'Favorable' schedule suddenly looking tougher

Remember last week when I told you this season's schedule reminded me of the 2008 schedule that allowed that Dolphins team to win the AFC East title? Remember that stuff about the Dolphins not facing a 2011 playoff qualifier until December, thus making this coming two months a time when the Dolphins could win some games?

Remember Davone Bess saying he'd looked at the schedule and thought the Dolphins could do damage with that schedule?

Yeah, that stuff's not holding up so well right now.

The Dolphins will leave for Arizona on Friday as part of their preparations for playing the Cardinals Sunday. That game was supposed to be against a struggling club that was still searching for a quarterback and an identity.

Nevermind. That's not looking to be the case at this point.

The Cardinals are 3-0. They have posted a 10-2 record in their last 12 regular-season games. They boast the NFL's No. 1 defense in points allowed -- which is the most important statistic when judging because, you know, the score is what determines the game's outcome.

The Cards still have premier receiver Larry Fitzgerald and now Kevin Kolb has started to stabilize their quarterback play.

Suddenly this game isn't looking like a victory for Miami, much less an easy victory.

And that seems to be the narrative in other parts of the schedule as well.

The Bengals were supposed to be beatable. I suppose they still are. But they're tied for the AFC North lead and are playing solid football. Andy Dalton is the NFL's fourth-rated quarterback.

The Seahawks were supposed to be beatable. I suppose they still are. But they have the look of a solid team as well. Their defense, particularly their secondary, is outstanding. The unit was second in the NFL in points allowed per game prior to last night's game against Green Bay. And offensively, Marshawn Lynch is indeed a beast.

Yes, the Colts, Titans and Rams have major problems. But all have quarterbacks playing better than Miami starter Ryan Tannehill.

Suddenly, a stretch of games that seemed promising a week ago, is casting a different shadow now.

Do we really want Matt Moore starting for this team? He would win us some more games, yes, we all know that....but we would be stuck at mediocrity this season and hurting our future chances. Everyone saying win now is putting what stock into the future other than another 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7 season. We need a QB in the worst way, one that will lead this team somewhere -- this season is to see if we have that QB in Tannehill, and with that we're going to lose some tough game like this one. Everyone screams "we want a QB" but no one thinks about the growing pains that come with it. The guy isn't going to be elite this year or next, but if becomes a top 10, maybe top 7-8 QB within 4 years than we have what is referred to as a franchise QB. Moore isn't a franchise QB, he's average.

And whoever said Wake hasn't sniffed a sack this season hasn't watched the games. He's close and causing trouble on almost every play. Better coverage down field leads to more sacks (just as more pressure leads to worse/quicker throws from the QB)

Sam, Tannehill has the WORST QB rating in the NFL. He's just awful. I guess you havent watched any games.

The Need Is WR and DB?

isn't 1 of those Defense. And By DB U DO MEAN SAfety and CB. Not Just 1 WR!!

It's funny that we need 3 Players in our Secondary and 1 on Offense. Not to Mention we Need 2 young LB's that Can Run and Cover!!! That's 5 Defensive Players Compared to 1 WR!!!!!!

It's Funny Right!!

And That's without Saying We Need 1 More Premier Edge Rusher(Top 5 Pick)!!

So that's 6 to ur 1!!!!!

It's funnyy!!! HA HA!! AS*Clown!!!

Plus We can Sign 1 Blue Chip Wr in FA or 2 Quality one's. U know out of Greg Jennings, D.Bowe, M.Wallace and Many others.

Instead of Trying to Draft a 1st Rd WR!!! Less than a 50/50 Chance U hit. And With Ireland doing the Gambiling Dashi doesn't like those Odd's.

Plus that leave's our 10+ Picks to fix the 6 Hole's on D and get the TOP TE in the Draft.

On a + note, we are containing the corners pretty darned good. NOBODY can run on us. Hint. Hint.

no pix six = jets loss...

Matt Barkley you are ours.

True, D20. So now we have identified 2 areas of need. Pass Rusher and a cover corner or playmaker S, probably both.

