Defense didn't exactly plug the leaks

HOUSTON -- One of the more intriguing things coming out of Sunday's 30-10 loss to Houston was that the home team really didn't play that well and still won by 20 points. Obviously the Dolphins turnovers had a huge part in that, but can you imagine if Houston had been firing on all the proverbial cylinders under its proverbial hood?

As I mentioned in my column in Monday's newspaper, some of the defensive players after the game were talking as if the unit had played fairly well. And yes, there were instances, particularly early on, when the defense was up to the challenge of stopping Houston.

But what I heard suggested good work throughout.

“It’s the same old same old for me. We got a lot of tough guys, a lot of guys that can make plays all over the field," Cameron Wake said of the unit. "We know what we can do day in, and day out. We go at it in practice. I’ve seen what these guys can do. You just gotta go out there and execute and do our best to get the ball."

Wake and his teammates had their chances to be heroes when they were put in crisis situations after four consecutive Miami series ended in turnovers before halftime.

"That’s football," Wake said. "That’s the way the cards are dealt and you’ve gotta play your hand. As a defense, we’ve gotta go out there, regardless of where the ball is. They throw the ball in, and it’s on the one that’s an opportunity for us to keep them out, that’s an opportunity for us to get a turnover, an opportunity for us to do a lot of different things. That’s the mindset you’ve gotta have. You can’t go out there, ‘Oh man, they’re on the one yard line, what are we gonna do?’ We’re gonna stop them. That’s the way we go into each game."

Um, except that didn't happen. The offense gave the ball up four times on turnovers and four times the Texans offense converted points against Miami's D. Three of those times the Texans got the ball at their 46, Miami's 27, and Miami's 31 ... and converted touchdowns each time.

So what's this about 'we're gonna stop them?"

Yes, the Miami offense put the defense in a terrible hole. But the defense didn't exactly dig itself out. Those are simply the facts.

bill connors,

The nfl.com article says the same people that leaked Sparano would fired are leaking Ireland's on the way out. Theyre saying Ross will accept nothing less than a winning record this year.

Well, we all know that aint happening! BYE-BYE IRESCUM!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's funny, is many here will be thrilled when we're 1-1 next week. Defending Ireland, saying everything will be ok. People saying we're ready to compete.

It takes a while to develop chemistry. Doesn't happen right away. Not sure what a winning Season means to Ireland's job. Still doesn't prove we shouldn't be further ahead at this point (at least in accumulating talent).

DC....I agree...great T.O....in the 4th quarter...

But what about the one in the 2nd quarter...after Tanne had thrown his 2nd pick in a row....and there was just over 3 mins on the clock...Houston had the ball....

I thought that was a horrible T.O....the last thing Tanne needed was to go back on the feild and run a 2 min offence...not being a rook...and just throwing 2 st8 picks....

well...then end result....his thrid pick before the half...and a the nail in the coffin for the game....

I hate to accenuate the negative...but I felt that was a Philbin Blunder...he should have protected his QB....and went into the locker room down by 2 scores...

Dashi heard Ireland will be fired this week.

Its a shame after 5yrs of supposed rebuiling we still look like an "expansion team". Goodbye Irescum!!!!!

YG, we traded Brandon Marshall then
Ireland uses that pick for Egnew. He must be fired!

Ross may as well fire Irescum now. The talent on this team isnt getting any better between now and the end of the season.

Short Arming Could be from the Pressure?

A Qb would usually short arm a throw when they try to fit the Ball in a Tight Window Fast. Marino got Away with It because that is how he threw all the time. And His dancing in the Pocket and Shoulder shake is Unmatched in NFL History!

Marino was Micheal Jackson in the Pocket.

It happens in Baseball When an Out fielder or Infielder Clearly Misses his Target.

The Elbow Drops Below the Shoulder!

Short-Arm! Like If T-sizzles right arm is a Foot Shorter than his Left?

Ireland didn't check his Arm Lengths, Like He didn't check Matt Moore's Hands.

MATT MOORE CAN'T EAT A WHOOPER. HE PLAYS BASKETBALL WITH A WNBA BALL. AND PRACTICES WITH MINI-FOOTBALLS!!
-------------------------------------------------------

rg3000 is really 6' ft. Let him cut that afro and then Measure him again.

