Why Brian Hartline return is great news (PLUS) practice and cuts update

Brian Hartline will return to practice as early as today and, barring a setback, will practice all of next week as the Dolphins prepare for the start of the regular season against Houston.

This is huge news for the team.

I know, I know, you think I overstate. You think I embellish.

But to those of you focused on what receivers the Dolphins might trade for, or what waiver wire discards they might claim, or the guys they worked out on Thursday, consider the following:

In adding Hartline, who has been out the entire preseason with a calf injury, the Dolphins are adding a player that is better or almost as good as any player the Dolphins have been linked to recently.

That's right, Hartline is as big an addition as Donte Stallworth, Anthony Armstrong, Mike Sims-Walker, James Jones, and Jabar Gaffney.

Consider the stats over the past two seasons:

Hartline: 78 receptions ... 1,164 yards ... 14.9 avg. ... 2 TD.

Stallworth: 24 receptions ... 391 yards ... 16.2 avg. ... 2 TD.

Jones: 88 receptions ... 1,314 yards ... 14.9 avg. ... 12 TD.

Gaffney: 133 receptions ... 1,822 yards ... 13.6 avg. ... 7 TD.

Armstrong: 51 receptions ... 974 yards ... 19.0 avg. ... 5 TD.

I know what you're thinking. Hartline isn't in the same class as either James Jones nor Jabar Gaffney. I understand your point.

But understand that unlike James Jones, Hartline has been playing in a prehistoric offense the past couple of years and has not been the beneficiary of Aaron Rodgers at quarterback and someone like JerMichael Finley at tight end.

Also understand that the Dolphins would have to trade for Jones and he would not know the offense right away. Hartline is on campus and knows the offense so he can contribute right away and I've been told he might even be a starter if he has a great practice week next week.

Gaffney?

He's on Miami's radar. They would like to add him. But the truth is he's currently injured and I was told by a good source that Gaffney's preference is to return to New England once he's healthy. If they don't want him, then he would look around to other teams. I believe they will take him back.

If something gets in the way of that and Gaffney comes to Miami, he would have to learn the offense. Would he be an upgrade? Absolutely. But it should not diminish Hartline that he's been more of a deep threat than Gaffney the past couple of years.

Mike Sims-Walker has not posted the kind of stats Hartline has recently and there's a reason he's been cut by multiple teams now. Stallworth obviously isn't the same guy he was before his tragic auto accident in which he ran over and killed a man crossing the road leading to Miami Beach several years ago.

Armstrong?

He's good. But is he heatlhy? He's battled injuries the past 12 months, including this training camp. So he's right there with Hartline on that. He's a burner and can get over the top of the defense. But the Dolphins still have to finalize a trade for him. Yes, Armstrong would be a help. But that doesn't mean Hartline is lessened.

Indeed, we should not diminish the importance of Hartline's return. If he can stay healthy, it definitely helps.

And now heeeere's the plus coverage:

The Dolphins released the following list of cuts, most already reported by The Herald  -- Vince Agnew, Will Barker, Ryan Baker, Cameron Collins, BJ Cunningham, Rey Feinga, Clyde Gates, Shelly Lyons, Quinten Lawrence, Lydon Murtha, Roberto Wallace, and Jamaal Westerman. The team says Gary Guyton's contract was terminated.

Ryan Cook is not on this list but he was traded to Dallas for a 7th-round pick. The trade is not official until he passes the Dallas physical.

The Herald previously reported OL Chandler Burden and WR Jeff Fuller were cut but they were at practice today. Barring an unexpected change, they are scheduled to be cut and both will likely be re-signed to the practice squad if they clear waivers.

The Dolphins will continue to make cuts and other moves through tonight's 9 pm deadline and then tomorrow and again Sunday. So nothing will really be settled for several days.

Not practicing today were John Jerry, Lake Long and Jason Trusnik.

So let me get this straight were going to trade for A.Armstrong who we let go and that's somehow a good thing?? We missed on everybody from J.Fisher to M.Flynn in the off-season but managed to sign a 3/4 DE/OLB in J.Westerman who we cut today?? Yeah! I know Flynn lost out to R.Wilson in Seattle, not the point! Our H.C. is Ireland's yes man to the tenth degree but that's O.K. as well because after all Jeff is learning on the job and we will someday reap the benefits of the reward, huhh??

