space would be more valuable.

ALoco,
If we continu the fire sale that began with Brandon Marshall, now Vontae. I see us finishing 6-10 again tops.
That's good because we do need much more good talent on this team. But could be bad because Ireland gets to choose that talent.

bk,
Long's going nowhere! Solia's young and blossoming, fit well with a rebuild plan. Bush's skillset translates well to the west coast offense. Dansby's contract is far bigger than his impact. No one would take Dansby with his present contract.
You need a new list of possible players that could be traded my man. LOL

Seems odd we are in full rebuild NOW with a GM that has never rebuilt a team......ever!
I repeat my previous challenge to Jeff "Tea Bagger" Ireland. If you can get a pee wee team into the pee wee superbowl, then I might believe you even know how to SPELL football.
Posted by: JackSparrow | August 26, 2012 at 05:48 PM
the more i think about the patriots, the more i realize how smart they are...really. i mean, they throw it to the guys who are going to catch it, it is that simple. i guess that's what it means by "simplifying the offense". and it makes total sense. don't worry about all those other recievers, just throw it to the guys who will catch it...BESS, CLAY, REGGIE, the percentages DON'T lie, we will get positive yards on almost every play, and that's exactly what the pat's do--next we have to build from there, and by that i mean spend all coaching resources into developing EGNEW into the next gruntkouski, he has the physical skill set to be the top tight-end in the entire league, it IS worth it, what a weopon, we already know he can catch, and he is the missing piece of plan B. the passing game is NOT working so go to plan B. B is for brady-- throw it to your highly dependable targets(welker, hernendez, woodhead, gruntkouski) ----translated-----(bess, clay, reggie, egnew) and to do one better, sign MIKE WALLACE using that 2nd rounder we just got for vontae, and all of a sudden we look more then competitive.. go fins..

Why signal rebuild TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE START OF THE SEASON?
David is getting cut next.
I told y'all David is not hurt. David was told he would never start. Then he was told he would be cut.
Posted by: JackSparrow | August 26, 2012 at 05:49 PM
This means our secondary along with our wr core will be the worst in football. Gonna be painful to watch. Wasted money again this year on NFL direct ticket to watch the Fins get curb stomped.