Also, If we get the 1st Pick maybe we can trade the pick to the Bills. For the 2nd Overall and a Couple 1st. Let them Pick the 2nd Rder(Barkley) from USC and We take 1 of their Wr's 2nd overall.

But Still FIRE IRELAND!!!!!!!

Also DC...

Now that I think about it....I don't know if there is...such a thing as a "great T.O"....when the score is 30-10....I can't really think of a scenario were there pharse applies under that score...

Kris, yes, maybe being too aggressive, but I just appreciate being aggressive. Plus, this year, the way I look at it, is everything is a learning lesson for Tannehill. Put him in every position you can, let him learn from everything.

It's like my cousin's parenting method. They talk to their youngsters like an adult (I mean, no baby voice, they explain things instead of just say something silly). And their kids are brilliant, and extremely mature for their age.

I think we're doing the same with Tannehill. He's a rookie, but the game plan is the game plan. The HC's strategy is what it is, no matter how young the QB. Sure, probably isn't "playing to win" in the short-term, but might be really helpful in the long-term.

I'm out for awhile, enjoy!!

Is it a surprize that a rookie qb needs to work on something? Yes he needs to work on looking off defenders and his o-linemen need to throw an elbow in the d-linemans groin when he decides to jump. That'll keep his hands down. Its a work in progress and I know everyone wants to win and win now but getting on here and screaming T-Hill sucks, Philbin isnt a good head coach and whatever else is just useless. Im just a passionate about the team as alot of you are but its gets old after awhile of seeing the same things posted over and over. If you want Jeff Ireland fired get Ross's attention like the group that wanted to bring Manning in. Thats be proactive, not sitting at work typing that he should be fired blah blah blah. Besides Philbin has shown that he has alot to do with personel desicions now. He cut and got rid of alot of the "acrons" Ireland picked up. Give Philbin a chance to do what he seems to be doing and getting his guys in to play under his system. I know some of you are going to say he didnt even call plays in Gbay but if you look at the playoff game they lost to the Giants last year when Philbin was out most of that week they were installing their Offensive game plan and how the O performed on Sunday then you can tell the impact he had. If Aaron Rogers and the rest of the guys on that Super Bowl WINNING team will vouch for him etc then thats good enough for me against someone sitting at work that hasnt even shook hands with the man saying he is not good enough to be a head coach. Theres my two cents do with it what you will..

DC,

Just checked in for a minute. Good luck with RGIII. The kid does look all that, weak NO defence or not. I'm not disputing this kid will be good, I just don't see any possibility we could have gooten him (outside of being 3-13 last year).

I wonder what's up with Gaffney? Is he hurt? I noticed the Raiders worked him out also but signed somebody else. I wonder if we might see him signed this week now that contracts aren't guaranteed.

and before I get the grammer police after me I reread what i posted and saw the errors. please make due

Good points DC...something to think about....

On Hard Knocks, our OC told Egnew "egghead", "If I were the gm, I would cut you today".

Tony Sparano must be feeling great after watching that and even greater about reports on nfl.com Ireland could be fired before season's end. Im sure he's feeling a sense of vindication. Although he could be slightly responsible for some of the horrible talent here too. LOL

One last comment guys and then I gotta go. I know guys are crictizing Tannehill's throwing motion but that to me isn't the problem. If you watched the game yesterday you'd see Shaub has a similar throwing motion. The difference? He's adjusted to life in the NFL and gives himself the time and space to throw. This can be corrected for Tannehill. Philip Rivers has even more of a pronounced 'shoulder' throw but again he's adjusted. This was the kids first game against a real defence. I'm confident that between Sherman, Philbin and Tannehill this can be corrected.

Oakland 27 Dolphins 6

By the way, did the Brandon Weedon fan club sleep in this morning or are they still licking their wounds? I'd think they have as good a chance for Matt Barkley next year as we do. I know they played the Eagles tough but Weedon looked AWFUL!

How did Vontae look yesterday?

Smoked all game!!!!

If you want to correct Tannehill's tipped passes just bench him and play Moore.

Tannyhhill's a bust, a derelict, another Irescum misatake. Build him up if you wish. He's scum like the Irescum that drafted him 8th overall.