We have a glorified RT for a T.E. and passed on maybe 2 future H.O.F.'s or in the least 3 Pro Bowl players at the position in order to hold out and draft Egnew in 2012?? It blows my mind that I still debate whether keeping J.Ireland on is good or bad for the team on this blog! The guy was talking on HARDKNOCKS about his coup in trading V.Davis for a 2nd and conditional 6th to Indy after we invested a #1 on him with C.Matthews still on the boards and nobody really sure what Wake was yet, I'm I

I cut myself off but ment to say IF I was still missing something??

Well all I can see in the trash heap is Marvin Mcnutt. He is better than any receiver we have outside of Bess. The Ravens decided to stash Tommy Streeter of IR. Well, we could go for Deion Branch; with Bess and Hartliine, we will be OK; and we are ok in the runningback and qb department. Maybe we can find 2 suitable cbs in the trash heap.

To Plax or not to Plax.... That was the question!!!!

Jones had 7 TDs last year because he had the QB with the highest QBR in the history of the game throwing to him. Stokely was a stud when Manning was his QB then went to Denver and disappeared. Jones would do the same here and would be a waste of a 2nd in my opinion. Besides we have a Jones in Brian Hartline, and he's FREE.

Absolutely great news! He's sure handed!!

Coalition...

I love Bess...and everything he brings to the table...so I am not gonna down bess to make my point...

instead I will make my point like this...

Philbin said he thought we were practicing well prior to the Cowboys game...so he was surprised by how bad the team looked....

Being the NEW GUY...he doesn't know that we have been reading for YEARS how good the FINS have looked in practice......how STOUT our D was (in practice)..there is a reason for this....

our players are mediocre or less...so they ALL look stellar practicing against other mediocre talent...games seem to bring out a different story....

To Plax or not to Plax... That was the question!!!!!!

I don't know if anyone else has seen the giants pre season game but that kid douglas who was released has great hands and can return as well. would be nice to bring him in for a look see.

Jones would do the same here and would be a waste of a 2nd in my opinion. Besides we have a Jones in Brian Hartline, and he's FREE.

As true as your argument might be, what do you mean by "a waste of a 2nd"?

If you meant a 2nd rounder, don't worry. Jones won't be bringing GB any premium picks. I would imagine he could be had for a 4th, maybe a 4th and a 6th at most.

Of course thats me IMAGINING, cause I don't know diddley-lol........

Marshall, OchoStinko, Plexico, T.O., Vontae Davis, Stallworth are all MORONS, CANCERS in LOCKER ROOM, CRIMINALS, EX-CRIMINALS and/OR MALCONTNETS one way or another.

In other words, don;t have the 'make-up' that Philbin ans staff requires. Guys like Bess and to a lesser extent Rishard Matthews do - they got in trouble when younger and don;t take things for granted.

Don't like -- don't watch

As the late great Jim Mandich used to say. None of the names on that list makes my toes tingle.
That incompetent loser Ireland couldn't get laid in a whorehouse with a fist full of hundreds.

fin4life, i spent 4 training camps watching the demise of this org. i started blogging here about impending doom 3 years ago with ireland as the GM. last year he also got rid of everyone he had invested in. the man has no idea of how to "build a team". he can only sign acorns. players cant relate to him and coaches cant trust him.

"Panthers acquired S Colin Jones from the 49ers.
A sixth-round pick last season, Jones proved to be a valuable special teamer for the 49ers as a rookie, notching six tackles in 13 games. He'll serve the same role in Carolina."

I've mentioned this before about Carolina when they traded for Olsen & also when they traded for Louis Murphy. If you factor in these three personnel moves on the Dolphins we'd have a legitimate stud @ TE, a WR that would be our 3rd best behind Bess & Hartline, & now a young Safety that has played on the best defense in the NFL this year.

This is the difference between having a GM that knows how to add pieces to a team & build around a young QB & a GM who does not know how to improve our roster.

Steven Ross and Jeff Ireland are the AXIS of EVIL in Miami sports and were is the genius of LA VERDAD's Dawn Aponte who is supposed to be some sort of CAPOLOGIST GENIUS but permitted the mess at hand with our bloated CAP! I have been trying to warm up to Philbin but must be honest here, I hate the way he can't look guys in the face feel he has the same respect with the players that a boss may have with an employee given how disconnected he is and can we find a H.C. who can speak in coherent sentences without stumbling all over his words, geez!!!!!!!!!!