I have always been D inclined but not obviating Miami's woes on offense.

Ryan Tannehill has the LOWEST QB rating in the NFL. Thanks again Irescum.

I would love to have a cover corner or safety more than a pass rusher. I'd rather a WR more than either of those positions, but defensively I'd rather spend/draft 1st round (if in top 10):

Best player available for WR, CB, S, and even a DE if he's a stud.

It all depends on who we get in FA. I don't know who's available but if we can get a DE thru FA I'd rather go that route. We need to develope and obtain a young, stud WR to pair up with Tannehill for their young careers. Give me an AJ Green or Julio Jones and I'd be thrilled regardless of what we do at CB. If CB is BPA than get him and get back in the first round and get the 2nd best WR. From what I hear this isn't a good WR draft. If we draft 8 and miss out on best WR but best CB is staring us in the face Ireland or whoever is drafting better grab em and not screw it up

btw, where are some Players from Miami, the great Naanee, Charles Clay, even Egnew, who just by running a deep route, would have taken pressure of our passing Game?

"Yes, the Colts, Titans and Rams have major problems. But all have quarterbacks playing better than Miami starter Ryan Tannehill."

and so is every other QB in football

Don't be so down on Tannehill he's within striking distance of # 31 oh and Jay Cutler, how's Brandon Marshall working for you?

Tannhill hasn't looked too good and he certainly hasn't impressed, but he's shown improvement and shown he has what it takes to be a top QB between leadership skills and intangibles. Work on some accuracy and the speed/timing of the game and he'll be fine. He's shown he can take a hit too. Let's see where he takes us....would also like to see more WCO routes such as ones that go deep or intermediate. He has the arm for it, I guess we don't have the WRs for it

Moves that have gone in Ireland's favor:

Trading: Marshall, Davis
Trading for: Bush
Resigning: Soliai, Wake
Not trading for/signing: Orton, Flynn, Palmer, Ahmad Bradshaw, DeAngelo Williams

There are more that go into that last category I just can't think off the top of my head

where's cheap ross?
lol

Oh How I long for a big shclong in a thong.

What say you gents?

Dear lord we are doomed. This is the future!!

Don't Expect the fins to draft a Pass rusher unless it's at the Top of the Draft. No need to get one below the 1st round.

We Can Stop the Run on 1st and 2nd Down Because We basically have 3 DT's in the Game. STarks and Odrick can set the Edge with the best of them. And Misi is playing Sideline to Sideline. He's basically another DE on The Field(6'4" 260). He's Bigger than Cameron Wake. Plus he can't Cover the Pass that well.

OUR PROBLEM IS ON 3RD DOWN AND THE LB'S FALL BACK INTO COVERAGE. THEY LET OVER 70% of the PASSES thrown their way Completed. As A Team we only let 52% of the passes completed on us during all Downs. Picture how much lower that Number would be if The LB's Could break up more passes(Say 55% Completion) the Team as a Whole would be in the low 40's. We are already in the Top 10 with 52%. We would be in the Top 5 with that Pct. And that Usually means one of the Best Pass D in the NFL.

But If U can't complete the Pass U won't get any Yards. No 70 yard Slants. Or 50 yd Passes from the Flat. CAN SOMEONE COVER THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD. U KNOW THAT AREA from 5yds to 15yds from the Line Of Scrimage. THE ONE ALL GREAT LB'S RULE!!!!

WHAT RAY LEWIS OWNS!! PATRICK WILLS!!

WE HAVE 2 OF THE MOST OVERPAID PLAYERS IN THE NFL AT LB!!! Yes Burnett is overpaid at 4.5. Because MISI is Twice the Player and gets paid less than 1 Mil a Year.

U GUYS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CAP!!! MORE THAN 16MIL IS TIED UP ON 2 LB'S!!!

IF WE DRAFT 2 ROOKIE LB'S. Even if it's our 1st Rd and our 2nd-2. The Cap for those 3 players will be 3 Mil at the Best!!

That's a $13 Mill Dollar Difference!!!!!