You idiots need to get a life! The new gm needs to come in and trade him for a 2nd rd pick while he still has value. We'll have 1st overall pick next year, we can draft another qb. Its going to be rebuild from the ground up starting next season anyway under the new gm.

Lets have a full blown offseason fire sale. Get rid of everything Irescum brought in, including Tannehill!

Craig M....

Good post @ 12:16....gives me some hope for the kid...

But why haven't the corrected...or adjusted for this already....

I hope the new gm comes in and rid us of any and everything that has Irescum stench on it!

YG, drafting a QB at #8 that lost 6 games as a college senior is unheard of.....for a reason.

ALOCO WILL BE OVERJOYED. THE GARAGE MECHANIC IS ON THE WAY OUT! LOL

MAYBE WE GET POLIAN TO COME IN AND FINISH GROOMING HIS SON WHILE HE OVERSEES OUR 2013 DRAFT AND THE FA PERIOD.

Trade the entire team for Matt Ryan. If Atlanta would even do that.

Even though that me above was not me, I tend to agree with him.(even the other mes are logical). Where is Joe Philbin's press conference?

Vontae was calling his grandma all day!!

THE TALENT IS SO HORRIBLE HERE WE ONLY LOOK GREAT IN PRACTICE PLAYING AGAINST EACHOTHER. THE COACHES HAVE SO MUCH AS ADMITTED IT.

Dashi says Ireland will be gone just like u by week 6.

Know ur role Jabroni!!

YOUNG PLAYERS ON GOOD TEAMS GET BETTER BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY HAVE GOOD PLAYERS TO LEARN FROM. T6HAT ISNT THE CASE ON THIS TALENT STARVED ROSTER IRESCUM BUILT.

ESPN JUST REPORTED IRELAND HAS BEEN FIRED AND RUMORS ARE ROSS IS TALKING TO BILL POLIAN ABOUT THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!

Cabroni!

Naanee is still playing because that is Irelands last Card for this year. If Naanee doesn't play what did Ireland Do FA wise?

Philbin's job is safe maybe even if they go 6-10. That Punks job is safe if we go 11-5 and make the Playoffs. Ross has said this Much!

If Ross goes the Bill Polian/ Carl Peterson route Philbin will be the Coach if he goes 6-10 or better.

but If Ross Decides on a Scott Pioli/ Young Exec type. Believe he will want to change the Staff.

Those Veteran Exec's have a better understanding of the Hand the Coach was Dealt than a Ireland type GM.

FIRE IRELAND!!

Of the draft picks this year, only Tannehill-Martin-Vernon, were even on the active list. Therest are inactives, practice squad, or plain cut.

Vernon was invisible yesterday, Tannehill got a D qb grade on his performance yesterday by espn, and if you graded Jonathan Martin it would be a D to C- at best. This means absolutely zero immediate impact players the entire draft, then Irescum follows that up with a poor free agency and dumping Marshall.

Irescum must go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is very little to be gained for the Team's benefit to be changing everything at the present moment. Just improve on It to Season's End. Then, inexorably, It will come.

Jeff Ireland is not going anywhere, time for you fools to go away, there is no cure for stupid, wake up, he is not going anywhere because of your crying, God I would hope to never go into combat with you fools, go back into your basement and suck on the nipple and go root for the jets. Bill

Thigpen...

Another ACORN.....thank GOD for Acorns....

at the time they announced the rookie as the starter
you should know what was coming, and strap up your emotions because it will happen again,

that said, tanny did a lot of good work with what he had, getting in the end zone is big for him, needs to get the monkey off his back.

it's going to be a very long season, period

we need 4/5 quality starters yet on this offense to truly compete, until that happens, try to stay calm

Irescum is fool proof that at times even "a blind squirrel" eventually finds an acorn.

I truly hope Martin turns out to be a stud b/c Stephen Hill & Alshon Jeffrey were still on the board in the 2nd round when we took him. I realize that we had MANY needs aside from WR going into this draft but Martin has to be a HR or Ireland & his minions absolutely blew it again.

Ross, are you sure you want to move the Team to LA?. We are even willing to make you an offer not to do so, and let you return to the Real State business. Think about it.

fancy pants,

I give you that we need 4 good starters on offense:

1. 2wr's
2. te
3. Hopefully rookie Josh Samuda can take over center and move Pouncey over to guard.

I watch NO TV to see my Team look like crap.