Ireland talks as if he were fixing something with all these trades but facts are facts he drafted Vontae passing on Matthews. He held the deck to have the 2 headed monster he prefered at T.E. It could have been Gronk with Graham or Graham with Hernandez ect... But no fears because they will get Egnew right, throwing up in my mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy is clueless I live in Miami and can tell you the happiest guy in town is Marlins President David Sampson who is no longer the most hated and even then Sampson knows he's not liked! Ireland lives in LA LA LAND and thinks it's all good, that the gimmick which is HARDKNOCKS wasn't seen for what it was a SHAM! I will give him this the blame isn't on his feet it's on S.Ross and some have the B ALLS to compare Wayne with this guy at least Wayne always got his man!!!

I believe Chris is correct.

Now, get rid of Dansby the festering, fat, slow, underachieving whiner. Get a 2nd or even a 3rd. But, who's gonna pay him his 8 mil contract?

greg,

Welcome to the club, I believe nobody on here will argue that I've been yelling it for 2 Yrs. now!!!!!!!!

Well Kris, I'm not going to down anyone either to make a point.

Though I will ask a hypothetical........

Bess garnered alot of praise and respect around the NFL........with Henne(mainly)throwing him the ball.

Before I drew any hard conclusions, or go for the internet equivalent of a Fist Fight over the matter, I'd have to see Bess play with Brady for two or three seasons.

The Hypothetical: How much different would your opinion be on Bess had he been catching Brady passes instead of Henne's?

-Odin- ;)

Bring back Camillario to save us from an 0-16.

I am going to watch badminton tourney's on Sunday this year.

Hoyers gone in New England.

Oh well.....no more "Mallet can't even beat out the backup" arguments!

Mallet is now a Full Fledged Backup - Whoop-WHOOOOP!!!!

...I would hope that the Phins would not offer more then a late round pick for a guy like James Jones...Think about the offense he played in, and then thik about how his play would translate here..

Of course I don't know this as fact..But look at the personel in Green Bay..Then look at the personel here. How many times was Jones the first option, even the second? Probably not too many times. How many times when opposing coordinators drafted the game plan did it read" Stop James Jones first?" The guy could play pressure free with little to no threat of having defenses playing funky coverages to stop this jugernaught.

Would he be the best reciever on this team if he showed up? I don't know if that would be accurate. He may do fine with this group. And if the cost is something that doesnt include rounds 3,2,1 By all means make the move. Anything in that area would be Green Bay Stealing our milk money..We are desperate for help..Not that desperate.

Dansby= overrated heffar!!

Hartline is a pretty good WR but how encouraged can you honestly be since he missed the entire off-season, he's not in football shape, & who is injury prone.

Even Jerry Rice says that it's going to take Mike Wallace 4 or 5 games before he gets in football shape & learns the their new offense. And I think we all know Hartline is no Wallace who can just blow the top off of the defense at any time so I wouldn't expect much from Hartline until he rounds into shape.

Coalition....

good points....you hit me with the indefensible(s)....those are....

defend Henne as a QB (not gonna happen)....sorry poizen....

attempt to down grade Brady as a QB (not gonna happen)....

In the voice of Chester Chetah....."Well played sir".......

The Patty's cut Branch, might as well work him out

It's incredible Ireland was at the 09 Sr. Bowl and had a 1st hand look with Sparano nuts at the North team but felt like, "You know I feel Sean Smith in the 2nd, John Jerry in the 3rd and AJ Edds in the 4th are all better than Gronkowski, Graham and Hernandez at a position of need, yeah and keep asking me to trust this guy who I heard on NFL Net. is shopping M.Moore for a nugget even after the Pats cut Hoyer as their back up for nothing. This is beyond a joke at this point we pick up Westerman who is a 3/4 DE/OLB and draft another in Vernon, clueless!!! seeping VENOM!!!!!!!!!!

..I am happy that WR. Matthews made the team..I think he was the best reciever on this team not named Bess this preseason..

Still bummed that Wallace couldn't get it figured out.

Hoyers gone in New England.

Somewhere, Craig M's gas bag is deflated.

Trading for Mallett in 2 years just got a whole lot harder...maybe he is a FA by then...