Trade/CUT Dansby and burnett Next Year.

We can Ust that $13 mil to the $20 Mil Of Real Cap Money we will have next Year. Dashi sees us resigning our FA's. Long, Starks, Bush. Maybe S.Smith it is hard to find a 6'4" CB.

I agree Armando....

what looked like a cake walk...now looks like a tight rope-balancing act....

but like Sam @ 10:17 says....if we had held on to beat the jets...this would be a different out look....and I choose to keep the positive mindset....

i MEAN...ITS THE EFFING CARDINALS MAN....

A historically bad franchise......Dansby should have a GREAT game...and be HIGHLY motivated.....so what if FITZGERALD get 200 yards recieving...its all about winning the game....Holmes beat us for 150 of the most worthless yards I have ever seen....

We can beat this team....

That cheap SOB Ross doesnt want to pay the real refs fairly.

People this is not a playoff caliber team. They could get some bounces and win 8-9 games, but I se this year for what it is, and frankly I am happy so far. Houston is the team you want to become, they throttled us and will throttle many other teams. We are much better coached even though skill level has declined. Philbin gets 3 years from me thats it.

I seriously doubt our new GM will keep Philbin.

Does everyone else think that something feels refreshingly different about this team, compared to the teams of the past decade? Check out what Jimmy Bourbon thinks at phinsnews.com
http://phinsnews.com/something-feels-different/

People Ireland is not going anywhere this year.

I seriously doubt our new GM will keep Philbin.
Posted by: TGH | September 25, 2012 at 11:06 AM

I wholeheartedly disagree

Philbin is making the same mistake Sparano did in not starting Moore from game 1.

"Remember last week when I told you this season's schedule reminded me of the 2008 schedule that allowed that Dolphins team to win the AFC East title? Mando,

You're continuing to miss the point of this season which is to BEGIN the rebuilding process. The type of players we need @ WR & CB need to be high picks with elite talent like an AJ Green or a Patrick Peterson not lower picks like Vontae Davis or Jared Odrick.

Although I LOVED to see us win games & make the playoffs in 2008--that season was built on Pennington & the Wildcat. Therefore it was unsustainable & the team turned out to be a 'house of cards.' The very best thing for the future of this franchise is not WINS this season.

Even with all our deficiencies(the Jets have the better overall Personnel, imo) we managed to make a close Game out of it. How? I don't know.

MiamiD20
That's it that's what JI. Has done! That's why 90% of the DOLFAN want him out of here, no play makers on this team in the last two years. Average players at best! I don't understand the love affair with JI he is part of the problem, a Parcells disciple. Slow average players. NO PLAY MAKERS!
BYE BYE. JEFFERY. CANT WAIT!

I would love to have a cover corner or safety more than a pass rusher. I'd rather a WR more than either of those positions, but defensively I'd rather spend/draft 1st round (if in top 10):

MiamiD20,

I'm with you. I do find it hard to fathom that after another losing season--which this is destined to be--that Ireland can remain the GM. It would be Matt Millen-esque/pathetic if a GM still had a job after four straight losing seasons.

If it's any consolation Tannehill is not the worst QB in the NFL: Blaine Gabbert is.
Two weeks ago he threw for a total of 58 yards in the game.
This past Sunday he had a grand total of 75 yards through 59 minutes and then dumped one off and the WR turned it into an 80 yd TD so J'ville won the game and the stat line was acceptable but on the weak side.
The regime in J'ville is afraid to admit that the king has no clothes.

Ray,

The Ireland supporters are looking at this draft which MIGHT (obviously WAY to early to tell) be a very good one. However, I don't see how it's possible to look at the 2011 draft & say that was success. Yes Pouncey is a freaking stud but you need to hit on THREE players each draft for it to be considered a success & I just don't see that happening.

Limit the turnovers on offense and we will be in all of the games. Offensive line is getting the job done. Running game looks strong. I like Lamar Miller's contribution off of the bench. Defensive front seven is stout. Concerned about the pass rush and defensive backs. Still got time to improve. Fins Up!!!!!