TANNY CAN'T CONSTANTLY DO A 2 STEP DROP AND PASS THRU THE D LINE, AFTER A WHILE THEY WILL SEE THIS AND QUIT THE RUSH AND STAND THERE WITH THIER HANDS UP AS WE SEEN SUNDAY, BAD COACHING BY THE DULLFINS. WELL WASHINGTON HAS A QB, THE DULLFINS MIGHT HAVE TO WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR. TANNY A FRANCHISE QB, I DON'T THINK SO, WASHINGTON OH YEA!!!

Even though they lost by 20, there was still a ray of hope from some positive things. Jimmy outlines what they are at

WHRB's,

I believe Martin will be a great RT. You're asking a rookie lineman to play a position he didnt play in college and then do it on a very high nfl level.

For one, we didnt have a good vet RT for him to learn from. Two, exactly why he'll struggle as he gets better.

"If Ross expects a winning record he's TOTALLY INSANE!!!!!!"

Oscar,

I know he said that publicly BUT I'm not sure he REALLY expects that. I hope (actually I pray) that he said that to put Ireland on notice that he HAS to win this year.

BTW--Still don't know why Ireland was kept & I just hope Ross realizes that this guy couldn't rebuild this team in 15 years.

About a month ago, I wrote on this blog that Martin will have problems with bull rushers because of his pathetic strength showing at the combine. He may have got stronger by now but he's still not NFL level yet. esterday he faced one of teh ebst bull rushers in teh NFL in JJ Watt and he blew Martin up - pretty much changed the game on his own. That coupled with Tannehill's inexperience just snatched the game away in the matter of a few minutes and too bad too because it was a good showing.

The Dolphins will have to find a way to solve this because Richard Seymour is coming to town this week and don't be surprised if he gets matched up against Martin in the nickel. Every team will be trying to plow through Martin until they figure it out.

I think the kid will be good but this year his lack of strength will show.

hillbilly,

The Redskins have far more talent on thier roster than the Dolphins. Ever think that may have a little to do with it?

YG
exactly what I believe
a couple of recievers, a beast at TE (the kind that always kills us)
on the line I hope that martin can handle the end, and if jerry cant get that next level push bye bye

The only true "ray of hope" is this is what leads to the firing of Irescum.

It is acceptable for me that I forgot that Jonathan Martin was playing against JJ Watts(and I did obviate it completely). Not for our Coaches, though.

part of those batted down balls goes on the OL

let me ask this, if you are on a defender that can get both hands up in the air, how much push is the O lineman giving ?

Armando,

Just stop it, defense is not the problem with the Dolphins. Yes improving the secondary would work. Misi is not very good on coverage. He is much better at making a tackle after the first down is picked up. The Texans scored on the offense. We need receivers that can create separation and for Tannihill to be coached better on not getting passes hit by the DL. The Texans knew about Tannehill's vulnerability on getting passes knocked down by defensive lineman. OH, BRANDON MARSHALL HAD 9 RECEPTIONS FOR 120 YARDS ON 15 ATTEMPTS FOR CHICAGO. MIAMI GAVE HIM UP WITHOUT A REPLACEMENT. THAT IS AN UNACCEPTABLE TRADE FOR A GM TO MAKE.

Unfortunately, this is not a FO issue. This is an organization issue. Getting rid of one individual will not a fix make...Ireland isn't making decisions in a vacuum. If you get rid of him, he'll just be another scapegoat on a long list of them for this team...Think back - when the defense was good, the offense sputtered. When the offense was good, there was not defense. Again I say the entire organization needs to change it's mentality. Getting rid of one guys so you can blame someone else next year and the year after won't fix the real problems.

Mark In Torontoless,

Stop patting yourself on the back. Martin's combine benching has nothing to do with it. Vet olinemen have learn that a nice counter to the bullrush is to use the guy's forward momentum against him. Let him come forward and use his momentun to push him downwards.

At this level it isnt all about strength, its about smarts too. Vet olinemen learn tricks of the trade to compensate. Martin will learn too.

Bull rushing is also about technique. Ive seen Jake Long run over on a bullrush by a d'lineman Imsure he's more powerful than. Its about teachnique, smarts, and strength last at this level. Hope you learned something smart guy.

This last loss, IMO, was 70% on the Coaching.