About 1,000,000,000,000,000 to 1 the one player whose career is getting wasted on this mess. If Welker were still a Fin he may have been killed on some 4 yard pattern over the middle by now instead of having H.O.F. talk associated with his name today, although the butterfingers in the S.B. hurt when you consider C.Carter ain't in!

Yeah Hartline with his 2 TDs in three years is a real stud. Especially considering he was drafted after another stud in Patrick Turner. If Fireland had half a brain he'd sit on the floor and play with it.

Kris, sorry, had some stuff tot ake care of but hte last guy off the top of my head to re-sign with the Dolphins after they cut him and he played better elsewhere - at least at WR was Tony Martin. That wan't a disaster of a move.

I don't see this possible one as a team maker either. Just a why the heck not kind of a move. I would take almost anyone over Nannee right about now.

...I would hope that the Phins would not offer more then a late round pick for a guy like James Jones...Think about the offense he played in, and then thik about how his play would translate here..

Darryl Dunphy | August 31, 2012 at 03:59 PM

It wouldn't translate go back and watch the tape on the 2010 S.B. run it was his inability to be the #2 guy which vaulted a S.T. player in J.Nelson to STAR status. It goes back further if you watch or saw the 09 W.C. with the Cards. He has game breaking speed but his hands are suspect, is the reason that Vick and the Eagles had a shot at the end in the 2010 W.C. game and don't forget the monumental drop Vs. Chicago to end that Season. He is a great athlete but one of those who for some reason chokes when he can shine!

Trading for Mallett in 2 years just got a whole lot harder...maybe he is a FA by then...
Posted by: Kris | August 31, 2012 at 04:09 PM

Not this fantasy again....there's a reason teams passed on him in not only the first round but the second as well. Drug problems don't scare teams away or else half the players in the league drafted in the first two rounds would have dropped because of drug use or addiction

"Anything in that area would be Green Bay Stealing our milk money..We are desperate for help..Not that desperate."

Daryl,

I don't know if James Jones is the guy I would target & I probably wouldn't give up more than 4th BUT to say that we're not THAT desperate is incorrect b/c this team is starving for help. Ireland needs to do something at this point. If he doesn't add a WR or two & address the secondary Philbin, Sherman, Tannehill, Bush, Long, etc. should all just beat the sh#t out of him for trashing the season. I understand the trades of Marshall & Vontae but you can't just ignore the holes that those trades have created. Unless Ireland has a lifetime contract he must add talent to those positions today not next year when Ross cleans house unless he has a lifetime contract. It's obvious that he didn't upgrade either position the draft so now he's forced himself into making a trade.

I would trust Philbin on this b/c he knows him a lot better than we do. Just like I trusted Sherman's opinion on Tannehill. I've seen Jones play & he's not the most sure handed WR in the league. Jones is at best is GB's 3rd top WR behind Greg Jennings who I think is outstanding & Jordy Nelson who is clearly an emerging talent.

Mark,

Anthony Armstrong = Marlon Moore 2.0

He would not start ahead of HeyHey Nannee.

Why bother with the trade? Both stink.

Mark...

Craig M...kinda made this make sense to me with one of his post....Slaton probably isn't gonna see the field anyway...

but Armstrong is not talked about favorably in the DC area....and i'm not excited about him.....

Wouldn't James know the offense considering Philbin was his OC?

I wouldn't be shopping Mat Moore(LOL-did I just type that?)just yet. Not because of his play this pre season either.

It's just that Garrard's pool-side injury was oddly reminiscient of Pennington's last one.

Not going to knock Garrard, but when you get to be his age, you just never know what's going to happen next. I mean, who saw Penningtons laste injury coming........(wait, scratch that. We all saw that coming). But you get the point?

I still have reservations about Devlin too. He outplayed my expectations and appears to be a pleasant surprise. But still, way too inexperienced for me.

I would hang onto Moore until we get a thourough prognosis on Garrard.

"...it took me a long time to accumulate this speed and I'm not going to let it go..." - Tony Soprano when discussing Clyde gates and Roberto Wallace.

Wee Devlin? He's 5'8". Not an NFL QB.

Odin, I would trade Matt Moore in a second. Not becuase I think he's horrible but because he would ruin our draft standing. He's already shown over 5 years that he can't beat a good team but will beat the bad ones. Who needs that? If Tannehill gets injured (knock on wood he doesn't) I want our version of Curtis Painter going out there. Tank Indy style Baby!!!