T-Hill is not the problem, he is the future and we are only gonna win 6-7 games why not keep running him out there. What does Moore buy us 7-8 wins? Play calling in the 4th quarter lost the game. Not using Miller instead of Thomas cost us the game.
I guess it's frustrating cause you expected to be 0-3 or even 1-2 like we are, but you didn't expect to be this way how we got here. Up by 7 with 10 minutes left, already running for over 160 yards and deciding to throw 3 quick passes chewing up a whopping 24 seconds. The 4 minute meltdown in Houston. We have shown more potential than I have expected and got suckered in. They are who they were always gonna be this season.

@11:13 WHRB Great Point.

Yes, The Fan in us wants to go to the Playoff's. Even if it's with smoke and Mirrors.

We have a TOP 5 Rush Attack Right Now. And a Rookie QB with No Wr's.

As long as we are close in almost every game. Dashi will be happier with 4-12 at the end of the Year than 9-7. IT Will Payoff when the Draft Comes around most of our pick are at the top of Each Round.

We Want Ireland to Use Every Pick. Specially THE FAN HERE WHO THINKS MOVING UP IN THE DRAFT COUNTS THE SAME AS PICKING A PLAYER IN A LOWER ROUND.

ONE THING We haven't talked here is IF IRELAND or Whoever is Drafting Can trade up back into the 1st with a 2nd and a 3rd. That would let us draft 2 players in the 1st round and Still Draft a Player in the Other Rounds.

Yes, the Colts, Titans and Rams have major problems. But all have quarterbacks playing better than Miami starter Ryan Tannehill.

Mando,

So??? The Saints have Drew Brees who broke Marino's single season passing record last year & they're 0-3!!!

ONE THING We haven't talked here is IF IRELAND or Whoever is Drafting Can trade up back into the 1st with a 2nd and a 3rd. That would let us draft 2 players in the 1st round and Still Draft a Player in the Other Rounds.

Dashi,

I said that with yesterday. With the extra 2nd round pick from the Colts (which should be a high one) & the extra 3rd round pick from the Bears from marshall we will have the ammunition to take TWO first rounders if the right player is there.

BTW--Looking at the 2011 draft I'd rather have someone not named Ireland making that decision for us.

Jcurrier,

You don't bench Tannehill. I have heard Peyton Manning say MANY times that the learning experience of his rookie season where he went 3-13 was invaluable to his development.

BTW--Some fans have short memories b/c Tannehill's played better in the pre-season than Moore did. Unless Tannehill gets dinged up playing Moore is a TERRIBLE decision,

WHRBs...

can you elaborate on your coment @ 11:28.....

I don't quite see the connection.....

Dashi longwind douchey,

Sushi say your posts too long and gay

Sushi ask please keep post short or goway

Sushi pray for goodness sake.

SUSHI OUT!

WHRBs...

is 100% correct...no point in going backwards now...why play Moore...what possible good can come from that decision....we ride or die with Tanne until his replacement is drafted...or he turns into a pro-bowl or play off QB...

WHRB's

Not to mention, Moore never even looked like he grasped the west coast concept, the game is just too fast for him

BTW....

This Wilson kid looks phenominal.....

He looks to be the definition of INTANGIBLES....he inspires me...and i'm just looking @ him on TV....we got to look out for this kid when we see them....

Wilson is ALMOST enough to make me give up my man-crush on Mallett...ALMOST...

Anybody else feel like we took the wrong QB.....

Tanny has not looked great & considering his supporting cast, I'm not surprised. I also don't think he has looked terrible.

I would think coaches would lean on a heavy play action game. Less shotgun snaps, more tight formations & alot of play action calls.

While the team is running as well as it is, you have to use it. Setting up in the shotgun kind of removes the treat of the run. Not completely but, enough.

Until he has at least 1 LEGIT WR & a decent option at TE, we cannot pass judgement on him.

Let's hope whoever the GM is, is able to bring him some weapons. Hopefully this year will be about learning the ins & outs of being a pro. The speed of the game. Better at reading a D etc.