I guess I'm the big elephant in the room today but will call it like I see it given I'm not going to switch my team after more than 30 yrs.!

Matt Flynn 11-13 last night. Hmmm.

Henne lit it up too........it's the 4th pre season game.

I guess, Hmmmmmm......is about as good as it's going to get.

Henne is a good QB. Search Dolphins pump video on youtube.

Who is back-up Tackle on this team???? What a f#cking mess...I actually feel really badly for the players & the coaches. I didn't feel badly for Sparano b/c the he was incompetent too.

Doesn't the owner see that Ireland can't get ANYTHING right??? I could've sworn that I heard Ross say that he wanted to make money from this team but that he understood that the product on the field needed to be good. I just can't understand why anyone in their right mind would pay money to see a Dolphins game at this point.

For what exactly? Matt Barkely?? We should have tossed everybody overboard after the Tebow loss!! I won't lie at that point I wanted to SUCK FOR LUCK and the (GROWN) kid ain't disappointing in the least. Our seeming ability to be irrelevant while being mediocre enough to be draft relevant is killing me!

"The Dolphins have reportedly received multiple phone calls from teams looking to trade for QB Matt Moore.
With David Garrard (knee) nearing a return, GM Jeff Ireland would probably love to get a draft pick for Moore. Keep an eye on Denver, as the Broncos have a desperate need for a veteran backup to Peyton Manning. Offensive coordinator Mike McCoy worked with Moore in Carolina."

He's a QB which is the most valuable position in professional sports so get a DAMN PLAYER not another useless draft pick.

I think Matt Flynn is better then any of the QB's on our roster. But Ross was too cheap to pay him fairly.

Yesterday I prayed for the release of Gates, Murtha, Wallace & Marlon Moore. 1 more to go.

..We Have Rb's...I said that we are not that desperate for a reciever with the idea Jones would cost us a second or third round pick..I did say that a 4th round pick or anything above that would be fine..

Thinking about it over the last few minutes..I'm in agreement with you..We are in desperation mode. Probably the wrong satement on my part. Knowing what we do about Jones..Would he be worth a 3rd round pick if he were coming out this year..Probably. Pretty decent production from him if he were(In fact I think he was a 3rd rounder)..Ideally we want some depreciation for other teams assets..So trading him for the value of where they selected him seems like a bad one for us..Sighting our issue at the position. does this go out the window?

I'm sceptical of how Jones would contribute on a team that is so shallow at the position..Would his flaws be exposed because the talent level at the other spots is what it is? Would the fact that we have a rookie that may not be able to deliver the ball like an Aaron Rodgers be a factor? How would he fair here? If indeed we need help this bad, and Philbin(like you said he would know) believes Jones could be an immediete upgrade..Then even a third round pick would be alright....

I think.

Who is back-up Tackle on this team????

Posted by: We Have RB's | August 31, 2012 at 04:36 PM

I'm no Lydon Murtha fan, but it is perplexing, eh?

We're paper thin at OLB. Misi is terrible in coverage. Burnett seems to always be nursing injuries.

So we keep Trusnik and Spitler. Then cut Gary Guyton, whose played at a high level both inside and out.

(I mixed a drink and tuned in for today festivities. I should have made my drink STRONGER. Alot STRONGER!)

"....We should have tossed everybody overboard after the Tebow loss!! I won't lie at that point I wanted to SUCK FOR LUCK and the (GROWN) kid ain't disappointing in the least. Our seeming ability to be irrelevant while being mediocre enough to be draft relevant is killing me!"

Fin4Life,

Yep. It's killing me too. After being a fan of the Dolphins for as long as I have I could never root for another team but until Ireland is gone this team will continue to have more holes to fill than wins.

It's gonna be ugly but, imagine if a starter goes down for a considerbale amount of time.

Trusnick? Spitler? Who the hell are the back up olineman now? Who are the 4th & 5th Db's?

God Help us.

Drafting wr's instead of Miller or Egnew, looks like a really interesting missed opportunity. However, drafting wr's after the 2nd rd isnt a given he will have an instant 1st yr impact anyway.

Thus, we're left with plan B, upgrade the position as much as possible and if healthy Hartline will help. Armstrong can help if he can get and stay a healthy.

Other than these things, our absolute best recourse, wont be available until next season. Via draft or free agency.