That should help him be much better year #2 where we can get a real feel for what he is or can be.

Anyone see Russell Wilson in last nights game?
Guy is a gamer and knows how to throw a deep route down the middle of the field.

Why is Tannehill only throwing sideline passes or check-downs to the RB's?

Something tells me the coaches are seeing that T-hill has problems throwing down the middle...be it tipped balls at the line or accuracy issues leading his receivers.

Hopefully it can be coached/fixed, or maybe its a trait that is embedded in his abilities and not correctable?

Eitherway, Tannehill has accuracy issues throwing the ball downfield that must be addressed.

On the Thomas and Miller Debate.

Dashi Thinks the Coaching Staff Feels Lets see what we have with Thomas before making our Decision on Him. He is the 2nd round pick. And the Guy who has been in the League a year longer.

What did Philbin say after the Game U can't win fumbling the Ball. Thomas has 1 More Fumble he will see Extended time at the Bench.

This is an Evaluation Season!

When Bush got hurt, why bring him back in the 3rd game of the Season? U guys would've had a Field Day if did get hurt when they put him Back.

We Have RB's. Let the Other 2 play and they were doing fine. Now could we have ran it 50 times instead of 40 Yes. But Sherman wanted to give T-hill and the WR's a Chance to win it(Build Confidence or Fail). If it doesn't work at least T-Hill got 30 passes up on Rex Ryan and only really had 1 Mistake. Not bad for a Rookie.

Again it's early in the Season. U keep Miller Hungry by letting him think Thomas is Better. The Coach is Basically telling Him Get The Book Down and U are 2nd in Command. Hint: Develop fast Enough and we might not need to resign reggie.

If Reggie Can't Play Miller had to see the Field last Game. Next game trust it will be 50/50 with Thomas for the #2. OR Philbin take it Easy with the Soon to Be FA and Sit Bush so U don't hurt his FA Stock by getting hurt.

Having Thomas Starting for 1 game, but giving Miller Most of the Carries.

Don't get me wrong If Bush is Healthy let him Play. We need all the Help we can get.

But we need to know what we have in Thomas And Miller. Who's Ricky? Who's Ronnie?

Miller=Ricky
Thomas=Ronnie

Again, Bush won't be 30 like Dashi said at the Start of Next Season jsut 28. Maybe 2 more Years at the top of his game.

Miller is only 21 yrs old. 22 before next season.

Fan Base Wise? Who would U rather Start Next Year?

The 22 yr Old From UM or the 29Yr old FA.

Bush is in his Prime. Miller is Learning and has a great Mentor in Bush.

Now If the Fins can Come to an Agreement with Bush for 2-3 Years that's fine with me. We can get rid of thomas next year for Picks. And if he can get close to a 1000 yds he will be nice trade bait.

Specially to move back in the 1st. a 2nd a 3rd and Thomas for a 1st rounder. That would really put pressure on the Kid. U will have some Clown here saying we traded 6 pick for WR!!

U know who u are!

Fin 77,

I'm waiting for YOU to retire....counting the days actually.

For the guys that want Bowe or some other FA this offseason, take a look at the contract that Vincent Jackson got. That's what it's going to take to sign him. Is he worth that? Not even close! Ireland will draft a WR, either in the first round or with one of the second round picks. And to the guys who don't think you can get a good receiver early second round, take a look around the league. There are lots of good receivers that are picked in the second round or later. Greg Jennings is one that come to mind and I think Colston was a 7th rounder. Pretty a ton more examples, just don't have the time to look them all up.

another click for you mando and another waste of my time

NH...

Just said the same thing @ 11;54...GREAT MINDS man...GREAT Minds....

Craig, Dashi will take a WR in the 1st or 2nd. Just MAKE SURE HE IS THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE. Dashi doesn't want to see us pick Need over Talent.

Dashi knows This about Ireland. He usually drafts best player available. When he doesn't we Look Horrible. When he picks a player in the Round because of Need over Talent. Merling, Vontae, Gates, Egnew, MAny others. He sucks at drafting for Need.
